We present and discuss a new dataset of gridded emissions covering the historical period (1850￢ﾀﾓ2000) in decadal increments at a horizontal resolution of 0.5ￂﾰ in latitude and longitude. The primary purpose of this inventory is to provide consistent gridded emissions of reactive gases and aerosols for use in chemistry model simulations needed by climate models for the Climate Model Intercomparison Program #5 (CMIP5) in support of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Our best estimate for the year 2000 inventory represents a combination of existing regional and global inventories to capture the best information available at this point; 40 regions and 12 sectors are used to combine the various sources. The historical reconstruction of each emitted compound, for each region and sector, is then forced to agree with our 2000 estimate, ensuring continuity between past and 2000 emissions. Simulations from two chemistry-climate models is used to test the ability of the emission dataset described here to capture long-term changes in atmospheric ozone, carbon monoxide and aerosol distributions. The simulated long-term change in the Northern mid-latitudes surface and mid-troposphere ozone is not quite as rapid as observed. However, stations outside this latitude band show much better agreement in both present-day and long-term trend. The model simulations indicate that the concentration of carbon monoxide is underestimated at the Mace Head station; however, the long-term trend over the limited observational period seems to be reasonably well captured. The simulated sulfate and black carbon deposition over Greenland is in very good agreement with the ice-core observations spanning the simulation period. Finally, aerosol optical depth and additional aerosol diagnostics are shown to be in good agreement with previously published estimates and observations.

info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/550", "550", "IPCC", "[SDE.MCG]Environmental Sciences/Global Changes", "Physics", "QC1-999", "emissions", "551", "01 natural sciences", "7. Loss of soil organic carbon (SOC) from agricultural soils is a key indicator of soil degradation associated with reductions in net primary productivity in crop production systems worldwide. Simple technical and locally appropriate solutions are required for farmers to increase SOC and to improve cropland management. In the last 30 years, straw incorporation has gradually been implemented across China in the context of agricultural intensification and rural livelihood improvement. A meta-analysis of data published before the end of 2016 was undertaken to investigate the effects of straw incorporation on crop production and SOC sequestration. The results of 68 experimental studies throughout China in different edaphic, climate regions and under different farming regimes were analyzed. Compared with straw removal, straw incorporation significantly sequestered SOC (0￢ﾀﾓ20￢ﾀﾉcm depth) at the rate of 0.35 (range 0.31￢ﾀﾓ0.40)￢ﾀﾉMg C￢ﾀﾉha￢ﾈﾒ1￢ﾀﾉyr￢ﾈﾒ1, increased crop grain yield by 13.4￢ﾀﾉ% (range 9.3￢ﾀﾉ%￢ﾀﾓ18.4￢ﾀﾉ%) and had a conversion efficiency of the applied straw-C as 16￢ﾀﾉ%￢ﾀﾉￂﾱ￢ﾀﾉ2￢ﾀﾉ% across the whole of China. The combined straw incorporation at the rate of 3￢ﾀﾉMg C￢ﾀﾉha￢ﾈﾒ1￢ﾀﾉyr￢ﾈﾒ1 with mineral fertilizer of 200￢ﾀﾓ400￢ﾀﾉkg N￢ﾀﾉha￢ﾈﾒ1￢ﾀﾉyr￢ﾈﾒ1 was demonstrated to be the best combination for farmers to use with crop yield increased by 32.7￢ﾀﾉ% (range 17.9￢ﾀﾉ%￢ﾀﾓ56.4￢ﾀﾉ%) and SOC sequestrated by the rate of 0.85 (range 0.54￢ﾀﾓ1.15)￢ﾀﾉMg C￢ﾀﾉha￢ﾈﾒ1￢ﾀﾉyr￢ﾈﾒ1. Straw incorporation achieved higher SOC sequestration rate and crop yield increment when applied to clay soils, under high cropping intensities, and in areas like Northeast China where the soil is being degraded. SOC responses were the greatest in the initial starting phase of straw incorporation and then declined and finally were negligible after 28￢ﾀﾓ62 years, however, crop yield responses were initially low and then increased reaching their highest level at 11￢ﾀﾓ15 years after straw incorporation. Overall, our study confirmed that straw incorporation did create a positive feedback loop of SOC enhancement together with increased crop production, and this is of great practical significance to straw management as agricultural intensifies in China and other regions in the world with different climate conditions.

