However, despite the often-stated potential of agroforestry, quantitative data on the benefits of shade trees are limited to relatively few cropping systems, particularly maize and coffee. Furthermore, agroforests are not cost-free and the benefits of agroforests might not be sufficient to outweigh these costs in all cropping systems or environments. Here we quantify costs and benefits of agroforests for cocoa production in Ghana, West Africa. Specifically, we quantified the ability of shade trees to increase soil carbon stocks and soil fertility (i.e. total soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, available phosphorus and potassium, cation exchange capacity, soil aggregation, pH, and foliar nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations), and investigate if these benefits are sufficient to outweigh the negative effects of shade trees on cocoa growth and yields. We measured cocoa yields, soil fertility and carbon-sequestration under individual shade trees, and in 30 × 30 m plots that were distributed along a gradient of shade-tree cover (plot-scale). We found localized positive effects of individual shade trees on soil carbon and nitrogen content, as well as soil aggregation. However, we found no evidence for positive effects of agroforests via improved soil fertility or carbon-sequestration with increasing shade-tree cover at the plot scale, a scale that more closely matches the scale at which agroforests are managed. Cocoa growth was lower under individual shade trees and decreased with increasing shade-tree cover in plots, and cocoa yields also decreased with increasing shade-tree cover. Our results indicate that the benefits of agroforestry for soil fertility and carbon sequestration in cocoa cultivation systems might not be as extensive as believed, and may not be sufficient to compensate for short-term costs to production.
Theobroma-Cacao", "2. Appropriate species compositions and spacing regimes are critical to achieve ecosystem benefits and improve yields of all the component crops. Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) is an important cash crop globally but it requires shade for survival and growth. However, the effects of shade-tree species composition and spacing regime on nutrient cycling in cocoa plantations are not well understood. This study investigated the effects of shade tree species and spacing regimes on soil and plant nutrient availability at 8 years after plantation establishment in Papua New Guinea. Three cocoa intercropping systems were established in which T. cacao was planted with either a non-legume timber tree, Canarium indicum, or a legume non-timber tree, Gliricidia sepium. The shade-tree spacing regimes included either 8 m × 16 m or 8 m × 8 m in the Theobroma + Canarium plantations. There was an ongoing thinning regime in the Theobroma + Gliricidia plantation, with a final shade-tree spacing of 12 m × 12 m. Soil total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN) were significantly higher in the Theobroma + Gliricidia plantation with 12 m × 12 m spacing and the Theobroma + Canarium plantation with 8 m × 16 m spacing than in the Theobroma + Canarium plantation with 8 m × 8 m spacing. Foliar TN and P were correlated with soil TN and P, respectively, whereas no correlation was detected between soil and leaf K concentrations. Foliar TN, P and K were under ideal concentrations for T. cacao in all of the plantations. The Theobroma + Gliricidia plantation had higher soil water extractable phosphorus (P) than the two Theobroma + Canarium plantations, probably due to frequent pruning of the G. sepium trees. Foliar C isotope composition (δ13C) of T. cacao suggested that T. cacao close to G. sepium or close to C. indicum with spacing of 8 m × 16 m and 8 m × 8 m had similar light interception. However, increased C. indicum spacing increased the light interception of T. cacao trees that were not planted next to C. indicum. This study indicated that non-legume timber trees with an optimized spacing regime can be used as overstorey shade trees for T. cacao. However, our study indicated all three plantations required fertilisation and better nutrient management.
571", "stable isotopes", "FoR 16 (Studies in Human Society)", "Canarium indicum", "Soil fertility", "Gliricidia sepium", "333", "630", "Papua New Guinea", "veterinary and food sciences", "Stable isotopes", "2. Thinning of native forests helps to preserve native tree species and is more sustainable than replacing native forest stands with mono-species plantations to produce timber. This study aimed to explore the effects of native forest thinning on soil-plant carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics in two experimental sites, Esk (5 years post-thinning) and Herberton (7 years post-thinning), situated in Queensland, Australia. The two sites had different thinning regimes. The final stocking rates varied between 75 and 200 stems ha−1 at Esk and between 250 and 400 stems ha−1 at Herberton. The thinned plots were compared to un-thinned plots. Soil samples were collected to measure labile C and N. Leaf samples were collected from C. variegata and C. citriodora in Esk and Herberton respectively. Thinning did not change soil total C, total N, δ15N and inorganic N at either Esk or Herberton. However, at Esk, intensive thinning resulted in decreases in water soluble total N (WSTN). Foliar δ13C did not vary with respect to thinning whereas foliar δ15N values were more enriched in thinned areas than those of un-thinned plots. The stepwise linear regression indicated that both foliar total N and δ15N were explained mainly by soil TN and WSTN. Thinning did not change soil C and N most likely due to the retention of thinned materials on site and their incorporation into soil. Foliar δ13C was not thinning-dependent due to homeostatic maintenance of the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentrations during photosynthesis. In our study, soil N was not a limiting factor for foliar N, however, foliar N was mainly driven by WSTN which may foreshadow a possible N limitation in severely thinned plots in the long term. We conclude that forest thinning does not decrease soil C and N availability in native Corymbia forests for several years post-thinning if the thinned materials are retained on site.
