These complex microbial consortia may include microbial spoilers, pathogens, as well as beneficial microbes. Advances in sequencing technologies and metagenomics provide the opportunity to map the environmental microbiome in food industries at an unprecedented depth, highlighting the importance of the resident microbial communities in influencing food quality and safety, as well as the main factors shaping its composition and activities. However, specific technical issues must be considered. However, little is known about the nitrate accumulation in this plant. A high nitrate level in vegetables can indirectly lead to an elevated intake of nitrites and N-nitroso compounds, increasing the risk of diseases for humans and animals. This research hypothesizes that the nitrate accumulation of Lemna minor differs between growing media. Additionally, it evaluates whether legal safety levels of nitrate for human and animal intake are exceeded. The duckweed was grown on (i) rainwater, and (ii) three synthetic media containing different nutrient levels. Furthermore, (iii) biological effluent of swine manure treatment and (iv) aquaculture effluent from pikeperch production were used, as these are potential media for closing nutrient loops in the agriculture sector. It was found that nitrate levels increased with the increasing availability of macronutrients in the water, and pH showed a particularly strong negative correlation with the nitrate levels in the plant. Nevertheless, nitrate content never exceeded 530 mg NO3 kg-1 fresh weight. To conclude, Lemna minor's nitrate content was below safety limits for human consumption in all tested growing media; however, a potential risk for ruminants was observed as these are more sensitive to nitrate conversions in their gastro-intestinal track.
Agriculture and Food Sciences", "0106 biological sciences", "0301 basic medicine", "SAMPLES", "Wastewater", "NUTRIENTS", "01 natural sciences", "Food safety", "BIOMASS", "03 medical and health sciences", "Crude protein", "Vegetables", "Lemnaceae", "Animals", "Araceae", "Humans", "Toxicology and Mutagenesis", "PLANT", "FRUITS", "VEGETABLES", "2. This interest is driven by the need of a more sustainable economy and a lower dependency on fossil fuels. In this frame, the replacement of synthetic additives with natural compounds in polymer commodities is progressively taking place. Additionally, according to forecasts, the production of bio-plastics will grow exponentially in the near future. However, these materials may exhibit poor physical and mechanical properties regarding processability and end-use, which can limit their potential for applications. Therefore, academic and industrial communities are pushing their interest in fully bio-based formulations with improved performance, and tailored for specific applications, ranging from packaging to biomedicine. This review presents the most recent advances in research and development of bio-based functional additives for polymeric materials. For each type of additive, both the scientific fundamentals and the technological aspects are encompassed, with an emphasis on the current commercially available bio-based additives and their role in market uptake of environmentally friendly products. Here, we investigate the existence of this layer during erosion events recorded in Iceland and Jordan. Size￢ﾀﾐresolved dust fluxes were estimated at three levels between 2 and 4ￂﾠm using the eddy￢ﾀﾐcovariance method. Dust fluxes were found mainly constant only between the two upper levels in Iceland, the lower dust flux being often stronger and richer in coarse particles, while dust fluxes in Jordan were nearly constant across all levels. The wind dynamics could not explain the absence of a constant dust flux layer in Iceland. We show that the presence of stationary dust source patches in Iceland, related to surface humidity, created a non￢ﾀﾐuniform dust layer near the surface, named dust roughness sublayer (DRSL), where individual plumes behind each patch interact but do not fully mix. The lowest dust measurement level was probably located within this sublayer while the upper ones were located above, such that there the emitted dust became spatially well￢ﾀﾐmixed. This explains near the surface in Iceland, the more intermittent dust concentration, its low correlation with the dust concentrations above, and the richer dust flux in coarse particles due to their lower deposition contribution. Our findings highlight the importance of estimating dust fluxes above a dust blending height whose characteristics depend on the dust source patchiness caused by surface humidity or the presence of sparse non￢ﾀﾐerosive elements.</p
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "Aeolian erosion events", "550", "dust flux", "Soil wind erosion", "Ensure access to affordable", " reliable", " sustainable and modern energy for all", "Dust flux layer", "0207 environmental engineering", "02 engineering and technology", "Constant flux layer", "Àrees temàtiques de la UPC::Enginyeria agroalimentària::Ciències de la terra i de la vida", "551", "01 natural sciences", "Make cities and human settlements inclusive", " safe", " resilient and sustainable", "Dust flux", "Simulació per ordinador", "Atmospheric surface layer", "size distribution", "Climate science", "500 Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik::550 Geowissenschaften", " Geologie::551 Geologie", " Hydrologie", " Meteorologie", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/550", "ddc:550", "Size distribution", "15. However, energy use continues to rise and food production requires fuel inputs, which have increased with intensification. Focussing on the question of food or fuel is thus not helpful. The bigger, more pertinent, challenge is how the increasing demands for food and energy can be met in the future, particularly when water and land availability will be limited. Energy crop production systems differ greatly in environmental impact. The use of high-input food crops for liquid transport fuels (first-generation biofuels) needs to be phased out and replaced by the use of crop residues and low-input perennial crops (second/advanced-generation biofuels) with multiple environmental benefits. These effects will vary as a function of plant species, and plastic type, and thus are likely to translate to changes in plant community composition and perhaps primary production. Our mechanistic framework serves to guide ongoing and future research on this important topic.

