In an attempt to address this problem, we tested 340 EU agricultural topsoil samples for multiple pesticide residues. These samples originated from 4 representative EU case study sites (CSS), which covered 3 countries and four of the main EU crops: vegetable and orange production in Spain (S-V and S-O, respectively), grape production in Portugal (P-G), and potato production in the Netherlands (N-P). Soil samples were collected between 2015 and 2018 after harvest or before the start of the growing season, depending on the CSS. Conventional and organic farming results were compared in S-V, S-O and N-P. Soils from conventional farms presented mostly mixtures of pesticide residues, with a maximum of 16 residues/sample. Soils from organic farms had significantly fewer residues, with a maximum of 5 residues/sample. The residues with the highest frequency of detection and the highest content in soil were herbicides: glyphosate and its main metabolite AMPA (P-G, N-P, S-O), and pendimethalin (S-V). Total residue content in soil reached values of 0.8 mg kg-1 for S-V, 2 mg kg-1 for S-O and N-P, and 12 mg kg-1 for P-G. Organic soils presented 70-90% lower residue concentrations than the corresponding conventional soils. There is a severe knowledge gap concerning the effects of the accumulated and complex mixtures of pesticide residues found in soil on soil biota and soil health. Safety benchmarks should be defined and introduced into (soil) legislation as soon as possible. Soil remediation techniques should be developed to keep the levels of pesticide residues below such benchmarks. Furthermore, the process of transitioning to organic farming should take into consideration the residue mixtures and their residence time in soil. &#160;</p>

2. The bufferstrip was a 3.5 m wide unfertilised grass strip adjacent to a ditch on an arable field. In total 24 groundwater wells were installed in 4 transects perpendicular to the ditch to determine Cl, NO3 and δ15N concentrations. Piezometers were installed to assess the groundwater flow, which was in the direction of the ditch with small downward leakage across a peat layer at about 3 m depth. Nitrogen was dominantly present as nitrate (NO3). The NO3-N concentrations under the bufferstrip were significantly lower than under the adjacent arable field. The lower concentrations were due to dilution, uptake by grass and denitrification. Nitrate was actively removed in the bufferstrip, since the Cl/NO3 ratios were higher in the bufferstrip than in the remainder of the field. Furthermore, δ15N data indicated that denitrification occurred in the groundwater and increased with decreasing distance to the ditch. NO3-N loads to the ditch were estimated at 8.5 kg ha−1yr−1, which is relatively low for this area. We can, however, not determine whether these relatively low NO3-N loads were causally related to the reduced NO3-N concentrations in the bufferstrip. Nevertheless, the results of the present study are promising and justify additional research on the efficiency of bufferstrips to reduce NO3 concentrations in shallow groundwater, and subsequently reduce NO3 loading of surface water, under Dutch conditions.