2. It comprises 225 rows (individual plants) and 51 columns (variables), integrating ecological, morphological, physiological, and environmental information. Each row represents a unique individual annotated with population and genetic cluster identifiers, spatial coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude), and an array of functional and structural traits. Functional traits include critical photo-inactivation water content (a drought tolerance proxy), specific leaf area (SLA), and root-to-shoot biomass ratio, all of which are central to plant water-use strategies and growth efficiency. Morphometric traits—such as stem diameter, plant height, number of stems, canopy width (maximum and minimum), and canopy exposure—describe above-ground architectural variation. Physiological attributes include anthocyanin and phenolic concentrations, antioxidant capacity estimated via ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays, and germination percentage. These measures provide insight into chemical defense mechanisms and reproductive performance. Environmental predictors were extracted using point-based values corresponding to the coordinates of each sampled population, sourced from globally recognized high-resolution datasets due to their relevance to plant eco-physiology. The Aridity Index (AI), a key proxy for water availability, was calculated as the ratio of annual precipitation to potential evapotranspiration (AI = PPT / PET), following Fisher et al. (2011). Climatic variables include mean annual precipitation (PPT) and a suite of bioclimatic variables (BIO1–BIO19) from the CHELSA dataset, which provides fine-resolution climatologies suitable for ecological modeling (Karger et al., 2017). Potential evapotranspiration (PET), a metric for atmospheric water demand, was also derived from the methods of Fisher et al. (2011). In addition, UV-B radiation values were extracted from the glUV dataset, which offers spatially explicit estimates of biologically effective ultraviolet exposure (Beckmann et al., 2014). Soil (edaphic) variables were obtained from the SoilGrids 2.0 global database (Poggio et al., 2021), including soil texture fractions (sand, silt, clay), water retention capacity, and a set of nutrient and structural properties such as nitrogen content, soil organic carbon (SOC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and the proportion of coarse fragments. These variables support fine-scale trait–environment analyses and help evaluate potential adaptive responses across heterogeneous climatic and soil gradients. The dataset is well-suited for integrative ecological and evolutionary research, enabling analyses of the interaction between genomic variation, phenotypic traits, and abiotic selective pressures. The accompanying maqui.vcf file contains genomic variant data in VCF v4.2 format, generated using BBMap v38.69. It includes 2,356 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected across 188 diploid individuals of A. chilensis, aligned to the Aristotelia chilensis v1.0 reference genome. Variant calling was based on 415,851,949 reads, with an average read length of 138.41 bp, an average total base quality of 39.99, and a mean mapping quality (MAPQ) of 41.03. SNPs are distributed across at least 37 reference contigs, ranging from approximately 63,940 to 113,184 base pairs in length. Genotypes are encoded in standard VCF format and include quality metrics per sample. This dataset enables population genomics analyses, including assessments of genetic structure, differentiation, and genotype–environment associations. The presence of WVMV was ascertained by RT-PCR analysis. Although the occurrence of WVMV in Italy had been posited in the late 1960s, no molecular information had been reported for any Italian isolate prior to this study. Subsequent phylogenetic analyses based on NIb and CP genes placed the WVMV Italian isolate within a large clade identified in the genus Potyvirus as the BCMV supergroup. Based on the increasing number of reports of the virus worldwide, we attempted an exploratory analysis of its genetic diversity and possible mechanisms that may have shaped its geographic population structure. Relying on the N-terminus of the CP, available for twenty WVMV isolates from Europe, Asia, and Oceania, sixteen different haplotypes were identified. A high haplotype diversity was found, particularly relevant in the European population. The measured dN/dS ratio led to the assumption that the target region is under purifying selection. Tests evaluating the neutrality of nucleotide variability showed different results for the European and Asian groups. The estimation of inter-population genetic differentiation showed a high level of gene flow between the two populations. In an attempt to address this problem, we tested 340 EU agricultural topsoil samples for multiple pesticide residues. These samples originated from 4 representative EU case study sites (CSS), which covered 3 countries and four of the main EU crops: vegetable and orange production in Spain (S-V and S-O, respectively), grape production in Portugal (P-G), and potato production in the Netherlands (N-P). Soil samples were collected between 2015 and 2018 after harvest or before the start of the growing season, depending on the