Here, we conducted a manipulative experiment in a meadow grassland on the Tibetan Plateau to investigate the effects of GE on Rs. The exclusion of livestock significantly increased soil moisture and above\uffe2\uff80\uff90ground biomass, but it decreased soil temperature, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and Rs. Regression analysis indicated that the effects of GE on Rs were mainly due to changes in soil temperature, soil moisture, and MBC. Compared with the grazed blocks, GE significantly decreased soil carbon release by 23.6% over the growing season and 21.4% annually, but it increased the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of Rs by 6.5% and 14.2% for the growing season and annually respectively. Cover crops are a conservation management practice that can provoke changes in soil quality which requires evaluation. Stratification ratios of soil properties such as soil organic C and labile C fractions have been proposed for the assessment of soil quality under different soil management systems. Our objective was to study the effect of different cover crop management on various soil parameters and their stratification ratios. We evaluated three different soil managements in a Typic Haploxerept from NE Spain: conventional tillage (CT); 5\uffe2\uff80\uff90y continuous cover crop of resident vegetation (RV); and 4\uffe2\uff80\uff90y continuous cover crop of Festuca longifolia Thuill., followed by 1\uffe2\uff80\uff90y Bromus catharticus L. after resowing (BV). We monitored soil organic C, particulate organic C, water soluble C, potentially mineralizable N, microbial biomass C, \uffce\uffb2\uffe2\uff80\uff90glucosidase and urease enzymatic activities, and water stable aggregates at 0\uffe2\uff80\uff932.5, 2.5\uffe2\uff80\uff935, 5\uffe2\uff80\uff9315, 15\uffe2\uff80\uff9325, and 25\uffe2\uff80\uff9345\uffe2\uff80\uff89cm soil depths. We calculated soil depth stratification ratios of those soil properties. Resident cover crop increased microbiological properties, labile C fractions, and aggregation with respect to conventional tillage at 0\uffe2\uff80\uff932.5 and 2.5\uffe2\uff80\uff935\uffe2\uff80\uff89cm soil depths. However, for Bromus cover crop the same soil properties were lower than for the resident cover crop at 0\uffe2\uff80\uff932.5\uffe2\uff80\uff89cm depth. Organic inputs are expected to have advantages over fertilizers by affecting many biochemical properties controlling nutrient cycling. Our study examined changes in soil C and N, C and N mineralization, microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN), and particulate organic matter (POM) in a P-limiting soil in western Kenya after applications of organic residues and fertilizers to overcome P limitation to crops. Leaf biomass from six different tree (shrub) species was incorporated into the soil at 5 Mg ha\u22121 for five consecutive maize growing seasons, over 2.5 years. Triple superphosphate was applied separately at 0, 10, 25, 50, and 150 kg P ha\u22121 in combination with 120 kg N ha\u22121 as urea. Soil inorganic N, soil organic C, mineralizable N, and total C in all POM fractions and total N in the 53- to 250-\u03bcm POM fraction increased following addition of all organic residues compared to the control. Whether there was an advantage of organic residue incorporation over inorganic fertilizer use depended on the soil parameter studied, the organic residue and the rate of fertilization. Most differences were found in N mineralization where 14.4\u201321.6 mg N kg\u22121 was mineralized in fertilizer treatments compared to 25.2\u201330.5 mg N kg\u22121 in organic residue treatments. C and N mineralization and the 53- to 250-\u03bcm POM fractions were the most sensitive parameters, correlating with most of the studied parameters. However there is little knowledge on long-term effects on soil properties, notably under Mediterranean climate. Moreover, biological indicators such as micro-arthropods can be used for a cost-effective analysis of soil biodiversity. Here, we studied physical and biological properties of a sandy loam soil in central Italy under a 4-year rotation of maize\u2013durum wheat\u2013cover crop\u2013sunflower\u2013durum wheat\u2013cover crop during 15\u00a0years. We analysed the effects of two tillage systems, conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT); two N fertilization rates, without N and medium N level; and three soil covers: cash crop residue as control, Brassica juncea and Vicia villosa. Results show that no tillage increased soil organic matter content in the upper 10-cm layer (3.31%) compared to the conventional tillage (2.19%). No tillage also improved structure stability and lowered bulk density in the same soil profile. No-tillage systems showed higher soil microbial biomass (+71%) and respiration (+44%), and