The experimental site was founded in 1936 by Prof. Kurt Opitz is located about 30 kilometres south of Berlin. This site represents typical farming conditions of the young moraine landscapes of the Weichselian glaciation of Northeast Germany. According to the German classification of soil-climate spaces, the experimental site is located in the area of “dry-warm diluvial soils of East German lowlands” (diluvial: soils developed in glacial sediments). Within this area, soil values of the “German soil taxation framework” of less than 30 out of a maximum 100 are common.
Thyrow is located at approximately 42 m above sea level on the southern edge of the Teltow, a Weichselian ground moraine plateau. The slope is predominantly flat at 2 %. The dominant soil type for this is location is a Retisol developed in a sand over a deep loam. As typical for ground moraines the boundaries between the sandy and loamy layer vary intensely between 60 cm to 200 cm. This causes small-scale differences in water and nutrient resources especially of the subsoil. The plant available water capacity of the soil in the effective root zone (60 – 80 cm deep) fluctuates between 50 to 150 mm. These soils are at high risk of nutrient leaching, acidification and surface siltation because of the low clay and humus content of the topsoil.
Due to the soil’s low water-holding capacity, the crop yields at the Thyrow Field Station show great fluctuations dependent on weather conditions. The climatic water balance during the growing period is negative and the overall low water availability at this location limits the crop yields. Mean annual temperature for the period 1991-2020 was measured to be 9.7°C, with annual precipitation 533 mm. Annual crop yields are particularly negatively affected by low precipitation from April to June.
The two areas that are managed by the research station are separated by the Thyrower Dorfstraße (Landesstraße 795). The main experimental area, where the long-term experiments are conducted, is located on the farm (Hof) side, along with two other trials for the implementation of field experiments. Northwest of the Landesstraße there is another experimental area (Schlag 3), where other experiments are conducted to answer questions about differing agricultural systems, soil management, cultivar suitability, and fertilization.

Dataset version 1.0Der Standort Thyrow der Lehr- und Forschungsstation Pflanzenbauwissenschaften ist eine Serviceeinrichtung des Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Instituts für Agrar- und Gartenbauwissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Gegründet im Jahr 1936 von Prof. Kurt Optiz liegt dieser Versuchsstandort ca. 30 Kilometers südlich von Berlin. Der Standort stellt typische landwirtschaftliche Bedingungen der Jungmoränenlandschaften dar und ist im Boden-Klima-Raum der trocken-warmen diluvialen Böden des Ostdeutschen Tieflands verortet. In diesem Raum kommen Bodenzahlen von weniger als 30 häufig vor.
Thyrow liegt am südlichen Rand des Teltows, einer weichselzeitlichen Grundmoränenplatte. Das Gelände ist mit einer Hangneigung 2 % überwiegend flach und liegt ca. 42 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Die Bodenform Fahlerde-Braunerde aus Sand über tiefem Lehm herrscht an diesem Standort vor. Typisch für Grundmoränen schwankt die Grenze zwischen Sand und Lehm sehr stark (60 cm bis 200 cm). Dies führt zu kleinräumigen Unterschieden im Wasser- und Nährstoffhaushalt im Unterboden. Die nutzbare Feldkapazität im effektiven Wurzelraum (60 – 80 cm Tiefe) kann zwischen 50 und 150 mm variieren. Aufgrund niedrige Ton- und Humusgehalte im Oberboden sind diese Böden stark durch Nährstoffauswaschung, Versauerung und Verschlämmung gefährdet.
Wegen des geringen Wasserspeichervermögens des Bodens ist die Ertragsvariabilität am Standort Thyrow stark witterungsabhängig. In der Vegetationszeit ist die klimatische Wasserbilanz negativ und der Ertrag wird durch die geringe Wasserverfügbarkeit begrenzt. Die mittlere Jahrestemperatur für den Zeitraum 1991-2020 liegt bei 9,7 °C, die mittlere Niederschlagsmenge im gleichen Zeitraum bei 533 mm. Die Erträge werden insbesondere durch geringe Niederschläge in den Monaten April bis Juni negativ beeinflusst.
Am Standort Thyrow werden zwei Flächen bewirtschaftet, die durch die Thyrower Dorfstraße (Landesstraße L795) getrennt sind. An das Hofgrundstück schließt die Hauptversuchsfläche an, auf dieser sind die Thyrower Dauerfeldversuche angelegt worden und es stehen zwei weitere Schläge für die Durchführung von Feldversuchen zur Verfügung. Nordwestlich der Landesstraße befindet sich eine weitere Versuchsfläche (Schlag 3), auf der Langzeitversuche und Projektversuche zu Fragen differenzierter Agrarsysteme, Bodenbearbeitung, Sorteneignung und Düngung durchgeführt werden.
