Today, this ecosystem is facing a new threat from a proliferating native species, the bramble (Rubus ulmifolius Schott), which preferentially colonizes areas that were formerly cultivated and/or exposed to water infiltration. To identify a strategy for effective control of this colonization, in situ experiments testing disturbance regimes (shrub clearing and/or mixed grazing by sheep and goats) combined with the control of access to water resources (with or without drainage trenches) were undertaken between 2010 and 2013. Only clearing and grazing combined over 3 years led to significant changes in vegetation height and bramble cover as well as modifications in the floristic composition, diversity, similarity, and richness of the plant community. Neither a clearing operation carried out in 2010 alone, nor grazing alone, reduced bramble cover, and neither treatment increased the species richness of the plant community. Similarly, digging drainage trenches had no significant impact either on the plant community or on bramble cover. Our study suggests that only annual mechanical clearing coupled with sheep and goats grazing can significantly reduce bramble cover. This combined restoration treatment needs to be applied for at least 3 consecutive years to induce significant changes and enable this ecosystem to return to the dry grassland succession.
Population Density", "2. See abstract below: Soils are one of the major reservoirs of biological diversity on our planet because they host a huge richness of microorganisms. The fungal:bacterial (F:B) ratio targets two major functional groups of organisms in soils and can improve our understanding of their importance and efficiency for soil functioning. To better decipher the variability of this ratio and rank the environmental parameters involved, we used the French Soil Quality Monitoring Network – one of the most extensive and a priori-free soil sampling surveys, based on a systematic 16 km x 16 km grid and including more than 2,100 samples. F:B ratios, measured by quantitative PCR targeting the 18S and 16S rDNA genes, turned out to be heterogenously distributed, and spatially structured in geographical patterns across France. These distribution patterns differed from bacterial or fungal densities taken separately, supporting the hypothesis that the F:B ratio is not the mere addition of each density, but rather results from the complex interactions of the two functional groups. The F:B ratios were mainly influenced by soil characteristics and land management. Among soil characteristics, the pH and to a lesser extent the organic carbon content and the C:N ratio were the main drivers. These results improved our understanding of soil microbial communities, and from an operational point of view, they suggested that the F:B ratio should be a useful new bioindicator of soil status. The resulting dataset can be considered as a first step toward building up a robust repository essential to any bioindicator and aimed at guiding and helping decision-making.
2. This work aimed at (i) characterizing the effects of land use (Agroforestry, AF vs. Tree Plantation, TP) on 5-year-old black locust tree growth, tree biomass allocation, and tree C stocks at plot scale, and (ii) assessing the effect of land use on total carbon stocks (AF vs. TP vs. Crop Monoculture). Allometric equations were built for upscaling tree biomass at the plot scale. Biomass of understory vegetation and crops were estimated at the plot scale in the three land uses. Tree diameter was 19 % higher in the AF than in TP, likely due to different light microclimate, while tree height did not vary significantly between land uses. Tree biomass allocation to aboveground and belowground compartments (70 % and 30 % of total tree biomass, respectively) did not vary between land uses. Higher efficiency in building tree carbon stock was shown in agroforestry than in tree plantation per area unit. Trees accounted for 39 % and 66 % of total carbon stocks in biomass in AF and TP, respectively. Understory vegetation accounted for 8 % and 34 % of total carbon stocks in biomass in AF and TP, respectively. Study sites were located on the Hamburger Hallig, on the Western coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Between 2006 and 2009, salt marshes that have been under four levels of livestock density (0, 1-2 sheep/ha, 3-4 sheep/ha, 10 sheep/ha) for over 20 years were sampled using light traps and photoeclectors. Plant and moth species richness were highest under low stocking densities, moth species richness, however, showed no difference between low stocking densities and abandonment. Species richness of moths was only weakly correlated with vegetation parameters (species richness, vegetation height, cover and litter). Using additive diversity partitioning we show that no single grazing treatment harbored all recorded moth species and that grazing increases habitat heterogeneity within each treatment. Additionally, we show that moths react more sensitively to grazing than plants, and that therefore assessments of plant species richness in salt marshes do not allow conclusions on invertebrate diversity. For the evaluation of salt-marsh diversity, a multi-species approach should be favored combining plant and invertebrate assessments. A mosaic of abandoned sites and sites with low and intermediate stocking densities would benefit moth diversity in salt-marsh conservation. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Soil indicators can be used to define soil health and quantify the degree to which soils fulfil expected functions. Indicators are assessed using target and/or threshold values, which define achievable levels of the indicators or functions. However, defining robust targets and thresholds is not a trivial task, as they should account for soil, climate, land-use, management, and history, among others. This paper introduces and discusses (through theory and stakeholder feedback) four approaches to setting targets and thresholds: fixed, reference, distribution and relative change. Three approaches (not including relative change) are then illustrated using a case study, located in Denmark, Italy, and France, which highlights key strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Finally, a framework is presented that facilitates both choosing the most appropriate target/threshold method for a given context, and using targets/thresholds to trigger follow-up actions to promote soil health.
