An intellectual view of philosophy as an activity focusing on understanding abstract concepts and their relationships deprives philosophical exercise of the participation of the body and senses. If we reject the mind-body dualism, as Dewey, Johnson, etc. did, then we are constantly engaged in interactions with the world and others, and can thus consider the act of thinking from our own experiences. Inspired by an experimentalist conception of school and life, as well as the method of inquiry developed by Dewey, the Philosophy for Children program provides an inquiry process that invites participants to conceptualize and reason philosophically in a collaborative manner. Do these practices implement an embodied cognition? To find out, we selected a discussion as a case study and analyzed it based on the observation that the issue to be discussed by the participants - \u201cwhere do thoughts come from?\u201d contains two image schemas: path (come from) and source (where). We have noted a variety and a significant number of expressions (\u201cthey come from within\u201d, \u201cthey come from what happens outside\u201d, etc.) whose analysis enhances a better understanding of how an experience of understanding the origins of our thoughts fits into the discourse and contributes to a collective conceptualization of \u201cthinking\u201d.</p></article>", "keywords": ["4. However, both mechanisms show certain constraints in designing systems with wide bandgaps in the low-frequency range. To face the main practical challenges encountered in such cases, including heavy oscillating masses, a simple dynamic directional amplification (DDA) mechanism is proposed as the base of the phononic lattice. This amplifier is designed to present the same mass and use the same damping element as a reference two-dimensional (2D) phononic metamaterial. Thus, no increase in the structure mass or the viscous damping is needed. The proposed DDA can be realized by imposing kinematic constraints to the structure\u2019s degrees of freedom (DoF), improving inertia and damping on the desired direction of motion. Analysis of the 2D lattice via Bloch\u2019s theory is performed, and the corresponding dispersion relations are derived. The numerical results of an indicative case study show significant improvements and advantages over a conventional phononic structure, such as broader bandgaps and increased damping ratio. We classified primary forest as forest that had not previously been cleared and used for other land uses. The conversion of cropland or grassland to forest includes naturally generated and intentionally planted forest. Cropland is land used for growing agricultural crops and may include short pasture phases, and grassland is land used continuously for grazing purposes, but may include occasional and repeated pasture-renewal phases. While we tried to make categorical distinctions between these land-use types, land uses are often more fluid in practice, which may not always have been stated in the publications underlying our data compilation. When a paper reported both contents and stocks, we used the stock-based measure. We used reported stocks if the original work had already been corrected to equivalent soil mass (Ellert and Bettany, 1995) or if corrected stocks had been reported in previous reviews or meta-analyses (Don et al., 2011; Poeplau et al., 2011; Guo and Gifford, 2002). Where bulk-density correction had not been applied, we tried to make those corrections to estimate changes to equivalent soil mass if studies provided sufficient information on soil bulk density and depth, using the method of Zhang et al. (2004). The PLFA extraction method can yield two additional lipid fractions\u2014neutral lipids and glycolipids\u2014which potentially hold additional, valuable information on soil microbial communities. Yet its quantitative sensitivity on complete neutral lipid (NLFA) and glycolipid fatty acid (GLFA) profiles has never been validated. In this study we tested (i) if the high-throughput PLFA method can be expanded to concurrently extract complete NLFA and GLFA profiles, as well as sterols, (ii) whether taxonomic specificities of signature fatty acids are retained across the three lipid fractions in pure culture strains, and (iii) whether NLFAs and GLFAs allow soil-specific fingerprinting to the same extent as PLFA analysis. By adjusting the polarity of chloroform with 2% ethanol for solid phase extraction, pure lipid standards were fully fractionated into neutral lipids, glycolipids, and phospholipids. Sterols eluted in the neutral lipid fraction, and a betaine lipid co-eluted with phospholipids. We found consistent taxonomic specificities of fatty acid markers across the three lipid fractions by analysing pure culture extracts representative of soil microbes. Fatty acid profiles from soil extracts, however, showed stronger differences between PLFAs, NLFAs, and GLFAs than between soil types. This indicates that PLFAs and NLFAs signify different community properties (biomass vs. carbon storage, putatively), and that GLFAs are sensitive markers for community traits which behave differently than PLFAs. Although we consistently found high abundances of characteristic sterols in fungal