Graphene-based devices are fabricated via large-scale technology, allowing for upscaling the sensor fabrication and lowering the device cost. The sensor assembly was performed through covalent bonding of graphene\uffe2\uff80\uff99s surface with an aptamer specifically sensitive towards OTA. The results demonstrate fast (within 5 min) response to OTA exposure with a linear range of detection between 4 ng/mL and 10 pg/mL, with a detection limit of 4 pg/mL. The regeneration time constant of the sensor was found to be rather small, only 5.6 s, meaning fast sensor regeneration for multiple usages. The high reproducibility of the sensing response was demonstrated via using several recycling procedures as well as various GFETs. The applicability of the aptasensor to real samples was demonstrated for spiked red wine samples with recovery of about 105% for a 100 pM OTA concentration; the selectivity of the sensor was also confirmed via addition of another toxin, zearalenone. The meta-trench is a novel device, composed of an array of resonant units buried in the ground in a proper arrangement, aimed at reducing the railway and/or subway induced ground motion by exploiting its scattering and resonant properties. Compared to classical open trenches, the resonators contribute to improving the wave mitigation performance of the trench in the low-frequency regime.The proposed formulation allows to consider the wave source anywhere in the half-space and a generic distribution of resonators in terms of number and position. The incident wave field generated by the source, such as a train or subway, along with the scattered wave fields produced by the resonant units that constitute the meta-trench, are modeled via Green's functions. The multiple scattering formulation enables the solution of coupled wave problems by determining the amplitudes of scattered wave fields at various frequencies. Through comparison with finite element simulations, we demonstrate that in both buried source (i.e., subway) and surface-located source (i.e., ground railway) scenarios, our analytical formulation is able to properly model the dynamics of the coupled problems with a noticeable computational cost saving. Indeed, process and technological limitations have made HPC uncompetitive with respect to consolidated processes/technologies so far. In this manuscript, these issues are critically discussed and reviewed with the aim of providing the reader with a realistic picture of the prospective application of HPC in wastewater treatment. Accordingly, consolidated and new photocatalysts (among which the visible active ones are attracting increasing interest among the scientific community), along with preparation methods, are reviewed to understand whether, with increased process efficiency, these methods can be realistically and competitively developed at industrial scale. Precipitation is considered as an attractive method for photocatalyst preparation at the industrial scale; sol-gel and ultrasound may be feasible only if no expensive metal precursor is used, while hydrothermal and solution combustion synthesis are expected to be difficult (expensive) to scale up. The application of HPC in urban and industrial wastewater treatment and possible energy recovery by hydrogen production are discussed in terms of current limitations and future prospects. Despite the fact that HPC has been studied for the removal of pollutants in aqueous matrices for two decades, its use in wastewater treatment is still at a 'technological research' stage. In order to accelerate the adoption of HPC at full scale, it is advisable to focus on investigations under real conditions and on developing/improving pilot-scale reactors to better investigate scale-up conditions and the potential to successfully address specific challenges in wastewater treatment through HPC. However, translating this technology to practical applications requires low\uffe2\uff80\uff90cost and high\uffe2\uff80\uff90throughput fabrication methods. Due to the limited choice of materials with suitable optical properties, it is particularly challenging to produce metasurfaces for the technologically relevant mid\uffe2\uff80\uff90infrared spectral range. These constraints are overcome by realizing functional metasurfaces on almost completely transparent free\uffe2\uff80\uff90standing metal\uffe2\uff80\uff90oxide membranes. A versatile nanofabrication process is developed and implemented for highly efficient dielectric and plasmonic mid\uffe2\uff80\uff90infrared metasurfaces with wafer\uffe2\uff80\uff90scale and complementary metal\uffe2\uff80\uff93oxide\uffe2\uff80\uff93semiconductor (CMOS)\uffe2\uff80\uff90compatible manufacturing techniques. Here, the first single\uffe2\uff80\uff90walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bio\uffe2\uff80\uff90optoelectronic transistor enabled by the site\uffe2\uff80\uff90specific direct interfacing with a green fluorescent protein (GFP) via genetically encoded