In this study, a numerical procedure to determine RRWD thresholds was developed through coupling AquaCrop software with genetic-simplex algorithms. Using a two-year field lysimetric experiment for winter wheat conducted in the North China Plain (NCP), AquaCrop adequately simulated canopy cover, final aboveground biomass, grain yield, seasonal evapotranspiration, and soil water storage, with the normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) smaller than 15 % and determination coefficient (R2) larger than 0.84. The global optimum range of RRWD thresholds was preliminarily determined using the genetic algorithm, and subsequently final RRWD thresholds were optimized by fine tuning using the simplex algorithm. The RRWD threshold combinations (composed of the RRWD thresholds to trigger different sequential irrigation events) for varying number of irrigation events (i.e.1\u20134) were optimized based on 39 years of historical meteorological data, and the effects of climate change on the optimal crop yield (Ya, opt), water productivity (WPopt), and the combinations of optimized RRWD threshold (RRWDopt) were investigated. The results indicated that both Ya, opt and WPopt generally increased with time showing a tendency of gradually elevated annual CO2 concentration and seasonal average effective temperature. Irrespective of the number of irrigation events during the winter wheat growing season, the differences of RRWDopt for different combinations of irrigation sequence and event in the same kind of hydrological year were relatively small, with a coefficient of variation consistently less than 23 % and a mean of 8 %. When combinations of mean RRWDopt were applied into AquaCrop to trigger irrigation for winter wheat in various hydrological years, the simulated yield (Ya, sim) and water productivity (WPsim) under 1\u20134 irrigation events were found to be comparable to their respective optimums (Ya, opt and WPopt), with all the values of Ya, sim (WPsim) falling in the range of 92 %Ya, opt (90 %WPopt). Previous studies have quantified crop yield losses from water erosion using a range of methods, applied mostly to single plots or fields, and cannot be systematically compared. This study assesses the worldwide impact of water erosion on maize and wheat production using a global gridded modeling approach for the first time. The EPIC crop model is used to simulate the global impact of water erosion on maize and wheat yields, from 1980 to 2010, for a range of field management strategies. Maize and wheat yields were reduced by a median of 3% annually in grid cells affected by water erosion, which represent approximately half of global maize and wheat cultivation areas. Water erosion reduces the annual global production of maize and wheat by 8.9 million tonnes and 5.6 million tonnes, with a value of $3.3bn globally. Nitrogen fertilizer necessary to reduce losses is valued at $0.9bn. As cropland most affected by water erosion is outside major maize and wheat production regions, the production losses account for less than 1% of the annual global production by volume. Countries with heavy rainfall, hilly agricultural regions and low fertilizer use are most vulnerable to water erosion. These characteristics are most common in South and Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and South and Central America. Notable uncertainties remain around large-scale water erosion estimates that will need to be addressed by better integration of models and observations. It is well accepted that there is a relation between CC and      NDVI through linear or quadratic models, however a straight-forward empirical approach, to derive CC from NDVI observations, is still lacking. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of the NDVI-CC relationships with data      collected from 19 different studies (N=1397). Generic models are proposed here for 13 different agricultural crops, and the associated degree of uncertainty, together with the magnitude of error were quantified for each model (RMSE around 6-18% of CC).We observed that correlations are adequate for the majority of crops as R2 values were above 75% for most cases, and coefficient estimates were significant for most of the linear and quadratic models. Extrapolation to conditions different than those found in the studies may require local validation, as obtained regressions are affected by non-sampling errors or sources of systematic error that need further investigation. In a case study with wheat, we tested the use of NDVI as a proxy to estimate CC and to calibrate the AquaCrop model. Simulation outcomes were validated with field data collected from three growing seasons and confirmed that the NDVI-CC relationship was useful for modelling research. We highlight