extracts, the PLFA extraction method only yielded miniscule amounts of ergosterol from soil extracts. Grazing treatments were a factorial arrangement of two stocking rates (62\u00b75 and 125 kg live weight ha~1) and four sheep:goat ratios (0:6, 2:4, 4:2 and 6:0 animals per pasture), with two pastures per treatment and two ungrazed controls. Observations were also made in a fallow subjected to 9 years of intense and uncontrolled mixed grazing, and in a site that had been protected from grazing for 15 years. The topsoil was sampled (at depths of 0\u20132, 2\u20136, 6\u201314 and 14\u201330 cm) below shrub canopy in herbaceous vegetation and in bare soil patches within each of 20 paddocks for determination of pH, organic C, and total N and P concentrations. Soil bulk density was measured in a subset of soil profiles. The areal extent of different types of soil crusts and other soil surface features was assessed in one-half of the paddocks. Grazing resulted in a reduction (p(0\u00b701) and fragmentation of the area of crusted soils. However, this trend was partially compensated for by an increase of newly formed crusts. As a result, the soil infiltration index slightly increased with moderate grazing, but decreased at higher stocking rates. Compaction due to trampling was observed in the topsoil beneath the shrub canopy and also in vegetated patches, but only under intense grazing pressure. Soil bulk density was not affected by grazing except for an increase observed below 10 cm depth at the understorey of shrubs which is therefore unlikely due to trampling. When compared to the ungrazed control, pH, organic C and N concentrations, and to lesser extent P concentration, decreased after 4 years of grazing. Soil P and pH further decreased after 9 years of very high grazing pressure. In only one city, hospital wastewater was treated on-site using advanced technologies, including membrane bioreactor treatment (MBR), ozonation, granulated activated carbon (GAC) and UV-treatment. On-site hospital wastewater (HWW) treatment reduced gene presence of hospital-related antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotic concentrations in the receiving urban wastewater treatment plant. These findings support the need for on-site treatment of high-risk point sources of antibiotic resistance genes. 13 antibiotic resistance genes, Integrase Class 1 and 16S rRNA concentrations were quantified using multiplex quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays and the presence and/or concentration of 711 antibiotics were analyzed. Hospital wastewater contained approximately 25% more antibiotics and gene concentrations between 0.4 log to 1.8-fold higher than communal wastewater (CWW). blaKPC and vanA could be identified as hospital-related genes and were reduced to under the limit of detection (LOD) during on-site treatment. Advanced on-site treatment removed between 0.5 and 3.6-fold more genes than conventional biological urban wastewater treatment (activated sludge). Advanced on-site treatment was able to eliminate 12 out of 19 detected antibiotics, while urban waste water treatment eliminated up to 1 (out of 21 detected). Different advanced treatment technologies were able to target different pollutants to varying extents, making sequential alignment more effective. MBR treatment was most efficient in antibiotic resistance gene reduction and ozonation in antibiotic reduction. blaKPC could only be detected in the influent of the urban wastewater treatment plant receiving untreated hospital wastewater. Similarly, vanA was only consistently detected in this treatment plant. This extracellular matrix, produced by the microorganisms themselves, serves as the first barrier between the cells and the environment. It is composed mainly of water, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), lipids, proteins, and DNA. Cyanobacteria form biofilms and have unique characteristics such as oxygenic photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, excellent adaptability to various abiotic stress conditions, and the ability to secrete a variety of metabolites and hormones. This work focused on the characterization of the cyanobacterium Halomicronema sp. strain isolated from a brackish environment. This study included microscopic imaging, determination of phenolic content and antioxidant capacity, identification of chemicals interfering with biofilm formation, and transcriptomic analysis by RNA sequencing and real-time PCR. Gene expression analysis was centered on genes related to the production of EPS and biofilm-related transcription factors. This study led to the identification of wza1 and wzt as EPS biomarkers and luxR-05665, along with genes belonging to the TetR/AcrR and LysR families, as potential biomarkers useful for studying and monitoring biofilm formation under different environmental conditions. We conducted a soil-incubation experiment in a climate-controlled chamber with three levels of microplastic added to loess soil collected from the Loess Plateau in China: 0% (control, CK), 7% (M1) and 28% (M2) (w/w). We analysed the soil contents of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), NH4+, NO3-, dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), and