However, the lack of knowledge on suitable legume species is often identified as the main bottleneck for the successful application of legume living mulches. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of 12 different legumes for relay intercropping with wheat in two contrasting Mediterranean cereal-based cropping systems respectively characterized by low-input and integrated management. Each legume was monitored from the undersowing in wheat until the following spring and we compared direct drilling to broadcast sowing of legumes. None of the undersown legumes showed a negative effect on the wheat grain yield. Relay intercropping of legumes proved to be an effective solution to control weeds before and after the wheat harvest, provided suitable legumes species are chosen. Suitable legumes reduced the weed biomass up to the 90% during the intercropping and up to 94% in the following spring. On the contrary, legumes such as Trifoliumresupinatum, Viciavillosa, Medicagotruncatula, and Medicagoscutellata boosted weed growth in the following spring in comparison with the control. According to the performance of legumes, Medicagosativa, Trifoliumrepens and Medicagolupulina had the most suitable characteristics for relay intercropping with durum wheat at the Ravenna site, in a highly productive region whereas Medicagosativa, Hedysarumcoronarium and Trifoliumsubterraneum performed better in the low-input system near Pisa, where yields are generally lower. This is the first time that such a diversity in legumes species is tested in the same experiment for relay intercropping under diversified environmental and management conditions. The results of this study can support farmers in selecting the most appropriated legume species for their specific cropping systems and local conditions.</p>", "keywords": ["0106 biological sciences", "2. Parmi ces param\u00e8tres, le carbone organique des sols, qui constitue plus de 50% de la masse de la mati\u00e8re organique du sol, est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l'indicateur principal de la qualit\u00e9 des sols, \u00e0 la fois pour ses fonctions agricoles et environnementales.\n\nLa pr\u00e9sente couche de donn\u00e9es constitue la cartographie des teneurs en carbone organique total (COT) pour les sols sous cultures et prairies permanentes en R\u00e9gion wallonne pour une p\u00e9riode comprise entre 2004 et 2014. La couche a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e par m\u00e9thode de mod\u00e9lisation spatiale d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e par l'UCL dans le cadre de la convention CARBIOSOL.\n\nPour plus de d\u00e9tails sur la constitution des couches cartographiques g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es dans le cadre du projet CARBIOSOL, veuillez-vous r\u00e9f\u00e9rer \u00e0 la fiche de m\u00e9tadonn\u00e9es documentant la s\u00e9rie de couches de donn\u00e9es.\n\nEn chaque pixel, la teneur en carbone organique total (COT) est exprim\u00e9e en gramme de carbone par kilogramme de terre fine s\u00e8che (gC/kg). Le r\u00e9sultat en sortie du mod\u00e8le est une couche raster des teneurs en COT \u00e0 90 m\u00e8tres de r\u00e9solution et spatialement continue sur le territoire agricole wallon.\n\nLes teneurs moyennes en COT observ\u00e9es pour les sols (horizons de surface) sous cultures et prairies permanentes sur la p\u00e9riode 2004-2014 \u00e9taient de 1.30 gC/kg et 3.61 gC/kg respectivement, d\u2019apr\u00e8s la base de donn\u00e9es REQUASUD.\n\nSur cette m\u00eame p\u00e9riode, 22 % des superficies sous cultures pr\u00e9sentaient des teneurs en COT < 1.15 gC kg-1 et 73 % pr\u00e9sentaient des teneurs < 1.5 gC/kg. Ce mod\u00e8le a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 pour chaque type d'occupation du sol d'int\u00e9r\u00eat (cultures et prairies permanentes). \n\nPour chaque occupation du sol, un Mod\u00e8le Additif G\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9 (GAM pour Generalised Additive Model) a \u00e9t\u00e9 ajust\u00e9 sur un jeu de calibration contenant deux tiers des points d'observation concern\u00e9s. La carte transmise \u00e0 la FAO estime sur une grille de 1 km de r\u00e9solution les stocks de carbone sur 30 cm. Elle fournit des indications pr\u00e9cieuses quant \u00e0 la distribution spatiale et la variabilit\u00e9 des stocks de carbone dans les sols fran\u00e7ais, avec toutefois des zones o\u00f9 les estimations pr\u00e9sentent de forts niveaux d\u2019incertitude, notamment en r\u00e9gion montagneuse. Ce travail confirme les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes publications nationales puisque les stocks les plus faibles sont observ\u00e9s en Languedoc-Roussillon (r\u00e9gion fortement viticole et caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par un climat chaud et des sols peu \u00e9pais) et dans quelques zones de culture tr\u00e8s intensive (Beauce Chartraine, Nord). Les stocks de carbone faibles \u00e0 moyens (40-50 t/ha) sont caract\u00e9ristiques des sols des grandes plaines de culture intensive de France ainsi que des sols limoneux comme, par exemple, le grand Bassin parisien, une partie du Bassin aquitain, le Toulousain et le sillon Rhodanien. A pulse of bacteria (1\u00a0\u00d7\u00a0108 CFU mL-1) and bromide (10\u00a0mmol\u00a0L-1) moved through the columns under saturated flow (0\u00a0cm) for four pore volumes. A second bacteria and bromide pulse was then poured on the column surfaces and leaching was extended six more pore volumes. In dry wettable sand attachment dominated E. coli retention, whereas R. erythropolis was dominated by straining. Once wetted, the dominant retention mechanisms flipped between these bacteria. Attachment by either bacteria decreased markedly in water-repellent sand, so straining was the main retention mechanism. We explain this from capillary potential energy, which enhanced straining under the formation of water films at very early times (i.e., imbibing) and film thinning at much later times (i.e., draining). However, there is a lack of knowledge on how climate change could influence the potential for producing protein-rich crops. This study addresses this knowledge gap for the European Union. We analysed 13 protein-rich crops, using the crop suitability model EcoCrop and climate projections for the 2050s, based on 30 Global Circulation Models, under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5. The results suggest that current protein-rich crop distributions reflect climatic suitability. We demonstrate the heterogeneous impacts of climate change on crop suitability. In general, conditions in northern Europe were modelled to become more favourable for protein-rich crops, while in southern Europe modelled future climates limit the production of traditional protein-rich crops commonly grown there, including chickpea and lentil. Model results show an expanded area of high suitability for quinoa. Our results confirm the need for concerted breeding and research planning strategies to improve the tolerance of faba bean, lentil, and chickpea to the abiotic stresses that are predicted to become more common with climate change. At the same time, production in northern Europe can benefit from experimentation with protein-rich crops predicted to become more suitable there. Production planning and agricultural policy should consider these likely impacts, to encourage shifts that follow the emerging geographic patterns of crop suitability, and to support the resilience of protein-rich crop production in regions that may be negatively impacted by climate change.", "keywords": ["2. The developed analytical framework is exploited to discuss the dynamic response of a single building, evaluating the variation of its amplitude with respect to the characteristic site frequencies. The dynamics of two buildings are then studied by modelling their coupled response. In particular, the interaction between them is investigated as a function of the buildings spacing, mass, and relative stiffness. Finally, the analysis is extended to the coupled response of a cluster of five buildings. Two potentiostatic conditions, -350 and -550 mV vs SHE, were tested on the reductive reactor, which showed the capability to completely reduce the PCE into vinyl chloride (VC) and ethylene (Eth). These compounds were completely removed by the oxidative reactor with an average VC and Eth removal efficiency of 94 \u00b1 1% and 98 \u00b1 1%. This study examines the effect of anthropogenic water pollution on microbial community diversity, the resistome, and ARG dissemination. We analyzed intracellular and extracellular DNA from wastewater treatment plant effluents and lake surface water by shotgun sequencing. We also conducted experiments to evaluate anthropogenic pollution's effect on transforming extracellular DNA (using Gfp-plasmids carrying ARGs) within a natural microbial community. Chemical analysis showed treated wastewater had higher anthropogenic pollution-related parameters than lake water. The richness of microbial community, antimicrobial resistome, and high-risk ARGs was greater in treated wastewaters than in lake waters both for intracellular and extracellular DNA. Except for the high-risk ARGs, richness was significantly higher in intracellular than in extracellular DNA. Several ARGs were associated with mobile genetic elements and located on plasmids. Furthermore, Gfp-plasmid transformation within a natural microbial community was enhanced by anthropogenic pollution levels. Our findings underscore anthropogenic pollution's pivotal role in shaping microbial communities and their antimicrobial resistome. To this end, we analyzed