Conservation of Natural Resources", "Monitoring", "Supplementary Data", "QH301 Biology", "Denmark", "Framework", "610", "https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S030147972403127X-mmc1.docx", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "01 natural sciences", "QH301", "Soil", "framework", "Soil health", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "threshold", "Indicators", "[SDV.SA.SDS] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "SDG 15 - Life on Land", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "GE", "Targets", "soil health", "thresholds", "Agriculture", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "indicators", "monitoring", "Italy", "targets", "0401 agriculture", " forestry", " and fisheries", "Thresholds", "France", "GE Environmental Sciences
Matson, Amanda, Fantappiè, Maria, Campbell, Grant A., Miranda-Vélez, Jorge, Faber, Jack, Gomes, Lucas Carvalho, Hessel, Rudi, Lana, Marcos, Mocali, Stefano, Smith, Pete, Robinson, David, Bispo, Antonio, van Egmond, Fenny, Keesstra, Saskia, Saby, Nicolas P. The model vineyard-soil (Mâcon-France) experienced a long-term field-experiment that consisted in amendments and vegetations with various materials and plants. We studied specifically the effect of Straw (S) and Conifer Compost (CC) organic amendments and Clover (Cl) and Fescue (F) vegetation on the fate of copper (fungicide) in the surface layer of this loamy soil, through a comparison with the Non Amended soil (NA). After collection the five soils were immediately physically fractionated in order to obtain 5 granulometric size-fractions. All soils and size-fractions were quantitatively characterized in terms of granulometry, chemical content and copper distribution, speciation and bioavailability to bacteria and plants. The results showed strong increases of soil-constituents aggregation for all treatments (Cl>CC>S>F>NA), in relation with the increased cementation of soil-constituents by organic matter (OM). The distribution patterns of all major elements and organic carbon were found highly variable within the soil sub-fractions and also between the 5 treatments. Due to their specific inorganic and organic composition, soil sub-fractions can thus be considered as a specific microbial habitat. Added OM accumulated preferentially in the 20-2 μm and in the >250 μm of the 5 soils. The distribution patterns of copper as well as its speciation and bioavailability to bacteria in the soil sub-fractions were shown to be strongly different among the five soils, in relation with OM distribution. Our results also suggest that Cu-bioavailability to plants is controlled by soil-rhizosphere structure. Altogether our results permitted to show that long-term organic management of a vineyard soil induced stable modifications of soil physical and chemical properties at both macro and micro-scales. These modifications affected in turn the micro-scale biogeochemistry of copper, and especially its bioavailability to bacteria and plants.