PO43- and the activities of fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse) and phenol oxidase. The higher level of microplastic addition significantly increased the nutrient contents of the DOM solution. The lower level of addition had no significant effect on the DOM solution during the first seven days, but the rate of DOM decomposition decreased in M1 between days 7 and 30, which increased the nutrient contents. The microplastic facilitated the accumulation of high-molecular-weight humic-like material between days 7 and 30. The DOM solutions were mainly comprised of high-molecular-weight humic-like material in CK and M1 and of high-molecular-weight humic-like material and tyrosine-like material in M2. The Microplastic stimulated the activities of both enzymes. Microplastic addition thus stimulated enzymatic activity, activated pools of organic C, N, and P, and was beneficial for the accumulation of dissolved organic C, N and P.", "keywords": ["2. The Fe in the crystal structure of vivianite can be substituted by other divalent metal cations such as Mn2+ or Mg2+. Since Mg is much more abundant in coastal porewaters than Mn, the more frequent reports of Mn substitution in vivianites of coastal sediments has been suggested to indicate a preferential incorporation of Mn over Mg into the crystal structure of vivianite. However, although both Mn and Mg substitution in vivianite are environmentally relevant, it is yet unknown whether Mn or Mg is preferentially incorporated and how these isomorphic substitutions alter the crystal structure and morphology of vivianite, parameters which may influence vivianite reactivity. Here, we studied the incorporation of Mn and/or Mg in vivianites formed by co-precipitation at pH 7 in the presence of varying dissolved Mn and/or Mg concentrations and solution salinities resembling an estuarine gradient from 0 to 9 psu. In total, 19 different vivianites were synthesized, with up to 50% of Fe substituted by Mn and Mg. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations showed that aqueous Mg speciation was altered with increasing salinity, while Mn speciation was less affected, likely explaining the preferential incorporation of Mn in the vivianite structure at higher salinities. 57Fe-M\u00f6ssbauer spectroscopy revealed that both Mn and Mg were preferentially incorporated in the double-octahedral Fe position, at which intervalence charge transfer is possible during the oxidation of vivianite. In contrast to Mg, which is redox inactive, incorporated Mn can participate in heteronuclear intervalence charge transfer with Fe. Thus, incorporation of either cation may impact the reactivity of vivianite under oxidizing conditions in element specific ways. Results of complementary analyses including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy further showed that incorporation of Mn and/or Mg led to smaller particle size, increased crystal roughness and thinner crystals, as well as systematic changes in unit cell parameters. After 5 months, soil from mesocosms with earthworms had significantly lower C concentration and higher proportion of large water-stable macroaggregates (>2000\u00a0\u03bcm) than those without earthworms, because of the production of large macroaggregates by earthworms. Earthworm effect on soil aggregation was greater with rice than with soybean residues. Casts (extracted from mesocosms with earthworms) were slightly enriched in C and showed significantly higher mineralization than the non-ingested soil (NIS), showing that at the time scale of our study, the carbon contained in the casts was not protected against mineralization. No difference in microbial biomass was found between casts and NIS. In this study, a 5-year field experiment was conducted to explore the role of mycorrhizal inoculation and organic fertilizers on the alteration of physical properties of a semi-arid Mediterranean soil (Entic Chromoxerert, Arik clay-loam soil). From 1995 to 1999, wheat ( Triticum aestivum  L.), pepper ( Capsicum annuum  L.), maize ( Zea mays  L.) and wheat were sequentially planted with one of five fertilizers: (1) control, (2) inorganic (160\u201326\u201383\u00a0kg N\u2013P\u2013K\u00a0ha \u22121 ), (3) compost at 25\u00a0t\u00a0ha \u22121 , (4) farm manure at 25\u00a0t\u00a0ha \u22121  and (5) mycorrhiza-inoculated compost at 10\u00a0t\u00a0ha \u22121 . Soil physical properties were significantly affected by organic fertilizers. For soil depths of 0\u201315 and 15\u201330\u00a0cm, mean weight diameter (MWD) was highest under the manure treatment while total porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity were highest under the compost treatment. For a soil depth of 0\u201315\u00a0cm, the compost and manure-treated plots significantly decreased soil bulk density and increased soil organic matter concentration compared with other treatments. Compost and manure treatments increased available water content (AWC) of soils by 86 and 56%, respectively. The effect of inorganic fertilizer treatment on most soil physical properties was insignificant ( P >0.05) compared with the control. Mycorrhizal inoculation+compost was more effective in improving soil physical properties than the inorganic