Plastic mulch, mainly in the form of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), is widely used in agriculture to decrease evaporation, increase soil temperature and prevent weeds. The incomplete removal of LDPE mulch after use causes plastic contamination in agricultural soils. In conventional agriculture, the use of pesticides also leaves residues accumulating in soils. Thus, the objective of this study was to measure plastic and pesticide residues in agricultural soils and their effects on the soil microbiome. For this, we sampled soil (0-10\u00a0cm and 10-30\u00a0cm) from 18 parcels from 6 vegetable farms in SE Spain. The farms were under either organic or conventional management, where plastic mulch had been used for >25\u00a0years. We measured the macro- and micro-light density plastic debris contents, the pesticide residue levels, and a range of physiochemical properties. We also carried out DNA sequencing on the soil fungal and bacterial communities. Plastic debris (>100\u00a0\u03bcm) was found in all samples with an average number of 2\u00a0\u00d7\u00a0103\u00a0particles\u00a0kg-1 and area of 60\u00a0cm2\u00a0kg-1. We found 4-10 different pesticide residues in all conventional soils, for an average of 140\u00a0\u03bcg\u00a0kg-1. Overall, pesticide content was \u223c100 times lower in organic farms. The soil microbiomes were farm-specific and related to different soil physicochemical parameters and contaminants. Regarding contaminants, bacterial communities responded to the total pesticide residues, the fungicide Azoxystrobin and the insecticide Chlorantraniliprole as well as the plastic area. The fungicide Boscalid was the only contaminant to influence the fungal community. The wide spread of plastic and pesticide residues in agricultural soil and their effects on soil microbial communities may impact crop production and other environmental services. More studies are required to evaluate the total costs of intensive agriculture.", "keywords": ["2. Batch kinetics and isotherm studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of contact time, initial CPX concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and temperature. The adsorbents were characterized by ATR-FTIR, N2 sorption, SEM and XRD, while several isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models were evaluated attempting to shed light on the adsorption mechanisms. CPX adsorption on both adsorbents was better described by Langmuir model, with an adsorption capacity of 112.36\uffc2\uffa0mg/g for palygorskite and 11.79\uffc2\uffa0mg/g for bauxite. Thermodynamics revealed the endothermic and the spontaneous character of the process, indicating chemisorption as the main adsorption mechanism for both adsorbents. The pseudo-second-order and the Elovich models fitted satisfactorily the adsorption onto bauxite, while adsorption onto palygorskite was well presented by Weber\uffe2\uff80\uff93Morris model, indicating that pore diffusion is also involved in the process. The adsorption capacity of both minerals decreased significantly after being used for several adsorption cycles and then almost completely recovered (regeneration efficiency was 99.6% and 98% for palygorskite and bauxite, respectively) inside a novel cold plasma microbubble reactor energized by high-voltage nanopulses, revealing the potential of these adsorbents to be reused. Indeed, process and technological limitations have made HPC uncompetitive with respect to consolidated processes/technologies so far. In this manuscript, these issues are critically discussed and reviewed with the aim of providing the reader with a realistic picture of the prospective application of HPC in wastewater treatment. Accordingly, consolidated and new photocatalysts (among which the visible active ones are attracting increasing interest among the scientific community), along with preparation methods, are reviewed to understand whether, with increased process efficiency, these methods can be realistically and competitively developed at industrial scale. Precipitation is considered as an attractive method for photocatalyst preparation at the industrial scale; sol-gel and ultrasound may be feasible only if no expensive metal precursor is used, while hydrothermal and solution combustion synthesis are expected to be difficult (expensive) to scale up. The application of HPC in urban and industrial wastewater treatment and possible energy recovery by hydrogen production are discussed in terms of current limitations and future prospects. Despite the fact that HPC has been studied for the removal of pollutants in aqueous matrices for two decades, its use in wastewater treatment is still at a 'technological research' stage. In order to accelerate the adoption of HPC at full scale, it is advisable to focus on investigations under real conditions and on developing/improving pilot-scale reactors to better investigate scale-up conditions and the potential to successfully address specific challenges in wastewater treatment through HPC. A total of 18 L. monocytogenes isolates were obtained from 229 samples, and their genomes were sequenced to perform comparative genomic analyses. An increase in the frequency of isolation of L. monocytogenes and in the diversity of sequence types (STs) detected was observed along time. Although the strains isolated belonged to six different STs (ST8, ST9, ST14, ST37, ST121 and ST155), ST9 was the most abundant (8 out of 18 strains). Low (0 and 2) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) distances were found between two pairs of ST9 strains isolated in both cases 3\u00a0months apart from the same processing room (Lm-1267 and Lm-1705, with a 2 SNPs distance in the core genome; Lm-1265 and Lm-1706, with a 0 SNPs distance), which suggests that these strains may be persistent L. monocytogenes strains in the food processing environment. Most strains showed an in silico attenuated virulence potential either through the truncation of InlA (in 67% of the isolates) or the absence of other virulence factors involved in cell adhesion or invasion. Twelve of the eighteen L. monocytogenes isolates contained a plasmid, which ranged in size from 4 to 87 Kb and harbored stress survival, in addition to heavy metals and biocides resistance determinants. Identical or highly similar plasmids were identified for various sets of L. monocytogenes ST9 isolates, which suggests the clonal expansion and persistence of plasmid-containing ST9 strains in the processing environments of the meat facility. Finally, the analysis of the L. monocytogenes genomes available in the NCBI database, and their associated metadata, evidenced that strains from ST9 are more frequently reported in Europe, linked to foods, particularly to meat and pork products, and less represented among clinical isolates than other L. monocytogenes STs. Our results also suggest that N-cycling processes such as ammonia oxidation can be impacted indirectly by fungicide application. Herein, specific factors for the agricultural sector are innovative conversion technologies, flexible in and out logistics, joint investments in R&D, price competitiveness for bio-based products, partnerships with research organisations, space availability, subsidies, agricultural waste management regulations, local stakeholder involvement and acceptance of bio-based production processes.  Insights from this study can help farmers and agribusiness managers by defining and adapting their strategies within their local contexts. We studied specifically the effect of Straw (S) and Conifer Compost (CC) organic amendments and Clover (Cl) and Fescue (F) vegetation on the fate of copper (fungicide) in the surface layer of this loamy soil, through a comparison with the Non Amended soil (NA). After collection the five soils were immediately physically fractionated in order to obtain 5 granulometric size-fractions. All soils and size-fractions were quantitatively characterized in terms of granulometry, chemical content and copper distribution, speciation and bioavailability to bacteria and plants. The results showed strong increases of soil-constituents aggregation for all treatments (Cl>CC>S>F>NA), in relation with the increased cementation of soil-constituents by organic matter (OM). The distribution patterns of all major elements and organic carbon were found highly variable within the soil sub-fractions and also between the 5 treatments. Due to their specific inorganic and organic composition, soil sub-fractions can thus be considered as a specific microbial habitat. Added OM accumulated preferentially in the 20-2 \u03bcm and in the >250 \u03bcm of the 5 soils. The distribution patterns of copper as well as its speciation and bioavailability to bacteria in the soil sub-fractions were shown to be strongly different among the five soils, in relation with OM distribution. Our results also suggest that Cu-bioavailability to plants is controlled by soil-rhizosphere structure. Altogether our results permitted to show that long-term organic management of a vineyard soil induced stable modifications of soil physical and chemical properties at both macro and micro-scales. Nitrogen cycling was also affected, with a transient hymexazol-associated increase in the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms and soil nitrate concentration. Samples were subjected to a standardized exposure of simulated sunlight. We measured the apparent quantum yield (AQY), which corresponds to DOM photomineralization per photon absorbed, and the compositional change in DOM at bulk and individual compound levels in the original samples and after irradiation. AQY increased with the abundance of terrestrially derived DOM and decreased at higher WRT. Additionally, the photochemical changes in both DOM optical properties and molecular composition resembled changes along the natural boreal WRT gradient at low WRT (&lt;3\uffc2\uffa0years). Accordingly, mass spectrometry revealed that the abundance of photolabile and photoproduced molecules decreased with WRT along the boreal aquatic continuum. Our study highlights the tight link between DOM composition and DOM photodegradation. In the present work instead, a field experiment conducted in South Africa shows the seasonal microbial change occurring on grapevine leaves, periodically treated with two different fungicide treatments: copper sulphate and Lactobacillus plantarum MW-1. In this work, NGS data were combined with strain-specific and community qPCRs to reveal the shift of the microbial communities