a higher abundance and diversity of micro-arthropods. We conclude that no tillage is an effective measure to improve the physical and biological quality of soil in Mediterranean conditions. No-tillage positive effect can be enhanced by the right choice of N fertilization and cover crop cultivation. Bio-indicators such as micro-arthropods can be very predictive of soil habitability by organisms.", "keywords": ["2. The most suitable plant species must be identified before the potential biomass production in a particular region can be quantified. This in turn depends on the degree of climatic adaptation by those species. In the range of climates present in New Zealand, biomass crop growth has less restriction due to water deficit or low winter temperature than in most world regions. Biomass production for energy use in New Zealand would be best utilised as transport fuel since 70\uffc2\uffa0% of the country\uffe2\uff80\uff99s electricity generation is already renewable, but nearly all of its transport fossil fuel is imported. There is a good economic development case for transport biofuel production using waste streams and biomass crops. This review identified the most suitable crop species and assessed their production potential for use within the climatic range present in New Zealand. Information from published work was used as a basis for selecting appropriate crops in a 2-year selection and evaluation process. Where there were knowledge gaps, the location-specific selections were further evaluated by field measurements. Forest restoration plays an important role in the recovery of soil quality after clear-cutting, but the effects of different regeneration procedures on forest soil quality remain poorly known in Northeast China.AimsWe assessed the effects of three regeneration procedures, i.e., (i) naturally regenerated birch forest, (ii) spruce plantation, and (iii) naturally regenerated broadleaf species interspersed with planted larch on soil quality and microbial activity in the Changbai Mountain area. An old-growth mixed broadleaf/Korean pine forest was used as a reference.MethodsPhysical and chemical properties and microbial biomass were recorded in the soil. Basal respiration and carbon mineralization were measured with a closed-jar alkali-absorption method.ResultsMicrobial biomass was smaller in the birch forest and spruce plantation than in the old-growth and the mixed broadleaf/larch forests. Moreover, microbial biomass, microbial quotient, and potentially mineralizable carbon were larger in the mixed broadleaf/larch than in the birch forest, while no difference was found between spruce plantation and birch forest for microbial biomass and microbial quotient. Basal respiration and metabolic quotient were larger in the birch forest as compared to the three other forest types, indicating a larger energy need for maintenance of the microbial community and lower microbial activity in the naturally regenerated birch forest.ConclusionMixed broadleaf/larch forest displayed a larger microbial biomass and higher substrate use efficiency of the soil microbial community than either naturally regenerated birch forest or spruce plantation. Little attention has been focused on soil quality following conversion of agricultural lands to biomass crops. Here, we assessed the impact of a 10-year-old short-rotation coppice (SRC) poplar stand on the main soil chemical parameters, microbial biomass carbon, soil respiration, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), compared with intensive agricultural and uncultivated systems. Three different harvest frequencies of poplar SRC (annual T1, biannual T2 and triennial T3 cutting cycles) were evaluated. Multivariate analysis showed that poplar SRC improved soil quality compared with intensive agricultural and uncultivated systems. T1 and T2 positively affected AMF inoculum potential and root colonisation of a co-occurring plant species, while T3 improved the majority of soil chemical and biochemical parameters. Moreover, three different AMF morphospecies belonging to the genera Glomus and Scutellospora were found in poplar SRC, while morphospecies belonging exclusively to genera Glomus were recorded in intensive agricultural and uncultivated systems. Therefore, the objectives of this study were i) to analyse the on-farm effects of different nitrogen fertilization sources on soil respiration, ii) to explore the effect of fertilization on soil respiration sensitivity to soil temperature (T) and iii) to assess the effect of the different fertilization regimes on the soil C balance. We hypothesized that i) the soil CO2 emission dynamics in Mediterranean irrigated cropping systems were mainly affected by fertilization management and T and ii) fertilization affected the soil C budget via different C inputs and CO2 efflux. Four