coastal-plain", "Soil Science", "netherlands", "dynamics", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "01 natural sciences", "6. Consequences of methodological choices and data sensitivity on CFPs of feed ingredients were explored to improve comparison and interpretation of CFP studies. Methods and data for emissions from cultivation and processing, land use (LU), and land use change (LUC) were analyzed. For six ingredients (maize, wheat, palm kernel expeller, rapeseed meal, soybean meal, and beet pulp), CFPs resulting from a single change in methods and data were compared with a reference CFP, i.e., based on IPCC Tier 1 methods, and data from literature. Results show that using more detailed methods to compute N2O emissions from cultivation hardly affected reference CFPs, except for methods to determine leaching (contributing to indirect N2O emissions) in which the influence is about -7 to +12 %. Overall, CFPs appeared most sensitive to changes in crop yield and applied synthetic fertilizer N. The inclusion of LULUC emissions can change CFPs considerably, i.e., up to 877 %. The level of LUC emissions per feed ingredient highly depends on the method chosen, as well as on assumptions on area of LUC, C stock levels (mainly aboveground C and soil C), and amortization period. We concluded that variability in methods and data can significantly affect CFPs of feed ingredients and hence CFPs of livestock products. Transparency in methods and data is therefore required. For harmonization, focus should be on methods to calculate leaching and emissions from LULUC. Although accretion rates and the resulting surface elevation change largely determine the resilience of salt marshes to sea-level rise (SLR), the effect of livestock grazing on accretion rates has been little studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of livestock grazing on salt-marsh accretion rates. We hypothesise that accretion will be lower in grazed compared to ungrazed salt marshes. In four study sites along the mainland coast of the Wadden Sea (in the south-eastern North Sea), accretion rates, sediment deposition rates, and soil compaction of grazed and ungrazed marshes were analysed using the Cs-137 radionuclide dating method. Accretion rates were on average 11.6 mm yr(-1) during recent decades and thus higher than current and projected rates of SLR. Neither accretion nor sediment deposition rates were significantly different between grazing treatments. Meanwhile, soil compaction was clearly affected by grazing with significantly higher dry bulk density on grazed compared to ungrazed parts. Based on these results, we conclude that other factors influence whether grazing has an effect on accretion and sediment deposition rates and that the effect of grazing on marsh growth does not follow a direct causal chain. It may have a great importance when interacting with other biotic and abiotic processes on the marsh. Crown Copyright (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd. However, this intensive arable production system also results in environmental degradation in terms of biodiversity loss and reduced soil and water quality. Adopting sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) reduces arable farmers’ reliance on fertilisers and pesticides. Therefore, SAPs contribute to enhancing farm sustainability and resilience. Despite the promising potential of SAPs, their adoption rates remain low. We investigate which combinations of SAPs are jointly adopted in portfolios and how the adoption rate of SAP portfolios can be improved. Specifically, this paper aims to explore the relationship between knowledge and the adoption of SAP portfolios. First, we investigate the SAP portfolios that are jointly adopted using Correlation Explanation. Second, we estimate a multivariate probit model to explore if SAP portfolios are complementary or substitutionary to each other. Finally, we run a partial least squares structural equation model to investigate how the level of knowledge and informal knowledge are associated with the adoption of SAP portfolios. Results show that both the level of knowledge and informal knowledge are positively related to the adoption of these SAPs that require initial investments or aim to reduce pesticide and fertiliser usage. However, we find no significant relationship between knowledge and the adoption of SAPs that are already subsidised by policymakers. We conclude that persuading farmers to adopt more SAPs requires policymakers to consider combinations of economic (e.g. subsidies) and behavioural policy interventions (e.g. facilitating peer-to-peer knowledge sharing).
2. Intl1 concentrations and national antibiotic usage were investigated as proxies to predict anthropogenic ARG pollution. Newly-developed multiplex qPCR assays were employed to investigate ARG profiles across 8 locations (L1-L8) in three countries (Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands) and to detect potential regional causes for variation. Two of these locations were further monitored, over the duration of one month. A total of 13 ARGs, Intl1 and 16S rRNA were quantified. ARG presence and concentrations initially increased from L1(Diepoldsau) to L3(Darmstadt). A continuous increase could not be observed at subsequent locations, with the large river volume likely being a major contributing factor for stability. ARG presence and concentrations fluctuated widely across different locations. L2(Basel) and L3 were the two most polluted locations, coinciding with these locations being well-developed pharmaceutical production locations. We draw attention to the characteristic, clearly distinct ARG profiles, with gene presence being consistent and gene concentrations varying significantly less over time than across different locations. Five genes were Rhine-typical (ermB, ermF, Intl1, sul1 and tetM). Intl1 and sul1 were the genes with highest and second-highest concentration, respectively. Aph(III)a and blaOXA were permanently introduced downstream of L1, indicating no source of these genes prior to L1. We highlight that correlations between Intl1 and ARG concentrations (R2 = 0.72) were driven by correlations to sul1 and disappeared when excluding sul1 from the analysis (R2 = 0.05). Intl1 therefore seems to be a good proxy for sul1 concentrations but not necessarily for overall (anthropogenic) ARG pollution. Aminoglycoside usage per country correlated with concentrations of aph(III)a and several unrelated antibiotic resistance genes (blaOXA,ermB, ermF and tetM). In this paper we confront the results of laboratory tests on growth, reproduction and survival of earthworms, in a polluted and a reference field soil with a field inventory of earthworms. The field inventory includes population density, biomass and demographic composition in life stages measured monthly over a period of one year. The field inventory showed that density and biomass was higher at the polluted field site, a result in conflict with the extrapolation of the laboratory tests that showed a decrease in population growth rate by 23% at this site compared to the reference. The field inventory and laboratory derived results agreed in the demographic composition of the population with more individuals in the younger age class at the polluted site compared to the reference. What were the most important factors determining the level of restoration success?