throughout the growing season and highlight the impact of fungicides on the microbiota. Only the family of Lactobacillaceae systematically changed between treatments, while the bacterial community remained relatively stable over time. MW-1 was exclusively detected on biocontrol-sprayed leaves. Conversely, the fungal community was largely shaped by sampling time, underlining the succession of different dominant taxa over the months. Between treatments, only a few fungal taxa appeared to change significantly and the fungal load was also comparable. The H2020-funded GreenPatrol project has developed an autonomous system for pest detection and treatment within commercial greenhouses. In this system the robot will navigate autonomously and regularly inspect crops using an array of cameras and algorithms to detect and treat pests at an early stage in order to improve yield, reduce pesticide use and improve worker conditions. A key enabler for this application is the localization and navigation function of the robot platform. In order to operate independently and autonomously, the robot must know in real-time its precise location and direction of pointing, it must be able to plan a route through the greenhouse from its current location to where it needs to go, it must be able to control its movements to reach its required destination, and it must be able to identify and avoid obstacles that may obstruct its route. In order to achieve these goals the robot sub-systems include an absolute localization function, to provide precise absolute position and heading in a global reference frame in real-time, a relative localization function, to provide more fidelity of the exact location and orientation of the robot with respect to its surroundings in the greenhouse, and a navigation function, to plan the route through the greenhouse and provide movement instructions to the robot platform. This paper describes the localization system of the GreenPatrol robot and presents results of testing for each of the functions. The tests include simulations as well as data collections and tests of the real-time system using the robot platform. The pomace was derived from white wine production, therefore, respect to red pomace, it was promptly removed from must after pressing, and its exploitation can be particularly interesting and valuable as still rich in active compounds. Phenol extracts were obtained both via solvent-based and pressurised liquid extractions and their phytochemical compositions were compared in terms of total amount of phenols, flavonoids, flavanols, anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, and reducing sugars. Antioxidant activity and detailed phenol profiles were also achieved. The highest phenol yield was obtained via solvent-based extraction with 75% acetone (v/v), solid/liquid ratio 1:5, 2h incubation at 50\u00b0C (77.9 gGAeq/kgDW). The fibrous solid residue of the extraction was characterized via thermogravimetric analysis and used for composite preparation by melt mixing with the renewable and biodegradable PHBV polymer through a green approach (solvent-less process). The composites resulted thermally stable at high temperatures, showing initial degradation processes only at temperatures higher than 250\u00b0C. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses were carried out to study melting and crystallization phenomena, while mechanical properties were investigated by tensile tests. The materials finally showed properties similar to those of the matrix. The system, called Tetracorder, is commanded by an expert system developed by expert spectroscopists. The Tetracorder and the expert system apply multiple algorithms to analyze a spectrum in segments, leveraging the advantages of each spectral region\uffe2\uff80\uff99s sensitivity to detecting different compounds, whether solid, liquid, or gas. The algorithms compare measured spectra to the spectral properties of materials in spectral libraries. The libraries include pure minerals, mineral mixtures that include areal mixtures, intimate mixtures, coatings, and molecular mixtures and other compounds such as organics, vegetation, liquids, and gases. Absorption bands of a particulate surface change shape with grain size, and shape changes are used in some cases to constrain grain size of each component in the surface. The different algorithm results are compared for each spectral region, and specific material composition and average grain size (when possible) are identified. The system is operational analyzing real-time data on a new generation of rovers for future planetary missions, as well as identifying materials using an imaging spectrometer on the International Space Station. Four abundance models are presented, each with increasing sophistication, that are computationally fast on imaging spectrometer data and use Tetracorder identifications to produce maps of mineral abundances. A fifth full radiative model that includes multilayer surfaces is presented but is computationally intensive. Its main features are: (i) the individual estimation of local, single-input-single-output ARX models at every operational point; (ii) the long time-scale representation of each individual ARX coefficient via a Gaussian process regression, which