fertilization systems (farmyard manure, cattle slurry, cattle slurry\u00a0+\u00a0mineral, and mineral) were compared in a double-crop rotation based on silage maize (Zea mays L.) and a mixture of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and oats (Avena sativa L.). The research was performed in the dairy district of Arborea, in the coastal zone of Sardinia (Italy), from May 2011 to May 2012. The soil was a Psammentic Palexeralfs with a sandy texture (940\u00a0g\u00a0sand\u00a0kg\u2212\u00a01). The soil total respiration (SR), heterotrophic respiration (Rh), T and soil water content (SWC) were simultaneously measured in situ. The soil C balance was computed considering the Rh C losses and the soil C inputs from fertilizer and crop residues. The results showed that the maximum soil CO2 emission rates soon after the application of organic fertilizer reached values up to 12\u00a0\u03bcmol\u00a0m\u2212\u00a02\u00a0s\u2212\u00a01. On average, the manure fertilizer showed significantly higher CO2 emissions, which resulted in a negative annual C balance (\u2212\u00a02.9\u00a0t\u00a0ha\u2212\u00a01). T also affected the soil respiration temporal dynamics during the summer, consistently with results obtained in other temperate climatic regions that are characterized by wet summers and contrary to results from rainfed Mediterranean systems where the summer SR and Rh are constrained by the low SWC. The sensitivity of soil respiration to temperature significantly increased with C input from fertilizer. In conclusion, this research supported the hypotheses tested. Furthermore, the results indicated that i) soil CO2 efflux was significantly affected by fertilization management and T, and ii) fertilization with manure increased the soil respiration and resulted in a significantly negative soil C budget. The aim was to investigate the effects of the climatic changes predicted by IPCC models for the coming decades on trace element concentration and accumulation in aboveground biomass, plant litter, and soil. Warming increased concentrations and aboveground accumulation of some trace elements related to plant root uptake, such as Al, As, Cr, Cu, and partially Pb. This effect was more general in E. multiflora than in G. alypum. The stronger effects were increases in Al leaf concentrations (42%) and aboveground accumulation (500gha(-1)) in E. multiflora, in As stem biomass accumulation (0.2gha(-1)) in E. multiflora, and in Cr leaf concentrations (51%) in G. alypum and stem aboveground accumulation in E. multiflora (1.1gha(-1)). These species-specific increases were related to greater retranslocation, photosynthetic capacity and growth in E. multiflora than in G. alypum. Warming decreased the concentrations of some trace elements in leaf litter, implying the existence of an increased leaf retranslocation. Drought increased As (40%) and Cd (55%) in E. multiflora stems, whereas it decreased Cu (50%) in leaves, Ni (28%) in stems and Pb (32%) in leaf litter of G. alypum. The increasing concentrations of some trace elements in E. multiflora and not in G. alypum were related to a greater growth reduction in E. multiflora than in G. alypum. Warming increased As soil solubility (67%) and decreased total soil As (21%). Those changes were related to a greater Fe mobilization in warming plot and to a greater plant capture. Drought increased Hg (350%) concentrations in soils but had no significant effects on trace element accumulation in aboveground biomass. The different response to warming and drought in the two dominant species implies uneven changes in the quality of the plant tissues that may have implications for herbivores. In this work, bench-scale burning of sphagnum peat conditioned to different values of IC and bulk densities were conducted in the laboratory environment. Mass loss rate, spread rate and transient emissions of 20 gas species and particles (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) were simultaneously investigated. We found that peat with 50% moisture content can self-sustain smouldering propagation if IC is less than 40%, or its bulk density is lower than 287.5\u202fkg\u202fm\u22123. Increasing IC or bulk density decreases peat mass loss rate and spread rate. High IC peat releases lower gas fluxes (especially for CH4 and NH3) throughout the experiment. In the ignition stage, increasing IC leads to an increase in particles with diameter between 1 and 2.5\u202f\u03bcm; in the fire spread stage, IC has no influence on the particle fluxes. In contrast, increasing bulk density delays both gas and particle emission fluxes without altering the smoke composition significantly. Results showed a rapid response of microbial biomass to a bacterial dominance independent of residue quality. Vetch had the highest diversity index, while the fertilized treatment