that the overall applicability of these relationships to modelling is promising as the RMSE are in line with acceptable levels published in several sensitivity analyses. PRECOS's approach integrates data pertaining to the fields of water and soil resources, agronomy, urbanization, land use and infrastructure etc. It is complemented by a socio-economic and regulatory analysis of the territory illustrating its constraints and stakes. A modular architecture articulates modeling software and spatial and temporal representations tools. It produces indicators in three core domains: soil degradation, water and soil resources and agricultural production. As a territory representative of numerous situations of the Mediterranean Basin (urban pressures, overconsumption of spaces, degradation of the milieus), a demonstration in the Crau's area (Southeast of France) has allowed to validate a prototype of the approach and to test its feasibility in a real life situation. Results on the Crau area have shown that, since the beginning of the 16th century, irrigated grasslands are the cornerstones of the anthropic-system, illustrating how successfully men's multi-secular efforts have maintained a balance between environment and local development. But today the ecosystem services are jeopardized firstly by urban sprawl and secondly by climate change. Pre-diagnosis in regions of Emilia-Romagna (Italy) and Valencia (Spain) show that local end-users and policy-makers are interested by this approach. The current intensive use of agricultural land is affecting the land quality and contributes to climate change. Feeding the world's growing population under changing climatic conditions demands a global transition to more sustainable agricultural systems. This requires efficient models and data to monitor land cultivation practices at the field to global scale. This study outlines a spatially distributed version of the field-scale crop model AquaCrop version 6.1 to simulate agricultural biomass production and soil moisture variability over Europe at a relatively fine resolution of 30\u2009arcsec (\u223c1\u2009km). A highly efficient parallel processing system is implemented to run the model regionally with global meteorological input data from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2), soil textural information from the Harmonized World Soil Database version 1.2 (HWSDv1.2), and generic crop information. The setup with a generic crop is chosen as a baseline for a future satellite-based data assimilation system. The relative temporal variability in daily crop biomass production is evaluated with the Copernicus Global Land Service dry matter productivity (CGLS-DMP) data. Surface soil moisture is compared against NASA Soil Moisture Active\u2013Passive surface soil moisture (SMAP-SSM) retrievals, the Copernicus Global Land Service surface soil moisture (CGLS-SSM) product derived from Sentinel-1, and in situ data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). Over central Europe, the regional AquaCrop model is able to capture the temporal variability in both biomass production and soil moisture, with a spatial mean temporal correlation of 0.8 (CGLS-DMP), 0.74 (SMAP-SSM), and 0.52 (CGLS-SSM). The higher performance when evaluating with SMAP-SSM compared to Sentinel-1 CGLS-SSM is largely due to the lower quality of CGLS-SSM satellite retrievals under growing vegetation. The regional model further captures the short-term and inter-annual variability, with a mean anomaly correlation of 0.46 for daily biomass and mean anomaly correlations of 0.65 (SMAP-SSM) and 0.50 (CGLS-SSM) for soil moisture. It is shown that soil textural characteristics and irrigated areas influence the model performance. An application for the estimation of the Yield Gap is also provided. The model was firstly calibrated based on three fields data during the 2002\uffe2\uff80\uff932003 and 2003\uffe2\uff80\uff932004 growing seasons, by using the WOFOST implementation in the Python Crop simulation Environment (PCSE) to optimize the different parameters that provide the minimum difference between the measured and simulated LAI, TAGP, TWSO, SM and ETa. Then, the model validation was performed based on the data from five other wheat fields. The results obtained showed a good performance of the WOFOST model for the estimation of LAI during both growing seasons on all validation fields. The average R2, RSME and NRMSE were 91.4%, 0.57 m2/m2, and 41.4%, respectively. The simulated ETa dynamics also showed a good agreement with the observations by eddy covariance systems. Values of 60% and 72% for R2, 0.8 mm and 0.7 mm for RMSE, 54% and 31% for NRMSE are found for the two validation fields, respectively. The model\uffe2\uff80\uff99s ability to predict soil