R. Karsten and H. L. Drake, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 63:1878\uffe2\uff80\uff931882, 1997). In contrast, commercially obtainedLumbricus terrestrisdid not emit N2O; however, such worms emitted N2O when they were fed (i.e., preincubated in) garden soils.A. caliginosa,L. rubellus, andO. lacteumsubstantially increased the rates of N2O emission of garden soil columns and microcosms. Extrapolation of the data to in situ conditions indicated that N2O emission by earthworms accounted for approximately 33% of the N2O emitted by garden soils. In vivo emission of N2O by earthworms obtained from both garden and forest soils was greatly stimulated when worms were moistened with sterile solutions of nitrate or nitrite; in contrast, ammonium did not stimulate in vivo emission of N2O. In the presence of nitrate, acetylene increased the N2O emission rates of earthworms; in contrast, in the presence of nitrite, acetylene had little or no effect on emission of N2O. In vivo emission of N2O decreased by 80% when earthworms were preincubated in soil supplemented with streptomycin and tetracycline. On a fresh weight basis, the rates of N2O emission of dissected earthworm gut sections were substantially higher than the rates of N2O emission of dissected worms lacking gut sections, indicating that N2O production occurred in the gut rather than on the worm surface. In contrast to living earthworms and gut sections that produced N2O under oxic conditions (i.e., in the presence of air), fresh casts (feces) from N2O-emitting earthworms produced N2O only under anoxic conditions. Collectively, these results indicate that gut-associated denitrifying bacteria are responsible for the in vivo emission of N2O by earthworms and contribute to the N2O that is emitted from certain terrestrial ecosystems.</p>", "keywords": ["2. Sequence and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of             nifH             and             amoA             PCR amplicons was performed on DNA samples from unburned, moderately burned, and severely burned soils of a mixed conifer forest. PCR results indicated that the soil biomass and proportion of nitrogen-fixing and ammonia-oxidizing species was less in soil from the fire-impacted sites than from the unburned sites. The number of dominant             nifH             sequence types was greater in fire-impacted soils, and             nifH             sequences that were most closely related to those from the spore-forming taxa             Clostridium             and             Paenibacillus             were more abundant in the burned soils. In T-RFLP patterns of the ammonia-oxidizing community, terminal restriction fragments (TRFs) representing             amoA             cluster 1, 2, or 4             Nitrosospira             spp. were dominant (80 to 90%) in unburned soils, while TRFs representing             amoA             cluster 3A             Nitrosospira             spp. dominated (65 to 95%) in fire-impacted soils. The dominance of             amoA             cluster 3A             Nitrosospira             spp. sequence types was positively correlated with soil pH (5.6 to 7.5) and NH             3             -N levels (0.002 to 0.976 ppm), both of which were higher in burned soils. We describe a flexible workflow to generate and annotate high-quality, full-length 16S rDNA amplicons. We evaluated it for two applications, namely, (i) identification of bacterial isolates and (ii) species-level profiling of microbial communities. We assessed the identification of single bacterial isolates by sequencing, using a set of barcoded full-length 16S rRNA gene primer pairs (pair A), on 47 isolates encompassing multiple genera and compared those results with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS)-based identification. Species-level community profiling was tested with two sets of barcoded full-length 16S primer pairs (A and B) and compared to the results obtained with shotgun Illumina sequencing using 27 stool samples. We developed a Nextflow pipeline to retain high-quality reads and taxonomically annotate them. We found high agreement between our workflow and MALDI-TOF data for isolate identification (positive predictive value = 0.90, Cram\uffc3\uffa9r\uffe2\uff80\uff99s               V               = 0.857, and Theil\uffe2\uff80\uff99s               U               = 0.316). For species-level community profiling, we found strong correlations (               r                                s                              &gt; 0.6) of alpha diversity indices between the two primer sets and Illumina sequencing. At the community level, we found significant but small differences when comparing sequencing techniques. Finally, we found a moderate to strong correlation when comparing the relative abundances of individual species (average               r                                s                              = 0.6 and 0.533 for primers A and B). Despite identified shortcomings, the proposed workflow enabled accurate identification of single bacterial isolates and prominent features in microbial communities, making it a worthwhile alternative to MALDI-TOF MS and Illumina sequencing.             </p>                            IMPORTANCE               <p>A quick, robust, simple, and cost-effective method to identify bacterial isolates and communities in each sample is indispensable in the fields of microbiology and infection biology. Recent technological advances in Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing make this technique an attractive option considering the adaptability, portability, and cost-effectiveness of the platform, even with small sequencing batches. Here, we validated a flexible workflow to identify bacterial isolates and characterize bacterial communities using the Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing platform combined with the most recent v14 chemistry kits. For bacterial isolates, we compared our nanopore-based approach to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry-based identification. For species-level profiling of complex bacterial communities, we compared our nanopore-based approach to Illumina shotgun sequencing. Biogeographic responses to geological phenomena including plate tectonics, as well as to past and present climate and habitat distributions, are the main factors determining the present distribution of earthworm families. A total of ca. 5,738 species/subspecies (5,406 species and 332 unique subspecies; i.e., not counting the nomino-typical subspecies) belonging to 23 families (including one non-crassiclitellate family: Moniligastridae) are currently recognized worldwide, of which three families (Tritogeniidae and Kazimierzidae from Southern Africa and Arecoidae, a new family from Brazil described herein), 35 genera and close to 1200 new taxa (including subspecies) were described in the 21st century. Nonetheless, the large number of still undescribed species will likely increase this value to well over 8,000 species. Ten families are monospecific and/or monogeneric and have a mostly restricted distribution. On the other hand, more than 87 widespread cosmopolitan species have been catalogued, some of them with important invasive potential, belonging mainly to families Lumbricidae, Acanthodrilidae, Benhamiidae, Megascolecidae, Rhinodrilidae and Ocnerodrilidae. Soil properties and the activities of four enzymes involved in carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling were measured in both bulk soil and microaggregate, and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) were measured in bulk soil. The experiment started on April 26, 1965, when plants were sown on the plot. The topsoil (0\u201320 cm) samples were analyzed in 1966, 2000, 2007, and 2014. The study indicated that perennial grasses (meadow fescue and common meadow-grass) fertilized with P40K75, compared to N150P40K75, decreased the WSA content, as well at the accumulation rate of soil organic carbon (SOC) and the total nitrogen content (Ntot). The hybrid alfalfa treatment resulted in the significantly highest SOC and Ntot accumulation, but not in the overall highest WSA content. Under barley, manure positively affected the WSA and SOC, though many other physical properties were not improved. Compared to the initial till under bare fallow, the SOC and Ntot contents were significantly higher under grown crops, but the WSA content remained the same. In addition, regardless of the grown crops, the WSA of larger (0.25\u20132 mm) aggregates was substantially higher than that of smaller (0.25\u20131 mm) aggregates. Also, as the relationship between WSA and SOC in the study was linear, the soil was far from C saturation and still in development. This review presents an overview of the sensor monitoring options for the most relevant parameters of importance for meat cultivation. To evaluate the impact of N and (or) S deposition on soil microbial community functions, we conducted a simulated N and S deposition experiment in a boreal mixedwood forest with the following four treatments: control (CK), N addition (+N, 30 kg N\uffc2\uffb7ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921 as NH4NO3), S addition (+S, 30 kg S\uffc2\uffb7ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921 