phenyl azide photochemistry is reported. The electrical behavior of individual semiconducting SWCNTs depends on the protein residue coupling site and provides the basis to design eco\uffe2\uff80\uff90friendly phototransistors and optoelectronic memory. Attachment at one GFP residue proximal to the chromophore produces a wavelength\uffe2\uff80\uff90specific phototransistor. The bio\uffe2\uff80\uff90transistor can be switched off in less than 38 s with responsivity up to 7 \uffc3\uff97 103 A W\uffe2\uff88\uff921 at 470\uffc2\uffa0nm. Attachment via a second residue distal to the chromophore generates optoelectronic memory that show rapid and reproducible conductivity switching with up to 15\uffe2\uff80\uff90fold modulation that is restored on the application of a gate voltage. Switching the phase\uffe2\uff80\uff90change material between its amorphous and crystalline structural state enables nearly full dynamic light phase control with high transmittance in the mid\uffe2\uff80\uff90IR spectrum. The metasurface is realized experimentally, showing post\uffe2\uff80\uff90fabrication tuning of the light phase within a range of 81% of the full 2\uffcf\uff80 phase shift. Additionally, the versatility of the tunable Huygen's metasurfaces is demonstrated by optically programming the spatial light phase distribution of the metasurface with single meta\uffe2\uff80\uff90unit precision and retrieving high\uffe2\uff80\uff90resolution phase\uffe2\uff80\uff90encoded images using hyperspectral measurements. Morphological and chemical characterization of the nanocrystals obtained, as well as the main functional properties of the poly(ethylene terephthalate) coated films, showed quite similar characteristics and performances of CNCs obtained from pure cellulose raw material (cotton linters) and the nanoparticles produced from a potential discard of paper making processes (kraft pulp). In particular, the gas barrier properties of the coating produced with CNCs obtained from kraft pulp were very promising, providing oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability values hundreds of times lower than those of equal thickness in comparison with common barrier synthetic polymers, over a broad range of temperatures. Computational studies on model graphene clusters are carried out to elucidate the effect of N\uffe2\uff80\uff90site homogeneity on the reaction pathway. Calculations show that for pure NG\uffe2\uff80\uff90doping or NP\uffe2\uff80\uff90doping of model graphene clusters, adsorption of hydroperoxide and hydroperoxyl radical intermediates, respectively, is weak, thus favoring desorption prior to complete 4e\uffe2\uff80\uff90reduction to hydroxide. LDHs might serve as support and stabiliser materials for selected oxidising agents during injection, as the uncontrolled reaction and consumption might be inhibited, and guarantee that the selected oxidants persist in the subsurface after injection. In this study, LDHs with hydrotalcite- and hydrocalumite-like structures intercalated with permanganate and peroxydisulphate anions were synthesised and their efficiency was tested in batch experiments using trichloroethene or 1,1,2-trichloroethane as the target contaminants. All samples were characterised using powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis coupled with mass spectrometry to directly analyse evolving gases, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Additionally, particle size distribution measurements were carried out on the synthesised materials. Results of the batch experiments confirmed the hypothesis that oxidising agents keep their properties after intercalation. Permanganate intercalated LDHs proved to be most efficient at degrading trichloroethene while peroxydisulphate intercalated Ca,Al-LDHs were the most promising studied reactants degrading 1,1,2-trichloroethane. Four vapor bubble generation methods, which are most commonly used in single bubble research, are directly compared in this study: the pulsed laser technique, a high- and low-voltage spark discharge and the tube arrest method. Important modifications to the experimental techniques are implemented, demonstrating improvement of the bubble production range, control and repeatability. Results are compared to other similar techniques from the literature, and an extensive report on the topic is given in the scope of this work. Simple-to-implement techniques are presented and categorized herein, in order to help with future experimental design. Thermal stability and elongation at break of biocomposites were reduced with increasing contents of ViSh particles (10, 20 and 30\uffc2\uffa0wt%), while Young\uffe2\uff80\uff99s modulus and water vapor permeability were increased. It was shown that a surface gas-phase esterification allowed to significantly increase the hydrophobicity of ViSh particles (increase of water contact angles from 59\uffc2\uffb0 to 114\uffc2\uffb0), leading to a reduction of 27% in the water vapor permeability