However, the potential spread of opportunistic pathogens and fecal contaminants like Enterococci within the subsoil could pose serious health hazards. Additional sources (e.g., leaky sewer systems, livestock farming) aggravate this situation. This study contributes to an understanding of pathogen spread in the environment, using a combined modelling and experimental approach. The impact of quartz sediment and certain wastewater characteristics on the dissemination of Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 is investigated. The transport processes of advection-dispersion and straining were studied by injecting conservative saline tracer and fluorescent microspheres through sediment packed columns, and evaluating resulting breakthrough curves using models. Similarly, simultaneously occurring reactive processes of microbial attachment, decay, respiration and growth were studied by injecting Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 suspended in water with or without dissolved oxygen (DO) and nutrients through sediment, and evaluating resulting inlet and outlet concentration curves. The processes of straining, microbial decay and growth, were important when DO was absent. Irreversible attachment was important when DO was present. We present and discuss a new dataset of gridded emissions covering the historical period (1850\uffe2\uff80\uff932000) in decadal increments at a horizontal resolution of 0.5\uffc2\uffb0 in latitude and longitude. The primary purpose of this inventory is to provide consistent gridded emissions of reactive gases and aerosols for use in chemistry model simulations needed by climate models for the Climate Model Intercomparison Program #5 (CMIP5) in support of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Our best estimate for the year 2000 inventory represents a combination of existing regional and global inventories to capture the best information available at this point; 40 regions and 12 sectors are used to combine the various sources. The historical reconstruction of each emitted compound, for each region and sector, is then forced to agree with our 2000 estimate, ensuring continuity between past and 2000 emissions. Simulations from two chemistry-climate models is used to test the ability of the emission dataset described here to capture long-term changes in atmospheric ozone, carbon monoxide and aerosol distributions. The simulated long-term change in the Northern mid-latitudes surface and mid-troposphere ozone is not quite as rapid as observed. However, stations outside this latitude band show much better agreement in both present-day and long-term trend. The model simulations indicate that the concentration of carbon monoxide is underestimated at the Mace Head station; however, the long-term trend over the limited observational period seems to be reasonably well captured. The simulated sulfate and black carbon deposition over Greenland is in very good agreement with the ice-core observations spanning the simulation period. The increase in air temperatures causes permafrost (i.e., perennially frozen ground) to thaw and release previously frozen organic carbon (OC) to the contemporary carbon cycle. Permafrost stores large amounts of organic carbon (~1300 \u00b1 200 Pg), which equals up to half of the belowground OC globally. Re-mineralization of the released permafrost OC can add greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) to the atmosphere enhancing climate warming. Gradual permafrost thaw happens when the active layer (i.e., the topmost layer of permafrost that thaws during summer months) deepens due to climate warming releasing largely dissolved organic carbon (DOC). On the contrary, in permafrost regions with high ground ice-content, permafrost thaw happens abruptly (i.e., thermokarst) as landscapes subside or collapse due to melting of ice. Abrupt permafrost thaw releases dominantly particulate organic carbon (POC). While degradation of DOC has been extensively studied in Arctic fluvial systems, degradation of POC is still poorly characterized. In this study, we investigate POC composition and degradation in two different areas: i) in the thaw streams draining abrupt permafrost thaw features, retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS), on the Canadian Peel Plateau, and ii) in the Kolyma River, which is one of the major Arctic rivers draining to the Arctic Ocean. We also study carbon dynamics and water chemistry parameters in lower order streams within the Kolyma watershed in two hydrologically distinct seasons: spring freshet and summer. We use macro(molecular) methods, pyrolysis \u2013 gas chromatography mass spectrometry and lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids), to analyse POC composition and degradation status. For further compositional analysis, we use carbon isotopes (\u03b413C, \u039414C). Additionally, we employ spatial data analysis and statistical modelling to characterize the watersheds and POC sources. Our results indicate that POC composition is seasonally dependent, and it defines biodegradability of POC. On the Peel Plateau, POC consists largely of aromatic moieties and includes petrogenic carbon that are not easily degradable. By contrast, Kolyma River POC degrades relatively fast during summer, when it is mostly of autochthonous sources. However, freshet POC, dominated by allochthonous POC, is not readily degradable. During freshet, DOC is susceptible to adsorption to particles and/or flocculation, potentially attenuating its climate impact. The lower order streams within the Kolyma River