However, much less is known about how and why soil cyanobacterial communities change as soil develops over centuries and millennia, and the effects that vegetation have on such communities.</p>  <p>We combined an extensive field survey, including 16 global soil chronosequences across contrasting ecosystems (from deserts to tropical forests), with molecular analyses to investigate how the diversity and abundance of photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic soil cyanobacteria are affected by vegetation change during soil development, over time periods from hundreds to thousands of years.</p>  <p>We show that, in most chronosequences, the abundance, species richness and community composition of soil cyanobacteria are relatively stable as soil develops (from centuries to millennia). Regardless of soil age, forest chronosequences were consistently dominated by nonphotosynthetic cyanobacteria (Vampirovibrionia), while grasslands and shrublands were dominated by photosynthetic cyanobacteria. We modelled data from a global biodiversity database to compare how the abundance of soil-dwelling and above-ground organisms responded to land use and soil properties.</p>                                Results                 <p>We found that land use affects overall abundance differently in soil and above-ground assemblages. The abundance of soil organisms was markedly lower in cropland and plantation habitats than in primary vegetation and pasture. In this study, we assessed habitat quality by using the Syrph The Net database and data on decreasing species richness over a 25-year period for the two largest phytophagous hoverfly genera (Merodon and Cheilosia). Furthermore, within this time frame, we explored congruence between ecological responses (species richness and Biodiversity Maintenance Function for these two genera) and landscape structural changes through correlation analysis. Our results indicate that landscapes have experienced changes in aggregation, isolation/connectivity and landscape diversity, with these parameters being significantly correlated with Cheilosia species richness loss and habitat quality. We conducted a global survey to evaluate the role of climate\uffe2\uff80\uff90 and soil\uffe2\uff80\uff90related variables as predictors of the richness, abundance and community structure of bacteria carrying pmoA and nosZ genes.</p>Location<p>Eighty dryland ecosystems distributed worldwide.</p>Time period<p>From February 2006 to December 2011.</p>Major taxa studied<p>Methanotrophic (carrying the pmoA gene) and denitrifiying (carrying the nosZ gene) bacteria.</p>Methods<p>We used data from a field survey and structural equation modelling to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of climatic (aridity, rainfall seasonality and mean annual temperature) and soil (organic carbon, pH and texture) variables on the total abundance, richness and community structure of microorganisms carrying pmoA and nosZ genes.</p>Results<p>Taxa related to Methylococcus capsulatus or Methylocapsa sp., often associated with mesic environments, were common in global drylands. The abundance and richness of methanotrophs were not associated with climate or soil properties. However, mean annual temperature, rainfall seasonality, organic C, pH and sand content were highly correlated with their community structure. Aridity and soil variables, such as sand content and pH, were correlated with the abundance, community structure and richness of the nosZ bacterial community.</p>Main conclusions<p>Our study provides new insights into the drivers of the abundance, richness and community structure of soil microorganisms carrying pmoA and nosZ genes in drylands worldwide. We highlight how ongoing climate change will alter the structure of soil microorganisms, which might affect the net CH4 exchange and will probably reduce the capacity of dryland soils to carry out the final step of denitrification, favouring net N2O emissions.</p", "keywords": ["2. Kattegat is a waterbody between Denmark and Sweden that receives inflow from the Baltic Sea and direct urban runoff from the metropolitan area of Copenhagen and Malm\u00f6. MPs were measured in 14 continuous transects while steaming between monitoring stations. MP levels tended to be highest close to the Copenhagen-Malm\u00f6 area, albeit this was more obvious from the abundance of particles rather than mass. The outcome of the measurements allowed a rough MP budget in the Danish Straits region, suggesting that urban waste- and stormwater discharges could not be neglected as potential MP source in these waters. The marine samples were collected by pumping and filtering water over 10 \u03bcm steel filters, hereby sampling a total of 19.3 m3. They were prepared and analyzed by FPA-\u03bcFTIR imaging, and the scans interpreted to yield MP size, shape, polymer type, and estimated mass. The average concentration was 103 \u00b1 86 items m-3, corresponding to 23.3 \u00b1 28.3 \u03bcg m-3 (17-286 items m-3; 0.6-84.1 \u03bcg m-3). Most MPs were smaller than 100 \u03bcm and fragments dominated the samples. The carbonyl index was assessed for polyolefins, showing that oxidation increased with decreasing MP size, but did not correlate with distance to urban areas. Ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers are the main producers of nitrous oxide (N2O), but it remains unclear how ammonia oxidizer and denitrifier abundances will respond to N loading and whether their responses can predict N\uffe2\uff80\uff90induced changes in soil N2O emission. By synthesizing 101 field studies worldwide, we showed that N loading significantly increased ammonia oxidizer abundance by 107% and denitrifier abundance by 45%. The increases in both ammonia oxidizer and denitrifier abundances were primarily explained by N loading form, and more specifically, organic N loading had stronger effects on their abundances than mineral N loading. Nitrogen loading increased soil N2O emission by 261%, whereas there was no clear relationship between changes in soil N2O emission and shifts in ammonia oxidizer and denitrifier abundances. Our field\uffe2\uff80\uff90based results challenge the laboratory\uffe2\uff80\uff90based hypothesis that increased ammonia oxidizer and denitrifier abundances by N loading would directly cause higher soil N2O emission. Instead, key abiotic factors (mean annual precipitation, soil pH, soil C:N ratio, and ecosystem type) explained N\uffe2\uff80\uff90induced changes in soil N2O emission. The objective of the patchCrop experiment was to analyze the potential of small-scale diversification, as created by clustering patches of 5 different crops in a single field (\u201ePatchCropping\"), for bridging ecological and farming goals for the weed flora. \nThe PatchCrop experiment was carried out as an on-farm experiment on a typical agricultural farm in NE-Germany. The field with the patch crop design (70 ha) consisted of 30 patches (6x5 field units, of 5.184 m\u00b2 each) under nine different crops organized in 2 different crop rotations and 2 weed control intensities with 3 replications. The weed flora at the PatchCropp field was compared to the weed floras at 6 sole cropped fields in the surrounding the field with the PatchCrop experiment. The 6 reference sole cropping fields had a size between 10 and 46 ha and included 2 weed control intensities analogous to those at the PatchCrop field. Their abundance and diversity is affected by soil properties as well as management. In the On-Farm Tillage Experiment Lietzen, Landkreis M\u00e4rkisch-Oderland, since 1996, two different soil tillage practices, conventional inverting tillage, and reduced non-inverting tillage, are applied to two formerly conventionally tilled halves of a 73 ha field of the Komturei Lietzen. Under each treatment, 21 permanent plots were installed, allowing to analyse the response of different soils, induced by landscape position, to the tillage treatments. The data set describes the abundance and species composition of earthworms, assessed by means of handsorting, between 1997 and 2007 at all plots. In addition, selected soil properties (content clay, cation-exchange capacity) are reported. Forest stands and plot setup:  Study area:  24 forest stands identified (12 larch, 12 oak) in the southern portion of the fenced area. Replicate stands:  Each stand paired with a replicate within 300 m on opposite sides of the fence; stands without replicates within this distance were excluded. Plot establishment: Total plots: 10 circular plots per stand = in total 240 plots (120 inside, 120 outside the fence). Plot size:  Each plot covers 10 m\u00b2, centered on a larch or oak tree.
