Nanogenerators are emerging to be good candidates for converting the small-scale energies from the environment into electrical energy without need for battery. In this paper, a hybrid nanogenerator that integrates three different working mechanisms for conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy is presented. The hybrid nanogenerator is composed of a zig-zag contact mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), a sliding mode TENG and two electromagnetic generators (EMGs). Triboelectric surfaces are oppositely charged aluminium and Kapton layers for a zig-zag contact mode TENG and aluminium and PTFE layers for a sliding mode TENG. Aluminium layer is used as an electron donor, and also as an electrode. EMG unit is composed of two home-made copper coils and a neodymium magnet. All individual units are integrated into a two-piece acrylic shell. The whole device is of a compact, low-cost, and lightweight design. It has a size of 37 mm × 37 mm × 70 mm, which was optimized by modelling. Performance characterization verified the proposed hybrid nanogenerator as an efficient energy harvester. Output characteristics were tested under different loads (in a range from 10 kΩ to 100 MΩ). The maximum output voltage and current of the hybrid nanogenerator were estimated to be about 65 V and 15.25 μA, respectively. The maximum output power was 1.13 mW at 200 Ω. Charging performance analysis showed that the hybrid nanogenerator significantly enhanced the voltage level and charging speed of the tested capacitors in comparison with individual units. The hybrid nanogenerator charged 1μF capacitor to 9.1 V within 60 s. Individual units could simultaneously power at least 144 light-emitting diodes (LEDs). A hybrid signal could power at least 94 LEDs connected in series and at least 50 LEDs connected in parallel. Electrical energy produced by the hybrid nanogenerator was stored in a 47 μF capacitor bank and used to efficiently power a calculator.
Triboelectric nanogenerators", "Electromagnetic generators", "Hybrid nanogenerator", "Electrical engineering. However, direct modification of electrode with metal nanoparticles encountered the drawback of low biocompability although these nanoparticles showed intriguing catalytic properties. In this work, conductive polymer encapsulation of metal nanoparticles was developed to improve the biocompability and then applied for anode modification in MFCs. The Au@polyaniline (Au@PANI) core-shell nanocomposite was simply synthesized with an aid of ionic liquid. Morphological, crystalline and structural properties were studied in details with SEM, TEM, XRD and FTIR analyses and an intact PANI shell covered on the sphere of Au nanoparticle was observed. Upon modification of this core-shell nanocomposite on carbon cloth electrode, significant improvement on bioelectrochemical activity was observed when compared with bare carbon cloth or carbon cloth modified with naked Au nanoparticles. As a result, the performance of MFCs was enhanced from 332 mW/m2 to 804 ± 73 mW/m2 by Au@PANI modification. Different Ag species were determined in the NP suspension that was fed to isopods: (i) total Ag by atomic absorption spectroscopy, (ii) the sum of Ag-PVP complexes and free Ag+ by anodic stripping voltammetry at the bismuth-film electrode, and (iii) free Ag+ by ion-selective potentiometry. The amounts of Ag species in the consumed food were compared to the masses of Ag accumulated in the isopod digestive glands. Our results show that all three Ag species (Ag NPs, Ag-PVP complexes and free Ag+) could be the source of bioaccumulated Ag, but to various degrees depending on the exposure concentration and transformations in the digestive system. We provide a proof that (i) Ag NPs dissolve and Ag-PVP complexes dissociate in the isopod digestive tract; (ii) the concentration of free Ag+ in the suspension offered to the test organisms is not the only measure of bioavailable Ag. Tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotics were ubiquitous in all sites, and they were detected at low ng L-1 concentrations, except for doxycycline, that was present at μg L-1 in one location. DOM analysis revealed that most molecular formulas were CHO compounds (49 %-68 %), with a remarkable percentage containing nitrogen and sulphur (16 %-23 % and 11 %-24 %, respectively). Major DOM components were phenolic and highly unsaturated compounds (~90 %), typical for soil-derived organic matter, while approximately 11 % were unsaturated aliphatic, suggesting that springs may be susceptible to anthropogenic contamination sources. Comparing the DOM fingerprint among sites, the spring showing the most different profile was the one with surface water interaction and characterized by having lower CHO and higher CHOS formulas and aliphatic compounds. Correlations between antibiotics and DOM showed that tetracyclines positively correlate with unsaturated oxygen-rich substances, while sulfonamides relate with aliphatic and unsaturated oxygen-poor compounds. Initially, batch kinetics and isotherm studies were carried out, while the effect of several parameters was evaluated. Both ENRO and MB adsorption onto HNC was better described by Langmuir model, with its maximum adsorption capacity being 34.80 and 27.66 mg/g, respectively. A Pseudo-second order model fitted the experimental data satisfactorily, suggesting chemisorption (through electrostatic interactions) as the prevailing adsorption mechanism, whereas adsorption was also controlled by film diffusion. In the binary system, the