CSS. Conventional and organic farming results were compared in S-V, S-O and N-P. Soils from conventional farms presented mostly mixtures of pesticide residues, with a maximum of 16 residues/sample. Soils from organic farms had significantly fewer residues, with a maximum of 5 residues/sample. The residues with the highest frequency of detection and the highest content in soil were herbicides: glyphosate and its main metabolite AMPA (P-G, N-P, S-O), and pendimethalin (S-V). Total residue content in soil reached values of 0.8 mg kg-1 for S-V, 2 mg kg-1 for S-O and N-P, and 12 mg kg-1 for P-G. Organic soils presented 70-90% lower residue concentrations than the corresponding conventional soils. There is a severe knowledge gap concerning the effects of the accumulated and complex mixtures of pesticide residues found in soil on soil biota and soil health. Safety benchmarks should be defined and introduced into (soil) legislation as soon as possible. Soil remediation techniques should be developed to keep the levels of pesticide residues below such benchmarks. Furthermore, the process of transitioning to organic farming should take into consideration the residue mixtures and their residence time in soil. &#160;</p>

2. It then travels through the flow field, causing a cascade of events resulting in erosion, noise, vibration and the cavitation shedding process. Despite that the accumulated data points evidently to the presence of the shock waves, the direct measurements hardly exist - and even then, they are very expensive and time consuming to perform. In the present paper, the possibility of detecting shock waves inside cavitating flow is shown. The methodology bases on using two conventional high speed cameras. With the first one cavitating flow from a distance is observed, determining the position of the wave, while the second camera with a microscopic lens enables a close-up view to determine the number and size change of air bubbles as a shock wave passed them. By calibration and reference measurements the amplitude of the shock waves was determined. This relatively simple approach enabled the first observation of shockwaves which occur at the cavitation cloud collapse (downstream of the attached cavity). Several examples of shock wave dynamics are shown and how they influence the general cavitation cloud behaviour. Shock wave front velocities and local pressure waves caused by cloud collapse were estimated from visualization, reaching values to more than 700 m/s and over 5 MPa respectively.
kavitacija", "visokofrekvenčno snemanje", "0404 agricultural biotechnology", "cavitation", "13. Agriculture has contributed substantially to a reduction in global SOC through cultivation, thus there has been renewed focus on management practices which minimize SOC losses and increase SOC gain as pathways towards maintaining healthy soils and reducing net greenhouse gas emissions. Mechanistic models are frequently used to aid in identifying these pathways due to their scalability and cost-effectiveness. Yet, they are often computationally costly and rely on input data that are often only available at coarse spatial resolutions. Herein, we build statistical meta-models of a multifactorial crop model in order to both (a) obtain a simplified model response and (b) explore the biophysical determinants of SOC responses to management and the geospatial heterogeneity of SOC dynamics across Europe. Using 5600 unique simulations of crop growth from the gridded Environmental Policy Integrated Climate-based Gridded Agricultural Model (EPIC-IIASA GAM) covering 86,000 simulation units across Europe, we build multiple polynomial regression ensemble meta-models for unique combinations of climate and soil across Europe in order to predict SOC responses to varying management intensities. We find that our biophysically-explicit meta models are highly accurate (R2 = 0.97) representations of the full mechanistic model and can be used in lieu of the full EPIC-IIASA GAM model for the estimation of SOC responses to cropland management. Model stratification by means of climate and soil clustering improved the performance of the meta-models compared to the full EU-scale model. In regional and local validations of the meta-model predictions, we find that the meta-models largely capture broad SOC dynamics such as the linear nature of SOC responses to residue application, yet they often underestimate the magnitude of SOC responses to management. Furthermore, we find notable differences between the results from the biophysically-specific models throughout Europe, which point to spatially-distinct SOC responses to management choices such as nitrogen fertilizer application rates and residue retention that illustrate the potential for these models to be used for future management applications. While more accurate input data, calibration, and validation will be needed to accurately predict SOC change, we demonstrate the use of our meta-models for biophysical cluster and field study scale analyses of broad SOC dynamics with basically zero fine-tuning of the models needed. This work provides a framework for simplifying large-scale agricultural models and identifies the opportunities for using these meta-models for assessing SOC responses to management at a variety of scales.