as NaSO4), and N plus S addition (+NS, 30 kg N\uffc2\uffb7ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921 + 30 kg S\uffc2\uffb7ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921), from 2006 to 2010. Nitrogen and (or) S deposition did not change soil organic carbon, total N, dissolved organic C and N, or soil microbial biomass C and N. Soil microbial community-level physiological profiles, however, were strongly affected by 5 years of N and (or) S addition. Soil \uffce\uffb2-glucosidase activity in the +NS treatment was greater than that in the +S treatment, and S addition decreased soil arylsulfatase; however, urease and dehydrogenase activities were not affected by the simulated N and (or) S deposition. Our data suggested that N and (or) S deposition strongly affected soil microbial community functions and enzymatic activities without changing soil microbial biomass in the studied boreal forest. </p>", "keywords": ["2. We carried out a fully factorial laboratory experiment with the factors presence of microplastic fibers (0.4% w/w) and addition of urea fertilizer (100\uffe2\uff80\uff89mg\uffe2\uff80\uff89N\uffe2\uff80\uff89kg\uffe2\uff88\uff92\uffe2\uff80\uff891) using one target soil. The conditions in an intensively N-fertilized arable soil were simulated by adding biogas digestate at the beginning of the incubation to all samples. We continuously monitored CO2 and N2O emissions from soil before and after urea application using a custom-built flow-through steady-state system, and we assessed soil properties, including soil structure. Microplastics affected soil properties, notably increasing soil aggregate water-stability and pneumatic conductivity, and caused changes in the dynamics and overall level of emission of both gases, but in opposite directions: overall fluxes of CO2 were increased by microplastic presence, whereas N2O emission were decreased, a pattern that was intensified following urea addition. This divergent response is explained by effects of microplastic on soil structure, with the increased air permeability likely improving O2 supply: this will have stimulated CO2 production, since mineralization benefits from better aeration. Increased O2 would at the same time have inhibited denitrification, a process contributing to N2O emissions, thus likely explaining the decrease in the latter. To date there have been limited, standardized pipelines for analyzing the nifH functional gene, which is in stark contrast to the 16S rRNA gene. Here we present a bioinformatics pipeline for processing nifH amplicon datasets - NifMAP ('NifH MiSeq Illumina Amplicon Analysis Pipeline'), which as a novel aspect uses Hidden-Markov Models to filter out homologous genes to nifH. By using this pipeline, we evaluated the broadly inclusive primer pairs (Ueda19F-R6, IGK3-DVV, and F2-R6) that target the nifH gene. To evaluate any systematic biases, the nifH gene was amplified with the aforementioned primer pairs in a diverse collection of environmental samples (soils, rhizosphere and roots samples, biological soil crusts and estuarine samples), in addition to a nifH mock community consisting of six phylogenetically diverse members. We noted that all primer pairs co-amplified nifH homologs to varying degrees; up to 90% of the amplicons were nifH homologs with IGK3-DVV in some samples (rhizosphere and roots from tall oat-grass). In regards to specificity, we observed some degree of bias across the primer pairs. For example, primer pair F2-R6 discriminated against cyanobacteria (amongst others), yet captured many sequences from subclusters IIIE and IIIL-N. These aforementioned subclusters were largely missing by the primer pair IGK3-DVV, which also tended to discriminate against Alphaproteobacteria, but amplified sequences within clusters IIIC (affiliated with Clostridia) and clusters IVB and IVC. GM crops in three subsequent crops. Soil microbial biomass C (MBC), \uffce\uffb2-glucosidase enzyme activity, and bacterial physiological (C substrate utilization) diversity were measured in the summer (rhizosphere and bulk soil) and fall (bulk soil) in all subsequent crops: wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), canola (Brassica napus L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Residues of faba bean (grown for GM, herein called faba GM, or for seed, herein called faba bean) usually resulted in the most soil MBC and \uffce\uffb2-glucosidase activity relative to the other residues. Faba and vetch GM residues increased bulk soil MBC or \uffce\uffb2-glucosidase enzyme activity more than pulse crop residues in the first and (or) third subsequent