Grassland contributes to food security by providing fodder for dairy and beef farming, storing nutrients and increasing biodiversity. These functions that secure the fertility and yields of soil are jeopardized by climate change, especially in monane and alpine areas. In SUSALPS, scientists, authorities and farmers work together to investigate the influence of climate change on i) plant biodiversity, ii) C and N storage, iii) greenhouse gas exchange, iv) socio economic conditions that influence decision making of farmers. A central experimental aspect is the translocation of soil mesocosms from higher elevation to lower elevation (Esterberg site at 1200m, Graswang site at 860m, Fendt at 600m, Bayreuth at 300m). To reflect the spatial heterogeneity of soils, mesocosms from three different subplots approx. 100-300m apart from each other are translocated. Since temperatures are higher and precipitation is lower in lower elevation, the translocated mesocosms experience climate change. This dataset contains daily average soil temperature and volumetric soil water content in 5 and 15 cm depth. Sie tragen zur Nahrungssicherung bei, indem Sie Futter für die (Milch-) Viehhaltung bereitstellen, speichern Nährstoffe und fördern die Biodiversität. Diese Funktionen, die die Leistungs- und Ertragsfähigkeit der Ressource Boden langfristig sichern, sind durch den Klimawandel bedroht. Dies betrifft insbesondere Böden im Bereich der Alpen und Voralpen, da sich in diesen Regionen der Klimawandel stärker als im globalen Mittel auswirkt. Im SUSALPS-Verbund arbeiten Wissenschaftler, Behörden und Landwirte zusammen, um den Einfluss des Klimawandels und der Bewirtschaftung auf i) Pflanzenbiodiversität, Produktivität und Futterwert von Grünlandböden, ii) die Rolle von Grünlandböden für die Speicherung von Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff, iii) den Treibhausgasaustausch und die Nährstoffrückhaltung durch Pflanzen und mikrobiologische Prozesse im Boden und iv) die sozioökonomischen Randbedingungen, die das Entscheidungsverhalten von Landwirten beeinflussen, zu erforschen. Ein zentraler experimenteller Ansatz von SUSALPS ist es, Mesokosmen aus Grünland höherer Lagen in niedrigere Lagen zu versetzen (Fläche Esterberg auf 1200m, Graswang auf 860m, Fendt auf 600m, Bayreuth auf 300m). Um die räumliche Heterogenität abzubilden wurden von jedem Ursprungsgrünland Mesokosmen von drei ca. 100-300m voneinander entfernten Subplots entnommen. Da in niedrigeren Lagen höhere Temperaturen und geringere Niederschläge anzutreffen sind, entsprechen diese Versetzungsexperimente einer Klimaänderung aus Sicht der Mesokosmen. Der vorliegende Datensatz enthält tägliche Mittelwerte der Bodentemperatur und volumetrischen Bodenfeuchte in 5 und 15cm Tiefe der Behandlung Graswang Subplot 1 in Fendt intensiv. For soil temperature, a moving average was calculated and residuals were calculated by substracting the moving average from the time series. Residuals greater than 8 deg. centigrade were set to NA For soil moisture, a moving average was calculated and residuals were calculated by substracting the moving average from the time series. Residuals greater than 20% were set to NA Since soil moisture has been determined using a TDR method, frozen soil water prohibits sound measurements. For this reason, soil moistures were set to NA when soil temperature was below 0.3 deg. centigrade. Data analysis showed that from this threshold on, soil moisture values were not reliable. Finally all data was visually inspected and periods during which unreliable data were observed was set to NA. This affected predominately periods during winter when soils partially thawed.trueSoil moisture (volumetric water content) and temperature was determined by means of Decagon Devices 5TM sensors. Values were logged using the logger unit EM50 every 30 minutes. Loggers were read in approx. half year intervals and transfered to the KIT network drive for projects 'G:\\Projekte\\SUSALPS\\Daten & Experimente\\Klimadaten\\Decagon_Loggers\\Excel_raw\\'. In an automated step, temperatures above 55°C and below -30 °C are exluded, and soil moistures values are declared unavailable if soil temperatures are below 0. In addition soil water values that differ more than 5% from the preceding 30 minutes interval are declared not available as well. Subsequently, the data is plotted to identify further errors on visual inspection. Quality checked data is used to calculated daily averages. Visual inspection and calculation of averages is implemented in R. Daily averages are reported here