2. Based on a simple ratio between CO2 anthropogenic emissions and SOC stocks worldwide, it has been suggested that a 0.4% (4 per 1000) yearly increase in SOC stocks could compensate for current anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Here, we used a reverse RothC modelling approach to estimate the amount of C inputs to soils required to sustain current SOC stocks and to increase them by 4￢ﾀﾰ per year over a period of 30ￂﾠyears. We assessed the feasibility of this aspirational target first by comparing the required C input with net primary productivity (NPP) flowing to the soil, and second by considering the SOC saturation concept. Calculations were performed for mainland France, at a 1ￂﾠkm grid cell resolution. Results showed that a 30%￢ﾀﾓ40% increase in C inputs to soil would be needed to obtain a 4￢ﾀﾰ increase per year over a 30￢ﾀﾐyear period. 88.4% of cropland areas were considered unsaturated in terms of mineral￢ﾀﾐassociated SOC, but characterized by a below target C balance, that is, less NPP available than required to reach the 4￢ﾀﾰ aspirational target. Conversely, 90.4% of unimproved grasslands were characterized by an above target C balance, that is, enough NPP to reach the 4￢ﾀﾰ objective, but 59.1% were also saturated. The situation of improved grasslands and forests was more evenly distributed among the four categories (saturated vs. unsaturated and above vs below target C balance). Future data from soil monitoring networks should enable to validate these results. Overall, our results suggest that, for mainland France, priorities should be (1) to increase NPP returns in cropland soils that are unsaturated and have a below target carbon balance and (2) to preserve SOC stocks in other land uses.</p
[SDV.SA]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences", "Carbon Sequestration", "550", "[SDE.MCG]Environmental Sciences/Global Changes", "RothC", "01 natural sciences", "630", "climate change mitigation", "12. In the present study, we investigated Sentinel-l radar signal in order to analyze its behavior as function of soil moisture and soil roughness. In addition, we evaluated the approach combining the modified Integral Equation Model (IEM-B) and the Water Cloud Model (WCM) for estimating soil moisture in western France. Soil surface parameters were acquired over 4 campaigns during which composite soil samples were collected simultaneously to Sentinel-l acquisition dates. The dates of those campaigns were defined according to the evolution of the soil surface condition, during the agricultural season. The sensitivity of radar signal σ0 to soil moisture was studied over the 22 reference fields and over the Thiessen polygons created around the measurement points. Linear relationships are observed between the radar signal and volumetric soil moisture less than 35 vol. % with higher sensitivity for VH polarization (0.41 dB/vol.% in VH against 0.26 dB/vol.% in VV). The best correlation coefficients (R) were observed for the VH polarization with the Zs roughness parameter (R= 0.53 and 0.29 for reference fields and Thiessen polygons, respectively). Following that, a comparison of in situ soil moisture with that predicted based on approach proposed by [1], using Neural network algorithm with a training using the two models IEM-B and Water Cloud Model (WCM) allowed an accuracy with an RMSE ranging between 6.1 and 6.5 vol. % for reference fields and Thiessen polygons respectively. It is imperative to increase confidence in long￢ﾀﾐterm predictions of SOC dynamics by reducing the uncertainty in model estimates. We evaluated SOC simulated from an ensemble of 26 process￢ﾀﾐbased C models by comparing simulations to experimental data from seven long￢ﾀﾐterm bare￢ﾀﾐfallow (vegetation￢ﾀﾐfree) plots at six sites: Denmark (two sites), France, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The decay of SOC in these plots has been monitored for decades since the last inputs of plant material, providing the opportunity to test decomposition without the continuous input of new organic material. The models were run independently over multi￢ﾀﾐyear simulation periods (from 28 to 80ￂﾠyears) in a blind test with no calibration (Bln) and with the following three calibration scenarios, each providing different levels of information and/or allowing different levels of model fitting: (a) calibrating decomposition parameters separately at each experimental site (Spe); (b) using a generic, knowledge￢ﾀﾐbased, parameterization applicable in the Central European region (Gen); and (c) using a combination of both (a) and (b) strategies (Mix). We addressed uncertainties from different modelling approaches with or without spin￢ﾀﾐup initialization of SOC. Changes in the multi￢ﾀﾐmodel median (MMM) of SOC were used as descriptors of the ensemble performance. On average across sites, Gen proved adequate in describing changes in SOC, with MMM equal to average SOC (and standard deviation) of 39.2 (ￂﾱ15.5)ￂﾠMgￂﾠC/ha compared to the observed mean of 36.0 (ￂﾱ19.7)ￂﾠMgￂﾠC/ha (last observed year), indicating sufficiently reliable SOC estimates. Moving to Mix (37.5ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ16.7ￂﾠMgￂﾠC/ha) and Spe (36.8ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ19.8ￂﾠMgￂﾠC/ha) provided only marginal gains in accuracy, but modellers would need to apply more knowledge and a greater calibration effort than in Gen, thereby limiting the wider applicability of models.</p
