HOTSED was applied to assess the spatio-temporal variability of sediment source hotspots driven by rainfall-induced surface runoff across different climatic conditions and rainfall intensities. We analyzed four seasonal scenarios and four daily scenarios, including an ordinary event and three extreme events with different return periods (10-year, 30-year, and 50-year). A pre-existing polygon-based geomorphological map was used to spatially define sediment sources across the study area. The geomorphic Potential of each Sediment Source (PSS) was estimated through a qualitative scoring of map attributes, supported by semi-quantitative, spatially distributed indices, including slope, permafrost distribution, and a proxy for frost-cracking incidence on the bedrock. Structural Sediment Connectivity (STC) was estimated using a geomorphometric index based on a Digital Terrain Model. For each scenario, a proxy for the Potential for Sediment Transport (PST) was computed using a rainfall-calibrated index, applying a 0°C ground surface temperature threshold to exclude snow-covered areas. All components were then integrated through a raster-based equation, yielding the HOTSED model. In this dataset, for each analysed scenario, we provide the main raster input data used (i.e., PSS, STC, PST, and the snowfall coefficient δ), as well as the final model outputs.
The dataset contains 16 folders: 8 scenarios (i.e., 4 seasonal scenarios + 4 short-term daily scenarios) with 2 different configurations (i.e., catchment outlet and main channels). Each folder contains 5 raster files in GEOTIFF format. A brief description of each raster file is provided in the Supplemental Information of this datasets metadata.
In dieser Studie präsentierten wir die erste Anpassung und Implementierung des HOTSED-Frameworks in einem hochalpinen Einzugsgebiet der östlichen italienischen Alpen, das als Pilotgebiet ausgewählt wurde. HOTSED wurde angewandt, um die räumlich-zeitliche Variabilität von Hotspots der Sedimentquellen zu bewerten, die durch niederschlagsinduzierten Oberflächenabfluss unter unterschiedlichen klimatischen Bedingungen und Niederschlagsintensitäten gesteuert wird. Wir analysierten vier saisonale Szenarien und vier Tagesszenarien, darunter ein gewöhnliches Ereignis sowie drei Extremereignisse mit unterschiedlichen Wiederkehrintervallen (10-, 30- und 50-jährig). Eine bereits bestehende, polygonbasierte geomorphologische Karte wurde verwendet, um die Sedimentquellen im Untersuchungsgebiet räumlich zu definieren. Das geomorphologische Potenzial jeder Sedimentquelle (PSS) wurde durch eine qualitative Bewertung der Kartenattribute abgeschätzt, unterstützt durch semi-quantitative, räumlich verteilte Indizes, darunter Hangneigung, Permafrostverbreitung und ein Proxy für die Häufigkeit von Frostsprengung im Festgestein. Die strukturelle Sedimentkonnektivität (STC) wurde mithilfe eines geomorphometrischen Index auf Basis eines digitalen Geländemodells (DGM) geschätzt. Für jedes Szenario wurde ein Proxy für das Potenzial des Sedimenttransports (PST) anhand eines niederschlagskalibrierten Index berechnet, wobei ein Schwellenwert von 0 °C der bodennahen Oberflächentemperatur angewandt wurde, um schneebedeckte Flächen auszuschließen. Anschließend wurden alle Komponenten über eine rasterbasierte Gleichung integriert, woraus das HOTSED-Modell resultierte. In diesem Datensatz stellen wir für jedes analysierte Szenario die verwendeten zentralen Raster-Eingangsdaten (d. h. PSS, STC, PST sowie den Schneefallkoeffizienten δ) sowie die finalen Modellausgaben bereit.
Der Datensatz umfasst 16 Ordner: 8 Szenarien (d. h. 4 saisonale Szenarien + 4 kurzfristige tägliche Szenarien) mit 2 unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen (d. h. Catchment outlet und Main channels). Jeder Ordner enthält 5 Rasterdateien im GeoTIFF-Format. Eine kurze Beschreibung der einzelnen Rasterdateien ist unter Supplemental Information der Metadaten dieses Datensatzes.