2. Spatial development (zoning) was for some scenarios restricted in high productive fields. The model results give probabilities (0 – 1) of urban development within the 1 km² cells. Based on these probability percentages the different soil functions are reduced (100% of the probability and 50% of the probability) compared to the current soil functioning and, for the 50% scenarios, partly replaced by low productive grasslands as gardens and other public greenery. Z-scores are calculated from the spatial SF maps for each of the environmental zones. These environmental zones are derived from the Metzger et al. (2013). The z-scores give the signed fractional number of standard deviations by which SF means for an environmental zone are above or below the mean value and allow us indicate which areas have a higher or lower soil function performance compared to the mean value. Z-scores from the current SF maps and scenario maps were then compared to each other to calculate the change in z-scores. This change in z-scores is given in the shapefiles and describes the relative change in soil function performance. Positive values indicate an improvement in soil functioning compared to the current situation, negative values a decrease. The meat-processing industry and research institutions are evaluating different strategies to overcome the elevated salt concentrations in products without a quality reduction. Several properties could be directly or indirectly affected by a sodium chloride decrease. Among them, microbial stability could be shifted towards pathogen growth, posing a serious public health threat. Nonetheless, the majority of the literature available focuses attention on the sensorial and technological challenges that salt reduction implies. Thereafter, the need to discuss the consequences for shelf-life and microbial safety should be considered. Three pilot-scale systems were monitored for nine weeks under outdoor conditions in Flanders. The systems were fed with a mixture of the liquid fraction and the biological effluent of a swine manure treatment system diluted with rainwater in order that the weekly N and P addition was equal to the N and P removal by the system. The design tested the accumulation of elements in a continuous recirculation system. Potassium, Cl, S, Ca, and Mg were abundantly available in the swine manure wastewaters and tended to accumulate, being a possible cause of concern for long-operating recirculation systems. The harvested duckweed was characterised for its mineral composition and protein content. In animal husbandry, trace elements are specifically added to animal feed as micronutrients and, thus, feedstuffs biofortified with essential trace elements can provide added value. Duckweed grown on the tested mixture of swine manure waste streams could be considered as a source of Mn, Zn, and Fe for swine feed, while it is not a source of Cu for swine feed. Moreover, it was observed that As, Cd, and Pb content were below the limits of the feed Directive 2002/32/EC in the duckweed grown on the tested medium. Overall, these results demonstrate that duckweed can effectively remove nutrients from agriculture wastewaters in a recirculated system while producing a feed source with a protein content of 35% DM.

