We conducted a litter bag study (24 weeks) on a Typic Eutropepts in the humid lowlands to assess the rate of decomposition of Piper aduncum, Imperata cylindrica and Gliricidia sepium leaves under sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). Decomposition rates of piper leaf litter were fastest followed closely by gliricidia, and both lost 50% of the leaf biomass within 10 weeks. Imperata leaf litter decomposed much slower and half-life values exceeded the period of observation. The decomposition patterns were best explained by the lignin plus polyphenol over N ratio which was lowest for piper (4.3) and highest for imperata (24.7). Gliricidia leaf litter released 79 kg N ha(-1), whereas 18 kg N ha(-1) was immobilised in the imperata litter. The mineralization of P was similar for the three species, but piper litter released large amounts of K. The decomposition and nutrient release patterns had significant effects on the soil. The soil contained significantly more water in the previous imperata plots at 13 weeks due to the relative slow decomposition of the leaves. Soil N levels were significantly reduced in the previous imperata plots due to immobilisation of N. Levels of exchangeable K were significantly increased in the previous piper plots due to the large addition of K. It can be concluded that piper leaf litter is a significant and easily decomposable source of K which is an important nutrient for sweet potato. Gliricidia leaf litter contained much N, whereas imperata leaf litter releases relatively little nutrients and keeps the soil more moist. Gliricidia fallow is more attractive than an imperata fallow for it improves the soil fertility and produces fuelwood as additional saleable products.
Polyphenol", "Tropical Legumes", "Leaves", "tropical legumes", "Soil Science", "Nitrogen Mineralization", "Lignin", "n-release", "soil", "Soil", "residues", "C1", "Soil Changes", "nitrogen mineralization", "Chemical-composition", "580", "nutrient release", "Plant Sciences", "Sweet-potato", "Agriculture", "Residues", "Quality", "Agronomy", "Improved Fallow", "quality", "Natural Fallow", "sweet-potato", "Nutrient Release", "300104 Land Capability and Soil Degradation", "chemical-composition", "leaves", "N-release", "770800 Farmland (incl. At 10 sites of each land-use type, which are all part of the Swiss national soil-monitoring network (NABO), Metarhizium spp. were present at 8, 10, and 4 sites, respectively. On average, Metarhizium spp. were most abundant in grassland, followed by forest and then arable land; 349 Metarhizium isolates were collected from the 30 sites, and sequence analyses of the nuclear translation elongation factor 1α gene, as well as microsatellite-based genotyping, revealed the presence of 13 Metarhizium brunneum, 6 Metarhizium robertsii, and 3 Metarhizium guizhouense multilocus genotypes (MLGs). With 259 isolates, M. brunneum was the most abundant species, and significant differences were detected in population structures between forested and unforested sites. Among 15 environmental factors assessed, C:N ratio, basal respiration, total carbon, organic carbon, and bulk density significantly explained the variation among the M. brunneum populations. To address this challenge, we followed the functional land management approach and assessed five soil functions: primary productivity, water regulation and purification, climate regulation, soil biodiversity and nutrient cycling. Soil, management and climate data were collected from 94 sites covering 13 countries, five climatic zones and two land￢ﾀﾐuse types (arable and grassland). This dataset was analysed using the Soil Navigator, a multicriteria decision support system developed to assess the supply of the five soil functions simultaneously. Most sites scored high for two to three soil functions, demonstrating that managing for multifunctionality in soil is possible but that local constraints and trade￢ﾀﾐoffs do exist. Nutrient cycling, biodiversity and climate regulation were less frequently delivered at high capacity than the other two soil functions. Using correlation and co￢ﾀﾐoccurrence analyses, we also found that synergies and trade￢ﾀﾐoffs between soil functions vary among climatic zones and land￢ﾀﾐuse types. Nitrous oxide emissions from a network of agricultural experiments in Europe and Zimbabwe were used to explore the relative importance of site and management controls of emissions. At each site, a selection of management interventions were compared within replicated experimental designs in plot based experiments. Arable experiments were conducted at Beano in Italy, El Encin in Spain, Foulum in Denmark, Logￃﾥrden in Sweden, Maulde in Belgium, Paulinenaue in Germany, Harare in Zimbabwe and Tulloch in the UK. Nitrous oxide emissions were measured at each site over a period of at least two years using static chambers. Emissions varied widely between sites and as a result of manipulation treatments. Average site emissions (throughout the study period) varied between 0.04 and 21.21 kg N2O-N ha￢ﾈﾒ1 yr￢ﾈﾒ1, with the largest fluxes and variability associated with the grassland sites. Total nitrogen addition was found to be the single most important determinant of emissions, accounting for 15% of the variance (using linear regression) in the data from the arable sites (p < 0.0001), and 77% in the grassland sites. The annual emissions from arable sites were significantly greater than those that would be predicted by IPCC default emission factors. Variability in N2O within sites that occurred as a result of manipulation treatments was greater than that resulting from site to site and year to year variation, highlighting the importance of management interventions in contributing to greenhouse gas mitigation.