2. This study investigated the amount of OH formed during hydrodynamic cavitation using salicylic acid dosimetry. The radical’s amount was evaluated by quantifying the concentration of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, catechol and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. Two concentrations of the dosimeter in tap water were investigated, 50 and 300 mg L−1 (pH approx. 2.5). After 90 min of cavitation using a Venturi constriction a sum of the three products was determined at 0.97 µg mL−1 and 1.81 µg mL−1, respectively. However, during the investigation the anomalies were detected in the cavitation development when higher concentration of salicylic acid was used – cavitation appeared more gentle, with less intense collapses, unrelated to the one in pure water. Detailed observations of cavitation and additional bubble dynamics simulations revealed that the decreased surface tension of the acidified salicylic acid solution is the most influential physical characteristic. Further experiments on nucleation and coalescence showed that high concentration of salicylic acid also leads to longer stability of the bubbles and prevents their coalescence due to short-range repulsive forces (steric hindrance), which results in less violent bubble collapse. We also discuss the importance of an appropriate amount of the dosimeter for correct evaluation of OH production in a given cavitation device (50 mg L−1 for the present one). We assessed the response of the microbial community of a heavy metal-contaminated soil when exposed to short-term (48 h) variations in air temperature, soil humidity or ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the absence and presence of Enchytraeus crypticus (soil invertebrate). Each of the climate scenarios simulated significantly altered at least one of the microbial parameters measured. Irrespective of the presence or absence of invertebrates, the effects were particularly marked upon exposure to increased air temperature and alterations in soil moisture levels (drought and flood scenarios). The observed effects can be partly explained by significant alterations in soil properties such as pH, dissolved organic carbon, and water-extractable heavy metals, which were observed for all scenarios in comparison to standard conditions. The occurrence of invertebrates mitigated some of the impacts observed on the soil microbial community, particularly in bacterial abundance, richness, diversity, and metabolic activity. The effects of this phenomenon are soil deterioration with reduced crop performance and yield. This study aims to assess soil disturbance by measuring the level of compaction caused by the harvesting operations of Phalaris arundinacea L. P. arundinacea is a species that lends itself to biomass production and phytoremediation of contaminated soils; it adapts to difficult soil conditions, outperforming other species in terms of ease of planting, cost, maturity time, yield, and contamination levels. The crop was sown in three plots of the experimental teaching farm of the University of Tuscia, Viterbo, Italy. Following a detailed analysis of the chemical–physical characteristics of the soil, minimum tillage was chosen in order to concentrate on harvesting operations, which were carried out with a disc mower coupled to a tractor. This was followed by penetration resistance and soil moisture measurements to verify the incidence of the operations and the effect of the type of crop on compaction. On the study site, measurements were taken at points that the wheels of the tractor had gone over and at points that they had not. The soil analysis results indicate different chemical–physical characteristics between the two areas, the texture being frankly sandy to clayey. Penetration resistance measurements indicated differences for the first 20 cm between the part that was covered by the tractor’s tyres and the part that was left touched but also between the three plots. Moisture influenced penetration resistance. This study provides an evaluation of the first data obtained from a project that will last four years and which will explore the dynamics between soil, cultivation, and harvesting operations, giving a fundamental basis for further investigation of further harvesting operations and soil characteristics, which are crucial for planning and managing crops and reducing impacts on the soil in order to preserve it.

2. These discrepancies are confusing for policy and it is thus important to have scientific clarity on the basis of the assessment outcomes. Such clear insights can enable harmonisation of the different assessments. This review explores current state of the art approaches and methodologies used in bioenergy assessments, and identifies key elements that are critical determinants of bioenergy potentials. We apply the lessons learnt from the review exercise to compare and harmonise a selected set of country based bioenergy potential studies, and provide recommendations for conducting more comprehensive assessments. Depending on scenario assumptions, the harmonised technical biomass potential estimates up to 2030 in the selected countries range from 5.2 to 27.3 EJ in China, 1.1 to 18.8 EJ in India, 2.0 to 10.9 EJ in Indonesia, 1.6 to 7.0 EJ in Mozambique and 9.3 to 23.5 EJ in the US. From the review, we observed that generally, current studies do not cover all the basic (sustainability) elements expected in an ideal bioenergy assessment and there are marked differences in the level of parametric detail and methodological transparency between studies. Land availability and suitability lack spatial detail and especially degraded and marginal lands are poorly evaluated. Competition for water resources is hardly taken into account and biomass yields are based mostly on crude ecological zoning criteria. A few studies take into account improvements in management of agricultural and forestry production systems, but the underlying assumptions are hardly discussed. Competition for biomass resources among the various applications is crudely analysed in most studies and key assumptions such as demographic dynamics, biodiversity protection criteria, etc. are not explicitly discussed. To facilitate more comprehensive bioenergy assessments, we recommend an integrated analytical framework that includes all the key factors, employs high resolution geo-referenced datasets and accounts for potential feedback effects.
