In the Itasy region, AFS were introduced to improve farmers' livelihoods by diversifying income sources and to address problems related to soil degradation. Previous studies in the region have shown the potential of AFS to store organic carbon in the soil. In the present work, we carried out further studies to assess the main factors affecting SOC stocks in AFS. In 2014, we performed a soil sampling on 137 AFS farmers'plots to assess SOC stocks in different AFS. In 2018, a second sampling was carried out to calculate SOC storage rates using the diachronic approach on 30 most representative AFS. The results revealed that the factors 'age of the system' and 'type of organic inputs' significantly affected SOC stocks in AFS. SOC stocks increased significantly over time in AFS plots, benefiting from regular organic inputs such as manure and/or compost. In contrast, SOC stocks remained unchanged over time in AFS plots where no organic fertilization was used. Our study showed a substantial SOC storage up to 47 parts per thousand year(-1), mainly explained by regular additions of organic inputs to maintain soil fertility and crop production. The soil is modelled as a poroelastic material, which is deformed by the growth of the tubers, where the growth of each tuber is dependent on the uptake of nutrients via a sink term within the soil representing root nutrient uptake. Special attention is paid to the reduction in void space, resulting change in local water content and the impact on nutrient diffusion within the soil as the tubers increase in size. To validate the multiple scale homogenisation procedure, we compare the system of homogenised equations to the original set of equations and find that the solutions between the two models differ by [Formula: see text]. However, we find that the computation time between the two sets of equations differs by several orders of magnitude. In Madagascar, cropping systems based on direct seeding with permanent vegetation cover provide a new means for sustainable agriculture to protect the environment and make the most of natural resources. This study assessed the effects of different direct seeding mulch-based cropping systems on soil microbial biomass and activities. The soil was andic Dystrustept. Samples of the soil were taken from 0 to 5\u00a0cm soil layer of three direct seeding mulch-based cropping systems (DMC using crop residues and living mulches). The samples were compared with samples from conventionally tilled plots (CT) and natural fallows (NF). The field experiments were carried out over a 12-year-period and two types of amendment were applied once a year at sowing, farmyard manure (FYM) and farmyard manure combined with an NPK chemical fertilizer. The C and N content, microbial basal respiration and biomass and \u03b2-glucosidase, urease and acid phosphatase activities were determined. The results showed that there was no interaction between soil management strategies and the use of fertilizer. Furthermore, the fertilizer did not affect the soil C and N content or the acid phosphatase and urease activities. Farmyard manure with added NPK had a significantly greater effect than farmyard manure on its own, increasing the microbial biomass, soil respiration and \u03b2-glucosidase activity up to 26%, 52% and 20%, respectively but there was no significant difference between natural fallows and direct seeding mulch-based cropping systems. However, conventional tillage showed a significantly lower soil microbial biomass, C content, microbial respiration and urease activity than natural fallows. The results for direct seeding mulch-based systems varied according to the microbial activities measured. However, soil \u03b2-glucosidase and acid phosphatase activities were significantly higher for the direct seeding mulch-based systems using crop residues than for the direct seeding mulch-based systems using living mulches. Direct seeding mulch-based systems with Desmodium uncinatum living mulch had significantly lower microbial biomass and respiration than the other direct seeding mulch-based systems. They are among the driest terrestrial samples, although the exact mechanism of water loss and the behaviour of other volatile species during these processes are debated. Based on the difference in magnitude of the Cu and Zn isotopic fractionations in tektites, and the difference of diffusivity between these elements, it was suggested that volatile loss was diffusion-limited. Tin is potentially well suited to testing this model, as it has a lower diffusivity in silicate melts than both Cu and Zn, but a similar volatility to Zn. Here, we analysed the Sn stable isotopic composition in a suite of seven tektites, representing three of the four known tektite strewn fields, and for which Zn and Cu isotopes were previously reported. Tin is enriched in the heavier isotopes (\u22652.5\u2030 on the 122Sn/118Sn ratio) in tektites, correlated with the degree of Sn elemental depletion in their respective samples as well as with Cu and Zn isotope ratios, implying a common control. While the isotope fractionation of Sn, Cu and Zn is a result of volatility, the magnitude of isotope fractionation is strongly moderated by their relative rates of diffusion in the molten tektite droplets. It is a physically-based model that couples finite strain soil deformation with unsaturated water and air flow, while improving on existing cohesion-based approaches to mechanical root reinforcement and empirical soil water-uptake approaches typically used to deal with rooted slopes. The model is used to show that the dynamics of soil-water