presence of MB seemed to act antagonistically to the adsorption of ENRO. The saturated adsorbent was regenerated inside a CAP microbubble reactor and its adsorption capacity was re-tested by applying new adsorption cycles. CAP bubbling was able to efficiently regenerate saturated HNC with low energy requirements (16.67 Wh/g-adsorbent) in contrast to Fenton oxidation. Most importantly, the enhanced adsorption capacity of the CAP-regenerated HNC (compared to raw HNC), when applied in new adsorption cycles, indicated its activation during the regeneration process. In this regard, properties such as the antioxidant ability to extend food shelf life and light resistance, are of great interest in the production of packaging and mulching films, respectively. These features are obtained by developing blends with pure chemicals and/or natural products as additives. In the present work blend formulations of PLA/PBAT with a walnut shell extract rich in antioxidants were developed and evaluated for their properties in comparison with classic PLA/PBAT. Specifically, natural additives, and most importantly the production process were purposely selected to i) be green and cost-effective; ii) confer antioxidant properties; and iii) improve material performance. To this aim, a walnut shell extract (EWS) with high antioxidant activity was obtained thanks to a novel green and cost-effective microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) procedure. A response surface methodology was utilized to explore how the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity are influenced by varying aqueous ethanol concentration, extraction time, and microwave power. The highest predicted TPC and antioxidant activity were achieved when employing the ideal conditions for Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE): using a mixture of 30 % ethanol in water, an irradiation time of 120 s, and a microwave power of 670 W. The optimized EWS was characterized by HPLC-MS determining qualitative and quantitative data with the identification of flavonoids, fatty acids, and anacardic acids among the main components, responsible for antioxidant activity. The resulting EWS powder was melt-mixed at 140C° and 20 RPM with the bio-based PLA/PBAT bioplastic at two different concentrations (0.5 and 1.5 w/w) by forming film specimens. All EWS-based bioplastic films showed increased antioxidant features determined by the DPPH bleaching test, TEAC, and ORAC assays. The films keep the antioxidant capacity even after 7 days of UV-accelerated aging. Remarkably, adding 1.5 % EWS boosted the bioplastic UV light resistance, reducing the abatement of molecular masses by more than 60 % without affecting mechanical properties.
H1-99", "Science (General)", "Polyphenols", "02 engineering and technology", "microwave-assisted extraction", "01 natural sciences", "0104 chemical sciences", "Social sciences (General)", "Q1-390", "walnut shells", "Walnut shells", "Response surface methodology", "response surface chemistry", "Microwave-assisted extraction", "UV protection", "agricultural waste", "0210 nano-technology", "Agricultural waste", "Research Article
https://iris.cnr.it/bitstream/20.500.14243/452886/1/Paper.pdf
https://www.iris.unict.it/bitstream/20.500.11769/588670/1/81_Green3_Green_extraction_green_additives_green_plastics_2024.pdf
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e24469
Influence of crosslinker amount on the microstructure and properties of starch-based superabsorbent polymers by one-step preparation at high starch concentration
This work concerns how crosslinker amount (N, N'-methylene-bisacrylamide) affects the microstructural, absorbent and rheological features of one-step prepared starch-based superabsorbent polymers at a high starch concentration (0.27:1 w/w starch-water). The increased crosslinker amount evidently altered the microstructure and the absorbent and rheological features. Then, the variations in starch-based superabsorbent polymer properties were discussed from a microstructure viewpoint. Particularly, the higher crosslinker quantity rose the crosslinking density and the ratio (GR) of grafted anhydroglucose unit on starch backbone (from 27% to 52%), but short the average polyacrylamide (PAM) chain length (LPAM). These structural features suppressed the chain stretch within starch-based superabsorbent polymer fractal gels (confirmed by smaller Rg value) and promoted the formation of smaller chain networks, thus weakening the water absorption to the starch-based superabsorbent polymer chain networks. Also, the increased GR and reduced LPAM, with lowered chain extension and elevated crosslinking density, probably decreased the flexibility and mobility of chain segments in starch-based superabsorbent polymer gel matrixes. Two families of materials based on bran/cotton and bran/hemp mixtures were fabricated on an industrial scale. The natural materials thus obtained were fully characterized and their end-life was assessed in composting conditions. The research focusses on two main aspects: the nutritional contribution of bran for the fungal growth and its effect on the mechanical properties as a filler in the final composites. Up to date, the complexity of site conditions found in engineering practice, which can include layered stratigraphy and variable water table level, has been discarded in the development of analytical frameworks to favor the derivation of simple, yet effective, closed-form dispersion laws. This work provides a further step towards the analytical study of “seismic metasurfaces” in real site conditions considering the propagation of Rayleigh waves through a layered porous substrate equipped with local resonators. To this aim, we combine classical elasticity theory, Biot’s poroelasticity and an effective medium approach to describe the metasurface dynamics and its coupling with the poroelastic substrate. The developed framework naturally includes simpler configurations like seismic metasurfaces atop homogeneous dry or saturated soils. Apart from known phenomena like wave-resonance hybridization and surface wave band gaps, we predict the existence of an extended frequency range where surface waves are attenuated due to energy leakage in the form of slow pressure waves, as a result of the fluid-solid interaction. Besides, we demonstrate that the surface wave band gap and the related surface-to-shear wave conversion is robust to variations in the water table level. Conversely, when the dry and saturated layers have different material parameters, for example, due to different porosity ratios, the surface-to-shear wave conversion can be accompanied by the excitation of higher-order surface modes, which remain channeled below the metasurface. These analytical findings, augmented and confirmed by numerical simulations, evidence the importance of accounting for fluid-solid interaction in the dynamics of seismic metasurfaces.
13. How to achieve the efficient interfacial electron transfer from microbes to the electrode and reduce the cost are challenges of bioelectrochemical systems. This study demonstrated that the goose feather-derived N-doped activated carbon could be adopted as the effective anode modifier to improve the bioanode performance of bioelectrochemical systems. Various electrochemical characterizations showed that both the electrochemical activity and electron transfer efficiency of the electrodes were improved after modification with the goose feather-derived N-doped activated carbon. By using Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 inoculated bioelectrochemical systems with the goose feather-derived N-doped activated carbon-modified anode, a current density of 0.96 ± 0.03 A/m2 was achieved, which was about 2 times higher than that without modification. Further analysis revealed a simultaneous enhancement of direct and flavins-mediated extracellular electron transfer after the modification with the goose feather-derived N-doped activated carbon. This enhanced extracellular electron transfer could be not only attributed to the intense interaction between cytochromes OmcA/MtrC and the goose feather-derived N-doped activated carbon, but also due to the improved flavins redox reaction on the goose feather-derived N-doped activated carbon-modified anode surface. The metasurface consists of an array of nonlinear oscillators attached to the free surface of a homogeneous substrate. We describe, analytically and numerically, the effects of nonlinear interaction force and energy loss on the dispersion of Rayleigh waves. We develop closed-form expressions to predict the dispersive characteristics of nonlinear Rayleigh waves by adopting a leading-order effective medium description. In particular, we demonstrate how hardening nonlinearity reduces and eventually eliminates the linear filtering bandwidth of the metasurface. Softening nonlinearity, in contrast, induces lower and broader spectral gaps for weak to moderate strengths of nonlinearity, and narrows and eventually closes the gaps at high strengths of nonlinearity. The meta-trench is a novel device, composed of an array of resonant units buried in the ground in a proper arrangement, aimed at reducing the railway and/or subway induced ground motion by exploiting its scattering and resonant properties. Compared to classical open trenches, the resonators contribute to improving the wave mitigation performance of the trench in the low-frequency regime. The proposed formulation allows to consider the wave source anywhere in the half-space and a generic distribution of resonators in terms of number and position. The incident wave field generated by the source, such as a train or subway, along with the scattered wave fields produced by the resonant units that constitute the meta-trench, are modeled via Green's functions. The multiple scattering formulation enables the solution of coupled wave problems by determining the amplitudes of scattered wave fields at various frequencies. Through comparison with finite element simulations, we demonstrate that in both buried source (i.e., subway) and surface-located source (i.e., ground railway) scenarios, our analytical formulation is able to properly model the dynamics of the coupled problems with a noticeable computational cost saving. The F− removal capacity has been tested on uncalcined and calcined carbonate layered double hydroxides (LDHs), with different cationic compositions (M2+ = Mg2+, Zn2+; M3+ = Al3+, Fe3+) and M2+/M3+ molar ratio (2, 3, 4), taking into account the necessity of a simple defluoridation method. At the high pH reached during the experiments (up to pH 12 for calcined LDHs), the presence of carbonate species in solution significantly affects the F− removal capacity. The recyclability of the sorbent was tested by regeneration through calcination of the 3MgAlFe-cal phase: under F− unsaturated interlayer conditions, up to 80% of the starting F− removal capacity is still preserved after four regeneration cycles, indicating that LDHs can be reused after regeneration and have a potential use in water defluoridation.