moisture content was also found to be satisfactory; the two validation fields gave R2 values equal to 48% and 49%, RMSE values equal to 0.03 cm3/cm3 and 0.05 cm3/cm3, NRMSE values equal to 11% and 19%. The calibrated model had a medium performance with respect to the simulation of TWSO (R2 = 42%, RSME = 512 kg/ha, NRMSE = 19%) and TAGP (R2 = 34% and RSME = 936 kg/ha, NRMSE = 16%). After accurate calibration and validation of the WOFOST model, it was used for analyzing the gap yield since this model is able to estimate the potential yield. The WOFOST model allowed a good simulation of the potential yield (7.75 t/ha) which is close to the optimum value of 6.270 t/ha in the region. Yield gap analysis reveals a difference of 5.35 t/ha on average between the observed yields and the potential yields calculated by WOFOST. Such difference is ascribable to many factors such as the crop cycle management, agricultural practices such as water and fertilization supply levels, etc. The various simulations (irrigation scenarios) showed that early sowing is more adequate than late sowing in saving water and obtaining adequate grain yield. Based on various simulations, it has been shown that the early sowing (mid to late December) is more adequate than late sowing with a total amount of water supply of about 430 mm and 322 kg (140 kg of N, 80 kg of P and 102 kg of K) of fertilization to achieve the potential yield. The most representative example is the SoilGrids 1km released by ISRIC in 2014. In addition recent AfSIS project put a lot of efforts to develop more accurate soil database in Africa at high spatial resolution. Sin embargo, si bien se han logrado avances significativos en los aspectos de la ingenier\u00eda de la variaci\u00f3n espacial, como el aumento de la resoluci\u00f3n espacial de los sistemas de datos y la automatizaci\u00f3n, se ha avanzado mucho menos en relaci\u00f3n a la simulaci\u00f3n de las respuestas de los cultivos a las variaciones espaciales de la humedad y los flujos h\u00eddricos. La mayor\u00eda de los estudios sobre las brechas de rendimiento de secano ignoran la variabilidad dentro de la parcela. Sin embargo, el uso de modelos de simulaci\u00f3n de cultivos como medida de apoyo a los sistemas de gesti\u00f3n espacialmente variable, requiere que los enfoques de modelaci\u00f3n espacial del agua sean capaces de representar y simular con precisi\u00f3n la variaci\u00f3n dentro del campo de los factores relacionados con el agua disponible y la respuesta de los cultivos. Esta tesis doctoral representa una nueva contribuci\u00f3n a la agronom\u00eda de los sistemas agr\u00edcolas de secano, con \u00e9nfasis en el papel que juegan los flujos de agua en zonas de topograf\u00eda ondulada en la determinaci\u00f3n de las variaciones espaciales del rendimiento del trigo. La tesis se ha desarrollado en cap\u00edtulos que se complementan siguiendo un enfoque integrador. La presente tesis doctoral revis\u00f3 algunos de los modelos hidrol\u00f3gicos y de cultivo m\u00e1s ampliamente adoptados y explor\u00f3 nuevas oportunidades para simular variaciones espaciales del agua a nivel de campo mediante la incorporaci\u00f3n del flujo lateral de escorrent\u00eda superficial y sub-superficial en las zonas de menor elevaci\u00f3n del campo. Desde este punto de vista, se evaluaron las variaciones espaciales de las brechas de rendimiento en trigo de secano, en C\u00f3rdoba, Espa\u00f1a, que son causadas por flujos laterales de los puntos altos a los bajos. Desde una perspectiva agron\u00f3mica, las entradas laterales del agua contribuyen a las variaciones de rendimiento en los sistemas de producci\u00f3n de trigo de secano como el que se ha estudiado en el \u00e1mbito de esta tesis. La contribuci\u00f3n neta de estos flujos a las variaciones espaciales de los rendimientos potenciales de secano se mostr\u00f3 relevante pero altamente irregular entre diferentes a\u00f1os. A pesar de la variabilidad interanual, t\u00edpica de las condiciones mediterr\u00e1neas, la existencia de dichos flujos hizo que los rendimientos de trigo simulados variaran un +16% desde las \u00e1reas m\u00e1s elevadas de un campo hacia abajo. El rendimiento medio observado oscil\u00f3 entre 1.3 y 5.4 Mg de rendimiento de grano (GY) ha\u22121. Las respuestas de rendimiento neto al flujo lateral, cuenca abajo, fueron en promedio 383 kg de rendimiento de grano (GY) ha\u22121, y la productividad marginal de agua de LIF alcanz\u00f3 24.6 (\u00b113.2) kg GY ha\u22121 mm\u22121 en a\u00f1os de m\u00e1xima capacidad de respuesta. Dichos a\u00f1os de m\u00e1xima capacidad de respuesta se asociaron con bajas precipitaciones durante las etapas vegetativas del cultivo en combinaci\u00f3n con flujos laterales en las etapas posteriores a la floraci\u00f3n. En condiciones