Understanding the variability of post-fire C cycling on  heterogeneous landscapes is critical for predicting changes in C storage  with more frequent disturbance. We measured C pools and fluxes for 77  lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud var. latifolia Engelm.)  stands in and around Yellowstone National Park (YNP) along a 300-year  chronosequence to examine how quickly forest C pools recover after a  stand-replacing fire, their variability through time across a complex  landscape, and the role of stand structure in this variability. Carbon  accumulation after fire was rapid relative to the historical mean fire  interval of 150-300 years, recovering nearly 80% of pre-fire C in 50 years  and 90% within 100 years. Net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) declined  monotonically from 160 g C m-2 yr-1 at age 12 to 5 g C m 2 yr-1 at age  250, but was never negative after disturbance. Decomposition and  accumulation of dead wood contributed little to NECB relative to live  biomass in this system. Aboveground net primary productivity was  correlated with leaf area for all stands, and the decline in aboveground  net primary productivity with forest age was related to a decline in both  leaf area and growth efficiency. Forest structure was an important driver  of ecosystem C, with ecosystem C, live biomass C, and organic soil C  varying with basal area or tree density in addition to forest age. Rather  than identifying a single chronosequence, we found high variability in  many components of ecosystem C stocks through time; a &gt; 50% random  subsample of the sampled stands was necessary to reliably estimate the  non-linear equation coefficients for ecosystem C. At the spatial scale of  YNP, this variability suggests that landscape C develops via many pathways  over decades and centuries, with prior stand structure, regeneration, and  within-stand disturbance all important. With fire rotation projected to be  &lt; 30 years by mid century in response to a changing climate,  forests in YNP will store substantially less C (at least 4.8 kg C/m2 or  30% less).", "keywords": ["Pinus contorta var. latifolia", "13. The objectives of this study were: (1) to quantify the effect of contrasting methods of organic residue management on tree growth and soil CO2 effluxes in the first 2 years after planting and (2) to evaluate the impact of organic residue manipulations on the mineralization of soil organic matter over the length of the experiment. Three treatments were setup in 0.125 ha plots and replicated in three blocks at the harvesting of a Congolese Eucalyptus stand, resulting in an aboveground organic residue mass ranging from 0 to 6.3 kg m \ufffd 2 . The mineralization of SOM was deduced in each treatment by partitioning sources of soil CO2 effluxes using decomposition experiments and by upscaling specific root respiration. Soil CO2 effluxes were greatly affected by seasons and organic residue manipulation, although there were no significant changes in topsoil water content and topsoil temperature over most of the study period. Aboveground organic residue was the first contributor to soil CO2 efflux in the two treatments with a litter layer. Organic residue management did not significantly influence the mineralization of SOM in our study, probably due to the low quality of Eucalyptus litter, or to the hypothetical lack of dissolved organic carbon transfers from litter to soil. Here, using a process based, integrative, modelling approach to upscale from existing observations, we estimate a global terrestrial DOC leaching flux of 0.28\uffc2\uffa0\uffc2\uffb1\uffc2\uffa00.07\uffc2\uffa0Gt\uffc2\uffa0C\uffc2\uffa0year\uffe2\uff88\uff921 which is conservative, as it only includes the contribution of mineral soils. Our results suggest that globally about 15% of the terrestrial Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP, calculated as the difference between Net Primary Production and soil respiration) is exported to aquatic systems as leached DOC. In the tropical rainforest, the leached fraction of terrestrial NEP even reaches 22%. Furthermore, we simulated spatial\uffe2\uff80\uff90temporal trends in DOC leaching from soil to the river networks from 1860 to 2010. We estimated a global increase in terrestrial DOC inputs to river network of 35\uffc2\uffa0Tg\uffc2\uffa0C\uffc2\uffa0year\uffe2\uff88\uff921 (14%) from 1860 to 2010. Despite their low global contribution to the DOC leaching flux, boreal regions have the highest relative increase (28%) while tropics have the lowest relative increase (9%) over the historical period (1860s compared to 2000s). By contrast, overall rates of Rdark (averaged across both [CO2]) were ca. 25% lower under drought than in well\uffe2\uff80\uff90watered trees. Despite scarce empirical evidence, paludiculture is expected to have significant GHG mitigation potential for organic soils. This study provides the first comprehensive dataset on full GHG balances for newly established fen paludicultures over a water table (WT) gradient spanning annual mean WT of \u22120.29 m to +0.04 m, stratified into moderately rewetted conditions (\u22120.30 m < WT < \u22120.10 m) and rewetted conditions (WT \u2265 \u22120.10 m). We used manual and novel automated chambers to measure annual carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide emissions from five typical fen plant species (Carex acutiformis, Phalaris arundinacea, Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia and T. latifolia) newly established