Agriculture and Food Sciences", "CONSTRUCTED WETLAND", "mineral supplements", "01 natural sciences", "Article", "BIOMASS", "12. These impacts are sensitive to the dust’s mineralogical, chemical, and physical properties. However, comprehensive measurements and analyses of Icelandic dust particles remain limited. This study examines dust samples collected during a field campaign in the Dyngjusandur desert (August–September 2021) using active and passive aerosol sampling. Characterizing physico-chemical properties of dust-emitting sediments in arid regions is fundamental to understand the effect of dust on climate and ecosystems. For high-latitude dust (HLD), this knowledge is scarce. This study focuses on the particle size distribution (PSD), mineralogy, cohesion, iron (Fe) mode of occurrence and Visible Near Infra-Red (VNIR) reflectance spectra of dust-emitting sediments from dust-hotspots in Iceland (HLD region). Extensive analysis was conducted on top sediments collected from seven dust-sources and an intensive at Jokulsá basin including top sediments, sediments and aeolian ripples. Fully and minimally dispersed PSDs evidenced remarkable similarities with an average median diameter of 56±69 and 55±62 µm. Mineralogical analyses showed the prevalence of amorphous phases (68±26 %), feldspars (17±13 %), and pyroxenes (9.3±7.2 %), aligned with the reflectance spectra. Fe content reached 9.5±0.40 wt %, mainly in silicate structures (80±6.3 %), complemented by magnetite (16±5.5 %), hematite/goethite (4.5±2.7 %), and readily exchangeable Fe-ions or Fe nano-oxides (1.6±0.63 %). Icelandic top sediments have coarser PSD compared to the high dust-emitting crusts from mid-latitude arid regions, distinctive mineralogy, and threefold bulk Fe content, with a large presence of magnetite. The congruence between fully and minimally dispersed PSDs underscores a reduced particle aggregation and cohesion of Icelandic top sediments, suggesting that aerodynamic entrainment of dust may also play a role upon emission in this region, aside of saltation bombardment. The analysis of an extensive sampling in Dyngjusandur allowed this study to present a conceptual model to encapsulate Iceland's rapidly evolving high dust-emitting environments.

550", "QC1-999", "Iron", "Iceland", "Reflectance", "01 natural sciences", "Àrees temàtiques de la UPC::Desenvolupament humà i sostenible::Enginyeria ambiental", "Make cities and human settlements inclusive", " safe", " resilient and sustainable", "Physicochemical property", "11. A novel reference absorption instrument based on photothermal interferometry – the dual-wavelength photothermal aerosol absorption monitor PTAAM-2λ – and scattering measurements are used to characterize filter photometer artifacts in measurements of absorption coefficients of soot- and dust-dominated aerosol samples within laboratory and ambient campaigns. We provide, for different aerosol types, reference values of the multiple-scattering parameter, quantifying the artifact introduced by the interaction between the light, the particles, and the filter. The Aethalometer AE33 and the Continuous Light Absorption Photometer (CLAP) were characterized during a laboratory campaign where different soot and mineral dust samples were measured. Furthermore, ambient measurements during a campaign in Granada, Spain, were used to characterize the AE33 and MAAP (Multiangle Absorption Photometer), a pseudo-reference absorption instrument. The laboratory campaign showed significant wavelength dependence of the calibration parameter, the multiple-scattering parameter C. The C of the AE33 at 450 and 808 nm was 4.08 and 3.95 and 6.25 and 5.27 for propane soot and diesel soot, respectively. For the CLAP, the C was 5.10 and 4.26 and 6.79 and 5.80 for propane and diesel soot, respectively. For the different mineral dust samples analyzed in the laboratory, the C at 450 nm ranged between 2.74 and 3.03 for the AE33 and between 2.50 and 2.80 for the CLAP. The ambient measurements at Granada showed an overall C of 4.72 at 450 nm and of 3.90 at 808 nm for the AE33. The results for both the AE33 and the CLAP show a dependence with the particle size, with fine particles having the highest C values and with the C being reduced and leveling off for larger particles. Both the laboratory and the ambient measurements of the AE33 showed overlapping results. The cross-sensitivity to scattering was smaller for the CLAP than for the AE33. This paper presents a KPI for safe urban roads that was developed and tested in the European Trendline project. Based on discussions with 18 experts from 8 countries, it was decided to start with the basic indicator ‘Share of 30 km/h road length of the total length of urban roads’ which was tested in five pilot countries using available local, national and international (GIS) databases. The share of 30 km/h roads appeared to differ considerably between the pilot countries, ranging from less than 1% in the city of Silistra in Bulgaria to 73% in the Netherlands. The pilots showed that it is possible to calculate the KPI, although it is important to check the quality of the speed limit data and there will be some differences in selections due to data availability and local context. Also the use of additional indicators related to the concept of safe speeds was explored in the pilots. The calculation of these indicators appeared to be more challenging and further research is recommended to further develop these additional KPIs.

Transportation engineering", "TA1001-1280", "SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being", "30km/h", "cyclist safety", "safe speed", "SPI", "30 km/h", "Transportation and communications", "SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities", "HE1-9990", "KPI
https://doi.org/10.55329/yxna7190"},

["Environmental Sciences & Ecology", "01 natural sciences", "12.