Location
Noard￢ﾀﾐFryslￃﾢn Bￃﾻtendyks, northwest Netherlands.
Methods
The frequencies of target plant species were recorded before de￢ﾀﾐembankment and monitored thereafter (1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10ￂﾠyr later) using permanent transects. Vegetation change was monitored using repeated mapping 14ￂﾠyr before and 1, 7 and 10ￂﾠyr after de￢ﾀﾐembankment. A large￢ﾀﾐscale factorial experiment with 72 sampling plots was set up to determine the effects of distance to a breach point, distance to a creek and grazing treatment on species composition. Abiotic data were also collected from the permanent transects and sampling plots on elevation, soil salinity and redox potential.
Results
Ten years after de￢ﾀﾐembankment, permanent transect data showed that 78% to 96% of the target species were found at the restoration site. Vegetation mapping, however, showed that the diversity of salt marsh communities was low, with 50% of the site covered by the secondary pioneer marsh community. A multivariate analogue of ANOVA indicated that the most important experimental factor determining species composition was the interaction between distance to the nearest creek and livestock grazing. The combination of proximity to a creek and exclusion from livestock grazing always resulted in development of the high marsh community. In contrast, the combination of being located far from a creek, grazed and situated at low elevation with accompanying high salinity resulted in development of the secondary pioneer marsh community.
Conclusions
Using target species as criteria, restoration success could be claimed 10ￂﾠyr after de￢ﾀﾐembankment. However, the diversity of communities in the salt marsh was lower than desired. Variable grazing regimes should be applied to high￢ﾀﾐelevation areas to prevent dominance by single species of tall grasses and to promote formation of vegetation mosaics. Low￢ﾀﾐelevation areas need lower grazing pressure. Also, an adequate soil drainage network should be preserved or constructed in low￢ﾀﾐelevation areas before de￢ﾀﾐembankment.

0106 biological sciences", "Salinity", "LAND", "Managed realignment", "Artificial saltmarsh", "NETHERLANDS", "Soil redox", "WADDEN SEA", "Soil drainage", "15. The warming treatment raised the plot daily temperature by ca. 1 ￂﾰC, while the drought treatment led to a reduction in soil moisture at the peak of the growing season that ranged from 26% at the SP site to 82% in the NL site. During the 7 years the experiment lasted (1999￢ﾀﾓ2005), we used the pin￢ﾀﾐpoint method to measure the species composition of plant communities and plant biomass, litterfall, and shoot growth of the dominant plant species at each site. A significantly lower increase in the number of species pin￢ﾀﾐpointed per transect was found in the drought plots at the SP site, where the plant community was still in a process of recovering from a forest fire in 1994. No changes in species richness were found at the other sites, which were at a more mature and stable state of succession and, thus less liable to recruitment of new species. The relationship between annual biomass accumulation and temperature of the growing season was positive at the coldest site and negative at the warmest site. The warming treatment tended to increase the aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) at the northern sites. The relationship between annual biomass accumulation and soil moisture during the growing season was not significant at the wettest sites, but was positive at the driest sites. The drought treatment tended to reduce the ANPP in the NL, HU, IT, and SP sites. The responses to warming were very strongly related to the Gaussen aridity index (stronger responses the lower the aridity), whereas the responses to drought were not. Changes in the annual aboveground biomass accumulation, litterfall, and, thus, the ANPP, mirrored