had the lowest one. The experimental plots were under conventional or reduced tillage with straw retained, removed or burnt. Wet sieving was done to study organic carbon and soil composition divided in four fractions: 1) large macroaggregates, 2) small macroaggregates, 3) microaggregates and 4) silt and clay. To further estimate the stability of carbon in the soil, coarse particulate organic matter, microaggregates and silt and clay were isolated from the macroaggregates. Total carbon stock in the topsoil (equivalent to 200 kg m(-2)) was slightly lower under reduced tillage (5.0 kg m(-2)) than under conventional tillage (5.2 kg m(-2)). Reduced tillage changed the soil composition by increasing the percentage of macroaggregates and decreasing the percentage of microaggregates. There was no evidence of differences in the composition of the macroaggregates or carbon content in the macroaggregate-occluded fractions. However, due to the higher total amount of macroaggregates in the soil, more carbon was bound to the macroaggregate-occluded microaggregates in reduced tillage. Compared with plowed soil, the density of deep burrowing earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) was considerably higher under reduced tillage and positively associated with the percentage of large macroaggregates. The total amount of microbial biomass carbon did not differ between the treatments. Straw management did not have discernible effects either on soil aggregation or soil carbon stock. We conclude that although reduced tillage can improve clay soil structure, generally the chances to increase topsoil carbon sequestration by reduced tillage or straw management practices appear limited in cereal monoculture systems of the boreal region. Understanding the relationships among EEA and SOC, soil N (TN), and soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) under N fertilization would enable modeling of the influence of EEA on SOC decomposition. Based on 65 published studies, we synthesized the activities of \u03b1-1,4-glucosidase (AG), \u03b2-1,4-glucosidase (BG), \u03b2- d -cellobiosidase (CBH), \u03b2-1,4-xylosidase (BX), \u03b2-1,4-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG), leucine amino peptidase (LAP), urease (UREA), acid phosphatase (AP), phenol oxidase (PHO), and peroxidase (PEO) in response to N fertilization. The proxy variables for hydrolytic C acquisition enzymes (C-acq), N acquisition (N-acq), and oxidative decomposition (OX) were calculated as the sum of AG, BG, CBH and BX; AG and LAP; PHO and PEO, respectively. The relationships between response ratios (RRs) of EEA and SOC, TN, or MBC were explored when they were reported simultaneously. Results showed that N fertilization significantly increased CBH, C-acq, AP, BX, BG, AG, and UREA activities by 6.4, 9.1, 10.6, 11.0, 11.2, 12.0, and 18.6%, but decreased PEO, OX and PHO by 6.1, 7.9 and 11.1%, respectively. N fertilization enhanced SOC and TN by 7.6% and 15.3%, respectively, but inhibited MBC by 9.5%. Significant positive correlations were found only between the RRs of C-acq and MBC, suggesting that changes in combined hydrolase activities might act as a proxy for MBC under N fertilization. In contrast with other variables, the RRs of AP, MBC, and TN showed unidirectional trends under different edaphic, environmental, and physiological conditions. Our results provide the first comprehensive set of evidence of how hydrolase and oxidase activities respond to N fertilization in various ecosystems. The fertility of Cerrado soils is low and, consequently, phosphorus levels as well. Phosphorus is required at every metabolic stage of the plant, as it plays a role in the processes of protein and energy synthesis and influences the photosynthetic process. This study evaluated the influence of cover crops and phosphorus rates on soil chemical and biological properties after two consecutive years of common bean. The study analyzed an Oxisol in Selv\uffc3\uffadria (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil), in a randomized block, split plot design, in a total of 24 treatments with three replications. The plot treatments consisted of cover crops (millet, pigeon pea, crotalaria, velvet bean, millet + pigeon pea, millet + crotalaria, and millet + velvet bean) and one plot was left fallow. The subplots were represented by phosphorus rates applied as monoammonium phosphate (0, 60 and 90 kg ha-1 P2O5). In August 2011, the soil chemical properties were evaluated (pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potential acidity, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation) as well as biological variables (carbon of released CO2, microbial carbon, metabolic quotient and microbial quotient). After two years of cover crops in rotation with common bean, the cover crop biomass had