treatment. Although accretion rates and the resulting surface elevation change largely determine the resilience of salt marshes to sea-level rise (SLR), the effect of livestock grazing on accretion rates has been little studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of livestock grazing on salt-marsh accretion rates. We hypothesise that accretion will be lower in grazed compared to ungrazed salt marshes. In four study sites along the mainland coast of the Wadden Sea (in the south-eastern North Sea), accretion rates, sediment deposition rates, and soil compaction of grazed and ungrazed marshes were analysed using the Cs-137 radionuclide dating method. Accretion rates were on average 11.6 mm yr(-1) during recent decades and thus higher than current and projected rates of SLR. Neither accretion nor sediment deposition rates were significantly different between grazing treatments. Meanwhile, soil compaction was clearly affected by grazing with significantly higher dry bulk density on grazed compared to ungrazed parts. Based on these results, we conclude that other factors influence whether grazing has an effect on accretion and sediment deposition rates and that the effect of grazing on marsh growth does not follow a direct causal chain. This study presents the development and validation of a new, highly sensitive method for the quantification of 32 PFAS in human serum using online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). Legacy and emerging PFAS were targeted. Main steps of sample pretreatment include protein precipitation (PP), pellet rinsing, centrifugation, preconcentration through solvent evaporation, and online SPE using a weak anion-exchange polymeric sorbent. The PP and pellet-rinsing procedures were optimized through a comprehensive exploration of solvent combinations. Following this, a pretreatment that offers the best compromise for the targeted PFAS was identified using principal component analysis. The method demonstrated excellent linearity (R\u00b2 = 0.977-0.997) with limits of quantification ranging from 8.9 to 27\u00a0ng/L, 5 to 15 times lower than previous methods. Precision (intraday 2.6-14.0\u00a0% and interday 1.3-11.0\u00a0% relative standard deviation) and accuracy (recoveries 72.7-106\u00a0%) were robust. The method was validated in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and successfully applied to five human serum samples, confirming its suitability for high-throughput profiling of PFAS in biomonitoring studies. To facilitate EU-wide trade of P-containing secondary raw materials such as struvite, the EU issued a revised fertilizer regulation in 2019. A comprehensive overview of the supply of struvite and its quality is presently missing. This study aimed: i) to determine the current EU struvite production volumes, ii) to evaluate all legislated physicochemical characteristics and pathogen content of European struvite against newly set regulatory limits, and iii) to compare not-regulated struvite characteristics. It is estimated that in 2020, between 990 and 1250 ton P are recovered as struvite in the EU. Struvite from 24 European production plants, accounting for 30% of the 80 struvite installations worldwide was sampled. Three samples failed the physicochemical legal limits; one had a P content of <7% and three exceeded the organic carbon content of 3% dry weight (DW). Mineralogical analysis revealed that six samples had a struvite content of 80-90% DW, and 13 samples a content of >90% DW. All samples showed a heavy metal content below the legal limits. Microbiological analyses indicated that struvite may exceed certain legal limits. Differences in morphology and particle size distribution were observed for struvite sourced from digestate (rod shaped; transparent; 82 mass%\u202f<\u202f1\u202fmm), dewatering liquor (spherical; opaque; 65 mass% 1-2\u202fmm) and effluent from upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor processing potato wastewater (spherical; opaque; 51 mass%\u202f<\u202f1\u202fmm and 34 mass%\u202f>\u202f2\u202fmm). We hypothesized that high and diversified biomass-C inputs in CA might be the first step toward to increase SOC in the topsoil by creating the C flow to support C storage overtime. Thus, the aim of this study was to quantify the short-term (i.e., five year) impacts of soil management and cropping systems on soil organic C (SOC), soil total N (STN), particulate organic C (POC) and mineral-associated organic C (MAOC). There were three distinct experiments comprised of a combination of cover and main crops including rice-, soybean- and cassava-based cropping systems, hereafter designated as RcCS, SbCS and CsCS, respectively. The experimental plots were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Soil management treatments included conventional tillage (CT) and no-till (NT) and a selected adjacent area of reference vegetation (RV). Soil sampling was conducted in 2011 and 2013 at seven depths (0\u20135, 5\u201310, 10\u201320, 20\u201340, 40\u201360, 60\u201380 and 80\u2013100\u00a0cm). Soil management and crop sequences significantly affected SOC and STN stocks in all three cropping systems. On average, NT SOC stocks at 0\u20135\u00a0cm depth was greater than