watershed react fast to increase in air temperatures during spring freshet with increased surface water temperatures and depletion in \u03b413C-POC, suggesting early onset of primary production. Changes in water temperature and \u03b413C-POC were not as pronounced in the Kolyma River. These results suggest that lower order streams may start primary production and POC degradation earlier in the season than the larger ones and thus, start emitting greenhouse gases earlier. The degraded POC is mostly autochthonous, and more studies are needed to investigate whether degradation of autochthonous POC may stimulate degradation of allochthonous or permafrost POC. Estimating the production of these weed resources in the landscape is however not trivial as large-scale surveys of weed communities are usually conducted once in the season with a timing that may not coincide with the flowering and fruiting stages of all weed species. More, intraspecific variation in the mortality and phenology of individual weed species may arise from differences in the quality of the growing environment of each plant. In this study, we monitored the phenology of 30 common weed species in the field core and the field edge of 64 commercial fields grown with 6 crop types. Our hypothesis was that the production of resources by an individual plant would be modulated by its within-field location and by the crop type where it grows. We quantified floral (proportion, starting date and duration of flowering, dry biomass at flowering as a proxy for the amount of flowers) and seed resource production (proportion and starting date of fruiting). For most species, flowering and fruiting success were higher in field edges than in field cores and were lower in cereal crops than in other crops. Weeds flowered and fruited earlier and the flowering period was longer in field edges, except those of cereal crops. Dry biomass at flowering varied with field location either way, depending on the weed species, but tended to be lower in cereal crops than in other crops. This important intraspecific phenological variability in the production of seed and/or flower or resources should be considered when evaluating the contribution of weed communities to ecosystem services. To determine the temporal dynamics and physiological significance of root, xylem and leaf ABA and ACC concentrations in response to deficit irrigation (DI) or partial rootzone drying (PRD-F) and re-watering, these variables were measured in plants exposed to similar whole pot soil water contents. Both DI and PRD-F plants received only a fraction of the irrigation supplied to well-watered (WW) plants, either to all (DI) or part (PRD-F) of the rootzone of plants grown in split-pots. Both DI and PRD-F induced partial stomatal closure, increased root ABA and ACC accumulation consistent with local soil water content, but did not affect xylem or leaf concentrations of these compounds compared to WW plants. Two hours after re-watering all (DI-RW) or part of the rootzone (PRD-A) to the same soil water content, stomatal conductance returned to WW values or further decreased respectively. Re-watering the whole rootzone had no effect on xylem and leaf ABA and ACC concentrations, while re-watering the dry side of the pot in PRD plants had no effect on xylem and leaf ABA concentrations but increased xylem and leaf ACC concentrations and leaf ethylene evolution. Leaf water potential was similar between all irrigation treatments, with stomatal conductance declining as xylem ABA concentrations and leaf ACC concentrations increased. Prior to re-watering PRD plants, accounting for the spatial differences in soil water uptake best explained variation in xylem ACC concentration suggesting root-to-shoot ACC signalling, but this model did not account for variation in xylem ACC concentration after re-watering the dry side of PRD plants. With climate change, fire frequencies may increase, resulting in a larger fraction of the boreal landscape present in early-successional stages. Since most fertilization studies have focused on mature boreal forests, the response of burned boreal ecosystems to increased nutrient availability is unclear. Therefore, we used a nitrogen (N) fertilization experiment to test how C cycling in a recently-burned boreal ecosystem would respond to increased N availability. We hypothesized that fertilization would increase rates of decomposition, soil respiration, and the activity of extracellular enzymes involved in C cycling, thereby reducing soil C stocks. In line with our hypothesis, litter mass loss increased significantly and activities of cellulose- and chitin-degrading enzymes increased by 45\u201361% with N addition. We also observed a significant decline in C concentrations in the organic soil horizon from 19.5 \u00b1 0.7% to 13.5 \u00b1 0.6%, and there was a trend toward lower total soil C stocks in the fertilized plots. Contrary to our hypothesis, mean soil respiration over three growing seasons declined by 31% from 78.3 \u00b1 6.5 mg CO2\u2013C m\u22122 h\u22121 to 54.4 \u00b1 4.1 mg CO2\u2013C m\u22122 h\u22121. These changes occurred despite a 2.5-fold increase in aboveground net primary productivity with N, and were accompanied by significant shifts in the structure of the fungal community, which was dominated by Ascomycota. Our results show that the C cycle in early-successional boreal ecosystems is highly responsive to N addition. Fertilization results in an initial loss of soil C followed by depletion of soil C substrates and development of a distinct and active fungal community. Total