550", "QC1-999", "Iron", "Iceland", "Reflectance", "http://metadata.un.org/sdg/3", "01 natural sciences", "Àrees temàtiques de la UPC::Desenvolupament humà i sostenible::Enginyeria ambiental", "Make cities and human settlements inclusive", " safe", " resilient and sustainable", "Physicochemical property", "11. female HER2+ BC patients who received NCT plus H with or without P were included in this retrospective real-life study. Primary endpoint was pCR rate (ypT0/Tis ypN0). Clinicopathological characteristics, event-free survival (EFS) time, and relapse rates were evaluated with respect to HER2 blockade (NCT-H vs. NCT-HP) and pCR.Overall, 62.2% of patients received NCT-H and 37.8% received NCT-HP. NCT-HP was associated with a significantly higher pCR rate (66.4 vs. 56.8%, p < 0.001) and lower relapse (4.5 vs. 12.2%, p < 0.001) in comparison to NCT-H. Patients with pCR had a significantly lower relapse (5.6 vs. 14.9%, p < 0.001) and longer EFS time (mean(SE) 111.2(1.9) vs. 93.9(2.7) months, p < 0.001) compared to patients with non-pCR. Patients in the NCT-HP group were more likely to receive docetaxel (75.0 vs. 40.6%, p < 0.001), while those with pCR were more likely to receive paclitaxel (50.2 vs. 40.7%, p < 0.001) and NCT-HP (41.5 vs. 32.1%, p < 0.001). Hormone receptor status and breast conservation rates were similar in NCT-HP vs. NCT-H groups and in patients with vs. without pCR. Invasive ductal carcinoma (OR, 2.669, 95% CI 1.596 to 4.464, p < 0.001), lower histological grade of the tumor (OR, 4.052, 95% CI 2.446 to 6.713, p < 0.001 for grade 2 and OR, 3.496, 95% CI 2.020 to 6.053, p < 0.001 for grade 3), lower T stage (OR, 1.959, 95% CI 1.411 to 2.720, p < 0.001) and paclitaxel (vs. docetaxel, OR, 1.571, 95% CI 1.127 to 2.190, p = 0.008) significantly predicted the pCR.This real-life study indicates that adding P to NCT-H enables higher pCR than NCT-H in HER2+ BC, while pCR was associated with lower relapse and better EFS time.
neoadjuvant treatment", "Pathological Complete Response", "Efficacy", "Paclitaxel", "Receptor", " ErbB-2", "HER2 protein positive", "Breast Neoplasms", "event-free survival", "Docetaxel", "Neosphere", "breast cancer", "pertuzumab", "Breast Cancer", "Antineoplastic Combined Chemotherapy Protocols", "Humans", "Relapse", "Neoadjuvant Treatment", "Retrospective Studies", "relapse", "Pertuzumab", "real-word evidence", "HER2 Protein Positive", "Cardiac Safety", "Controlled Superiority Trial", "Real-Wordevidence", "Trastuzumab", "Adjuvant Trastuzumab", "Her2 Protein Positive", "Neoadjuvant Therapy", "3. The major global challenge is how to provide enough food for everyone, that is safe, ample and produced in a sustainable way. In regard to food safety, large-scale epidemics of foodborne diseases are a persistent threat to public health, as the number of food- and waterborne diseases significantly increases year by year, resulting in the on-going global public health issue. Foodand waterborne microbiological pathogens can be found in a variety of foodstuffs, and their early detection is extremely important to increase overall food safety, and to prevent enormous economic losses. The problems with health-unsafe food in the last 20 years, and a related rise in food poisoning cases internationally, have led to a growing and urgent demand for safe food products that will not pose a danger to consumers. On the other hand, it is equally important to ensure the absence of microbiological pathogens in the whole process of food production e.g. during crop cultivation where it is very important to perform early detection of pathogens to prevent their further spread and avoid the negative effects on yield and quality of crops or during food processing and storage. Classical microbiological cultivation methods are still considered the 'gold standard' in detection of different types of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, pathogenic fungi) during quality analysis, due to their sensitivity, relative low cost and ability to generate qualitative and quantitative information regarding the number and nature of microorganisms of a different origin. However, what is considered perhaps the biggest drawback of these methods is the fact that they require at least 3-4 days to get the first results, and even up to 7 days for confirmatory results. In addition, there are pathogens that cannot be cultivated i.e., so-called viable but non-culturable - VBNC pathogens that do not have the ability to form visible colonies, which further hinders the ability to use classical microbiological cultivation methods for their detection. Application of polymerase chain reaction, i.e. PCR, changed the way microbiological analyses are performed in the direction of detecting specific microbial DNA as a target. PCR-based methods that detect pathogen-derived nucleic acids are faster (last up to several hours), very reliable and allow the analysis of VBNC pathogens. However, these techniques depend on precise instruments, clean working conditions and hence, cannot be used in the field. In addition, PCR can give falsepositive or false-negative results due to the use of nonspecific primers or to the lack