Technology", "Atmospheric sciences", "550", "FILLED PORE-SPACE;N2O EMISSIONS;GRASSLAND SYSTEMS;CO2 EMISSIONS;SOILS;MANAGEMENT;FLUXES;FERTILIZATION;CROP;NO", "Economics", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "Environmental protection", "630", "Agricultural and Biological Sciences", "Engineering", "Life", "QH501-531", "FERTILIZATION", "Arable land", "QH540-549.5", "2. Soil organic carbon (SOC) data were collected from six long-term experiment sites in the upland of northern China. Various fertilization (e.g. inorganic fertilizations and combined inorganic-manure applications) and cropping (e.g. mono- and double-cropping) practices have been applied at these sites. Our analyses indicate that long-term applications of inorganic nitrogen-phosphorus (NP) and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) result in a significant increase in SOC at the sites with the double-cropping systems. The applications of inorganic NP and/or NPK combined with manure lead to a significantly increasing trend in SOC content at all the sites. However, the application of NPK with crop residue incorporation can only increase SOC content in the warm-temperate areas with the double-cropping systems. Regression analyses suggest that soil carbon sequestration responds linearly to carbon input at all the sites. Conversion rates of carbon input to SOC decrease significantly with an increase of annual accumulative temperature or precipitation, showing lower rates (6.8%￢ﾀﾓ7.7%) in the warm-temperate areas than in the mid-temperate areas (15.8%￢ﾀﾓ31.0%).

Carbon sequestration", "Organic chemistry", "Carbon Dynamics in Peatland Ecosystems", "Crop", "Agricultural and Biological Sciences", "Fertilizer", "Engineering", "Life", "Crop rotation", "QH501-531", "Soil water", "Multiple cropping", "Arable land", "QH540-549.5", "2. At the same time, the current field-scale cultivated land quality (CLQ) evaluation cannot meet the work requirements of the CLBP. To this end, this study selected 24 newly added farmland in Fuping County and performed eight different high quality farming layer construction experiments to improve the CLQ. A new comprehensive model was constructed on a field scale to evaluate the CLQ using different tests from multi-dimensional perspectives of soil fertility, engineering, environment, and ecology, and to determine the best test mode. The results showed that after the test, around 62% of the cultivated land improved by one level, and the average cultivated land quality level and quality index of the test area increased by 0.63 and 30.63, respectively. The treatment of “woody peat + rotten crop straw + biostimulation regulator II + conventional fertilization” had the best effect on the improvement of organic matter, soil aggregates, and soil microbial activity, and was the best treatment method. In general, application of soil amendments, such as woody peat when constructing high quality farmland, could quickly improve CLQ, and field-scale CLQ evaluation model constructed from a multi-dimensional perspective could accurately assess the true quality of farmland and allow managers to improve and manage arable land resources under CLBP.

Scale (ratio)", "cultivated land quality evaluation", "Agricultural engineering", "Agricultural and Biological Sciences", "Engineering", "Soil Evaluation", "Agricultural land", "Soil water", "Arable land", "cultivated land quality evaluation; field scale; high-quality farming layer; woody peat", "2.

