INSPIRE - CARBIOSOL - Uncertainties of Total Organic Carbon Contents - period 1949-1972 in Wallonia (BE)

This INSPIRE data layer takes up the uncertainties of the total organic carbon content in the soils under permanent crops and grasslands of the Walloon territory in the period 1949-1972. This INSPIRE compliant data comes from the source data CARBIOSOL - Uncertainties of Total Organic Carbon Contents - period 1949-1972. It includes modeling uncertainties (here coefficient of variation - CV) for predicted TOC contents in soils under crops and meadows in Walloon territory for the period 1949-1972. It is therefore a modeling of the prediction error. As part of the CARBIOSOL project (UCL - ULg - DGARNE), a 90-metre raster data layer of resolution of total organic carbon contents of soils under crops and grasslands was generated by spatial modelling. This model was developed for each type of land use of interest (crops and permanent grasslands). For each land use, a Generalised Additive Model (GAM) has been adjusted to a calibration set containing two thirds of the observation points concerned. It was then validated on the remaining third. For more details on the modeling implemented under CARBIOSOL, please refer to the metadata sheet documenting the data layer series. The mapping of modeling uncertainties associated with predicted TOC levels for the period 1949-1974 is a spatially continuous raster layer on soils under crops and grasslands with a resolution of 90 metres. The uncertainty in each pixel is expressed as a relative percentage. Prediction error modeling is a potential error that allows a better interpretation of the final cartographic products generated by the CARBIOSOL project. The mapping of total organic carbon contents for the period 1949-1972 should therefore be read in conjunction with the uncertainty map. Significant uncertainty reflects a less reliable prediction and therefore greater caution in the interpretation of values.