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "330", "550", "Supplementary Data", "soil organic carbon dynamics", "QH301 Biology", "[SDE.MCG]Environmental Sciences/Global Changes", "Soil organic carbon dynamics", "bare‐fallow soils", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "630", "protocol for model comparison", "Russia", "QH301", "Soil", "NE/M021327/1", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "Environmental Chemistry", "774378", "process based models", "European Commission", "[SDV.SA.SDS] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "General Environmental Science", "Sweden", "Global and Planetary Change", "Ecology", "Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)", "NE/P019455/1", "bare-fallow soils", "Uncertainty", "Agriculture", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. However, successful application of metabarcoding to biodiversity monitoring requires universal primers with high taxonomic coverage that amplify highly variable, short metabarcodes with high taxonomic resolution. Moreover, reliable and extensive reference databases are essential to match the outcome of metabarcoding analyses with available taxonomy and biomonitoring indices. Benthic invertebrates, particularly insects, are key taxa for freshwater bioassessment. Nevertheless, few studies have so far assessed markers for metabarcoding of freshwater macrobenthos. Here we combined in silico and laboratory analyses to test the performance of different markers amplifying regions in the 18S rDNA (Euka02), 16S rDNA (Inse01) and COI (BF1_BR2￢ﾀﾐCOI) genes, and developed an extensive database of benthic macroinvertebrates of France and Europe, with a particular focus on key insect orders (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera). Analyses on 1,514 individuals representing different taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates showed very different amplification success across primer combinations. The Euka02 marker showed the highest universality, while the Inse01 marker showed excellent performance for the amplification of insects. BF1_BR2￢ﾀﾐCOI showed the highest resolution, while the resolution of Euka02 was often limited. By combining our data with GenBank information, we developed a curated database including sequences representing 822 genera. The heterogeneous performance of the different primers highlights the complexity in identifying the best markers, and advocates for the integration of multiple metabarcodes for a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of ecological impacts on freshwater biodiversity.

0106 biological sciences", "570", "amplification rate; biomonitoring; biotic indices; cytochrome c oxidase I; environmental DNA; freshwater biodiversity; macroinvertebrates; primer bias; taxonomic resolution; universality", "500", "Fresh Water", "Biodiversity", "15. The purpose of the present study was to compare eight different ecotoxicological endpoints on the same set of metal-contaminated soils that were collected from seven series of soils sampled during field trials. The endpoints are based on three microbial assays (potential nitrification rate [PNR], substrate-induced respiration [SIR], and basal respiration [BR]) and two plant growth tests, one of which included symbiotic N fixation. The overall sensitivity of the endpoints to detect statistically significant adverse effects ranked as follows: PNR > SIR (lag time) > plant yield and N fixation > SIR (respiration after 24 and 48 h) > BR. The lowest adverse effect concentrations were found with the PNR at 7 mg kg￢ﾈﾒ1 of Cd and 107 mg kg￢ﾈﾒ1 of Zn. The variability of these endpoints among different uncontaminated soils was additionally assessed on 14 soil samples. That variability showed a strong correlation with sensitivity scores, illustrating that metal-sensitive endpoints have a large natural variability. We question the ecological relevance of highly sensitive microbial assays, because they tend to have a large natural variability. The identification of toxicity in the field requires endpoints that are highly sensitive and that do not vary greatly among soils (i.e., robust); however, no such endpoint was found in the present study. The endpoints that combined average sensitivity and robustness were SIR (lag time), clover yield, and N fixation in clover.