the levels of seven ARGs (sul1, blaTEM, blaCTX-M-32, mecA, qnrS1, tetM, blaOXA-58), plus the integrase gene intl1, in soils, roots, leaves, and fruits from two commercial tomato fields irrigated with either unpolluted groundwater or from a channel impacted by treated wastewater, using culture-independent, quantitative real-time PCR methods. ARGs and intl1 sequences were found in leaves and fruits at levels representing from 1 to 10% of those found in roots or soil. The relative abundance of intl1 sequences correlated with tetM, blaTEM, and sul1 levels, suggesting a high horizontal mobility potential for these ARGs. High-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing revealed microbiome differences both between sample types (soil plus roots versus leaves plus fruits) and sampling zones, and a correlation between the prevalence of Pseudomonadaceae and the levels of different ARGs, particularly in fruits and leaves. An optimal organic scenario that supports widespread cover cropping and enhanced residue recycling will reduce global soil carbon input by 31%, and SOC can be preserved after 20 yr following conversion to organic farming. The Bocage in the western part of Europe is an ancient rural landscape characterized by a network of hedgerows. The system studied here consists of hedges growing on earth and stone banks, which are found in the Armorican Massif (western France). Seven sites were analysed, which represented a large, but not complete, set of situations. We investigated the influence of hedges parallel to contour lines on soil characteristics, soil profile morphology and carbon storage at the hillslope scale. The analysis is based on a morphological description of the soil catena from the top of the hill to downslope of the hedge, and on measurements of bulk density and organic carbon in different soil profiles on the slopes. The results show that thickness of the organic horizon increases slowly from the top of the hill as far as the hedge, whereas under the hedge the bulk density is low and the soil organic carbon (SOC) storage large. Two effects of the hedges on SOC storage are apparent, namely, a local effect under the hedge, due to tree activity, and an anti\uffe2\uff80\uff90erosive effect at the hillslope scale. The water is extracted from 29 vertical wells that are located at a distance of 60\uffe2\uff80\uff9380 m from the channel of the River Warta and from a horizontal well with radial drains located 5 m below the bottom of the river. The results of a two-year water-quality investigation indicate that the water quality in both types of abstraction system is influenced by the quality of river water. The water quality observed in the horizontal well is closely similar to that of the river water, with similar concentrations of sulphates, nitrates and micropollutants, but a reduction in bacteriological contamination and plankton is clearly seen. The reduction in contaminants is mainly the result of physical processes, such as mechanical entrapment of suspended material and colloids as well as bacteria and plankton. In the vertical wells, the influence of contamination from river water is also visible, but the reduction in contamination is more significant, especially in cases of bacteria, plankton, micropollutants and nitrates, and is determined by both physical and chemical processes, such as sorption, dissolution, red-ox processes and denitrification. The present research shows that river water treatment is more effective in the case of vertical wells. N-oxides, including NO, could globally accumulate via lightning synthesis in the early anoxic ocean and constitute pools for the evolution of denitrification, considered an early step of the biological nitrogen cycle. Interestingly, a common evolution may be proposed for components of denitrification and aerobic respiration pathways, namely for NO and oxygen reductases, a theory compatible with the presence of low amounts of oxygen before the great oxygenation event (GOE), which was generated by Cyanobacteria. During GOE, the increase in oxygen caused the decrease of Earth's temperature and the consequent increase of oxygen dissolution and availability, making aerobic respiration an increasingly dominant trait of the expanding mesophilic lifestyle. Horizontal gene transfer was certainly important in the joint expansion of mesophily and aerobic respiration. First denitrification steps lead to NO formation through nitrite reductase activity, and NO may further accumulate when oxygen binds NO reductase, resulting in denitrification blockage. The consequent transient NO surplus in an oxic niche could have been a key factor for a successful outcome of an early denitrifying prokaryote able to scavenge oxygen by NO/oxygen reductase or by an independent heterotrophic aerobic respiration pathway.