the interannual variation in climate conditions: the most outstanding change was a decrease in biomass accumulation and an increase in litterfall at most sites during the abnormally hot year of 2003. Species richness also tended to decrease in 2003 at all sites except the cold and wet UK site. Species￢ﾀﾐspecific responses to warming were found in shoot growth: at the SP site, Globularia alypum was not affected, while the other dominant species, Erica multiflora, grew 30% more; at the UK site, Calluna vulgaris tended to grow more in the warming plots, while Empetrum nigrum tended to grow less. Drought treatment decreased plant growth in several studied species, although there were some species such as Pinus halepensis at the SP site or C. vulgaris at the UK site that were not affected. The magnitude of responses to warming and drought thus depended greatly on the differences between sites, years, and species and these multiple plant responses may be expected to have consequences at ecosystem and community level. Decreases in biodiversity and the increase in E. multiflora growth at the SP site as a response to warming challenge the assumption that sensitivity to warming may be less well developed at more southerly latitudes; likewise, the fact that one of the studied shrublands presented negative ANPP as a response to the 2003 heat wave also challenges the hypothesis that future climate warming will lead to an enhancement of plant growth and carbon sequestration in temperate ecosystems. Extreme events may thus change the general trend of increased productivity in response to warming in the colder sites.

0106 biological sciences", "Onada de calor", "arctic ecosystems", "Matorral", "drought", "Biomasa vegetal", "heathland", "global warming", "01 natural sciences", "Sequía", "Productividad primaria neta", "Forest-steppe", "Gradiente Europea", "Climate change", "Canvi climàtic", "Cambio climático", "net primary productivity", "evergreen mediterranean forest", "species richness", "litterfall", "biodiversity", "European gradient", "Plant growth", "2. P fertilization increased the biomass production and changed the species composition from a vegetation dominated by Carex panicea to a grassland community with abundant Holcus lanatus, but not before the second year. We compared the effects of conventional and organic arable farming on soil organic matter (SOM) content, soil structure, aggregate stability and C and N mineralization, which are considered important factors in defining sustainable land management. Within one soil series, three different farming systems were selected, including a conventional and an organic arable system and permanent pasture without tillage. The old pasture represents optimal conditions in terms of soil structure and organic matter inputs and is characterized by high earthworm activity. More than 70 years of different management has caused significant differences in soil properties. SOM content, mineralization, earthworm activity and water￢ﾀﾐstable aggregation decreased as a result of tillage and arable cropping when compared with pasture, but were significantly greater under organic farming than under conventional farming. Total SOM contents between 0 and 20 cm depth amounted to 15, 24 and 46 g kg￢ﾈﾒ1 for the conventional arable, organic arable and permanent pasture fields, respectively. Although less sensitive to slaking than the conventionally managed field, the soil under organic farming was susceptible to compaction when high pressures were exerted on the soil under wet conditions. The beneficial effects of organic farming are generally associated with soil biochemical properties, but soil physical aspects should also be considered. Depending on soil type and climate, organic farmers need to be careful not to destroy the soil structure, so that they can enjoy maximum advantage from their organic farming systems.