fluoride-rich water; layered double hydroxides; regeneration; removal capacity; water defluoridation", "02 engineering and technology", "0210 nano-technology", "01 natural sciences", "6. However, their responses are greatly affected by the metabolic activity and growth of these living entities and/or the interference of electrode wiring that can act as an electroactive surface for growth or constitute a source of contamination by corrosion. This restricts the meaningful comparison of the performance of distinct electrode materials in BES. This work describes a methodology for simultaneous electrochemical control and measurement of the microbial response on different electrode materials under the same physicochemical and biological conditions. The method is based on the use of a single channel potentiostat and one counter and reference electrodes to simultaneously polarize several electrode materials in a sole bioelectrochemical cell. Research to date has focused on the self-healing process in humid air and water. However, almost all structures are built on or in the ground, thus, significant amounts of concrete are exposed to ground conditions. To investigate the effect of soil incubation on the self-healing process, laboratory experiments were conducted on mortar impregnated with Bacillus subtilis (encapsulated in calcium alginate). The mortar specimens were initially cracked and subdivided into three groups and each group was incubated for 28 days within different incubation environments, namely, partially-saturated soil, full-saturated soil, and water. Supported by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry (EDX), the results revealed that the bio self-healing can be activated within the cracks under the saturated regime of soil as far as the matric suction is smaller than the capillary pressure of the cracks. Ten different biomasses (eight different plant species, of which two were grown in two different sites) were processed to evaluate this aspect. Moist and dry, woody and grassy biomasses were gasified in the same experimental setup under similar conditions. Only small differences could be seen in the gasification experiments. The carbon gasification efficiency was 60.3 ± 5.1 %, the gas compositions were very similar. Solid deposits formed in all experiments in the same temperature zone of the reactor containing coke, salt building elements and heavy metals, sometimes leading to plugging. Nevertheless, an experimental duration of 6 h could be achieved for the dry biomasses. The experiment with the moist biomass Reed Canary Grass was ended early due to plugging of the feed tubing which is due to the different size reduction procedure for moist biomasses resulting in bigger biomass particles. Soil was also supplemented with electrically conductive particles of biochar as a strategy to construct a conductive network with microbes in the soil matrix, thus extending the radius of influence of the snorkel. The results of a comprehensive suite of chemical, microbiological and ecotoxicological analyses evidenced that biochar addition, rather than the presence of a snorkel, was the determining factor in accelerating PH removal from contaminated soils, possibly accelerating syntrophic and/or cooperative metabolisms involved in the degradation of PH. The enhancement of biodegradation was mirrored by an increased abundance of anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms known to be involved in the degradation of PH and related functional genes. Plant ecotoxicity assays confirmed a reduction of soils toxicity in treatments receiving electrically conductive biochar.
02 engineering and technology", "01 natural sciences", "Hydrocarbons", "6. For the first time, TiO2 and ZnO catalysts were compared when employed in conjunction with micro-discharges generated directly into the interconnected soil channels. In the presence of catalysts, a significant increase in degradation efficiency was observed; after 5 min, trifluralin degradation increased from 66.5% (plasma alone) to 94.2% and 93% with the addition of TiO2 and ZnO, respectively. In terms of degradation kinetics, TiO2 was a slightly superior catalyst compared to ZnO whereas both catalysts performed better under oxygen than in air atmosphere. Compared to plasma alone, the plasma-catalytic treatment considerably increased (∼3fold) the process energy efficiency. Moreover, the inhibitory effect of soil moisture was less pronounced during TiO2 plasma-catalysis where a reduction of ∼19% in pollutant degradation was observed at 5 wt% soil moisture compared to a ∼54% reduction during plasma alone. The addition of TiO2 and ZnO resulted in a significant increase in NO2 concentration and a noticeable reduction in O3 generation associated with an increase of certain plasma species concentration and the generation of additional and more active ROS, respectively. Liquid chromatography (UPLC/MS) data at the early stages of the trifluralin degradation revealed similar intermediates and degradation processes between plasma-alone and plasma-catalysis. The present effort supports the potential of future implementation of a plasma-catalytic soil remediation method being a rapid, highly efficient, low energy demanding and green method.