of the biocomposite filled with 30\uffc2\uffa0wt% of ViSh. The overall mechanical performance was not impacted by gas-phase esterification, demonstrating that the interfacial adhesion between the virgin ViSh particles and the PHBV matrix was already good and that such filler surface treatment was not required in that case. For that purpose, a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of a rigid tray made of virgin poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) PHBV, polylactic acid (PLA) or polypropylene (PP), and increasing content of ViSh particles was performed. The contribution of each processing step in the life cycle on the different environmental impacts was identified and discussed. Furthermore, the balance between the environmental and the economic benefits of composite trays was discussed.</p>Methods<p>This work presents a cradle-to-grave LCA of composite rigid trays. Once collected in vineyards, ViShs were dried and ground using dry fractionation processes, then mixed with a polymer matrix by melt extrusion to produce compounds that were finally injected to obtain rigid trays for food packaging. The density of each component was taken into account in order to compare trays with the same volume. The maximum filler content was set to 30 vol% according to recommendations from literature and industrial data. The ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint Hierarchist (H) methodology was used for the assessment using the cutoff system model.</p>Results and discussion<p>This study showed that bioplastics are currently less eco-friendly than PP. This is in part due to the fact that LCA does not account for, in existing tools, effects of microplastic accumulation and that bioplastic technologies are still under development with low tonnage. This study also demonstrated the environmental interest of the development of biocomposites by the incorporation of ViSh particles. The minimal filler content of interest depended on the matrices and the impact categories. Concerning global warming, composite trays had less impact than virgin plastic trays from 5 vol% for PHBV or PLA and from 20 vol% for PP. Concerning PHBV, the only biodegradable polymer in natural conditions in this study, the price and the impact on global warming are reduced by 25% and 20% respectively when 30 vol% of ViSh are added.</p>Conclusion<p>The benefit of using vine shoots in composite materials from an environmental and economical point of view was demonstrated. As a recommendation, the polymer production step, which constitutes the most important impact, should be optimized and the maximum filler content in composite materials should be increased.</p>", "keywords": ["2. Four different formulations of the HAP treatment were tested and compared to ammonium oxalate and ethyl silicate (widely used in the practice of marble conservation). The treatments were applied onto pre-weathered and unweathered specimens to investigate their ability to arrest and prevent bowing, respectively. Marble behavior was studied in terms of residual strain and bowing after thermal cycles up to 90\u00a0\u00b0C in dry and wet conditions. Marble cohesion was assessed before and after the thermal cycles by ultrasound. The HAP treatments exhibited promising results, as the residual strain and the bowing after the cycles were always lower or equal to the untreated references, while marble cohesion was always higher. Surprisingly, ammonium oxalate caused marked worsening of marble thermal behavior. In the case of ethyl silicate, most of the initial benefit after consolidation was lost after the thermal cycles. According to the EIS results, a diffusion-controlled reaction occurred during contact, which indicates that the corrosion process follows a porous layer mechanism. The results also indicated variations in corrosion layer thickness and instability of the salt during the whole test. The EIS results were also used for determining the corrosion rate, this being estimated at ~300\u202f\u00b5m\u202fyear\u22121. Results obtained by EIS were in line with the behaviour of P91 steel as measured by gravimetric, morphological and chemical analysis. The effect of different functionalisation protocols on MFC performance is discussed in terms of changes in wettability, roughness and electrochemical response of modified electrodes. Water contact angle measurements (WCA) show that aryl-mannoside grafting yields a significant increase in hydrophilic character. Surface roughness determinations via atomic force microscopy (AFM) suggest a more disordered glycan adlayer when electrografting is used to facilitate chemisorption. MFCs were used as living sensors to successfully test the coated electrodes: the response of the MFCs in terms of start-up time was accelerated when compared to that of MFC equipped with non-modified electrodes, this suggests a faster development of a mature biofilm community resulting from aryldiazonium