570", "Corymbia spp", "Inorganic nitrogen", "stable isotopes", "veterinary and food sciences", "eucalyptus spp", "Other environmental sciences not elsewhere classified", "FoR 06 (Biological Sciences)", "Stable isotopes", "Farm forestry", "580", "Agricultural", "farm forestry", "FoR 07 (Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences)", "inorganic nitrogen", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. To address this issue, we evaluated the influence of common agricultural management practices (cropping and livestock systems) vs. the Quesungual slash-and-mulch agroforestry system (QSMAS) on diverse parameters of soil quality and function. We then used this information to identify soil invertebrate bioindicators that represent key aspects of soil quality (chemical fertility, physical properties, aggregate morphology, and biological functioning). In February of 2011 soil sampling was conducted on six hillside farms near the town of Somotillo in western Nicaragua to assess soil properties and the abundance and diversity of soil macrofauna within four management systems: (1) QSMAS, based on maize production, (2) traditional maize cropping system with few trees (TC), (3) silvopastoral system with low tree density (SP), and (4) secondary forest (SF), used as a reference. While there is a significant body of research around agroecology, its origins, applications, and as a much-needed transition pathway to sustainable food systems, there is limited understanding on how agroecology may be situated within policy frameworks and how agroecological knowledge may be used to inform decision-making. In England, as the Government’s post-Brexit subsidy scheme – the Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMs) – is developed, various sectoral actors are employing different frameworks in attempts to deliver multiple objectives around land use, food, agriculture and biodiversity. This paper reviews 3 influential frameworks (Sustainable Development Goals, Ecosystem Services, FAO’s 10 Principles of Agroecology) and assesses the degree to which they contribute to the development of agroecologically-oriented policy in England. With a specific focus on agroforestry as an exemplar agroecological approach, this paper contributes to the limited policy literature on agroecology. Using thematic and content analysis, nine policy documents pertaining to agroforestry were reviewed, resulting in a ‘degree of embeddedness’ being assigned to each framework. Results showed that all three frameworks had a low degree of embeddedness in policy; in other words, none of the frameworks considered have been coherently integrated into current policy documents. With such urgency to halt environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, climate breakdown and food insecurity, the apparent lack of knowledge transfer within critical policy documents is noteworthy. The first area was a pastured dehesa (P) with young Holm oaks, planted in 1995 (70 trees ha−1, 12 m × 12 m) and, since 2000, grazed by sheep (3 sheep ha−1) with an average period of grazing of six months a year. Prior to this it was managed in the same way as the second adjacent area. The second area was a cropped dehesa (C) with widely spaced mature Holm oak (14 trees in a 12-ha dehesa), on which a mixture of vetch and oats was cultivated every three years and tilled with a chisel plough. After 22 years both dehesas showed similar SOC stock distribution amongst areas with different soil management, with approximately 40 t ha−1 in the top 100 cm of the soil. The P dehesa only showed higher SOC stock than the C dehesa on the surface 0–2 cm (5.86 ± 0.56 t ha-1vs 3.24 ± 0.37 t ha−1). The influence of the trees, increasing SOC concentration and content when compared to the area outside the canopy projection, was only detected under the mature trees in the C dehesa. In the area outside the tree canopy, both systems showed a similar distribution of soil organic carbon among their different fractions, with the unprotected fraction being the dominant one, followed by the physically and chemically protected fractions. In the C dehesa, the mature trees’ presence significantly modified the distribution of soil organic carbon in their surroundings, increasing the relevance of the unprotected fraction. The distribution of soil organic carbon in the unprotected and physically and chemically protected fractions were strongly correlated to the overall organic carbon concentration in the soil, indicating the rapid response of these three fractions to management, with the biochemically protected fraction showing no correlation, suggesting a high resilience to the changes in carbon budget. This study aimed to investigate tree-species and tree-distance effects on soil biota in a temperate agroforestry system. Our study was conducted at a paired alley-cropping and monoculture cropland system. The tree rows of the agroforestry system comprised of blocks of poplar Jacometti 78B, poplar Max 1 or black locust. Within the agroforestry system, soil microbial and earthworm communities were collected along transects spanning from the center of the tree rows into the crop rows. Archaea, bacteria, and fungi were quantified using real-time PCR. The community composition of fungi and earthworms was deciphered using amplicon sequencing and morphological identification, respectively.

