The experiment reported in this paper was undertaken to study the basic potential of phytoextraction of Brassica napus (canola) and Raphanus sativus (radish) grown on a multi-metal contaminated soil in the framework of a pot-experiment. Chlorophyll contents and gas exchanges were measured during the experiment; the heavy metal phytoextraction efficiency of canola and radish were also determined and the phytoextraction coefficient for each metal calculated. Data indicated that both species are moderately tolerant to heavy metals and that radish is more so than canola. These species showed relatively low phytoremediation potential of multicontaminated soils. This work reviewed seven important European LCA studies in a sensitivity analysis approach in order to get a better understanding of the roots of such a debate for three major biofuels in European production: rape methyl ester and ethanol from wheat and sugar beet. Global trends and variability of energy and GHG balances were depicted and completed with a sensitivity analysis carried out for each methodological and data parameter, which allowed making recommendations on the carrying out of LCA in a policy-making or a biofuels comparison context. Methodological choices, and especially allocation rule, appeared as key elements for results variation with influences on balances up to 149%; system expansion approach was identified as the most relevant rule since it integrates the market potential and the environmental interest of by-products promotion, which was pointed out as a crucial point for biofuels sustainability. The influence of local specificity for cultivation data was evaluated up to 167%, which puts too large geographical coverage in question. Modelling uncertainties due to N2O emissions from soils showed influences from 17 to 46%, which represents a crucial challenge for research and for LCA results accuracy. Approximations evaluation pointed out the need to integrate agricultural machinery into the assessment. The residues studied were obtained by growing an oilseed rape crop at two levels of N fertilisation, 0 and 270 kg N ha\u22121. The study was carried out using two types of experiment: \ufb01eld plots and cylinders \ufb01lled with disturbed soil and inserted into the soil. The decomposition of the residues was followed using an approach involving the dynamics of both carbon and nitrogen, the parameters measured being the CO2 emitted from the soil, the soil mineral N content, the C present in soluble form or in the form of microbial biomass, and the C and N present in the form of plant residues. The two residues studied, of similar biochemical composition, and differing only in their N content, were rapidly mineralised: approximately 50% of the carbon in the residues was decomposed during the \ufb01rst two months following incorporation into the soil. The carbon mineralised in the form of CO2 was largely related to the C present in the residues, no relationship having been found with the C present in soluble form or in the form of microbial biomass. Calculation of net N mineralisation from the residues using a model of mineralisation and leaching has provided evidence of an immobilisation phase for soil mineral N, during the \ufb01rst steps of residues decomposition. Labelling the high-N residues with 15N has moreover enabled us to demonstrate the low availability of the organic N from this residue, 20.8% of the organic N being mineralised in the course of 18 months of experimentation. Eventually, only the highest-N content residue resulted in a mineral N surplus in the soil, equivalent to 9 kg N ha\u22121, by comparison with the control soil. Finally, this study has provided good evidence of the complementarity between the two experimental methods. This study assesses the transferability of models for wild bee abundance in a mass\uffe2\uff80\uff90flowering crop across space (from one region to another) and across time (from one year to another). The models used existing data on bumblebee and solitary bee abundance in winter oilseed rape fields, together with high\uffe2\uff80\uff90resolution land\uffe2\uff80\uff90use crop\uffe2\uff80\uff90cover and semi\uffe2\uff80\uff90natural habitats data, from studies conducted in five different regions located in four countries (Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and the UK), in three different years (2011, 2012, 2013). We developed a hierarchical model combining all studies and evaluated the transferability using cross\uffe2\uff80\uff90validation. We found that both the landscape\uffe2\uff80\uff90scale cover of mass\uffe2\uff80\uff90flowering crops and permanent semi\uffe2\uff80\uff90natural habitats, including grasslands and forests, are important drivers of wild bee abundance in all regions. However, while the negative effect of increasing mass\uffe2\uff80\uff90flowering crops on the density of the pollinators is consistent between studies, the direction of the effect of semi\uffe2\uff80\uff90natural habitat is variable between studies. The transferability of