Hungary", "Sewage", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. This information is nevertheless essential, not only to compute the water balance of irrigated plots and to schedule irrigation, but also for the management of water resources at regional scales. The aim of the present study was to detect irrigation timing using time series of surface soil moisture (SSM) derived from Sentinel-1 radar observations. The method consisted of assessing the direction of change of surface soil moisture (SSM) between observations and a water balance model, and to use thresholds to be calibrated. The performance of the approach was assessed on the F-score quantifying the accuracy of the irrigation event detections and ranging from 0 (none of the irrigation timing is correct) to 100 (perfect irrigation detection). The study focused on five irrigated and one rainfed plot of maize in South-West France, where the approach was tested using in situ measurements and surface soil moisture (SSM) maps derived from Sentinel-1 radar data. The use of in situ data showed that (1) irrigation timing was detected with a good accuracy (F-score in the range (80￢ﾀﾓ83) for all plots) and (2) the optimal revisit time between two SSM observations was 2￢ﾀﾓ4 days. The higher uncertainties of microwave SSM products, especially when the crop is well developed (normalized difference of vegetation index (NDVI) > 0.7), degraded the score (F-score = 69), but various possibilities of improvement were discussed. This paper opens perspectives for the irrigation detection at the plot scale over large areas and thus for the improvement of irrigation water management.

[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "FAO-56", "2. From an environmental monitoring viewpoint, SOC sequestration is essential for mitigating the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. SOC dynamics in cropland soils should be further studied through various approaches including remote sensing. In order to predict SOC content over croplands in southwestern France (area of 22,177 km²), this study addresses (i) the influence of the dates on which Sentinel-2 (S2) images were acquired in the springs of 2017–2018 as well as the influence of the soil sampling period of a set of samples collected between 2005 and 2018, (ii) the use of soil moisture products (SMPs) derived from Sentinel-1/2 satellites to analyze the influence of surface soil moisture on model performance when included as a covariate, and (iii) whether the spatial distribution of SOC as mapped using S2 is related to terrain-derived attributes. The influences of S2 image dates and soil sampling periods were analyzed for bare topsoil. The dates of the S2 images with the best performance (RPD ≥ 1.7) were 6 April and 26 May 2017, using soil samples collected between 2016 and 2018. The soil sampling dates were also analyzed using SMP values. Soil moisture values were extracted for each sample and integrated into partial least squares regression (PLSR) models. The use of soil moisture as a covariate had no effect on the prediction performance of the models; however, SMP values were used to select the driest dates, effectively mapping topsoil organic carbon. Based on an intensive literature review and results from previous experiences in member states a scenario framework was developed (climate, land use, and management changes) and common methodologies (statistical methods, simple and/or more sophisticated models) were identified, used or validated to forecast how selected soil ecosystem services (SES) and soil threats (ST) will change according to climate, land-use and management changes.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "330", "550", "Supplementary Data", "soil organic carbon dynamics", "QH301 Biology", "[SDE.MCG]Environmental Sciences/Global Changes", "Soil organic carbon dynamics", "bare‐fallow soils", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "630", "protocol for model comparison", "Russia", "QH301", "Soil", "NE/M021327/1", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "Environmental Chemistry", "774378", "process based models", "European Commission", "[SDV.SA.SDS] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "Institut für Biochemie und Biologie", "General Environmental Science", "Sweden", "Global and Planetary Change", "Ecology", "Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)", "NE/P019455/1", "bare-fallow soils", "Uncertainty", "Agriculture", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15.
Conservation of Natural Resources", "Monitoring", "Supplementary Data", "QH301 Biology", "Denmark", "Framework", "610", "https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S030147972403127X-mmc1.docx", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "01 natural sciences", "QH301", "Soil", "framework", "Soil health", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "threshold", "Indicators", "[SDV.SA.SDS] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "SDG 15 - Life on Land", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "GE", "Targets", "soil health", "thresholds", "Agriculture", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "indicators", "monitoring", "Italy", "targets", "0401 agriculture", " forestry", " and fisheries", "Thresholds", "France", "GE Environmental Sciences
https://doi.org/2164/24592
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Journal%20of%20Environmental%20Management

[[[-54.52, 2.05], [-54.52, 51.15], [9.56, 51.15], [9.56, 2.05], [-54.52, 2.05
Map of the contents in total lime.