pressure and soil deformation depend strongly on the physics of the root-water uptake and the elasto-plastic soil mechanics. Root water uptake can cause suctions and corresponding soil shrinkage sufficiently large to necessitate a finite-strain approach. Although this deformation can change the intrinsic permeability, hydraulic conductivity remains dominated by the water content. The model incorporates simultaneous air-flow, but this is shown to be unimportant for soil-water dynamics under the conditions assumed in example simulations. The mechanical action of roots is incorporated via a root stress tensor and a simulation is used to show how root tension is mobilised within a swelling soil. The incremental formulation proposed is expressed in terms of strain and suction increments (i.e. strain-driven) and defines an initial value problem (IVP) that can be solved once the initial state and the pair of increments of the driven variables are known. The numerical integration of this IVP is carried out by extending to unsaturated condition, the well-known explicit substepping formulation with automatic error control widely used for saturated soils. A notable feature of the substepping integration scheme presented is that it integrates simultaneously the model equations for both mechanical and water retention responses. Hence, the estimate of the local truncation error to automatically adjust the size of the integration step is not only affected by the local error in stresses and mechanical hardening parameter (as in a saturated soil model) but, additionally, by the local error incurred in the integration of the water retention relations (i.e. degree of saturation and water retention hardening parameter). To assess the yield performances of these cropping systems, an experiment was set up in 2003 at Andranomanelatra (1640 m asl) in the Malagasy highlands. Grain yield, yield components, biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake of upland rice were analyzed in the 2004-2005, 2006-2006, and 2006-2007 seasons, and root length density was measured in the 2007-2008 season. The rice crop was planted every second year following two different crops: maize intercropped with soybean (M + S, with both conventional tillage and no tillage) and maize intercropped with Brachiaria ruziziensis (M + B only with no tillage). For each cropping system, two levels of fertilization were used: no fertilizer or application of organic inputs and mineral fertilizer. The season, cropping system, and fertilization treatment had significant effects on rice grain yields. Higher yields were associated with a greater number of plants per m2, which decreased significantly over the three seasons, probably due to the highly variable beginning of the rains, and in the final season, with attacks by soil insects. The rice yield with conventional tillage was the highest and differed significantly from rice yield when maize was intercropped with Brachiaria under the no-till system, but not when the maize was intercropped with soybean with no tillage. In all three seasons, grain yields were closely linked to crop N at harvest. Differences in N uptake between treatments appeared very early in the crop cycle. Under conventional tillage, root length density at 68 days after sowing was higher between 0 and 30 cm depth than with no tillage. Results showed that application of sufficient slaked lime to initially increase the pH of the topsoil by 1 unit caused an increase in pH to 5 cm deeper than the layer of application as a result of bicarbonate leaching. With leaching of Ca from slaked lime or gypsum from the topsoil to the subsoil there was a decrease in exchangeable Al in the subsoil. Surface application of slaked lime or gypsum or both decreased the activity of toxic Al and increased AlSO4+ activity in the subsoil solution. The Ca added in slaked lime or gypsum was accounted for by the increase in exchangeable Ca over the soil profile and the leaching loss. By contrast there was a negative balance of extractable sulfate and aluminum in the soil, indicating the formation of precipitates. There was little mineralisation of N and formation of NO3- under the conditions of the experiment. The cellular architecture of this plate invokes the well-known octet topology, while the metadevices rely on novel customized octets either comprising spherical masses added to the midpoint of their struts or variable node thickness. We numerically determine the dispersion curves of a doubly-periodic array of octets, which produce a broad bandgap whose underlying physics is elucidated and leveraged as a design paradigm, allowing the construction of a metabarrier effective for inhibiting the transmission of waves. More sophisticated effects emerge upon parametric analyses of the added masses and node thickness, leading to graded designs that spatially filter waves through an enlarged bandgap via rainbow trapping. Additionally, Luneburg and Maxwell metalenses are realized using the spatial modulation of the tuning parameters and numerically tested. Wavefronts impinging on these structures are progressively curved within the inhomogeneous media and steered toward a focal point. We focus on the effects of two physical processes: root water uptake and pond formation in the furrows. Special attention is paid to the physical description of ponding as an effect of transient rain events. We focus on phenomena taking place in the furrow cross\uffe2\uff80\uff90section, not on the drainage along the furrow. The resulting model comprises a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations that describe the mathematical interplay between solute transport, water movement and furrow pond depth. The system of equations is solved numerically using finite element techniques. We conducted numerical simulations to determine how mobile solutes with low buffer powers penetrate into the soil. We considered two cases: low rainfall, in which pond formation does not occur, and high rainfall, in which significant ponding is observed in the furrows. We found, in the presence of roots, that mobile solutes collected into a concentrated spot adjacent to the root system independent of rainfall intensity. In the absence of roots, however, we observed that water infiltration from ponding acted as the dominant transport mechanism for mobile solutes. Moreover, chromium abundances are depleted in most surficial terrestrial rocks relative to chondrites such that Cr isotopes are a powerful tool to detect the contribution of various types of extra\uffe2\uff80\uff90terrestrial material in terrestrial impactites. This approach can thus be used to constrain the nature of the bolide resulting in breccia and melt rocks in terrestrial impact structures. Here, we report the Cr isotope composition of impact rocks from the ~0.57\uffc2\uffa0Ma Lonar crater (India), which is the best\uffe2\uff80\uff90preserved impact structure excavated in basaltic target rocks. Results confirm the\uffc2\uffa0presence of a chondritic component in several bulk rock samples of up to 3%. Starting from the assumption that a homogeneous microbial community maximizes its growth rate over the period of decomposition, we formalize decomposition as an optimal control problem where the decomposition rate is a control variable. When maintenance respiration is negligible, we find that the optimal decomposition kinetics scale as the square root of the substrate concentration, resulting in growth kinetics following a Hill function with exponent 1/2 (rather than the Monod growth function). When maintenance respiration is important, optimal decomposition is a more complex function of substrate concentration, which does not decrease to zero as the substrate is depleted. With this optimality-based formulation, a trade-off emerges between microbial carbon-use efficiency (ratio of growth rate over substrate uptake rate) and decomposition rate at the beginning of decomposition. In environments where carbon substrates are easily lost due to abiotic or biotic factors, microbes with higher uptake capacity and lower efficiency are selected, compared to environments where substrates remain available. In this paper, we assessed the long-term effects of two organic and one conventional cropping systems on the soil microbial community structure using high-throughput sequencing analysis, as well as the link between these communities and the changes in the soil properties and crop yield. The results showed that the crop yield was similar among the three cropping systems. The microbial community changed according to cropping system. Organic cultivation with manure compost and compost tea (Org_C) showed a change in the bacterial community associated with an improved soil carbon and nutrient content. A linear discriminant analysis effect size showed different bacteria and fungi as key microorganisms for each of the three different cropping systems, for conventional systems (Conv), different microorganisms such as Nesterenkonia, Galbibacter, Gramella, Limnobacter, Pseudoalteromonas, Pantoe, and Sporobolomyces were associated with pesticides, while for Org_C and organic cultivation with manure (Org_M), other types of microorganisms were associated with organic amendments with different functions, which, in some cases, reduce soil borne pathogens. The cloak smoothly redirects surface waves around objects, without any scattering or energy loss by adjusting its material properties based on transformational elastodynamics principles. Initially, we delve into cloaking of Love waves within an isotropic layered medium. By leveraging the form invariance of the governing equation, we derive the requisite anisotropic mechanical characteristics of ideal cloaks to hide triangular and parabolic-shaped defects. We validate our approach through dispersion analyses and harmonic simulations, matching ideal cloaks with pristine mediums. Then, for triangular defects, we adapt the ideal properties into layered cloaks of monoclinic double-material unit cells, demonstrating great convergence with ideal case, as the unit cell size decreases.  Next, we explore cloaking of Rayleigh waves in homogeneous mediums. By utilizing transformation elastodynamics and assuming identity gauge for the displacements, we obtain the effective cloaking properties, characterized by non-symmetric elastic tensors. To address this, we employ a symmetrization technique to approximate the non-symmetric behavior by symmetric, yet anisotropic, composites. Symmetrized cloaks with triangular and semi-circular shapes are evaluated through simulations and dispersion analyses, with a semi-circular design exhibiting superior performance. Finally, we construct 3-D cloaks for Rayleigh and Love waves, pointing out the distinctions between 3-D cloaking with the superposition of Love and Rayleigh waves and its impact on symmetrization. In particular, prismatic, and cylindrical cloaks are designed according to symmetrization method driven by the weak form solution of Love waves. Time-harmonic simulations and dispersive analyses show that a symmetrized cylindrical cloak, constructed by the 'Maximal' mean, provides significant cloaking protection across all computed frequencies.