2. We observed that the main differences in the bacterial communities were not related to land-use type, but rather to soil factors. An exception was the bacterial community of pine forest soils (PFS), which was clearly different from all other sites. PFS had lowest bacterial abundance, lowest numbers of operational taxonomic units (OTUs), lowest soil pH, and highest C : N ratios. C : N ratio strongly influenced bacterial community structure and was the main factor separating PFS from other fields. For the sites other than PFS, phosphate was the most important factor explaining the differences in bacterial communities across fields. Firmicutes were the most dominant group in almost all fields, except in PFS and deciduous forest soils (DFS). In PFS, Alphaproteobacteria was most represented, while in DFS, Firmicutes and Gammaproteobacteria were both highly represented. Interestingly, Bacillii and Clostridium OTUs correlated with pH and phosphate, which might explain their high abundance across many of the Dutch soils. Pyrolysis is included in the thermochemical conversion as it can provide a valuable feedstock upgrading step prior to gasification. Slow oxidative pyrolysis can provide both high quality charcoal and heat for the drying of biomass, ideal for decentralized upgrading of biomass before shipment to a centralized conversion plant. Char combined with fast pyrolysis bio-oil can provide a high-density fuel in the form of char/bio-oil slurries. This paper reports on the preparation and characterization of the char/bio-oil as intermediate energy carrier (IBC). The char concentration was varied from 0 to 20 wt% using ground char with a particle size of <100 and 100-250 micron. The increased energy density, low ash content and the rheological properties indicated an optimal weight ratio of 10/90 char/bio-oil for application as feedstock in gasification. Initial gasification experiments of the 10/90 slurry proofed challenging on lab scale due to blockages in the feeding system. However, fluidized bed gasification of the bio-oil at 770°C proofed successful and provided a producer gas at a cold gas efficiency of 81% with 18 g/nm3 of tar at an ER of 0.3 and a H2O/C of 0.85.
0106 biological sciences", "Energy / Geological Survey Netherlands", "02 engineering and technology", "7. As the cities vary in size, so do the model domains. They have been defined with the intention to have a more or less constant ratio of urban vs. non-urban pixels (as defined in the CORINE land use map), with a maximum of 400 by 400 pixels (due to computational restraints). From this data set, the average urban heat island intensity is mapped for the summer season (JJA), which is the standard way of working in the scientific literature (e.g. Dosio, 2016). The UHI is calculated by subtracting the rural (non-water) spatial P10 temperature value from the average temperature map.

The 100 European cities for the urban simulations were selected based on user requirements within the health community.
GeoTIFF
EEA:FOLDERPATH
WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link
WWW:URL
ESRI:REST
This data set contains current and critical metal concentrations and its exceedances in topsoils, as well as data related to the current and critical metal inputs to and outputs from soils (uptake, accumulation and leaching) and the resulting exceedances of critical metal inputs.

This data set has been compiled by the European Topic Centre on Urban, Land and Soil Systems (ETC/ULS) in the context of a study on metal and nutrient dynamics where the fate and dynamics of the most abundant heavy metals and nutrients in agricultural soils were investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of agricultural intensification in Europe, and to understand its environmental impact. Metal concentrations in soils were used from two consecutive Europe-wide geochemical surveys, sampled in 1998 (FOREGS survey) and 2009 (GEMAS survey). For land use, the 2010 Eurostat data were used.

The metals included in this data set are cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). The results on the fate of Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) are included in a separate dataset. Cu and Zn are minor nutrients but at high inputs, they may cause adverse impacts on soil biodiversity, whereas Cd and Pb are toxic metals that may lead to soil degradation, by both affecting soil biodiversity and food quality. Metal budgets based on spatially explicit input and output data were calculated using the INTEGRATOR model; approximately 40,000 so-called NCUs as unique combinations of soil type, administrative region, slope class and altitude class were used. Available critical limits for food, water and soil organisms, from different existing regulations and studies, were converted to soil property-dependent critical metal concentrations (soil-based quality standards), which were then used to calculate critical metal inputs.

The results allow for the first time to identifying spatial hot spots for critical environmental impact of soil pollution for the four most abundant heavy metals. It thus informs policy processes important for planning and guiding sustainable agriculture and soil management. The work is methodologically novel, as it applies endpoint risk to thresholds in soils, and thus guides future impact studies. Updates with more recent land use and soil data are now possible.

The description of the included model results and the reference report is provided under "lineage". The data set is provided as SHP and also in a GDB, the latter including as well the N and P concentrations. An Excel file "Metadata heavy metals nutrients.xlsx" with the attribute metadata is provided with the data set.
