A way to consolidate the approach could be to introduce some aspects into the ESs assessments which might have been neglected so far. Such aspects are mainly: (1) a focus on the complex ESs relations (such as synergies and trade-offs) that can impact the supply of multiple SESs (soil ecosystem services), and (2) focus on potential drivers of SESs relations. We applied bivariate and multivariate approaches to SESs indicators derived from a solid pedological knowledge of the Emilia-Romagna study area in NE Italy. We focused on 7 SES: (1) habitat for soil organisms, (2) filtering and buffering capacity, (3) contribution to microclimate regulation, (4) carbon sequestration, (5) food provision potential, (6) water regulation, and (7) water storage capacity. These SESs were estimated through a combination of point observations, and pedotransfer functions (PTF) estimates spatialised over the area of interest with geostatistical simulation techniques. We found that SESs bivariate spatial relations could be categorised mainly in three types of patterns at regional scale, either: (1) synergistic SESs relations dominating at the region level, (2) trade-offs dominating, or (3) both kind of relations more or less equally frequent. Interestingly, in some cases the dominant regional SESs relation switched at a local level, and such switch was driven by soil properties. For the multivariate case (>2 SESs), two main results are highlighted. First, the combination of properties of some soils is so characteristic that they conform a single SESs bundle, as in the case of the rich SOM soils of alluvial origin in the NE of the region with low agricultural productivity, but high value in regulating SESs. Secondly, some SESs such as potential food provision and water regulation are more important than others to determine locations with high multi-services value at a regional level. This suggests that attention must be paid when ascribing high multi-services value locations as this is not independent of SESs relations. Overall, our results highlight the importance of soils in the potential supply of ESs and show that SESs relations are useful in the implementation of the concept in environmental assessments.
2. It quantifies the effect of change from annual to perennial crops and the subsequent temporal changes in SOC stocks during the perennial crop cycle. It also presents an empirical model to estimate changes in the SOC content under crops as a function of time, land use, and site characteristics. We used a harmonized global dataset containing paired￢ﾀﾐcomparison empirical values of SOC and different types of perennial crops (perennial grasses, palms, and woody plants) with different end uses: bioenergy, food, other bio￢ﾀﾐproducts, and short rotation coppice. Salient outcomes include: a 20￢ﾀﾐyear period encompassing a change from annual to perennial crops led to an average 20% increase in SOC at 0￢ﾀﾓ30ￂﾠcm (6.0ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ4.6ￂﾠMg/ha gain) and a total 10% increase over the 0￢ﾀﾓ100ￂﾠcm soil profile (5.7ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ10.9ￂﾠMg/ha). A change from natural pasture to perennial crop decreased SOC stocks by 1% over 0￢ﾀﾓ30ￂﾠcm (￢ﾈﾒ2.5ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ4.2ￂﾠMg/ha) and 10% over 0￢ﾀﾓ100ￂﾠcm (￢ﾈﾒ13.6ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ8.9ￂﾠMg/ha). The effect of a land use change from forest to perennial crops did not show significant impacts, probably due to the limited number of plots; but the data indicated that while a 2% increase in SOC was observed at 0￢ﾀﾓ30ￂﾠcm (16.81ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ55.1ￂﾠMg/ha), a decrease in 24% was observed at 30￢ﾀﾓ100ￂﾠcm (￢ﾈﾒ40.1ￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ16.8ￂﾠMg/ha). Perennial crops generally accumulate SOC through time, especially woody crops; and temperature was the main driver explaining differences in SOC dynamics, followed by crop age, soil bulk density, clay content, and depth. We present empirical evidence showing that the FAO perennialization strategy is reasonable, underscoring the role of perennial crops as a useful component of climate change mitigation strategies.</p
MISCANTHUS", "QH301 Biology", "Carbon Dynamics in Peatland Ecosystems", "SEQUESTRATION", "01 natural sciences", "630", "BIOMASS", "862695", "Agricultural and Biological Sciences", "Soil", "NE/M021327/1", "woody crops", "Soil water", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "Development and Impacts of Bioenergy Crops", "STOCKS", "NE/N017854/1", "SDG 15 - Life on Land", "General Environmental Science", "agriculture", "2. The results of the evaluation by stakeholders are commented all together, without any relation to a specific country. They demonstrate that the results are more likely understood by scientists than by policy makers or farmers. For the latter, the scale of the maps are not relevant with their own interest. The maps of erosion, SOC loss and soil sealing seem to be more easily understood by the stakeholder that the GHG regulation, and the bundles, with which stakeholders are not familiar. To communicate definitions and indicators to stakeholders and gather their opinions, an online questionnaire was developed and widely spread around European soil experts. The agreement of participants with proposed definitions and indicator allocations was demanded and the possibility for text comments was provided. The results showed a high level of agreement with the proposed definitions, only a few were rated distinctively lower than the average and therefore chosen for reformulation. As an interesting pattern, it was observed that rather new terms such as Ecosystem Services or Bundles were rated worse than more established ones. Therefore, STs and SESs require to be assessed using explicit and appropriate methodologies. Indicators are suitable communications tools with stakeholders and the general public because they facilitate the simplification of complex human-environmental systems and provide aggregated information on certain phenomena at the spatial and temporal scale that they represent. Task 2.3 of the SERENA project was aimed at developing harmonised methodologies to evaluate bundles of soil threats (STs) and soil-based ecosystem services (SESs) at different levels. The Deliverable 2.3.1 developed the second step of the harmonization of STs and SESs indicators, whereas this deliverable developed the third step of the global tiered strategy for harmonisation and was mainly focused on the definition of methods for the harmonised assessment of indicators of STs and SESs at the member state (MS) level. The deliverable was focused on soil erosion (ST) and soil erosion control (SES), soil organic carbon (SOC) loss (ST), greenhouse gas (GHG) and climate regulation (SES), and soil sealing (ST) as well as a bundle of STs/SESs. Different cookbooks were developed to provide harmonized approaches/methods for assessing indicators for STs/SESs at national scale.