greenhouse-gas", "spatial-distribution", "0211 other engineering and technologies", "Review", "02 engineering and technology", "7. They are habitat for humans, animals and plants and thus also the basis of human nutrition. They store water and nutrients that they provide to growing plants and convert dead organic substances into plant-available nutrients through soil organisms. Soils thus play a central role in global material cycles and thus also in the climate-relevant carbon cycle. In addition, soils protect the newly formed groundwater from contamination after infiltration of precipitation water and passage through the soil body through filtering and chemical-physical bonding, so that clean groundwater can be created, which feeds surface waters or can be treated as drinking water. Since soils can only develop or re-form very slowly (centurys to millennia) from the rock, the protection of existing soils from removal, sealing, compaction, etc. is a central human task. The legal basis for the protection of the diverse natural functions of soil in Germany is the Federal Soil Protection Act 1998 (BBodSchG §2(2)(1) and (2)) together with the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance, which was recently amended and will enter into force in August 2023. Cocoa based agroforestry systems are credited for stocking significant amounts of carbon and hence have the potential to mitigate climate change. Since cocoa yields decrease non-linearly with increasing shade, a need is to design optimal cocoa agroforestry systems with high yields and high carbon stocks. We estimated the carbon stocked in a network of 229 permanent sample plots in cacao-based agroforestry systems and natural forests in five Central American countries. Carbon stocks were fractioned by both system compartments (aboveground, roots, soil, litter, dead wood – fine and coarse, and total) and tree use/form (cocoa, timber, fruit, bananas, shade and ornamentals, and palms). Cocoa plantations were assigned to a five-class typology and tested for independence with growing region using contingency analysis. Most Central American cocoa plantations had mixed or productive shade canopies. Only 4% of cocoa plantations were full sun or rustic (cocoa under thinned natural forest). Cocoa tree density was low (548 ± 192 trees ha−1). Total carbon (soil + biomass + dead biomass) was 117 ± 47 Mg ha−1, with 51 Mg ha−1 in the soil and 49 Mg ha−1 (42% of total carbon) in aboveground biomass (cocoa and canopy trees). Cocoa trees accumulated 9 Mg C ha−1 (18% of carbon in aboveground biomass). Timber and fruit trees stored 65% of aboveground carbon. The annual rate of accumulation of carbon in aboveground biomass ranged between 1.3 and 2.6 Mg C ha−1 y−1. Trade-offs between carbon levels and yields were explored qualitatively using functional relationships documented in the scientific and technical literature, and expert knowledge. We argue that it is possible to design cocoa-based AFS with good yields (cocoa and shade canopy) and high carbon stock levels. The botanical composition of the shade canopy provides a large set of morphological and functional traits that can be used to optimize shade canopy design. Our results offer Central American cocoa producers a rigorous estimate of carbon stocks in their cocoa plantations. This knowledge may help them to certify and sell their cocoa, timber, fruits and other goods to niche markets with good prices. Our results will also assist governments and the private sector in (i) designing better legal, institutional and policy frameworks, local and national, promoting an agriculture with trees and (ii) contributing to the development of the national monitoring, reporting and verification systems required by the international community to access funding and payment for ecosystem services.