crops. Considering drugs approved for an NTD by at least one stringent regulatory authority: fexinidazole, included in WHO guidelines for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense African trypanosomiasis, is in development for Chagas disease. Moxidectin, registered in 2018 for treatment of individuals\uffe2\uff80\uff89\uffe2\uff89\uffa5\uffe2\uff80\uff8912\uffc2\uffa0years old with onchocerciasis, is undergoing studies to extend the indication to 4\uffe2\uff80\uff9311-year-old children and obtain additional data to inform WHO and endemic countries' decisions on moxidectin inclusion in guidelines and policies. Moxidectin is also being evaluated for other NTDs. Considering drugs in at least Phase 2 clinical development, a submission is being prepared for registration of acoziborole as an oral treatment for first and second stage T.b. gambiense African trypanosomiasis. Bedaquiline, registered for tuberculosis, is being evaluated for multibacillary leprosy. Phase 2 studies of emodepside and flubentylosin in O. volvulus-infected individuals are ongoing; studies for Trichuris trichuria and hookworm are planned. A trial of fosravuconazole in Madurella mycetomatis-infected patients is ongoing. JNJ-64281802 is undergoing Phase 2 trials for reducing dengue viral load. Studies are ongoing or planned to evaluate oxantel pamoate for onchocerciasis and soil-transmitted helminths, including Trichuris, and oxfendazole for onchocerciasis, Fasciola hepatica, Taenia solium cysticercosis, Echinococcus granulosus and soil-transmitted helminths, including Trichuris. Additional steps from first registration to effective use for NTD control and elimination include country registrations, possibly additional studies to inform WHO guidelines and country policies, and implementation research to address barriers to effective use of new drugs. Relative to the number of people suffering from NTDs, the pipeline is small. To conduct the literature search, a search strategy was produced to define the scope of the systematic map and to allow reproducibility of the approach. A list of published and unpublished sources of literature were selected and a preliminary trial identified best-fit-for-purpose search-terms and -strings. A literature screening process was set with consistency checks amongst reviewers at the title, abstract and full text screening stages. A series of eligibility criteria were defined to ensure objectivity and consistency in the selection of studies that are best suited to address the research question of the systematic map. In addition, a coding strategy was designed to set the means for meta-data extraction out from the literature for review. A drafted structured questionnaire will serve as the base for collating the meta-data to produce a database where variables will be queried for the evidence synthesis. F10 showed strong linear relationships with detrital production in harvested plots, with total near-surface carbon in all plots, and was positively correlated with understory cover. Soil organic C was reduced by thinning, either alone or with prescribed fire, and this effect persisted through the fourth post-treatment year. Fire also resulted in reduced soil organic C, but not until several years after treatment. Soil C/N ratio initially increased after fire, either alone or with thinning, but this difference did not persist. The activities of three soil enzymes (acid phosphatase, chitinase, and phenol oxidase) in the upper mineral soil were quantified as measures of microbial activity. During the fourth post-treatment year we observed significant stimulation of all three enzyme systems as a result of thinning or thinning and burning. Although the patterns of variation in acid phosphatase and chitinase activity among treatments were similar during the first and fourth post-treatment years, the first-year treatment effects were not statistically significant. Nutrient weights (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) in the trees were greatest in aspen followed generally by spruce, red pine, and jack pine. Particularly large proportions of biomass and nutrients were found in aspen bark and spruce foliage and branches. Understory biomass contributed less than 1.2% of the total organic matter in the vegetation\uffe2\uff80\uff93soil complex but contributed up to 5.0% of the nutrients. Exchangeable Ca in the surface soil was much lower under aspen and spruce than under the pines. No significant soil differences between species were detected below 36\uffe2\uff80\uff82cm. Further, the environmental impact of the wholeJatropha curcasbiodiesel value chain is benchmarked with