SHP
EEA:FOLDERPATH
WWW:URL"}, "This vector dataset shows the Urban Heat Island (UHI) intensity (in degrees Celsius °C) for 100 European cities, based on their elevation above sea level, land use, soil sealing, vegetation index and anthropogenic heat flux. The Urban Heat Island intensity exacerbates high temperatures in cities and thus may pose additional risks to human thermal comfort and health.
The UHI intensity is represented by spatial P90 (90th percentile) urban heat island intensity of a given city ("P90" field in the dataset). This indicator is calculated by subtracting the rural (non-water) spatial P10 (10th percentile) temperature value from the average, height-corrected (to exclude terrain effects), air temperature map. This indicator represents the specific exposure of single cities and due to the height correction will be comparable across Europe.
The dataset has been created by VITO within the Copernicus Health contract for C3S and is based on UrbClim model (De Ridder et al. 2015). The 100 European cities for the urban simulations were selected based on user requirements within the health community.
SHP
EEA:FOLDERPATH
WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link
WWW:URL
OGC:WMS
ESRI:REST
Atmospheric conditions", "Meteorological geographical features", "climate", "climate change impact", "urban environment", " urban stress", "climate change adaptation", "urban area", "Norway", "Finland", "Germany", "Lithuania", "Spain", "Austria", "Croatia", "Belgium", "Ireland", "Romania", "Albania", "Switzerland", "France", "Italy", "Montenegro", "Poland", "Denmark", "Serbia", "United Kingdom", "Portugal", "Luxembourg", "Netherlands", "Slovenia", "North Macedonia", "Sweden", "Bosnia and Herzegovina", "Slovakia", "Hungary", "Czechia", "Iceland", "Latvia", "Bulgaria", "Greece", "Estonia", "European", "Climate adaptation
["custodian
["Kongens Nytorv 6
https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/webdav/datastore/public/eea_v_4326_100_k_uhi-intensity_p_2008-2017_v01_r00/
EEA:FOLDERPATH
download
https://climate.discomap.eea.europa.eu/arcgis/services/UAMV/Urban_Heat_Island_Intensity/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS
OGC:WMS
information
https://climate.discomap.eea.europa.eu/arcgis/rest/services/UAMV/Urban_Heat_Island_Intensity/MapServer
ESRI:REST
information
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/8b6a3182-0889-4109-ad22-a021e3126b60"},
["2008-01-01T00:00:00Z", "2017-12-31T00:00:00Z"]}},
[[[3.31, 50.8], [3.31, 53.51], [7.09, 53.51], [7.09, 50.8], [3.31, 50.8
https://basisregistratieondergrond.nl/inhoud-bro/registratieobjecten/bodem-grondonderzoek/booronderzoek-bhr/bodemkundig-booronderzoek-bhr/
Basisregistratie Ondergrond - We collected basic data on agricultural structure and farm management, including biodiversity innovations and other practices promoting biodiversity, the awareness and knowledge of farmers on the relevance of biodiversity for their economic and ecological performance and perceptions to achieve biodiversity targets based on stated preferences. The relevant sections of the survey cover farmers’ willingness to: 1) implement biodiversity measures, such as flower strips, hedgerows or extensive grassland management, asking for their motivation, necessary conditions, knowledge, importance of biodiversity outcomes and environmental effectiveness, but also the perceived risks they have; 2) participate agri-environmental schemes to foster biodiversity, including aspects such as biodiversity labelling, spatial connection bonus, advice/information or support through cooperation along the value chain through food hubs; and 3) participate in a new biodiversity business model based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Furthermore, the survey encompasses a spatial experiment on where farmers would place biodiversity measures (hedgerows and flower strips) in the field, accounting for influencing factors such as slope, soil quality, wind, proximity to streets, forest or pre-existing hedgerows. The survey was conducted online, and supplemented by hard copy questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, and workshops where online contacts to farmers could not be established easily.