not altered the soil chemical properties and barely influenced the microbial activity. The biomass production of millet and crotalaria (monoculture or intercropped) was highest. Although negative priming has been observed in many studies, most of these are long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term incubation experiments which do not account for the interactions between environmentally weathered PyC and native SOC. Here, the aim was to assess the impact of environmentally weathered PyC on native SOC mineralization at different time points in LUC from arable crops to short rotation coppice (SRC) willow. At eight SRC willow plantations in England, with ages of 3\uffe2\uff80\uff9322\uffc2\uffa0years, soil amended 18\uffe2\uff80\uff9322\uffc2\uffa0months previously with PyC was compared with unamended control soil. Cumulative CO2 flux was measured weekly from incubated soil at 0\uffe2\uff80\uff935\uffc2\uffa0cm depth, and soil\uffe2\uff80\uff90surface CO2 flux was also measured in the field. For the incubated soil, cumulative CO2 flux was significantly higher from soil containing weathered PyC than the control soil for seven of the eight sites. Across all sites, the mean cumulative CO2 flux was 21% higher from soil incubated with weathered PyC than the control soil. These results indicate the potential for positive priming in the surface 5\uffc2\uffa0cm of soil independent of changes in soil properties following LUC to SRC willow production. However, no net effect on CO2 flux was observed in the field, suggesting this increase in CO2 is offset by a contrasting PyC\uffe2\uff80\uff90induced effect at a different soil depth or that different effects were observed under laboratory and field conditions. As amostras de solo foram coletadas em duas profundidades (0-5 e 5-20 cm), no in\uffc3\uffadcio da esta\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o chuvosa, em \uffc3\uffa1reas sob cultivo de videira (Vitis vinifera), entrelinha e linha, cultivos anuais (soja) e em uma \uffc3\uffa1rea de vegeta\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o nativa de Cerrad\uffc3\uffa3o. Foram avaliados o carbono da biomassa microbiana (CBM), carbono prontamente mineraliz\uffc3\uffa1vel e as atividades das enzimas beta-glucosidase, fosfatase \uffc3\uffa1cida e arilsulfatase. Nas duas profundidades avaliadas, os sistemas de uso do solo com culturas perenes e anuais apresentaram redu\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es m\uffc3\uffa9dias de 70 % no CBM, em rela\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o \uffc3\uffa0 \uffc3\uffa1rea sob vegeta\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o nativa. O manejo diferenciado na entrelinha do parreiral e a utiliza\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do capim-p\uffc3\uffa9-de-galinha (Eleusine indica), como cobertura viva, proporcionaram aumentos no C mineraliz\uffc3\uffa1vel e na atividade das enzimas beta-glucosidase e arilsulfatase nas duas profundidades. The results showed that tillage had significant effects on soil properties and soil microbial communities. In no-tillage (NT), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), total N, microbial biomass carbon/soil organic carbon (MBC/SOC), total microbes, and arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi increased, while actinomycetes, G+/G- bacteria ratio and monounsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids (MUFA/STFA) decreased, compared with those in conventional tillage (CT). The organic fertilizer treatments improved soil aggregate stability and soil microbiological properties compared with CK and NPK treatments. Compared with the NPK treatment, soil treated with LSNPK had a significant increase of 27.1% in 5-3 mm dry aggregates. The &gt; 5 mm water stable aggregates treated with CNPK increased by 6.5% compared to the NPK. Soil microbial biomass C and N and urease activity were significantly increased in CNPK by 42.0, 54.6 and 19.8%, respectively. Foram selecionadas quatro \uffc3\uffa1reas representativas da regi\uffc3\uffa3o, de 0,5 ha cada, sendo: (a) Campo nativo, sem queima nos \uffc3\uffbaltimos 50 anos (CN); (b) Campo nativo submetido \uffc3\uffa0 queima tradicional (CNQ), ambas, pastagens naturais; (c) Mata natural com predomin\uffc3\uffa2ncia de Araucaria angustifolia (MATA); e (d) Reflorestamento de Pinus taeda com oito anos (PINUS). Para tanto, coletaram-se seis amostras, compostas de nove subamostras de solo em cada \uffc3\uffa1rea, na profundidade de 0-5 cm, em dezembro de 2002. Para avaliar o CBM, foi utilizado o m\uffc3\uffa9todo da fumiga\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o-extra\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o. O C-CO2 foi determinado em laborat\uffc3\uffb3rio. Os maiores valores de