13. Three types of SMNPs (Fe3O4@SiO2) with the same magnetic core but with different thickness of silica shells were successfully separated using the developed microfluidic platform. The innovative aspect of the presented separation method is that the induced velocity on the three different types of SMNPs while imposed to the same magnetic field gradient in a static fluid is inversely proportional to their overall, non-magnetic volume. This is due to the enhanced Stokes’ drag force exerted on the nanoparticles (NPs) resulting from their greater volume. Detected differences in velocity between the NPs indicate the change in their hydrodynamic size (due to the different thickness of silica shells) in the static liquid sample. The developed size recognition platform could provide information on the hydrodynamic size of NPs much faster and cheaper than conventional laboratory equipment such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS).
02 engineering and technology", "0210 nano-technology
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.sna.2017.12.047
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Sensors%20and%20Actuators%20A%3A%20Physical
The application of bismuth film electrode for measuring Zn(II) under less acidic conditions in the presence of cell culture medium and ZnO nanoparticles
Abstract A study for the application of bismuth film electrode (BiFE) under less acidic conditions for anodic stripping voltammetric measurements of Zn(II) in complex organic sample, i.e. in the cell culture medium containing ZnO nanoparticles, is presented. The energy generation in this technology vastly depends on the optical behaviour of the reflector materials of the solar field. Corrosion of solar reflectors might be an issue in locations with high corrosive environments because an excessive corrosion of the solar mirror could be catastrophic for the profitability of the concentrated solar thermal plant. This research is focusing on modelling the durability of four different solar reflector materials exposed outdoors by accelerated aging tests. For this purpose, ten locations suitable for concentrating solar thermal applications were classified depending on their corrosive aggressiveness. Commercial, free-lead and low-cost reflectors samples were exposed in all the sites to determine the influence of the corrosion in its durability. Corrosion defects appeared in the solar reflectors during outdoor exposure were properly reproduced by CASS test. Novel lifetime prediction models were developed for all the solar reflectors depending on the corrosive aggressiveness of the place. Number and thickness of the paint coatings employed in the solar mirrors were identified as one of the most important parameters to improve the energy generation of a CSP plant in corrosive environments. A reduction of the capital invested in the solar mirror purchase is expected for sites with low corrosivity.
Corrosion", "Renewable energy", "13. Both coatings were tested isothermally at 580 °C in contact with the Solar Salt (60% wt% NaNO3, 40 wt% KNO3) under static and dynamic conditions. Uncoated P91 showed considerable mass gains in both conditions and there was evidence of extensive spallation on both cases. Mass loss was therefore also measured after removing the corrosion products by chemical etching so that the corrosion rate could be better estimated. P91 developed a complex, fast growing multilayered oxide scale which included Fe2O3, Fe3O4 and NaFeO2 in molten nitrates whatever the test conditions. All the coated systems and in particular the nickel-aluminide coating in contact with the Solar Salt up to 1000 h performed much better than the uncoated material as they exhibited lower weight variations and no evidence of significant spallation. The aluminide coating developed a thin Na ferrite scale as shown by SEM-EDS and XRD after testing under static conditions. On the tested nickel-aluminide coating NiAl2O4 was detected only by XRD, so it is not possible to establish if it resulted from the oxidation of the residual undiffused material left after heat treatment, or to a thin layer formed on top of the coating after exposure to molten salt. The development of an efficient upgrading process for such complex feedstocks necessitates detailed knowledge of the molecular composition and the specific heteroatom-containing compounds to understand and optimize the hydrotreating reactions. In this study, we present the upgrading of sewage sludge-derived HTL biocrude via a two-stage hydrotreatment process and perform advanced chemical characterization of the feedstock, intermediate, and final upgraded products with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). We show that hydrotreatment significantly improves the quality of the oil, primarily succeeding in cracking the heavy molecules and removing the sulfur- and oxygen-containing components. FTICR-MS analysis shows that the HTL biocrude has a high concentration of fatty acid amides that readily lose their oxygen and nitrogen during hydrotreating and are converted into saturated hydrocarbons, whereas the aromatic OxNy compounds are converted into N1 and N2 classes, which are more resistant to hydrotreating. We also demonstrate that the upgraded HTL oil can be successfully blended with intermediate refinery streams, such as vacuum gas oil (VGO), for further co-processing to in-spec fuels in conventional processes. Nitrate can be cathodically reduced in bioelectrochemical systems using autotrophic denitrifiers with low energy investment and without chemical addition. Successful denitrification was demonstrated in previous studies in both microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) with continuous current flow, whereas the impact of intermittent current supply (e.g., in a fluidized-bed system) on denitrification and particularly the electron-storing capacity of the denitrifying electroactive biofilms (EABs) on the cathodes have not been studied in depth. In this study, two continuously fed MECs were operated in parallel under continuous and periodic polarization modes over 280 days, respectively. Under continuous polarization, the maximum denitrification rate reached 233 g NO3--N/m3/d with 98% nitrate removal (0.6 mg NO3--N/L in the effluent) with negligible intermediate production, while under a 30 s open-circuit/30 s polarization mode, 86% of nitrate was removed at a maximum rate of 205 g NO3--N/m3/d (4.5 mg NO3--N/L in the effluent) with higher N2O production (6.6-9.3 mg N/L in the effluent). Conversely, periodic polarization could be an interesting approach in other bioelectrochemical processes if the generation of chemical intermediates (partially reduced or oxidized) should be favored. Similar microbial communities dominated byGallionellaceaewere found in both MECs; however, swapping the polarization modes and the electrochemical analyses suggested that the periodically polarized EABs probably developed a higher ability for electron storage and transfer, which supported the direct electron transfer pathway in discontinuous operation or fluidized biocathodes.
bioelectrochemical systems (BESs)", "periodic polarization", "Autotrophic Processes", "Technology and Engineering", "denitrification", "Nitrates", "AUTOTROPHIC DENITRIFICATION", "EABs", "Bioelectric Energy Sources", "NITRATE-CONTAMINATED GROUNDWATER", "02 engineering and technology", "6. Stickers glued to fruit or vegetable peels usually remain attached to the organic material despite sorting processes in the composting plant. Here, we investigated the effects of industrial composting on the structural alterations of these stickers. Commercial polypropylene (PP) stickers on banana peels were added to a typical organic material mixture for processing in an industrial composting plant and successfully resampled after a prerotting (11 days) and main rotting step (25 days). Afterward, both composted and original stickers were analyzed for surface and structural changes via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and micro- and nano-X-ray computed tomography (CT) combined with deep learning approaches. The composting resulted in substantial surface changes and degradation in the form of microbial colonization, deformation, and occurrence of cracks in all stickers. Their pore volumes increased from 16.7% in the original sticker to 26.3% at the end of the compost process. In a similar way, the carbonyl index of the stickers increased. Micro-CT images additionally revealed structural changes in the form of large adhesions that penetrated the surface of the sticker. These changes were accompanied by delamination after 25 days of composting, thus overall hinting at the degradation of the stickers and the subsequent formation of smaller microplastic pieces.
Technology", "ddc:600", "ddc:550", "Composting", "600", "02 engineering and technology", "540", "Polypropylenes", "01 natural sciences", "620", "Soil", "Fruit", "Microscopy", " Electron", " Scanning", "info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/600", "Tomography", " X-Ray Computed", "0210 nano-technology", "Plastics", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.est.3c08734
https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.3c08734
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Environmental%20Science%20%26amp%3B%20Technology

["0301 basic medicine", "03 medical and health sciences", "02 engineering and technology", "0210 nano-technology
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.est.8b02895
https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.8b02895
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Environmental%20Science%20%26amp%3B%20Technology
Effect of Surface and Salt Properties on the Ion Distribution around Spherical Nanoparticles: Monte Carlo Simulations
Nanoparticle surface charge properties represent key parameters to predict their fate, reactivity, and complexation in natural, biological, and industrial dispersions. In this context, we present here an original approach to better understand the surface charge electrostatic properties of spherical nanoparticles (NPs). The ion distribution around one nanoparticle is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations and by adjusting a wide range of parameters including NP properties (surface charge density and site distribution), salt concentration (ionic strength and cation concentration), and salt valency (mono-, di-, and trivalent salt). A canonical Metropolis Monte Carlo method is used to reach equilibrium states and a primitive Coulomb model is applied to describe the electrostatic interactions between explicit discrete sites, counterions, and salt particles. Our results show that the presence of explicit surface charges on the NP and in solution has a strong influence on the local ion distribution and on the effective surface charge of the nanoparticles. The increase of surface charge density reduces the NP effective charge by the formation of a condensation layer around the nanoparticle. However, a limit of condensation is achieved due to steric effects and electrostatic repulsions. The presence of di- and trivalent cations is also found to strongly modify the effective charge and improve condensation state as long as electrostatic repulsion between the cations close to the surface are not so strong. At high trivalent cation concentration, the NP effective charge is greatly reduced and the local environment around the nanoparticle becomes more structured with the formation of a multi layer structure composed by anions and cations.