as peatland biomass crops in three temperate fen peatlands in southern Germany. Our study confirms a significant GHG mitigation potential for the tested plant species and found a C sink function of paludiculture. The results yield preliminary emission factors of \u22120.1 and \u221212.0 t CO2-equivalents ha\u22121 yr\u22121 under moderately rewetted conditions (n=39) and under rewetted conditions (n=43), respectively. We further identify an optimal annual mean WT of \u22120.07 m for maximizing GHG reduction across all plant species and sites with a net C sink achieved at a mean annual WT of \u2265 \u22120.12 m. Presuming the conversion of arable land into paludiculture, a mitigation potential of up to \u221251.9 t CO2-equivalent is attainable per hectare and year. Here, we present a low-cost NDVI sensor device, priced under 250 Euros, which can be utilized both manually as a handheld tool and automatically as a standalone device to address this issue. We calibrated and field validated the low-cost NDVI sensor against a commercial sensor for ground-based NDVI measurements. Our calibration revealed a slight underestimation at higher NDVI values measured from the low-cost sensor, which we adjusted using a correction function. Field validation proved the accuracy of low-cost sensor device, with a high correlation (r\u00b2 = 0.99; y = 1.04x + 0.003) and good agreement with the reference device, after applying then derived correction function. Further field trial application of the low-cost sensor as a handheld device (manual mode) in Benin and the Philippines for rice and pineapple cultivation, respectively, demonstrated the reliability of the device to monitor crop development and biomass accumulation. An additional field testing in an oat field site in Germany showed that the developed low-cost NDVI sensor, functioning as a standalone automatic device, is robust, reliable and capable to monitor crop development during senescence, through higher temporal resolution NDVI measurements. Therefore, identifying land use systems and management practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and promote water use efficiency (WUE) is crucial. This however, requires accurate and precise measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes and evapotranspiration (ET). Despite that, commercial systems to measure CO2 and ET fluxes are expensive and thus, often exclude research in ecosystems within the Global South. This is especially true for research and data of agroecosystems in these areas, which are to date still widely underrepresented. Here, we present a newly developed, low-cost, non-dispersive infrared (NDIR)-based, CO2 and ET flux measurement device (~ 200 Euro) that provides reliable, accurate and precise CO2 and ET flux measurements in conjunction with manual closed chambers. To validate the system, laboratory and field validation experiments were performed, testing multiple different low-cost sensors. We demonstrate that the system delivers accurate and precise CO2 and ET flux measurements using the K30 FR NDIR (CO2) and SHT31 (RH) sensor. An additional field trial application demonstrated its longer-term stability ( 3 months) and ability to obtain valid net ecosystem C balances (NECB) and WUE. This was the case, even though environmental conditions at the field trial application site in Sub-Saharan Africa were rather challenging (e.g., extremely high temperatures, humidity and intense rainfall). Understanding these responses is hence essential for developing sustainable agriculture systems that can help to adapt to global challenges such as inter-alia increased drought. Typically, an initial understanding of GHG and water flux dynamics is gained through laboratory or greenhouse pot experiments, where gas exchange is often measured using commercially available, manual closed (leaf) chamber systems. However, these systems are usually rather expensive and often labor-intensive, thus limiting the number of different treatments that can be studied and their repetitions. Here, we present a fully automatic, low-cost (1.000 Euro), multi-chamber system based on Arduino, termed \u201cgreenhouse coffins\u201d. It is designed to continuously measure canopy CO2 and ET fluxes. And it can operate in two modes: an independent and a dependent measurement mode. The independent measurement mode utilizes low-cost NDIR CO2 (K30 FR) and relative humidity (SHT31) sensors, thus making each \u201cgreenhouse coffin\u201d a fully independent measurement device. The dependent measurement mode connects multiple \u201cgreenhouse coffins\u201d via a low-cost multiplexer ( 250 Euro) to a single infrared gas analyzer (LI-850, LI-COR Inc., Lincoln, USA), allowing for measurements in series, achieving cost efficiency, while also gaining more flexibility in terms of target GHG fluxes (potential extension to N2O, CH4, stable isotopes). In both modes, CO2 and ET fluxes are determined through the respective concentration increase during closure time. We tested both modes and demonstrated that the presented system is able to deliver precise and accurate CO2 and ET flux measurements using low-cost sensors, with an emphasis on calibrating the sensors to improve measurement precision. Through connecting multiple greenhouse coffins via our low-cost Multiplexer to a single infrared gas analyzer in the dependent mode, we could show moreover that the system can efficiently measure CO2 and ET fluxes in a high temporal resolution across various treatments with both labor and cost efficiency.