those of CT by 10%, 20% and 18% and STN stocks by 8%, 25% and 16% for RcCS, SbCS and CsCS, respectively. SOC levels followed the order RV\u00a0>\u00a0NT\u00a0>\u00a0CT. SOC stocks in the subsoil layers were consistently lower in NT than in CT in all three cropping systems. POC stocks at 0\u20135\u00a0cm depth in NT were on average 22%, 20% and 78% greater than those in CT in RcCS, SbCS and CsCS, respectively. However, significant differences were detected only in RcCS and CsCS. The major POC stocks were found at 0\u201320\u00a0cm depth. NT treatments in SbCS stored 9% greater MAOC stocks at 0\u20135\u00a0cm depth than those in CT, and an increasing trend of NT was observed in RcCS and CsCS. In all three cropping systems, NT systems with diversified crop species significantly increased SOC stocks ranging by 6 to 28% and POC stocks by 56\u2013127% in the surface soils and tended to restore SOC and POC in the subsoil layers after five years. Mineral fertilisation (N, P, K) and plant biomass management (crop residue retention and biomass additions) significantly influenced seed cotton and maize grain yields during the depletion phase. Soil organic carbon declined consistently in all treatments during depletion but remained stable during regeneration. The long-term effect was evident only in seed cotton yield during depletion. In contrast, due to high variability, maize grain yield showed no consistent trend. The combined use of organic resources and mineral fertilisers helped maintain crop productivity but led to declining soil chemical properties in this Ferralsol. The analysis of this outdated yet unpublished dataset shed light on how long-term soil depletion effects persist over time, even when soil fertility management is restored, indicating a sort of \uffe2\uff80\uff98soil memory\uffe2\uff80\uff99. The persistence of these effect suggests that regenerative interventions must begin before critical thresholds of degradation are crossed. In the LUCAS 2018 survey, bulk density has been analysed for three depths, i.e., 0\u201310\u202fcm = 6140 sites; 10\u201320\u202fcm = 5684 sites and 20\u201330\u202fcm =139 sites. The laboratory analysis and the assessment of the results conclude that the bulk density at 10\u201320\u202fcm is 5\u201310% higher compared to 0\u201310\u202fcm for all land uses except woodlands (20%). In the 0\u201320\u202fcm depth, croplands have 1.5 times higher bulk density (mean: 1.26\u202fg\u202fcm\u22123) compared to woodlands (mean: 0.83\u202fg\u202fcm\u22123). The main driver for bulk density variation is the land use which implies that many existing pedotransfer rules have to be developed based on land use. This study applied a methodological framework using an advanced Cubist rule-based regression model to optimize the spatial prediction of bulk density in Europe. We spatialised the circa 6000 LUCAS samples and developed the high-resolution map (100\u202fm) of bulk density for the 0\u201320\u202fcm depth and the maps at 0\u201310 and 10\u201320\u202fcm depth. The modelling results showed a very good prediction (R2: 0.66) of bulk density for the 0\u201320\u202fcm depth which outperforms previous assessments. The bulk density maps can be used to estimate packing density which is a proxy to estimate\u00a0soil compaction. However, this has come at the expense of design complexity that relies strongly on field theory. Here, an ingenious strategy of modular design is proposed to construct subwavelength multifunctional polarization control devices. Chiral metasurfaces with different handedness are first proposed and regarded as modules. The versatile polarization controller can thus be obtained with the combination of different modules. These experiments demonstrate that the well\uffe2\uff80\uff90designed polarization controller possesses reconfigurable functionality, and various broadband polarization and amplitude regulation functions with high efficiency including arbitrary linear polarization rotation, asymmetric transmission effect, neutral\uffe2\uff80\uff90density\uffe2\uff80\uff90like filter, polarization beam splitter, etc., can be readily realized just by changing the cascaded modules. The physical mechanisms of the versatile polarization controller and chiral metasurface modules are both guaranteed by the Fabry\uffe2\uff80\uff93P\uffc3\uffa9rot\uffe2\uff80\uff90like resonances, which are theoretically verified via the transfer matrix method. A versatile nanofabrication process is developed and implemented for highly efficient dielectric and plasmonic mid\uffe2\uff80\uff90infrared metasurfaces with wafer\uffe2\uff80\uff90scale and complementary metal\uffe2\uff80\uff93oxide\uffe2\uff80\uff93semiconductor (CMOS)\uffe2\uff80\uff90compatible manufacturing techniques. The advantages of this method are revealed by demonstrating highly uniform and functional metasurfaces, including high\uffe2\uff80\uff90Q structures enabling fine spectral selectivity, large\uffe2\uff80\uff90area metalenses\uffc2\uffa0with\uffc2\uffa0diffraction\uffe2\uff80\uff90limited focusing capabilities, and birefringent metasurfaces providing polarization control at record\uffe2\uff80\uff90high conversion efficiencies.