captures dependency on varying Environmental and Operational Conditions (EOCs); (iii) the establishment of a distributed residual generation algorithm for damage detection, which produces time-series of well-defined stationary statistics, with detected discrepancies used for damage diagnosis; and, (iv) exploitation of ARX-inferred mode shape curvatures, obtained via ARX-inferred global state-space models, of the healthy and damaged states, for damage localization. The Aethalometer AE33 and the Continuous Light Absorption Photometer (CLAP) were characterized during a laboratory campaign where different soot and mineral dust samples were measured. Furthermore, ambient measurements during a campaign in Granada, Spain, were used to characterize the AE33 and MAAP (Multiangle Absorption Photometer), a pseudo-reference absorption instrument. The laboratory campaign showed significant wavelength dependence of the calibration parameter, the multiple-scattering parameter C. The C of the AE33 at 450 and 808\u2009nm was 4.08 and 3.95 and 6.25 and 5.27 for propane soot and diesel soot, respectively. For the CLAP, the C was 5.10 and 4.26 and 6.79 and 5.80 for propane and diesel soot, respectively. For the different mineral dust samples analyzed in the laboratory, the C at 450\u2009nm ranged between 2.74 and 3.03 for the AE33 and between 2.50 and 2.80 for the CLAP. The ambient measurements at Granada showed an overall C of 4.72 at 450\u2009nm and of 3.90 at 808\u2009nm for the AE33. We aimed to unravel the DOM photoreactivity and concurrent DOM compositional changes across 30 boreal aquatic ecosystems including peat waters, streams, rivers, and lakes distributed along a water residence time (WRT) gradient. Samples were subjected to a standardized exposure of simulated sunlight. We measured the apparent quantum yield (AQY), which corresponds to DOM photomineralization per photon absorbed, and the compositional change in DOM at bulk and individual compound levels in the original samples and after irradiation. AQY increased with the abundance of terrestrially derived DOM and decreased at higher WRT. Additionally, the photochemical changes in both DOM optical properties and molecular composition resembled changes along the natural boreal WRT gradient at low WRT (&lt;3\uffc2\uffa0years). Accordingly, mass spectrometry revealed that the abundance of photolabile and photoproduced molecules decreased with WRT along the boreal aquatic continuum. Our study highlights the tight link between DOM composition and DOM photodegradation. Here, we investigate the existence of this layer during erosion events recorded in Iceland and Jordan. Size-resolved dust fluxes were estimated at three levels between 2 and 4\u00a0m using the eddy-covariance method. Dust fluxes were found mainly constant only between the two upper levels in Iceland, the lower dust flux being often stronger and richer in coarse particles, while dust fluxes in Jordan were nearly constant across all levels. The wind dynamics could not explain the absence of a constant dust flux layer in Iceland. We show that the presence of stationary dust source patches in Iceland, related to surface humidity, created a non-uniform dust layer near the surface, named dust roughness sublayer (DRSL), where individual plumes behind each patch interact but do not fully mix. The lowest dust measurement level was probably located within this sublayer while the upper ones were located above, such that there the emitted dust became spatially well-mixed. This explains near the surface in Iceland, the more intermittent dust concentration, its low correlation with the dust concentrations above, and the richer dust flux in coarse particles due to their lower deposition contribution. The high-frequency sampling capacity (1\u2009Hz) of some sensors may make them suitable for estimating dust emissions using the eddy-covariance method. Here, the capability of the low-cost OPC-N3 from Alphasense to estimate size-resolved dust flux using the eddy-covariance method is evaluated. During the Jordan Wind erosion And Dust Investigation (J-WADI) experiment, we tested one OPC-N3 against two traditional reference OPCs, the Promo and Fidas, from Palas GmbH. The N3 and Promo OPCs were located in close proximity to a sonic anemometer, enabling the correlation of dust concentration and vertical velocity fluctuations for estimating dust fluxes. Despite the high-temperature and dusty wind conditions of the campaign, the N3 monitored the dynamics and magnitude of dust concentration with reasonable precision. The turbulence characteristics of the dust concentration fluctuations measured by the N3, including variance, skewness, kurtosis, and energy spectrum, were similar to those from the Promo. However, the N3 flow rate exhibited variations under these outdoor conditions that affected the concentration of fine dust particles, and certain particles around 1\u2009\u00b5m appeared to be misclassified in the upper size bin. After correcting the N3 dust concentration to address these discrepancies and after calibrating it against a reference OPC, the N3 accurately estimated the dust emission flux, with differences of less than 30\u2009% compared to the reference OPC. Our results confirm the potential of low-cost OPCs