modifications, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry of MFC anodes. Furthermore, some statistical graphs have been produced to summarize those publications during the past ten years, with an aim to indicate the distribution and research trend. In this work, we report on an advanced mycotoxin biosensor based on an array of graphene field-effect transistors integrated on a single silicon chip. A specifically designed aptamer against Ochratoxin A (OTA) was used as a recognition element, where it was covalently attached to graphene surface via pyrenebutanoic acid, succinimidyl ester (PBASE) chemistry. Namely, an electric field stimulation was used to promote more efficient \u03c0-\u03c0 stacking of PBASE to graphene. The specific G-rich aptamer strand suggest its \u03c0-\u03c0 stacking on graphene in free-standing regime and reconfiguration in G-quadruplex during binding an OTA molecule. This realistic behavior of the aptamer is sensitive to the ionic strength of the analyte solution, demonstrating a 10-fold increase in sensitivity at low ionic strengths. The graphene-aptamer sensors reported here demonstrate fast assay with the lowest detection limit of 1.4 pM for OTA within a response time as low as 10 s, which is more than 30 times faster compared to any other reported aptamer-based methods for mycotoxin detection. Results suggest that: 1) the ORR activity in acidic conditions is strongly correlated to the concentration of pyridinic nitrogen sites. 2) At high pH, the presence of graphitic nitrogen sites and a graphitized carbon scaffold are the strongest predictors of high ORR onsets, while pyridinic nitrogen site density does not correlate to ORR activity. An inversion region where pyridine-mediated activity competes with graphitic-N mediated activity is identified in the pH region close to the value of pKa of the pyridinium cation. Furthermore, the introduction of C vacancies in Cv-CNNs enhance the redox capacity, promoting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and SDZ degradation. The removal efficiency of SDZ (5\u202fmg L\u22121) reaches almost 100% within 20\u202fmin under visible-light irradiation. In addition, the photocatalyst delivers a high H2 evolution rate of 2.03\u202fmmol\u202fh\u22121 g\u22121. Conducted research presents a rapid and cost-effective approach to technological processing of screen-printed films with anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, by utilizing the high fluence laser radiation. The influence of laser sintering on the screen-printed films was characterized with optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, nanoindenter measurements and current vs voltage measurements. Investigation of surface morphology of screen-printed films revealed that higher laser fluences caused significant decrease in film thickness, trough evaporation of organic additives used in the paste matrix. EDX mapping of carbon content in untreated and laser sintered surface confirmed removal of organic additives. Laser sintering stimulated breaking of large agglomerates into much finer nano-sized particles and promoted formation of necking between individual grains. Crystal structure and vibrational properties of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles was monitored with Raman spectroscopy before and after laser sintering. Obtained results point out that anatase polymorph was preserved during the sintering process, without appearance of other phases. From observation of the behavior of the most intense Eg Raman active mode it was deduced that laser sintering provoked a formation of structural defects i.e. oxygen vacancies in TiO2 nanoparticles, whose concentration increased in the samples treated with higher laser fluences. Mechanical properties of untreated and laser sintered samples were investigated with nanoindenter measurements using several load forces, in order to carefully probe the Young modulus and mechanical hardness. From the analysis of collected data, we established that overall improvement of the mechanical properties with laser sintering originates from formation of very dense ceramic layer with enhanced interconnectivity between individual TiO2 nanoparticles. The isolated ILs in the binary mixtures were the main contributors to toxicity. The binary GO-IL mixtures resulted in more severe joint toxicity than the binary iG-IL mixtures, irrespective of mixture ratios. The mechanism of the joint toxicity may be associated with the adsorption capability of the graphenes for the ILs, the dispersion stability of the graphenes in aquatic media, and modulation of the binary mixtures-induced oxidative stress. A toxic unit assessment showed that the graphene and IL toxicities were additive at low concentration of the mixtures but antagonistic at high concentration of the mixtures. Predictions made using the concentration addition and independent action models were close to the observed joint toxicities regardless of mixture types and mixture ratios.