these statistical models is limited, especially across regions, but also across time. Its effects on ammonia (NH3) volatilization were not clear, especially on farmland scale with crop rotations. In this study, on\uffe2\uff80\uff90farm experiments at the Jiaxing (JX) and Yuhang (YH) sites in Taihu Lake Basin, China were conducted to evaluate the effect of DMPP application on mineral nitrogen (N) (NH4\uffe2\uff80\uff93N and NO3\uffe2\uff80\uff93N) leaching and NH3 volatilization losses in a rice\uffe2\uff80\uff93rapeseed cropping system. Treatments included urea alone (UA), urea + 1% DMPP (UD), and no fertilizer (CK). The results show that DMPP reduced NO3\uffe2\uff80\uff93N leaching fluxes by 44.9 to 59.9% and increased NH4\uffe2\uff80\uff93N leaching fluxes by 13.0 to 33.3% at two sites during rice and rape seasons compared with urea alone. Reductions in mineral\uffe2\uff80\uff90N leaching fluxes by DMPP in two seasons at the JX and YH sites were 9.5 and 14.3 kg N ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921, respectively, compared with UA treatment. The application of DMPP had no significant effects on NH3 volatilization loss fluxes at either site. The rice and rapeseed yields were 5.3 to 7.4% higher in UD plots than in UA plots at two sites. The sediment dredged from Begej Canal (Serbia) had high levels of Cr, Cd, Cu, and Pb and was used in pot experiments to cultivate energy crop rapeseed (Brassica napus), which is known for its tolerance to heavy metals. The highest accumulation and translocation of Cu, Cd, and Pb were observed in the treatment with AN at a dose of 150 mg N/kg (AN150), in which shoot biomass was also the highest. The application of OA and MA increased heavy metal uptake but resulted in the lowest biomass production. AMF come from soil or root samples from a two growing-season mesocosm experiment mimicking a crop rotation, with a first phase growing AM or non-AM and/or rhizobial or non rhizobial precrops followed with an AM crop. The AMF community structure was analyzed by amplicon sequencing of the D1-D2 region of the fungal LSU (28S) rRNA gene using the primers LR2rev (5'-GAAAAGAACTTTGAAAA-3') and LR3 (5'-CCGTGTTTCAAGACG-3'). The taxonomy and sequence for each sequence variant is included. The sequences were generated using the primers LR2rev (5'-GAAAAGAACTTTGAAAA-3') and LR3 (5'-CCGTGTTTCAAGACG-3'). The results revealed that the mycorrhizal precrop symbiotic group (AM or not AM), but not the rhizobial one (N2-fixer or not N2-fixer), affected the richness and composition of AM fungi in the soil. The effect on composition, but not on richness, persisted in the following crop, demonstrating a legacy effect of precrop functional group. However, this effect was weaker than that of contemporary factors such as nutrient addition. AMF community composition correlated to decreasing crop yield after AM precrops. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that differences in AMF communities pertained at deep phylogenetic levels. These findings suggest negative plant-soil feedbacks within the AM symbiosis in agro-ecosystems typical of western Europe, driven by the consistent selection of deep clades of AM fungi. While its impact on soil C cycling has been widely recognized, there are few information about its impact on soil N cycling and N fertilizer dynamics. Here, we studied three factors potentially influencing N cycling and N fertilizer dynamics in cropping systems, namely: 1.) soil type, 2.) erosion-induced topsoil dilution and 3.) N fertilizer form in a full-factorial pot experiment using canola plants. We studied three erosion affected soil types (Luvisol, eroded Luvisol, calcaric Regosol) and performed topsoil dilution in all three soils by admixing 20% of the respective subsoil into its topsoil. N fertilizer dynamics was investigated using either mineral (calcium ammonium nitrate) and organic (biogas digestate) fertilizer, labeled with 15N. The fertilizer 15N recovery and the distribution of the fertilizer N in different soil fractions was quantified after plant maturity. Fertilizer N dynamics and utilization were influenced by all three factors investigated. 15N recovery in the plant-soil system was higher and fertilizer N utilization was lower in the treatments with diluted topsoil than in the non-diluted controls. Similarly, plants of the organic fertilizer N treatments took up significantly less fertilizer N in comparison to mineral fertilizer treatments. Both, topsoil dilution and organic fertilizer application promoted 15N recovery and N accumulation in the soil fractions, with strong differences between soil types. Our study reveals a noteworthy insight: topsoil dilution due to soil erosion has a negligible impact on N cycling and dynamics in the plant-soil system. The crucial factors influencing these processes are found to be the choice of fertilizer form and the specific soil type. Recognizing these aspects is essential for a precise and comprehensive assessment of the environmental continuum, emphasizing the novelty of our findings.