ddc:333.7-333.9", "info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/333.7-333.9", "info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/550", "ddc:550", "02 engineering and technology", "0210 nano-technology", "01 natural sciences", "0104 chemical sciences
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.jpcb.6b05104
https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcb.6b05104
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/The%20Journal%20of%20Physical%20Chemistry%20B
Current multiscale plasmonic systems pose a modeling challenge. Classical macroscopic theories fail to capture quantum effects in such systems, whereas quantum electrodynamics is impractical given the total size of the experimentally relevant systems, as the number of interactions is too large to be addressed one by one. To tackle the challenge, in this paper we propose to use the Madelung form of the hydrodynamic Drude model, in which the quantum effect electron spill-out is incorporated by describing the metal-dielectric interface using a super-Gaussian function. The results for a two-dimensional nanoplasmonic wedge are correlated to those from nonlocal full-wave numerical calculations based on a linearized hydrodynamic Drude model commonly employed in the literature, showing good qualitative agreement. Additionally, a conformal transformation perspective is provided to explain qualitatively the findings. The methodology described here may be applied to understand, both numerically and theoretically, the modular inclusions of additional quantum effects, such as electron spill-out and nonlocality, that cannot be incorporated seamlessly by using other approaches.
0103 physical sciences", "02 engineering and technology", "0210 nano-technology", "01 natural sciences
["creator
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.jpcc.2c04828
https://eprints.ncl.ac.uk/fulltext.aspx?url=300384/889C4E35-FE1D-401D-88C7-A7925000D2D6.pdf&pub_id=300384
https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcc.2c04828
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/The%20Journal%20of%20Physical%20Chemistry%20C
Structured light in the subwavelength scale is important for a broad range of applications ranging from lithography to imaging. Of particular importance is the ability to dynamically shift the pattern of the fields, which has led to the development of structured illumination microscopy. Further extension of structured illumination to plasmonic systems has enabled imaging beyond diffraction limit. However, structured illumination usually requires complicated optical setups entailing moving mechanical parts. Here a polarization tunable structured plasmonic field (SPF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The SPF is formed by surface plasmon interference (SPI) generated by a fishbone-shaped metasurface on a thin gold film. Importantly, the SPF can be continuously shifted by merely varying the linear polarization state of an incident beam. Single-phase rock-salt-structured CaO-MnO materials with Ca:Mn ratios larger than unity were produced in reducing atmosphere and subsequently densified by spark plasma sintering in vacuum. Annealing in air at 1340 °C between 1 and 24 h activated redox-driven exsolution and resulted in a variation in microstructure and CaMnO3-δ materials with 10 and 15 vol % CaMn2O4, respectively. The nature of the CaMnO3-δ/CaMn2O4 grain boundary was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy on short- and long-term annealed samples, and a sharp interface with no secondary phase formation was indicated in both cases. This was further complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which confirmed that the CaMnO3-δ indeed is a line compound. DFT calculations predict segregation of oxygen vacancies from the bulk of CaMnO3-δ to the interface between CaMnO3-δ and CaMn2O4, resulting in an enhanced electronic conductivity of the CaMnO3-δ phase. Samples with 15 vol % CaMn2O4 annealed for 24 h reached the highest electrical conductivity of 73 S·cm-1 at 900 °C. The lowest thermal conductivity was obtained for composites with 10 vol % CaMn2O4 annealed for 8 h, reaching 0.56 W·m-1K-1 at 700 °C. However, the highest thermoelectric figure-of-merit, zT, was obtained for samples with 15 vol % CaMn2O4 reaching 0.11 at temperatures between 800 and 900 °C, due to the enhanced power factor above 700 °C. It is therefore beneficial to enhance absorption signals by confining the infrared light to deeply subwavelength volumes comparable in size to the biomolecules of interest. This can be achieved with surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, for which plasmonic nanorod antennas represent the predominant implementation. However, unifying design guidelines for such systems are still lacking. Here, we introduce an experimentally verified framework for designing antenna-based molecular IR spectroscopy sensors. Specifically, we find that in order to maximize the sensing performance, it is essential to combine the signal enhancement originating from nanoscale gaps between the antenna elements with the enhancement obtained from coupling to the grating order modes of the unit cell. Using an optimized grating order-coupled nanogap design, our experiments and numerical simulations show a hotspot limit of detection of two proteins per nanogap. Furthermore, we introduce and analyze additional limit of detection parameters, specifically for deposited surface mass, in-solution concentration, and secondary structure determination. Our experiments show that the extracted secondary structure signals from plasmonically enhanced amide I signatures in the protein monolayer can be reliably and reproducibly acquired with second derivative analysis for dynamic monitoring. Furthermore, by using a polymer layer we show that our nanoplasmonic approach of extracting the frequency components of vibrational signatures matches with the results attained from gold-standard infrared transmission measurements. By facilitating conformational analysis on small quantities of immobilized proteins in response to external stimuli such as drugs, our plasmonic biosensor could be used to introduce platforms for screening small molecule modulators of protein misfolding and aggregation.