microbial biomass declines and respiration rates do not keep pace with plant inputs. Treatments of citrus fruits with Wickerhamomyces anomalus BS91 have been previously reported as effective measures to reduce the incidence of green mold caused by Penicillium digitatum. On the opposite, the knowledge of the antifungal activity of cultivated cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L. var. altilis DC.) leaf extract, vegetable widespread in some Mediterranean areas, is still very limited. In this study, experimental trials were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness in vitro of leaf aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic extracts of C. cardunculus against seven fungal pathogens responsible for considerable food losses in the postharvest stage. In addition, biocontrol yeast W. anomalus BS91 and the three C. cardunculus extracts were tested in vivo both as a single treatment and in mixture, against Penicillium digitatum on 'Tarocco' oranges and 'Femminello' lemons. The combination of W. anomalus BS91 and leaf ethanolic extract reduced with the highest efficacy the incidence and severity of green mold on orange and lemon fruits with respect to the control, and was more effective than treatment with antagonistic yeast or leaf extracts applied alone. Incidence and severity of citrus decay were more consistently reduced when mixtures were applied 24\u00a0h before the inoculation of the pathogen, thus suggesting the relevance of preventive treatments. The mixtures of antagonistic W. anomalus BS91 and ethanolic leaf extract were more effective in controlling green mold decay on oranges than on lemons. These results indicate that biocontrol agents and leaf extracts, used in appropriate combination, can provide a stronger protection than when used singularly. It provides an overview of the adsorption capacity in the effective root zone of the soils in Brandenburg. The map is based on the legend units of the soil map (B\u00dcK300) with corresponding assignment of parameterized soil forms. These represent one soil form society per legend unit. The single soil forms were assigned with parameters, including the corresponding values for cation exchange capacity (CEC), which were determined by field and laboratory investigations. Identical horizon-substrate combinations were summarized and the corresponding parameters were statistically derived. The sequence of horizon-substrate combinations in the soil forms with their CEC values formed the basis for the calculation of the sorption capacity in the effective root zone (see Hennings 2000, method 2.3). The content of the soil map is compliant to the INSPIRE data specification for the annex theme Soil (D2.8.III.3_v3.0). Im Land Brandenburg werden die KBK mit einem regelbasierten Ansatz weitgehend automatisiert softwaretechnisch abgeleitet. Das Verfahren implementiert die bislang analog durchgef\u00fchrten Arbeitsschritte und bildet als \u201eExpertensystem\u201c das Verst\u00e4ndnis \u00fcber die Genese und die Verbreitung der B\u00f6den in Brandenburg weitgehend ab.     Derzeit wird ein robustes Verfahren zum Abgleich laufender Erhebungen mit den \u201ePrognosen\u201c der Konzeptkarten und darauf fu\u00dfend deren systematische \u00dcberpr\u00fcfung und Bewertung erarbeitet. Zuk\u00fcnftig sollen in diesem Verfahren erkannte Defizite systematisch in einem modifizierten Ableitungsregelwerk ber\u00fccksichtigt und die Konzeptbodenkarten fortlaufend aktualisiert werden. Der WCS beinhaltet die folgenden Coverages:      - SO.SoilTextureClasses:bft,     - SO.SoilGenesis:gft,     - SO.SoilPedogenesis:pft.     ---      The compliant INSPIRE-WCS is a download service that delivers data in the INSPIRE target schema Soil (derived from the original data series: Concept pedological maps in the State of Brandenburg). It provides an overview of the soil texture classes and soil genesis in the State of Brandenburg and is currently the highest-resolution pedological map of the LBGR in raster format with a resolution of 10 x 10 meters. The maps are based on data from German Soil taxonomy classification, geology and various pedological spatial data.     The evaluations provide the technical basis for the planning and implementation of soil surveys as well as for the synthesis and derivation of soil function and risk assessments. The quality of the underlying Concept pedological maps (KBK) therefore has a major influence on the quality of the derived products. In the State of Brandenburg, the KBK is derived using a largely automated software-based approach. The procedure implements the work steps that have been carried out analogously to date and, as an 'expert system', largely reflects the understanding of the genesis and distribution of soils in Brandenburg.     A robust procedure for comparing current surveys with the 'forecasts' of the KBK and, based on this, their systematic review and evaluation is currently being developed. In the future, deficits identified in this procedure will be systematically taken into account in a modified derivation set of rules and the KBK will be continuously updated. It provides an overview of the first use-independent soil geological map that is available for Brandenburg (B\u00dcK300). The map provides an overview of essential soils and, with its evaluations, is the basis for specific tasks such as soil protection or spatial planning at state level. The legend is structured according to substrate characteristics and consists of 99 units in which the main soil groups (Leitbodenformengesellschaften) are shown.