0106 biological sciences", "certification", "F08 - Systèmes et modes de culture", "rendement des cultures", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_1920", "stockage", "01 natural sciences", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_10176", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_5524", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_7427", "K01 - Foresterie - Considérations générales", "biomasse", "Theobroma cacao", "service", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_1666", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_1301", "plante d'ombrage", "agroforesterie", "2. To respond to the challenges posed by climate change and soil degradation, there is a need to better integrate scientific soil knowledge into the practice. The aim of this paper is to better understand the access to soil knowledge in France and identify opportunities for further improvement, with a particular focus on the difference of point of view between six categories of stakeholders. This study is based on 1951 responses from a participatory stakeholders’ consultation we conducted in France. Our results showed that most stakeholders considered the knowledge they have access to as not adapted to their needs. They also expressed that knowledge sharing between stakeholders was not sufficient. To improve access to soil knowledge, stakeholders suggested adapting at the territorial level the content of soil knowledge shared and transferred, as well as improving ways of sharing and transfer soil knowledge. Additionally, stakeholders valued different exchange networks based on their type of knowledge. Stakeholders with more theoretical soil knowledge (public authorities, NGOs, researchers) stated being more interested in networks between policy, science and society. However, networks with farmers and advisors were more favored by stakeholders with empirical soil knowledge. Considering our findings, in order to strengthen knowledge transfer and sharing, we encourage the promotion of the profession of scientific mediator, as well as the implementation of Living Labs and Lighthouse farms to bring together various stakeholders at a local level towards innovation, training and education. The ability of soil microorganisms to perform biogeochemical processes is critical for sustaining forest productivity and has a direct impact on decomposition dynamics and carbon storage potential. The Wind River Canopy Crane Research Forest in SW, WA, provided a unique opportunity to study a forest chronosequence and the residual effects of harvesting on the SMC in comparison to old-growth forests. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of clear-cutting and stand age on temporal dynamics of SMC and physiological stress markers using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiling. Soil microbial PLFA profiles were determined seven times over 22 months (Nov. 02 to Sep. 04) in old-growth coniferous forest stands (300-500 years) and 8 (CC8)- or 25 (CC25)-year-old replanted clear-cuts. PLFA patterns of the SMC shifted because of clear-cutting, but seasonal temporal changes had greater shifts than differences among stand age. The microbial biomass (total PLFA) and bacterial, fungal, and selected other PLFAs were significantly reduced in CC8 but not in CC25 sites relative to the old-growth sites. An increase in stress indicators [PLFA ratios of saturated/monsaturated and (cy17:0 + cy19:0)/(16:1omega7 + 18:1omega7)] in late summer was related to water stress. Although the canopy and litter input are quite different for a 25-year clear-cut compared to virgin old-growth forest, we conclude that the composition of the microbial communities, 25 years after clear-cutting, has recovered sufficiently to be much more similar to old-growth forests than a recent clear-cut at this Pacific Northwest forest site. The study shows the potential of PLFA analysis for profiling microbial communities and their stress status under field conditions, but wide temporal shifts emphasize the need for sampling over seasons to fully interpret ecosystem management impacts on microbial populations.
Washington", "Time Factors", "Bacteria", "Fatty Acids", "Fungi", "Temperature", "Eukaryota", "Water", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. We have considered organic matter addition, no-tillage, crop rotation and organic agriculture as 'promising practices'; no organic matter input, conventional tillage, monoculture and conventional farming were taken as the respective references or 'standard practice' (baseline). Relative effects were analysed through indicator response ratio (RR) under each paired practice. For this we considered data of 30 long-term experiments collected from 13 case study sites in Europe and China as collated in the framework of the EU-China funded iSQAPER project. These were complemented with data from 42 long-term experiments across China and 402 observations of long-term trials published in the literature. Out of these, we only considered experiments covering at least five years. The results show that OM addition favourably affected all the indicators under consideration. The most favourable effect was reported on earthworm numbers, followed by yield, SOM content and soil aggregate stability. For pH, effects depended on soil type; OM input favourably affected the pH of acidic soils, whereas no clear trend was observed under NT. NT generally led to increased aggregate stability and greater SOM content in upper soil horizons. However, the magnitude of the relative effects varied, e.g. with soil texture. No-tillage practices enhanced earthworm populations, but not where herbicides or pesticides were applied to combat weeds and pests. Overall, in this review, yield slightly decreased under NT. Crop rotation had a positive effect on SOM content and yield; rotation with ley very positively influenced earthworms' numbers. Overall, crop rotation had little impact on soil pH and aggregate stability − depending on the type of intercrop; alternatively, rotation of arable crops only resulted in adverse effects. A clear positive trend was observed for earthworm abundance under organic agriculture. Further, organic agriculture generally resulted in increased aggregate stability and greater SOM content. Overall, no clear trend was found for pH; a decrease in yield was observed under organic agriculture in this review.