In this study, we investigate the abundance and population structure of Metarhizium spp. in three land-use types—arable land, grassland, and forest—to provide detailed information on habitat selection and the factors that drive the occurrence and abundance of Metarhizium spp. in soil. The information gained in this study will support the selection of best-adapted isolates as biological control agents and will provide additional criteria for the adaptation or development of new pest control strategies.

2. The goal was to see how nutrient deficiencies affect soil fertility and harvest yields in sandy soils. In 1949, long-term field experiment D4 was split into two subfields: D41 and D42. Due to their different treatments, the datasets for these two subfields are available separately.
D41 has maintained the same treatments since the beginning of the experiment, reducing the number to four replicates in 1949, so that D42 could be given an alternate treatment (further information in the field description for D42 https://doi.org/10.20387/bonares-eprk-bj95).
Since 1957, the crop rotation has been potatoes - spring barley - silage corn – spring barley. In 1959 the accumulation of nematodes led to the decision to include silo corn (previously not farmed) to be included in the crop rotation extending the period between potato seasons to three years. The crop rotation continued afterwards according to the original plan.
The harvest plots in the geodata represent the standard harvest plots for root crops and grains, which have maintained their size since 2000 (excluding in 2018). Before 1998, the sizes of these plots varied over the years. The experimental site was founded in 1936 by Prof. Kurt Opitz is located about 30 kilometres south of Berlin. This site represents typical farming conditions of the young moraine landscapes of the Weichselian glaciation of Northeast Germany. According to the German classification of soil-climate spaces, the experimental site is located in the area of “dry-warm diluvial soils of East German lowlands” (diluvial: soils developed in glacial sediments). Within this area, soil values of the “German soil taxation framework” of less than 30 out of a maximum 100 are common.
Thyrow is located at approximately 42 m above sea level on the southern edge of the Teltow, a Weichselian ground moraine plateau. The slope is predominantly flat at 2 %. The dominant soil type for this is location is a Retisol developed in a sand over a deep loam. As typical for ground moraines the boundaries between the sandy and loamy layer vary intensely between 60 cm to 200 cm. This causes small-scale differences in water and nutrient resources especially of the subsoil. The plant available water capacity of the soil in the effective root zone (60 – 80 cm deep) fluctuates between 50 to 150 mm. These soils are at high risk of nutrient leaching, acidification and surface siltation because of the low clay and humus content of the topsoil.
Due to the soil’s low water-holding capacity, the crop yields at the Thyrow Field Station show great fluctuations dependent on weather conditions. The climatic water balance during the growing period is negative and the overall low water availability at this location limits the crop yields. Mean annual temperature for the period 1991-2020 was measured to be 9.7°C, with annual precipitation 533 mm. Annual crop yields are particularly negatively affected by low precipitation from April to June.
The two areas that are managed by the research station are separated by the Thyrower Dorfstraße (Landesstraße 795). The main experimental area, where the long-term experiments are conducted, is located on the farm (Hof) side, along with two other trials for the implementation of field experiments. Northwest of the Landesstraße there is another experimental area (Schlag 3), where other experiments are conducted to answer questions about differing agricultural systems, soil management, cultivar suitability, and fertilization.

Soil classes according to German Soil Taxation: S4D, Sl5D, Sl4D
Soil textural class: silty sand
Mean annual temperature: 9.7°C (1991-2020) / 9.2 °C (1981-2010) / 8.9° C (1971-2000)
Mean annual precipitation: 533 mm (1991-2020) / 510 mm (1981-2010) / 495 mm (1971-2000)
The geodata of the entire premises (Thyrower Hof and Schlag 3) The assessment of soil values has been done according to the soil valuation law (Bodenschätzungsgesetz, BodSchätzG) with an established method for mapping and evaluating the natural productivity of all agriculturally areas including arable and grassland in Germany. The soil quality estimates result in values that indicate the ratio of the productivity of the estimated to the most productive agricultural area with a maximum value of 100 for arable land and 88 for grassland. The values are determined from information on soil type, geological formation of the soil, status level, and general climate and water conditions. The results of the assessment of soil values are available in digital form via the official real estate cadastre information system (Amtliches Liegenschaftskatasterinformationssystem, ALKIS) and are available throughout Germany (with the exception of Berlin).