fossil diesel, following the ISO 14040/44 life cycle assessment procedure. Overall, this study shows that the use ofJatropha curcasbiodiesel generally reduces the global warming potential and the nonrenewable energy demand as compared to fossil diesel. New techniques have been developed to induce artificial biocrusts formation as a tool for restoration of degraded drylands, and among them soils inoculation with cyanobacteria adapted to environmental stress. Improvement of soil properties by cyanobacteria inoculation is largely related to their ability to synthesize exopolysaccharides (EPS). However, cyanobacterial EPS features [amount, molecular weight (MW), composition] can change from one species to another or when grown in different conditions. We investigated the differences in growth and polysaccharidic matrix features among three common biocrust-forming cyanobacteria (Nostoc commune, Scytonema javanicum, and Phormidium ambiguum), when grown in liquid media and on sandy soil microcosms under optimal nutrient and water, in controlled laboratory conditions. We extracted and analyzed the released EPS (RPS) and sheath for the liquid cultures, and the more soluble or loosely-bound (LB) and the more condensed or tightly-bound (TB) soil EPS fractions for the sandy soil microcosms. In liquid culture, P. ambiguum showed the greatest growth and EPS release. In contrast, on the sandy soil, S. javanicum showed the highest growth and highest LB-EPS content. N. commune showed no relevant growth after its inoculation of the sandy soil. A difference was observed in terms of MW distribution, showing that the higher MW of the polymers produced by P. ambiguum and S. javanicum compared to the polymers produced by N. commune, could have had a positive effect on growth for the first two organisms when inoculated on the sandy soil. We also observed how both RPS and sheath fractions reflected in the composition of the soil TB-EPS fraction, indicating the role in soil stabilization of both the released and the cell attached EPS. Our results indicate that the features of the polysaccharidic matrix produced by different cyanobacteria can influence their growth success in soil. The study targeted two main and dominant encroaching bush species in Borana rangeland, Acacia drepanolobium and Acacia mellifera, and their effects on some vegetation attributes and tick population dynamics. A hectare of rangeland encroached by these two acacia species was replicated/divided into three plots, and each plot was subdivided into five sub-plots to receive five treatments: cutting at 0.5 m above ground and pouring kerosene on stumps (T1), cutting at 0.5 m above ground and debarking the stumps down into the soil surface (T2), cutting at 0.5 m above ground alone (T3), cutting at 0.5 m above ground and dissecting the stumps (T4) and control (T5). Data on basal and litter covers, soil erosion and compaction, dead and re-sprouted encroaching tree/shrub species and nymph- and adult-stage tick populations were collected before and after treatment applications. The applied treatments significantly influenced (p < 0.05) basal cover, nymph- and adult-stage tick population and the two encroaching tree species. The results of this study showed that T3 and T2 were good in controlling A. drepanolobium in that order. T4 and T2 had a significant effect in controlling A. mellifera in their order. Controlling bush encroachment had also a positive effect in eradicating the tick population. The most dominant grass and non-grass species observed after the control actions were Cenchrus ciliaris, Chrysopogon aucheri, Abutilon hirtum, Pennisetum mezianum, Dyschoriste hildebrandtii, Zaleya pentandra and Eragrostis papposa. Therefore, controlling encroaching tree/shrub species had created a conducive grazing area with palatable herbaceous species for the livestock and unequivocally reduced tick population which play a role in reducing cattle milk production through closing off teats. Silvicultural interventions can alter litter production and decay rates, thereby varying nutrient fluxes. We evaluated the effect of various thinning densities on litter dynamics of 9-year-old Acacia mangium Willd. stands. To quantify litterfall, we placed traps at four random grid points in 24 plots in which none, one-third, one-half, or two-thirds of stems had been removed. In each plot, 48 litterbags were also placed to evaluate litter decay. Annual litterfall ranged from 5.73 (two-thirds thinning) to 11.18\uffc2\uffa0Mg\uffc2\uffb7ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921(unthinned) and showed a significant linear relationship to basal area (p\uffc2\uffa0&lt; 0.0001). Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) concentrations were highest during the wet season, when litterfall production was low, implying an inverse relationship between litterfall quality and quantity. Using a litter removal method, we researched RL and the ratio of RL:RS in a 20-year-old exotic slash pine ( Pinus elliottii Englem.) plantation in subtropical China. Soil temperature explained 67%, 78%, and 25% of variation in RS, mineral soil respiration (RS-L), and RL, respectively, but had little impact on RL:RS. To study influences besides temperature, measured RS and RS-L were normalized using the Arrhenius equation. Even though this subtropical plantation was characterized by a humid climate with abundant precipitation, a rainfall pulse induced increase in soil moisture primarily drove RL and its contribution to RS but depressed RS-L. The response of RL to rainfall and soil moisture was significantly more sensitive than that of RS-L. Furthermore, the effects of rainfall and soil moisture on RS, RL, and RL:RS were higher during the dry season (July\uffe2\uff80\uff93December) than during the wet season (January\uffe2\uff80\uff93June). Soil samples (Typic Fragiudalf) were collected from southeastern Missouri where a long-term burning experiment was established in 1949. Treatments consisted of (1) annual burning; (2) periodic burning, every 4 years; and (3) control, unburned. Soil samples (0\uffe2\uff80\uff9315\uffe2\uff80\uff82cm) were collected before and after annual and periodic burning during 1992 and seasonally in 1993. Long-term burning treatments significantly reduced the activities of enzymes studied but did not affect the pH and organic C. The microbial biomass C, total N, available P, and available S content of soil samples from both annual and periodic burning plots were significantly reduced. A significant positive correlation between soil enzyme activities and the microbial biomass was established. Don. Data from these samples enabled us to estimate monthly standing crops of live and dead fine roots and seasonal rates of fine-root decomposition. We used a compartment-flow model to estimate production and mortality of fine roots with monthly resolution from these data. The general pattern of production and mortality was modal and out of phase with soil temperature. On an area basis, thinning reduced the overall standing crop of live fine roots from 1.38 to 0.55\uffe2\uff80\uff82Mg/ha; the standing crop of dead fine roots remained unchanged at 4.37\uffe2\uff80\uff82Mg/ha. The standing crop of live small roots declined from 1.03 to 0.54\uffe2\uff80\uff82Mg/ha. Don plantation, on a sandy Podzol in southeastern Australia. Slash, litter, and the top 30\uffe2\uff80\uff82cm of soil combined contained 1957\uffe2\uff80\uff82kg N\uffe2\uff80\uffa2ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921, of which slash and litter contained 12 and 25%, respectively. Therefore, loss of slash and litter due to burning or other intensive site preparation practices would substantially reduce the N capital at the site. During the first 18 months after clear-felling, soil water content in the clear-felled area was up to 50% higher than in the uncut plantation, but there were only minor differences in soil temperature. Slash removal decreased the water content of litter, but had little effect on the water content or temperature of the soil. In the uncut plantation, N mineralized in litter and soil was completely taken up by the trees. Following clear-felling, rates of N mineralization increased in litter after 4 months, and in soil after 12 months, but changes were less pronounced with slash removal. After clear-felling, increased mineralization and the absence of trees (no uptake) led to increased concentrations of mineral N in both litter and soil, 64\uffe2\uff80\uff9376% of which was leached below the 30\uffe2\uff80\uff82cm soil depth prior to replanting. The purpose of this work was the study of the viability of the introduction of new non food crops in marginal areas of real farms. This study compares the profit margin and the energy and environmental performance of growing tall wheatgrass, in the marginal area of a rainfed farm versus rye, the annual crop sowed traditionally in the marginal area of the farm. The cited farm owned 300 ha of which about 13 percent was marginal. The methodology was based on the use of the profit margin of the crops as indicator for the economic assessment and Life Cycle Assessment LCA as technique for the energy and the environmental evaluations. Results of the economic analysis showed a slight enhancement of the profit