Greenspaces are important for sustaining healthy urban environments and their human populations. Yet their capacity to support multiple ecosystem services simultaneously (multiservices) compared with nearby natural ecosystems remains virtually unknown. We conducted a global field survey in 56 urban areas to investigate the influence of urban greenspaces on 23 soil and plant attributes and compared them with nearby natural environments. We show that, in general, urban greenspaces and nearby natural areas support similar levels of soil multiservices, with only six of 23 attributes (available phosphorus, water holding capacity, water respiration, plant cover, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and arachnid richness) significantly greater in greenspaces, and one (available ammonium) greater in natural areas. Further analyses showed that, although natural areas and urban greenspaces delivered a similar number of services at low (>25% threshold) and moderate (>50%) levels of functioning, natural systems supported significantly more functions at high (>75%) levels of functioning. Management practices (mowing) played an important role in explaining urban ecosystem services, but there were no effects of fertilisation or irrigation. Some services declined with increasing site size, for both greenspaces and natural areas. Our work highlights the fact that urban greenspaces are more similar to natural environments than previously reported and underscores the importance of managing urban greenspaces not only for their social and recreational values, but for supporting multiple ecosystem services on which soils and human well-being depends.
Pollinators play a crucial role in ecosystems globally, ensuring the seed production of most flowering plants. They are threatened by global changes and knowledge of their distribution at the national and continental levels is needed to implement efficient conservation actions, but this knowledge is still fragmented and/or difficult to access.
As a step forward, we provide an updated list of around 3000 European bee and hoverfly species, reflecting their current distributional status at the national level (in the form of present, absent, regionally extinct, possibly extinct or non\uffe2\uff80\uff90native). This work was attainable by incorporating both published and unpublished data, as well as knowledge from a large set of taxonomists and ecologists in both groups.
After providing the first National species lists for bees and hoverflies for many countries, we examine the current distributional patterns of these species and designate the countries with highest levels of species richness. We also show that many species are recorded in a single European country, highlighting the importance of articulating European and national conservation strategies.
Finally, we discuss how the data provided here can be combined with future trait and Red List data to implement research that will further advance pollinator conservation.
The European Union has a long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term objective to achieve healthy soils by 2050. The European Commission has proposed a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on Soil Monitoring and Resilience (Soil Monitoring Law, SML), the first stage of which is to focus on setting up a soil monitoring framework and assessing soils throughout the EU. Situated in NW Europe, the UK has substantial experience in soil monitoring over the last half century which may usefully contribute to this wider EU effort. A set of overarching principles have and continue to guide design of national soil monitoring and may prove helpful as other European countries embark on similar monitoring programmes. Therefore, we present the principles of design from five decades of national soil monitoring. The monitoring discussed is based on a stratified\uffe2\uff80\uff90random design, has matured in support of policy questions, and operates over space and time scales relevant to the SML. The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) Countryside Surveys (CS) of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,\uffc2\uffa0Welsh Government, Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring and Modelling Programme (ERAMMP) and the England Ecosystem Survey (EES) monitoring programme are national programmes currently operating in the UK. Some important lessons learnt include: adopting a question\uffe2\uff80\uff90based approach; having a clear robust statistical design for the purpose; selecting indicators that address policy and underlying scientific questions; and selecting indicators that can detect change and use robust and well\uffe2\uff80\uff90tested methodologies across a wide range of soil and land use types, remaining valid over long time scales, supporting thinking long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term. Technical lessons learned include the proven cost effectiveness of a stratified\uffe2\uff80\uff90random design including replication, while adopting a common stratification layer of stable environmental attributes aids comparability between monitoring programmes. Common protocols are vital for future intercomparisons, but a full ecosystem approach that includes co\uffe2\uff80\uff90located soil and vegetation samples for interpreting a co\uffe2\uff80\uff90evolving system has proved hugely advantageous. UK monitoring programmes offer a range of experience that may prove valuable to future soil monitoring design to address the major societal challenges of our time, such as maintaining food production and addressing climate change and biodiversity loss.Research and practice during the last 20 years has shown that urban agriculture can contribute to minimising the effects of climate change by, at the same time, improving quality of life in urban areas. In order to do so most effectively, land use and spatial planning are crucial so as to obtain and maintain a supportive green infrastructure and to secure citizens' healthy living conditions. As people today trend more towards living in green and sustainable city centres that can offer fresh and locally produced food, cities become again places for growing food. The scope of urban agriculture thereby is to establish food production sites within the city's sphere; for example, through building-integrated agriculture including concepts such as aquaponics, indoor agriculture, vertical farming, rooftop production, edible walls, as well as through urban farms, edible landscapes, school gardens and community gardens. Embedded in changing urban food systems, the contribution of urban agriculture to creating sustainable and climate-friendly cities is pivotal as it has the capacity to integrate other resource streams such as water, waste and energy. This region is characterized by its rolling hills landscape, standing at an elevation ranging from 150 to 600 meters (Hohes Gras 614.8 m above sea level), which significantly influences the local climate and soil conditions.\nThe terrain is predominantly formed by loess and clay, with soil types primarily consisting of Luvisols and ###, which are typically fertile but require careful management to prevent compression and ensure sustainability. The soils have a high silt content and a low to moderate clay content, with organic matter levels in the topsoil (0-25 cm) generally around 1.5-3% indicating a good potential for agricultural productivity. Altough it is partly relatively dry in the region.
\nAccording to the K\u00f6ppen\u2013Geiger Climate Classification, the climate of the North Hessian Hill Country. is classified as Cfb, i.e., warm temperate and fully humid, with warm summers, with an average annual precipitation of approximately 600-800 mm and an average annual temperature of around 9.3\u00b0C (reference period 1991-2020). Recent decades have seen a slight increase in temperature reflecting broader patterns of climate change that can affect farming practices and ecosystem resilience in the area.
\nThe focus of research in Neu-Eichenberg and Dom\u00e4ne Frankenhausen includes the development and testing of sustainable agricultural practices tailored to the conditions of the North Hessian Hill Country. This involves the integration of agroforestry systems, the optimization of crop rotations to enhance soil health and biodiversity, and the implementation of organic farming techniques to reduce chemical inputs.
\nSpecific long-term experiments conducted in this focus area include studies on the impact of diversified cropping systems on soil fertility and crop yield stability, as well as the efficacy of various conservation tillage practices in preserving soil moisture and preventing erosion.
\nThe two research sites in the area manage in total over 336 hectares of arable land, with Soilscores ranging from 38-87 supporting a wide range of field trials and observational studies aimed at improving agricultural sustainability and resilience in the face of changing climate conditions. These efforts are crucial for developing adaptive strategies that can ensure food security and environmental protection in the North Hessian Hill Country and beyond.