for dust erosion research. Plastic mulch, mainly in the form of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), is widely used in agriculture to decrease evaporation, increase soil temperature and prevent weeds. The incomplete removal of LDPE mulch after use causes plastic contamination in agricultural soils. In conventional agriculture, the use of pesticides also leaves residues accumulating in soils. Thus, the objective of this study was to measure plastic and pesticide residues in agricultural soils and their effects on the soil microbiome. For this, we sampled soil (0-10\u00a0cm and 10-30\u00a0cm) from 18 parcels from 6 vegetable farms in SE Spain. The farms were under either organic or conventional management, where plastic mulch had been used for >25\u00a0years. We measured the macro- and micro-light density plastic debris contents, the pesticide residue levels, and a range of physiochemical properties. We also carried out DNA sequencing on the soil fungal and bacterial communities. Plastic debris (>100\u00a0\u03bcm) was found in all samples with an average number of 2\u00a0\u00d7\u00a0103\u00a0particles\u00a0kg-1 and area of 60\u00a0cm2\u00a0kg-1. We found 4-10 different pesticide residues in all conventional soils, for an average of 140\u00a0\u03bcg\u00a0kg-1. Overall, pesticide content was \u223c100 times lower in organic farms. The soil microbiomes were farm-specific and related to different soil physicochemical parameters and contaminants. Regarding contaminants, bacterial communities responded to the total pesticide residues, the fungicide Azoxystrobin and the insecticide Chlorantraniliprole as well as the plastic area. The fungicide Boscalid was the only contaminant to influence the fungal community. The wide spread of plastic and pesticide residues in agricultural soil and their effects on soil microbial communities may impact crop production and other environmental services. The dynamics of fixed-wing UAVs are modelled by unicycle-type equations with nonholonomic constraints, assuming that UAVs fly at constant altitudes in the nominal operation mode. The controller is designed such that all fixed-wing UAVs as a group can collaboratively track a desired target's position and velocity. We first present conditions on the relative speeds of tracking UAVs and the target to ensure that the tracking objective can be achieved when UAVs are subject to constant speed constraints. We construct a reference velocity that includes both the target's velocity and position as feedback, which is to be tracked by the group centroid. In this way, all vehicles' headings are controlled such that the group centroid follows a reference trajectory that successfully tracks the target's trajectory. To quantify such indirect effects, we fragmented a soil microbial community by filtration to alter biotic interactions and compared the effect of the fungicide hymexazol between fractions in soil microcosms. We postulated that OTUs which are indirectly affected would exhibit a different response to the fungicide across the fragmented communities. We found that hymexazol primarily affected bacterial and fungal communities through indirect effects, which were responsible for more than 75% of the shifts in relative abundance of the dominant microbial OTUs after exposure to an agronomic dose of hymexazol. However, these indirect effects decreased for the bacterial community when hymexazol doses increased. Our results also suggest that N-cycling processes such as ammonia oxidation can be impacted indirectly by fungicide application. This work sheds light on the indirect impact of fungicide exposure on soil microorganisms through biotic interactions, which underscores the need for higher-tier risk assessment. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: In this study, we used a novel approach based on the fragmentation of the soil microbial community to determine to which extent fungicide application could indirectly affect fungi and bacteria through biotic interactions. Here, we developed a fast-track high-throughput spore germination test, for AM fungi produced in vitro. This test allows the determination of EC50 values and the nature of the effects of pesticides on AM fungal spores (fungicidal or fungistatic). First, 19 active ingredients were tested on Rhizophagus intraradices MUCL 49410. Secondly, five of these compounds, varying in their toxicity to R. intraradices, were tested on three additional AM fungi (Rhizophagus irregularis MUCL 41833, Rhizophagus clarus MUCL 46238 and Rhizophagus aggregatus MUCL 49408). Our results showed that the toxicity of pesticides varied according to their chemical nature, concentration and AM fungal species tested. With the exception of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP, a transformation product of chlorpyrifos), insecticides and herbicides had no detrimental effect on spore germination at the concentration expected in soil upon application of the recommended dose, unlike most fungicides, which had an impact on one or more AM fungi. Fludioxonil and pyraclostrobin were by far the most problematic fungicide and R. aggregatus the most sensitive strain to pesticides. This AM fungus could thus be a good indicator to be used in standard ecotoxicity testing.