\uffc2\uffa0 Aluminum plasmonic devices and their integration into microfluidics for real\uffe2\uff80\uff90time and label\uffe2\uff80\uff90free mid\uffe2\uff80\uff90infrared biosensing of proteins and lipid vesicles are further demonstrated. However, little is known about the origin of Mediterranean gypsophiles and the factors affecting their genetic diversity and population structure.</p>METHODS<p>Using phylogenetic and phylogeographic approaches based on microsatellites and sequence data from nuclear and chloroplast regions, we evaluated the divergence time, genetic diversity, and population structure of 27 different populations of the widespread Iberian gypsophile Lepidium subulatum throughout its entire geographic range.</p>RESULTS<p>Lepidium subulatum diverged from its nearest relatives ~3 million years ago, and ITS and psbA/matK trees supported the monophyly of the species. These results suggest that both geological and climatic changes in the region around the Plio\uffe2\uff80\uff90Pleistocene promoted its origin, compared to other evolutionary processes. We found high genetic diversity in both nuclear and chloroplast markers, but a greater population structure in the chloroplast data. These results suggest that while seed dispersal is limited, pollen flow may be favored by the presence of numerous habitat patches that enhance the movement of pollinators.</p>CONCLUSIONS<p>Despite being an edaphic endemic, L. subulatum possesses high genetic diversity probably related to its relatively old age and high population sizes across its range. We surveyed 236 dryland ecosystems from six continents to evaluate the relative importance of aridity and mean annual temperature, and of other abiotic (e.g., texture) and biotic (e.g., plant cover) variables as drivers of SVM, calculated as the averaged coefficient of variation for multiple soil variables linked to nutrient stocks and cycling. We found that increases in temperature and aridity were globally correlated to increases in SVM. Some of these climatic effects on SVM were direct, but others were indirectly driven through reductions in the number of vegetation patches and increases in soil sand content. The predictive capacity of our structural equation\uffc2\uffa0modelling was clearly higher for the spatial variability of N\uffe2\uff80\uff90 than for C\uffe2\uff80\uff90 and P\uffe2\uff80\uff90related soil variables. In the case of N cycling, the effects of temperature and aridity were both direct and indirect via changes in soil properties. For C and P, the effect of climate was mainly indirect via changes in plant attributes. These results suggest that future changes in climate may decouple the spatial availability of these elements for plants and microbes in dryland soils. We then use them to estimate ETAS parameters for California using the earthquake catalog since 1932. To explore how model calibration, inclusion of small events, and accounting for short\uffe2\uff80\uff90term incompleteness affect earthquakes' predictability, we systematically compare variants of ETAS models based on the second approach in pseudo\uffe2\uff80\uff90prospective forecasting experiments for California. Our proposed model significantly outperforms the ETAS null model, with decreasing information gain for increasing target magnitude threshold. We find that the ability to include small earthquakes for simulation of future scenarios is the primary driver of the improvement and that accounting for incompleteness is necessary. Rootstocks are widely used to enhance plants resistance to drought stresses. This study determined influence of rootstock on drought responses in 1\uffe2\uff80\uff90year\uffe2\uff80\uff90old \uffe2\uff80\uff98Gale Gala\uffe2\uff80\uff99 apple trees grafted onto Malus sieversii or M. hupehensis.</p><p>RESULTS: Choice of rootstock resulted in differential response to drought stress. Specifically, M. sieversii caused less drought\uffe2\uff80\uff90induced reduction in relative growth rate, biomass accumulation, leaf area, leaf chlorophyll content, relative water content, photosynthesis rate and maximum chlorophyll fluorescence yield but greater increase in whole\uffe2\uff80\uff90plant water use efficiency compared to M. hupehensis. Secondly, compared with M. hupehensis, M. sieversii caused less drought\uffe2\uff80\uff90induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species but more increase in activities of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, xylem sap abscisic acid concentration was greater in trees grafted onto M. hupehensis than in those grafted onto M. sieversii under drought stress.</p><p>CONCLUSION: \uffe2\uff80\uff98Gale Gala\uffe2\uff80\uff99 trees' response to drought stress was associated with the rootstock's genotype onto which it was grafted. The trial is a long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term field experiment which divides conventional and organic agriculture into component pest\uffe2\uff80\uff90control and soil treatment practices. We hypothesised that management practices would affect soil ecology and used community level physiological profiles, microbial and nematode counts, and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to characterise soil microbial communities in plots used for onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivation.</p>RESULTS<p>Microbial activity and culturable bacterial counts were significantly higher under fully organic management. Culturable fungi, actinomycete and nematode counts showed a consistent trend towards higher numbers under fully organic management but these data were not statistically significant. No differences were found in the fungal/bacterial ratio. DGGE banding patterns and sequencing of excised bands showed clear differences between treatments. Putative onion fungal pathogens were predominantly sequenced under conventional soil treatment practices whilst putative soil suppressive bacterial species were predominantly sequenced from the organic pest\uffe2\uff80\uff90control treatment plots.</p>CONCLUSION<p>Organic management increased microbial activity and diversity. Evaluated with ground\u2010based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) aerosol optical depth (AOD) and data assimilation quality MODerate\u2010resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) retrieval products, the ICAP\u2010MME AOD consensus remains the overall top\u2010scoring and most consistent performer among all models in terms of root\u2010mean\u2010square error (RMSE), bias and correlation for total, fine\u2010 and coarse\u2010mode AODs as well as dust AOD; this is similar to the first ICAP\u2010MME study. Further, over the years, the performance of ICAP\u2010MME is relatively stable and reliable compared to more variability in the individual models. It is therefore essential that the community establishes metric ranges and compositional trends for data comparison with reference samples so that data can be robustly compared among research groups. To this end, four identically prepared DOM samples were each measured by 16 laboratories, using 17 commercially purchased instruments, using positive\uffe2\uff80\uff90ion and negative\uffe2\uff80\uff90ion mode electrospray ionization (ESI) HRMS analyses. The instruments identified ~1000 common ions in both negative\uffe2\uff80\uff90 and positive\uffe2\uff80\uff90ion modes over a wide range of m/z values and chemical space, as determined by van Krevelen diagrams. Calculated metrics of abundance\uffe2\uff80\uff90weighted average indices (H/C, O/C, aromaticity, and m/z) of the commonly detected ions showed that hydrogen saturation and aromaticity were consistent for each reference sample across the instruments, while average mass and oxygenation were more affected by differences in instrument type and settings. In this paper we present 32 metric values for future benchmarking. Here, it is shown that the DCE can be drastically enhanced in a dynamic 1D cavity consisting of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)\uffe2\uff80\uff90based Josephson transmission line with both temporal and spatial modulation on the effective inductance profile through flux\uffe2\uff80\uff90biasing. Such a system can resonantly generate photons at driving frequencies equal to even or odd integer times of that of the fundamental cavity mode governed by the symmetry of the spatial modulation. Interesting spectral and scaling behaviors for photons excited at the band edge are further observed. Chromium oxide showed higher volatilization rates in high p(O2), whereas manganese oxide demonstrated higher volatilization rates in low p(O2). The mechanical reinforcement due to roots against shallow landslides occurs when the fibres intersect the shear surface, usually at depths lower than 2 m. In the literature, the presence of roots is often taken into account by modelling the soil as an equivalent composite material: \u2018the root-permeated soil\u2019, by including an additional cohesion term in the Mohr-Coulomb equation. The models used to estimate the root additional cohesion are presented in the first part of the paper. In some cases, root cohesion is calculated based on the resistant properties of the fibres and assuming an order for the progressive roots failure, either breaking, slipping out or buckling. On the other hand, some authors used structural models of the roots investigating not only the stresses in the roots, but also in the surrounding soil to obtain a better estimation of the root cohesion. In the second part of the paper, the calculation of the root reinforcement is used to assess the safety factor (SF) of the slope. To determine the temporal dynamics and physiological significance of root, xylem and leaf ABA and ACC concentrations in response to deficit irrigation (DI) or partial rootzone drying (PRD-F) and re-watering, these variables were measured in plants exposed to similar whole pot soil water contents. Both DI and PRD-F plants received only a fraction of the irrigation supplied to well-watered (WW) plants, either to all (DI) or part (PRD-F) of the rootzone of plants grown in split-pots. Both DI and PRD-F induced partial stomatal closure, increased root ABA and ACC accumulation consistent with local soil water content, but did not affect xylem or leaf concentrations of these compounds compared to WW plants. Two hours after re-watering all (DI-RW) or part of the rootzone (PRD-A) to the same soil water content, stomatal conductance returned to WW values or further decreased