margin for tall wheatgrass 156 Euro ha-1 y-1 compared to rye 145 Euro ha-1 y-1. Environmental LCA was driven by CO2 fixation due to soil organic matter increase and reduced inputs consumption for tall wheatgrass that produced a Global Warming Potential GWP of -1.9 Mg CO2 eq ha-1 y-1 versus 1.6 Mg CO2 eq ha-1 y-1 obtained for rye. Tall wheatgrass cultivation primary energy consumption was less than 40 percent of rye s consumption. According to the results achieved it was concluded that tall wheatgrass is better option than rye from the energy and the environmental point of views and slight better option from the economic view. In this work, several innovative methods (satellite remote sensing, field spectroscopy, soil chemical analysis, and GIS) were investigated for their potential in monitoring SOM, CaCO3, and soil erodibility (K-factor) of the Akrotiri cape in Crete, Greece. Laboratory analysis and soil spectral reflectance in the VIS-NIR (using either Landsat 8, Sentinel-2, or field spectroscopy data) range combined with machine learning and geostatistics permitted the spatial mapping of SOM, CaCO3, and K-factor. Synergistic use of geospatial modeling based on the aforementioned soil properties and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) erosion assessment model enabled the estimation of soil loss risk. Finally, ordinary least square regression (OLSR) and geographical weighted regression (GWR) methodologies were employed in order to assess the potential contribution of different approaches in estimating soil erosion rates. The derived maps captured successfully the SOM, the CaCO3, and the K-factor spatial distribution in the GIS environment. Elevated CO2 treatments were applied in open-top chambers containing 3-year-old ponderosa pine (Pinusponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) seedlings. Nitrogen applications were made annually in early spring. The experimental design was a replicated factorial combination of CO2 (ambient,\uffe2\uff80\uff82+\uffe2\uff80\uff82175, and\uffe2\uff80\uff82+\uffe2\uff80\uff82350 \uffce\uffbcL\uffe2\uff80\uffa2L\uffe2\uff88\uff921 CO2) and N (0, 10, and 20 g\uffe2\uff80\uffa2m\uffe2\uff88\uff922 N as ammonium sulfate). Soils were irrigated to maintain soil moisture at &gt;25%. As part of a larger study of ecosystem response to thinning, we have examined the impact of this treatment on soil nitrogen dynamics, microbial biomass, cellulose decomposition, and foliar nutrition across a range of drainage conditions (good, imperfect, and poor). In the first year after thinning, initial early season ammonium (NH4+-N) pools in the mineral horizon were significantly higher in the thinned plots (P = 0.019), while net nitrogen mineralization (NH4+-N plus NO3--N) decreased in these same plots (P = 0.052). The thinning treatment significantly increased microbial biomass nitrogen (Nmic) in the organic horizon (P = 0.051). Simple regression analysis indicated the importance of soil temperature in controlling Nmic. Decomposition of cellulose substrate in the organic horizon was significantly increased by thinning, and mass loss was related to soil temperature. Increased decomposition and nutrient availability after thinning were reflected in improved N, P, and K nutrition in current, 1- and 2-year-old balsam fir needles. The aims were to compare ash types (wood, peat and coal ash), study the effects of ash treatment (pelletization), compare ash fertilization with commercial fertilizers, and to study the interaction between ash fertilization and weed control. Foliar samples were collected 1\u00e2\u0080\u00933 years and 7\u00e2\u0080\u00938 years after fertilization. In the unfertilized plots, the foliar nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were fairly high, while those of potassium were low in all the experiments. The boron levels were low in three out of the four experiments. Application of either loose or pelletized wood ash, as well as of commercial fertilizers, increased foliar potassium and boron concentrations, and thus successfully remedied the existing nutrient imbalances and deficiencies. Since phosphorus deficiencies are rarely encountered on field afforestation sites, poor-quality wood ash with low phosphorus concentration could be used. Peat ash containing phosphorus, but only small amounts of potassium and boron, was not found to be very suitable for soil amelioration in connection with field afforestation. Coal ash, containing only small amounts of potassium, was a good source of boron for pine even when used in small amounts, and thus it can be used in cases where boron deficiencies alone are encountered.