libera\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o de C-CO2 foram encontrados na MATA e no PINUS, seguidos de CNQ e CN, respectivamente. Os maiores valores de CBM, COT e rela\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o CBM:COT foram encontrados na MATA, n\uffc3\uffa3o tendo as demais \uffc3\uffa1reas estudadas apresentado diferen\uffc3\uffa7as entre si. O qCO2 foi maior no PINUS, seguido de CNQ, em compara\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o com MATA e CN. Este trabalho objetivou determinar a influ\uffc3\uffaancia das plantas de cobertura crotal\uffc3\uffa1ria (Crotalaria juncea), guandu (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp), mucuna-preta (Mucuna aterrima), sorgo-vassoura (Sorghum technicum) e pousio nos atributos biol\uffc3\uffb3gicos de solo cultivado com feij\uffc3\uffa3o e milho org\uffc3\uffa2nicos, sob semeadura direta (SD) e preparo convencional (PC). O trabalho foi conduzido em Santo Ant\uffc3\uffb4nio de Goi\uffc3\uffa1s-GO, em Latossolo Vermelho distr\uffc3\uffb3fico, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repeti\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es. Em novembro de 2003 foram instalados quatro experimentos, dois em SD e dois em PC, sendo um com feij\uffc3\uffa3o e outro com milho em cada sistema. Amostragens de solo das parcelas e de uma mata pr\uffc3\uffb3xima aos experimentos foram realizadas em novembro de 2007, nas camadas de 0,00-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m, para determina\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do teor de C org\uffc3\uffa2nico total (COT), carbono da biomassa microbiana (CBM), respira\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o basal do solo (RBS), quociente metab\uffc3\uffb3lico (qCO2) e quociente microbiano (qMIC). Objetivou-se, neste trabalho avaliar os atributos biol\uffc3\uffb3gicos (carbono da biomassa microbiana, respira\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o basal e quociente microbiano), al\uffc3\uffa9m do teor de carbono org\uffc3\uffa2nico, poss\uffc3\uffadveis indicadores das altera\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es na qualidade do solo impostas pelos diferentes sistemas de manejo, em rela\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o ao cerrado nativo, em sistema agrossilvopastoril, no noroeste de Minas Gerais. Foram coletadas amostras, nas profundidades de 0-5, 5-20 e 20-40 cm, de um Latossolo Vermelho Distr\uffc3\uffb3fico t\uffc3\uffadpico (LVd), entre os munic\uffc3\uffadpios de Vazante e Paracatu. Os sistemas foram selecionados segundo o hist\uffc3\uffb3rico de uso: (1) CN- cerrado nativo (testemunha); (2) EA- eucalipto + arroz (ano zero do sistema agrossilvopastoril, plantados ap\uffc3\uffb3s o desmatamento da vegeta\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o nativa de cerrado); (3) ES-eucalipto + soja (ano um do sistema, semeadura da soja em substitui\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o ao arroz); (4) EP- eucalipto + pastagem (ano dois do sistema, com pastagem de Brachiaria brizantha Stapf., para a engorda do gado de corte); (5) EPG- eucalipto + pastagem + gado de corte (ano tr\uffc3\uffaas do sistema, com a introdu\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do gado de corte); (6) PP- pastagem plantada de Brachiaria brizantha Stapf.; e (7) EC- eucalipto no sistema convencional no espa\uffc3\uffa7amento de 2,0 x 3,0 m. O carbono org\uffc3\uffa2nico e o carbono da biomassa microbiana apresentaram valores mais elevados na camada superficial (0-5cm), em rela\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o \uffc3\uffa0s demais, em todos os sistemas. O carbono org\uffc3\uffa2nico mostrou altera\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o substancial em rela\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o aos sistemas estudados e \uffc3\uffa0s profundidades, revelando seu potencial como indicador da qualidade do solo em termos de reflexos das modifica\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es impostas pelo manejo. At Nashua, we measured available N, potential net N mineralization and microbial biomass C (MBC) throughout the growing season; all were significantly higher in the CCOA system. At both sites, post\uffe2\uff80\uff90harvest N stocks, and soil organic C (SOC) concentrations were significantly higher in systems containing alfalfa. Grain yield was most strongly correlated with soil N properties. At Nashua, N fertilizer additions resulted in significantly lower soil pH (0\uffe2\uff80\uff90 to 15\uffe2\uff80\uff90cm depth) and lower exchangeable Ca, Mg, and K and cation exchange capacity (CEC) in the CC and CCOA systems. In an undisturbed prairie reference site for Nashua, low available N, low pH, and high CEC suggested a strong influence of the vegetation on nutrient cycling.