respectively. Re-watering the whole rootzone had no effect on xylem and leaf ABA and ACC concentrations, while re-watering the dry side of the pot in PRD plants had no effect on xylem and leaf ABA concentrations but increased xylem and leaf ACC concentrations and leaf ethylene evolution. Leaf water potential was similar between all irrigation treatments, with stomatal conductance declining as xylem ABA concentrations and leaf ACC concentrations increased. Prior to re-watering PRD plants, accounting for the spatial differences in soil water uptake best explained variation in xylem ACC concentration suggesting root-to-shoot ACC signalling, but this model did not account for variation in xylem ACC concentration after re-watering the dry side of PRD plants. A comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted using 55 studies with 628 soil profiles under temperate, humid, sub-humid, tropical and semi-arid conditions, to compare SOC stocks in the topsoil of non-degraded and degraded grassland soils. Grassland degradation significantly reduced SOC stocks by 16% in dry climates ( 1000 mm) and Asia was the most affected continent (\u221223.7%). Moreover, the depletion of SOC stock induced by degradation was more pronounced in sandy (<20% clay) soils with a high SOC depletion of 10% compared to 1% in clayey (\u226532% clay) soils. Furthermore, grassland degradation significantly reduced SOC by 14% in acidic soils (pH \u2264 5), while SOC changes were negligible for higher pH. Assuming that 30% of grasslands worldwide are degraded, the amount of SOC likely to be lost would be 4.05 Gt C, with a 95% confidence between 1.8 and 6.3 Gt C (i.e. from 1.2 to 4.2% of the whole grassland soil stock). Although negative impact of species loss has been documented, the evidence concerning its impact on ecosystem stability is still limited. Here, we studied the effects of declining species and functional diversity on plant community responses to drought in the field (open to weed colonization) and greenhouse conditions. Both species and functional diversity positively affected the average yields of field communities. However, this pattern was similar in both drought-stressed and control plots. No effect of diversity on community resistance, biomass recovery after drought and resilience was found because drought reduced biomass production similarly at each level of diversity by approximately 30%. The use of dissimilarity (characterized by Euclidean distance) revealed higher variation under changing environments (drought-stressed vs. control) in more diverse communities compared to less species-rich assemblages. In the greenhouse experiment, the effect of species diversity affected community resistance, indicating that more diverse communities suffered more from drought than species-poor ones. We conclude that our study did not support the insurance hypothesis (stability properties of a community should increase with species richness) because species diversity had an equivocal effect on ecosystem resistance and resilience in an environment held under non-weeded practice, regardless of the positive relationship between sown species diversity and community biomass production. Plant development, physiology, and expression of plant genes expected to be modulated by AM symbiosis, drought, and ABA were studied. Results showed that only wild-type tomato plants responded positively to mycorrhizal inoculation, while AM symbiosis was not observed to have any effect on plant development in sitiens plants grown under well-watered conditions. The application of ABA to sitiens plants enhanced plant growth both under well-watered and drought stress conditions. In respect to sitiens plants subjected to drought stress, the addition of ABA had a cumulative effect in relation to that of inoculation with G. intraradices. Most of the genes analyzed in this study showed different regulation patterns in wild-type and sitiens plants, suggesting that their gene expression is modulated by the plant ABA phenotype. In the same way, the colonization of roots with the AM fungus G. intraradices differently regulated the expression of these genes in wild-type and in sitiens plants, which could explain the distinctive effect of the symbiosis on each plant ABA phenotype. In the present paper, we highlight the issues of using various experimental approaches to study the cavitation bubble phenomenon and its effects. We scrutinize the transients bubble generation mechanisms behind tension-based and energy deposition-based techniques and overview the physics behind the bubble production. Four vapor bubble generation methods, which are most commonly used in single bubble research, are directly compared in this study: the pulsed laser technique, a high- and low-voltage spark discharge and the tube arrest method. Important modifications to the experimental techniques are implemented, demonstrating improvement of the bubble production range, control and repeatability. Results are compared to other similar techniques from the literature, and an extensive report on the topic is given in the scope of this work. Simple-to-implement techniques are presented and categorized herein, in order to help with future experimental design.