Research domain: Soil Sciences

Research question: This study aimed to investigate the impact of three different tree species (two poplar species and black locust) on soil biota (archaea, bacteria, fungi, and earthworms) in a temperate alley-cropping agroforestry system. Furthermore, tree-distance effects on soil biota were tested by sampling multiple locations along transects spanning from the tree row into the crop row of the agroforestry system. We hypothesized that tree rows promote the abundance and alter the community composition of soil biota. We further hypothesized that these changes are dependent on the distance to the trees (tree-distance effect) as well as the tree species (tree-species effect).
["Soil", "soil microorganisms", "opendata", "temperate agroforestry; For this purpose, 360 individual trees and a total of six different high-quality tree species were planted in groups of three (the species of the individual trees within a group were always identical) on the study site. The tree species used were: wild pears (Pyrus pyraster), red oaks (Quercus rubra), wild service trees (Sorbus torminalis), hazel trees (Corylus colurna), service tree (Sorbus domestica) and sessile oaks (Quercus petraea). The 360 individual trees were distributed across seven 2 m wide strips and a hedge. A distance of 36 m was maintained between the strips. The strips and the hedge have a total length of 1.4 km. The distance in the row between the groups of trees is roughly 13 m.

Site description:

The agroforestry site is located in the municipality of Löwenberger Land (municipality of Großmutz), in the north of Brandenburg (33U 374170 5866893). The surrounding fields are also predominantly used for arable farming. The study area itself covers 6.25 hectares and is farmed conventionally. The soil consists of glacial sediments with the soil types loamy and light loamy sand and sands. The site is on average 54 m above sea level and has a total difference in altitude of 7.3 m. The terrain has a slight slope with a small depression in the north. For a large part of the area, the soil fertility index according to soil estimates is 45, for the northern depression area 31 (BB ALKIS). The site is located in the temperate, continental climate zone with a long-term average annual temperature of 9.5 °C and an average annual precipitation of 582 mm.

["Soil", "ecosystem services", "farming systems", "robotics", "digital technology", "needs assessment", "decision-support systems", "agroforestry", "alley cropping", "opendata", "Focus Area", "high value timber", "temperate agroforestry", "Boden", "Germany", "Löwenberger Land
["publisher
["Eberswalder Strasse 84

["author
[null

["author
[null

["author
[null
Sonoko D.