of differentiation between nucleic acids of the living (active) and dead (inactive) cells. To address these challenges, the primary focus of this doctoral dissertation is on development and optimization of innovative nucleic acid based methods for rapid detection of pathogens in food and water. More specifically, the research focus of the dissertation is the application of the isothermal loop-mediated amplification (LAMP) method, which allows for fast, simple, and reliable field detection. This approach for detection of pathogens in food of animal and plant origin and in the environment corresponds to the “One health” paradigm, recommended by the FAO, that is encompassing methods of optimizing the health and well-being of people, animals, plants and environment. In line with this, the primary objectives (O) of this doctoral dissertation have been formulated as follows: O1) To perform advanced development of the LAMP method for research and potential practical purposes in order to detect pathogens in different complex matrices comprising foodstuffs (meat and vegetable), water, and soil-like matrix; O2) to determine applicability of the LAMP method for river water quality assessment as advised by the One health paradigm; O3) to improve and optimize procedures for nucleic acid (NA) isolation in order to enable rapid extraction in the field conditions and O4) comparison of the efficiency of the developed LAMP protocols versus both the conventional cultivation methods and the PCR method as the “gold standard” for NA amplification-based analyses. O1 formulated in the above described way comprises O1.1) establishing clearly defined protocols for LAMP detection of bacterial pathogens in various food matrices using Klebsiella aerogenes species as a model system; The protocol development includes de novo design of the specific primers, and O1.2) developing LAMP protocol for early detection of pathogenic fungi Trichoderma spp. in soil-like matrix. The protocol development includes de novo design of the specific primers. Final protocol includes implementation of colorimetric detection of the LAMP products using gold nanoparticles, thereby increasing the technology readiness level (TRL) for real-life application of the developed protocol. O2 focuses on evaluating the potential application of the LAMP method in detecting fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), such as E. coli, for river water quality assessment. O3 deals with enhancing extraction protocols for rapid DNA isolation O3.1.1) from the foodstuffs and O3.1.2) from soil-like real-life samples (Chelex 100 method) and O3.2) from highly contaminated river water samples (a syringe-based DNA isolation method) and provides evaluation of developed protocols for application in the field conditions. O4 aims to provide conclusions on the applicability of developed LAMP protocols for use in early detection of pathogens of bacterial and fungal origin, in field conditions. The key conclusions derived from the research conducted in this dissertation are that the LAMP method has been successfully optimized for the specific detection of K. aerogenes and Trichoderma spp. in various types of real-life samples. Additionally, the LAMP protocol development included design of novel LAMP primers for both K. aerogenes and Trichoderma spp. as the primer sequences for these pathogens were not found in the literature. The developed LAMP procedures using novel primers are characterized by high sensitivity and low detection limits for all tested samples, as well as with better efficiency compared to the PCR method. These aspects confirm the significant potential of the LAMP method as a diagnostic tool for pathogen detection. Additionally, the field application of the LAMP method combined with the Chelex 100 method for DNA isolation enables practical use of the developed LAMP protocols under various conditions. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the LAMP method can also be used for detecting E. coli in complex samples such as highly contaminated water, positioning the LAMP method as a very good tool for application following the One Health approach. Notably, the protocols for both LAMP and DNA extraction procedures developed within this thesis still require further increase in TRL before commercial field applications. Taking all of the above into account, this dissertation represents a significant contribution to the research on molecular detection methods and development of innovative diagnostic tools for enhancing food and water safety, that can be of significant importance in addressing the global challenge of ensuring safe food and sustainable environment for the growing population. Further research and application of these methods may greatly contribute to food poisoning prevention, public health and environmental management, as defined in the “One health” agenda.
LAMP; isothermal method; nucleic acids; detection of pathogenic microorganisms; food safety; food security; field detection
https://doi.org/21.15107/rcub_nardus_23157
Open AccessThis dataset is part of Deliverable and 5.3 and produced by the WP4 team of the Landmark H2020 project.