0301 basic medicine", "Protein Aggregates", "Protein Folding", "03 medical and health sciences", "Spectrophotometry", " Infrared", "Surface Properties", "alpha-Synuclein", "Thermodynamics", "Biosensing Techniques", "02 engineering and technology", "0210 nano-technology", "Protein Structure", " Secondary
Dordaneh Etezadi, John B. Reported products and mechanisms for the reaction have varied, most likely because of green rust￢ﾀﾙs layered structure, as reduction at outer and interlayer surfaces might produce different reaction products with variable stabilities. Based on studies of Cr(III) oxidation by biogenic Mn (IV) oxides, Cr mobility in oxic soils is controlled by the solubility of the Cr(III)-bearing phase. Therefore, careful engineering of green rust properties, i.e., crystal/particle size, morphology, structure, and electron availability, is essential for its optimization as a remediation reagent. In the present study, pure green rust sulfate and green rust sulfate with Al, Mg and Zn substitutions were synthesized and reacted with identical chromate (CrO42￢ﾈﾒ) solutions. The reaction products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy and treated with synthetic ￎﾴ-MnO2 to assess how easily Cr(III) in the products could be oxidized. It was found that Mg substitution had the most beneficial effect on Cr lability in the product. Less than 2.5% of the Cr(III) present in the reacted Mg-GR was reoxidized by ￎﾴ-MnO2 within 14ￂﾠdays, and the particle structure and Cr speciation observed during X-ray scattering and absorption analyses of this product suggested that Cr(VI) was reduced in its interlayer. Reduction in the interlayer lead to the linkage of newly-formed Cr(III) to hydroxyl groups in the adjacent octahedral layers, which resulted in increased structural coherency between these layers, distinctive rim domains, sequestration of Cr(III) in insoluble Fe oxide bonding environments resistant to reoxidation and partial transformation to Cr(III)-substituted feroxyhyte. Based on the results of this study of hexavalent chromium reduction by green rust sulfate and other studies, further improvements can also be made to this remediation technique by reacting chromate with a large excess of green rust sulfate, which provides excess Fe(II) that can catalyze transformation to more crystalline iron oxides, and synthesis of the reactant under alkaline conditions, which has been shown to favor chromium reduction in the interlayer of Fe(II)-bearing phyllosilicates.

Chromium", "550", "Geography & travel", "Remediation", "02 engineering and technology", "910", "551", "01 natural sciences", "Chromium", " Green rust", " X-ray absorption spectroscopy", " Remediation", "remediation", "500 Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik::550 Geowissenschaften", " Geologie::551 Geologie", " Hydrologie", " Meteorologie", "GE1-350", "info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/910", "QD1-999", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "Green rust", "X-ray absorption spectroscopy", "540", "ddc:910", "6. A decrease in the fiber thickness resulted in a decrease in the pore size and 60% improvement in the flux. The fiber mat exhibited excellent microfiltration behavior after being coated with a surface-charged chitosan (CS) polymer, compared with its non-coated counterparts. Porosity, flux and protein adsorption studies were performed for these ENMs. A comparatively less reduced flux and better recovery ratio were observed for the PVDF-PHEMA-ENMs and CS-coated PVDF-PHEMA-ENMs due to hydrophilic pendant hydroxyl groups (from PHEMA) and/or CS groups, which can prohibit irreversible protein adsorption, on the ENM surfaces. One step method for the fabrication of electospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) with hydrophilic surfaces and improved flux via in situ polymerization technique is described. The developed membranes also possess enhanced antifouling properties when compared with the virgin PVDF polymer.
2.
