One potential and understudied consequence of this deforestation and conversion to agriculture is the mobilization and loss of organic matter from soils to rivers as dissolved organic matter. Here, we quantify and characterize dissolved organic matter sampled from 19 catchments of varying deforestation extent near Lake Kivu over a two-week period during the wet season. Dissolved organic carbon from deforested, agriculturally-dominated catchments was older (14C age: ~1.5kyr) and more biolabile than from pristine forest catchments. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry revealed that this aged organic matter from deforested catchments was energy-rich and chemodiverse, with higher proportions of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing formulae. Given the molecular composition and biolability, we suggest that organic matter from deforested landscapes is preferentially respired upon disturbance, resulting in elevated in-stream concentrations of carbon dioxide. We estimate that while deforestation reduces the overall flux of dissolved organic carbon by ~56%, it does not significantly change the yield of biolabile dissolved organic carbon. Ultimately, the exposure of deeper soil horizons through deforestation and agricultural expansion releases old, previously stable, and biolabile soil organic carbon into the modern carbon cycle via the aquatic pathway.", "keywords": ["2. Here, we used a combination of historical (1958) aerial photography and contemporary remote sensing data to map long-term changes in the extent and structure of the tropical forest surrounding Yangambi (DR Congo) in the central Congo Basin. Our study leveraged structure-from-motion and a convolutional neural network-based LULC classifier, using synthetic landscape-based image augmentation to map historical forest cover across a large orthomosaic (~93,431 ha) geo-referenced to ~4.7 \uffc2\uffb1 4.3 m at submeter resolution. A comparison with contemporary LULC data showed a shift from previously highly regular industrial deforestation of large areas to discrete smallholder farming clearing, increasing landscape fragmentation and providing opportunties for substantial forest regrowth. We estimated aboveground carbon gains through reforestation to range from 811 to 1592 Gg C, partially offsetting historical deforestation (2416 Gg C), in our study area. Efforts to quantify long-term canopy texture changes and their link to aboveground carbon had limited to no success. In this study, the influence of Cerrado land development (pasture andEucalyptusplantations) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) stocks were quantified in southern Brazil. Two contrasted silvicultural practices were also compared: 60\uffe2\uff80\uff83years of short\uffe2\uff80\uff90rotation silviculture (EUCSR) versus 60\uffe2\uff80\uff83years of continuous growth (EUCHF). C and N soil concentrations and bulk densities were measured and modelled for each vegetation type, and SOC and SON stocks were calculated down to a depth of 1\uffe2\uff80\uff83m by a continuous function.</p><p>Changes in SOC and SON stocks mainly occurred in the forest floor (no litter in pasture and up to 0.87\uffe2\uff80\uff83kg C\uffe2\uff80\uff83m\uffe2\uff88\uff922and 0.01\uffe2\uff80\uff83kg N\uffe2\uff80\uff83m\uffe2\uff88\uff922in EUCSR) and upper soil horizons. C and N stocks and their confidence intervals were greatly influenced by the methodology used to compute these layers. C/N ratio and13C analysis showed that down to a depth of 30\uffe2\uff80\uff83cm, the Cerrado organic matter was replaced by organic matter from newly introduced vegetation by as much as 75\uffe2\uff80\uff93100% for pasture and about 50% for EUCHF, poorer in N forEucalyptusstands (C/N larger than 18 forEucalyptusstands). Most long-lived and persistent  monodominant tree species form ectomycorrhizal fungi symbioses, allowing  them to obtain nutrients directly from soil organic matter. This might  promote monodominance by reducing nutrient availability to co-occurring  species, the majority of which form associations with arbuscular  mycorrhizal fungi. 2. Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forest is the most  widespread monodominant forest in tropical Africa. Its distribution  appears determined in part by moisture availability, but its monodominance  is not thought to be driven by its fungal partner or soil fertility. 3.  Here we compare soil fertility of twenty G. dewevrei stands to mixed  forest from three sites across an 8,400 km2 region of the Central African  Republic and the Republic of Congo. In contrast to previous studies, we  find monodominant G. dewevrei stands associated with infertile soils, as  base cations (calcium, magnesium, total exchangeable bases) and  extractable manganese are extremely low, and significantly lower in soils  under G. dewevrei forest compared to mixed forest. Further, and consistent  with ectomycorrhizal forests globally, soil carbon to nitrogen and carbon  to phosphorus ratios are significantly higher in G. dewevrei stands than  in mixed forest stands, providing evidence in support of direct  acquisition of nitrogen and phosphorus from soil organic matter by  ectomycorrhizal fungi. 4. Gilbertiodendron dewevrei recruits from the  seedling bank, with its large seedlings surviving in high densities for  over a decade. We tested whether light plasticity could facilitate  monodominance by growing seedlings of G. dewevrei under controlled light  conditions. We found that its seedlings grow well under a wide range of  irradiance levels and conclude that this plasticity affords a competitive  advantage. 5. Synthesis: We reframe the discussion of factors contributing  to monodominance of G. dewevrei into one of resource acquisition and use  efficiency. In particular, G. dewevrei is associated with moist and  infertile soils and competes well under a variety of light conditions. Each SOTER unit may consist of up to 6 soil components; each of these has been characterized by a representative profile. The main soil units mapped for the region have been characterized using 167 real profiles, selected by soil experts as being regionally representative for these units. The associated soil analytical data have been derived from soil survey reports. \n\nGaps in the measured soil data have been filled using a scheme of using a step-wise procedure that uses taxotransfer rules. These rules were developed using some 5672 soil profiles, held in the ISRIC-WISE database, having similar FAO soil unit names as those reported in the primary SOTERCAF database. \n\nParameter estimates are presented by soil unit for fixed depth intervals of 0.2 m to 1 m depth for: organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratio, pH(H2O), CECsoil, CECclay, base saturation, effective CEC, aluminium saturation, CaCO3 content, gypsum content, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), electrical conductivity of saturated paste (ECe), bulk density, content of sand, silt and clay, content of coarse fragments (less than 2 mm), and available water capacity (-33 kPa to -1.5 MPa). These attributes have been identified as being useful for agro-ecological zoning, land evaluation, crop growth simulation, modelling of soil carbon stocks and change, and analyses of global environmental change. \n\nThe current parameter estimates should be seen as best estimates based on the current selection of soil profiles and data clustering procedure.