China", "Soil Science", "Organic chemistry", "Crop", "01 natural sciences", "Long-term field experiments", "Crop Productivity", "Soil quality", "Environmental science", "Organic Matter Dynamics", "Tillage", "Agricultural and Biological Sciences", "Soil quality indicators", "Crop rotation", "Management of Soil Fertility and Crop Productivity", "Soil water", "FOS: Mathematics", "Agricultural management practices", "Monoculture", "Crop Yield Stability", "Biology", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "Literature review", "Response ratio", "Soil science", "2. However, as the amount of unverified information increases, so too does the challenge in deciding which information to trust. Farmers, when learning about agricultural innovations, have historically relied on in-person advice from traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, such as agricultural advisers, to inform farm management. As more farmers go online for information, it is not clear whether they are now using digital information to corroborate in-person advice from traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, or if they are foregoing ￢ﾀﾘexpert￢ﾀﾙ advice in preference for peer-generated information. To fill this knowledge gap, we sought to understand how farmers in two contrasting European countries (Hungary and the UK) learnt about sustainable soil innovations and who influenced them to innovate. Through interviews with 82 respondents, we found farmers in both countries regularly used online sources to access soil information; some were prompted to change their soil management by farmer social media ￢ﾀﾘinfluencers￢ﾀﾙ. However, online information and interactions were not usually the main factor influencing farmers to change their practices. Farmers placed most trust in other farmers to learn about new soil practices and were less trusting of traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, particularly agricultural researchers from academic and government institutions, who they believed were not empathetic towards farmers￢ﾀﾙ needs. We suggest that some farmers may indeed have had enough of traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, instead relying more on their own peer networks to learn and innovate. We discuss ways to improve trustworthy knowledge exchange between agricultural stakeholders to increase uptake of sustainable soil management practices, while acknowledging the value of peer influence and online interactions for innovation and trust building.</p
Soil management", "S1", "Farms", "land and farm management", "social media", "0211 other engineering and technologies", "02 engineering and technology", "HM", "Trust", "Article", "Social media", "Soil", "Humans", "Innovation", "2. In particular, the timing of leaf senescence is of fundamental importance to trees' nutrient stoichiometry and drought tolerance and therefore to trees' vigor and fecundity. Nevertheless, there is no integrated view on the significance, and direction, of seasonal trends in leaf senescence, especially for years characterized by extreme weather events. Difficulties in the acquisition and analyses of hierarchical data can account for this. We collected four years of chlorophyll content index (CCI) measurements in thirty-eight individuals of four deciduous tree species (Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Populus tremula and Quercus robur) in Belgium, Norway and Spain, and analyzed these data using generalized additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS). As a result, (I) the phenological strategy and seasonal trend of leaf senescence in these tree species could be clarified for exceptionally dry and warm years, and (II) the daily average (air) temperature, global radiation, and vapor pressure deficit could be established as main drivers behind the variation in the timing of the senescence transition date. Our results show that the onset of the re-organization phase in the leaf senescence, which we approximated and defined as local minima in the second derivative of a CCI graph, was in all species mainly negatively affected by the average temperature, global radiation and vapor pressure deficit. All together the variables explained 89 to 98% of the variability in the leaf senescence timing. An additional finding is that the generalized beta type 2 and generalized gamma distributions are well suited to model the chlorophyll content index, while the senescence transition date can be modeled using the normal-exponential-student-t, generalized gamma and zero-inflated Box-Cox Cole and Green distributions for beech, oak and birch, and poplar, respectively.
0106 biological sciences", "Physics", "ta1183", "Silver birch", "15. Given its fundamental role in sustaining the human population, both the availability and quality of soil must be managed sustainably and protected. To ensure sustainable management we need to understand the intrinsic functional capacity of different soils across Europe and how it changes over time. Soil monitoring is needed to support evidence-based policies to incentivise sustainable soil management. To this aim, we assessed which soil attributes can be used as potential indicators of five soil functions; (1) primary production, (2) water purification and regulation, (3) carbon sequestration and climate regulation, (4) soil biodiversity and habitat provisioning and (5) recycling of nutrients. We compared this list of attributes to existing national (regional) and EU-wide soil monitoring networks. The overall picture highlighted a clearly unbalanced dataset, in which predominantly chemical soil parameters were included, and soil biological and physical attributes were severely under represented. Methods applied across countries for indicators also varied. At a European scale, the LUCAS-soil survey was evaluated and again confirmed a lack of important soil biological parameters, such as C mineralisation rate, microbial biomass and earthworm community, and soil physical measures such as bulk density. In summary, no current national or European monitoring system exists which has the capacity to quantify the five soil functions and therefore evaluate multi-functional capacity of a soil and in many countries no data exists at all. This paper calls for the addition of soil biological and some physical parameters within the LUCAS-soil survey at European scale and for further development of national soil monitoring schemes.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "570", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "Science", "QC1-999", "soil functions;soil monitoring networks;soil attributes;Europe", "Environmental technology. Therefore, N2O models have an important role to play. As models are comparatively cheap to run, they can be used to extrapolate field measurements to regional or national scales, to simulate emissions over long time periods, or to run scenarios to compare mitigation practices. Process￢ﾀﾐbased models can also be used as an aid to understanding the underlying processes, as they can simulate feedbacks and interactions that can be difficult to distinguish in the field. However, when applying models, it is important to understand the conceptual process differences in models, how conceptual understanding changed over time in various models, and the model requirements and limitations to ensure that the model is well suited to the purpose of the investigation and the type of system being simulated. The aim of this paper is to give the reader a high￢ﾀﾐlevel overview of some of the important issues that should be considered when modeling. This includes conceptual understanding of widely used models, common modeling techniques such as calibration and validation, assessing model fit, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty assessment. We also review examples of N2O modeling for different purposes and describe three commonly used process￢ﾀﾐbased N2O models (APSIM, DayCent, and DNDC).</p
Environmental Engineering", "Monitoring", "330", "Supplementary Data", "QH301 Biology", "Nitrous Oxide", "01 natural sciences", "QH301", "Soil", "NE/M021327/1", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "774378", "European Commission", "Waste Management and Disposal", "Water Science and Technology", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "Policy and Law", "Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)", "NE/P019455/1", "Uncertainty", "Agriculture", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. Here, we studied arable soil earthworm communities on wheat fields across a European climatic gradient, covering nine pedo￢ﾀﾐclimatic zones, from Mediterranean to Boreal (S to N) and from Lusitanian to Pannonian (W to E). In each zone, 20￢ﾀﾓ25 wheat fields under conventional or organic farming were sampled. Community metrics (total abundance, fresh mass, and species richness and composition) were combined with data on climate conditions, soil properties, and field management and analyzed with mixed models. There were no statistically discernible differences between organic and conventional farming for any of the community metrics. The effects of refined arable management factors were also not detected, except for an elevated proportion of subsurface￢ﾀﾐfeeding earthworms when crop residues were incorporated. Soil properties were not significantly associated with earthworm community variations, which in the case of soil texture was likely due to low variation in the data. Pedo￢ﾀﾐclimatic zone was an overridingly important factor in explaining the variation in community metrics. The Boreal zone had the highest mean total abundance (179￢ﾀﾉindividuals￢ﾀﾉm￢ﾈﾒ2) and fresh mass (86￢ﾀﾉg￢ﾀﾉm￢ﾈﾒ2) of earthworms while the southernmost Mediterranean zones had the lowest metrics (<1￢ﾀﾉindividual￢ﾀﾉm￢ﾈﾒ2 and <1￢ﾀﾉg￢ﾀﾉm￢ﾈﾒ2). Within each field, species richness was low across the zones, with the highest values being recorded at the Nemoral and North Atlantic zones (mean of 2￢ﾀﾓ3 species per field) and declining from there toward north and south. No litter￢ﾀﾐdwelling species were found in the southernmost, Mediterranean zones. These regional trends were discernibly related to climate, with the community metrics declining with the increasing mean annual temperature. The current continent￢ﾀﾐwide warming of Europe and related increase of severe and rapid onsetting droughts will likely deteriorate the living conditions of earthworms, particularly in southern Europe. The lack of interaction between the pedo￢ﾀﾐclimatic zone and the farming system in our data for any of the earthworm community metrics may indicate limited opportunities for alleviating the negative effects of a warming climate in cereal field soils of Europe.</p
arable fields", "Climate", "soil biodiversity", "Agriculture", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "organicfarming", "global warming", "01 natural sciences", "630", "Article", "Europe", "Soil", "climate change", "macrofauna", "organic farming", "Animals", "0401 agriculture", " forestry", " and fisheries", "farming systems", "Oligochaeta", "regional distributions", "Triticum", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences
Nuutinen, Visa, Briones, Maria J.I., Schrader, Stefan, Dekemati, Igor, Grujić, Nikola, Hyvönen, Juha, Ivask, Mari, Lassen, Simon Bo, Lloret, Eva, Ollio, Irene, Pérez-Rodríguez, Paula, Simon, Barbara, Sutri, Merit, de Sutter, Nancy, Brandt, Kristian K., Peltoniemi, Krista, Shanskiy, Merrit, Waeyenberge, Lieven, Martínez-Martínez, Silvia, Fernández-Calviño, David,
creator
https://doi.org/10.1002/eap.3066
The soil overview map on a scale of 1:400 000 (BÜK400) depicts various soil societies, each of which differs in landscape terms due to its soil typological characteristics, its soil substrates (soil outlet rocks) and its relief location (morphology).