de campo, estas diferencias solo fueron visibles en uno de los dos a\u00f1os experimentales. Las implicaciones econ\u00f3micas asociadas con m\u00faltiples escenarios de tasa de aplicaci\u00f3n variable de nitr\u00f3geno se exploraron a trav\u00e9s de un caso de estudio y se propusieron varias recomendaciones. Tanto el tama\u00f1o de la finca (el \u00e1rea sembrada anual) como la estructura topogr\u00e1fica afectaron la din\u00e1mica de los rendimientos de la inversi\u00f3n. Bajo las condiciones actuales de pol\u00edtica agr\u00edcola, y de precios, la adopci\u00f3n de la tasa de aplicaci\u00f3n variable tendr\u00eda una ventaja econ\u00f3mica en fincas similares a la del caso de estudio con un \u00e1rea sembrada anual superior a 567 ha a\u00f1o\u22121. Sin embargo, las tendencias actuales en los precios de la energ\u00eda, los costes de transporte y los impactos tanto en los precios de los cereales como en los costes de los fertilizantes mejoran la viabilidad de la adopci\u00f3n de esta tecnolog\u00eda para una poblaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia de tipos de fincas. La rentabilidad de la adopci\u00f3n de aplicaci\u00f3n variable de nitr\u00f3geno mejora bajo dichos escenarios y, en ausencia de apoyos adicionales, el \u00e1rea m\u00ednima para la adopci\u00f3n de aplicaci\u00f3n variable disminuye hasta un rango de 68-177 ha a\u00f1o\u22121 de \u00e1rea de siembra. The current intensive use of agricultural land is affecting the land quality and contributes to climate change. Feeding the world's growing population under changing climatic conditions demands a global transition to more sustainable agricultural systems. This requires efficient models and data to monitor land cultivation practices at the field to global scale. This study outlines a spatially distributed version of the field-scale crop model AquaCrop version 6.1 to simulate agricultural biomass production and soil moisture variability over Europe at a relatively fine resolution of 30\u2009arcsec (\u223c1\u2009km). A highly efficient parallel processing system is implemented to run the model regionally with global meteorological input data from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2), soil textural information from the Harmonized World Soil Database version 1.2 (HWSDv1.2), and generic crop information. The setup with a generic crop is chosen as a baseline for a future satellite-based data assimilation system. The relative temporal variability in daily crop biomass production is evaluated with the Copernicus Global Land Service dry matter productivity (CGLS-DMP) data. Surface soil moisture is compared against NASA Soil Moisture Active\u2013Passive surface soil moisture (SMAP-SSM) retrievals, the Copernicus Global Land Service surface soil moisture (CGLS-SSM) product derived from Sentinel-1, and in situ data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). Over central Europe, the regional AquaCrop model is able to capture the temporal variability in both biomass production and soil moisture, with a spatial mean temporal correlation of 0.8 (CGLS-DMP), 0.74 (SMAP-SSM), and 0.52 (CGLS-SSM). The higher performance when evaluating with SMAP-SSM compared to Sentinel-1 CGLS-SSM is largely due to the lower quality of CGLS-SSM satellite retrievals under growing vegetation. The regional model further captures the short-term and inter-annual variability, with a mean anomaly correlation of 0.46 for daily biomass and mean anomaly correlations of 0.65 (SMAP-SSM) and 0.50 (CGLS-SSM) for soil moisture. It is shown that soil textural characteristics and irrigated areas influence the model performance. Previous studies have quantified crop yield losses from water erosion using a range of methods, applied mostly to single plots or fields, and cannot be systematically compared. This study assesses the worldwide impact of water erosion on maize and wheat production using a global gridded modeling approach for the first time. The EPIC crop model is used to simulate the global impact of water erosion on maize and wheat yields, from 1980 to 2010, for a range of field management strategies. Maize and wheat yields were reduced by a median of 3% annually in grid cells affected by water erosion, which represent approximately half of global maize and wheat cultivation areas. Water erosion reduces the annual global production of maize and wheat by 8.9 million tonnes and 5.6 million tonnes, with a value of $3.3bn globally. Nitrogen fertilizer necessary to reduce losses is valued at $0.9bn. As cropland most affected by water erosion is outside major maize and wheat production regions, the production losses account for less than 1% of the annual global production by volume. Countries with heavy rainfall, hilly agricultural regions and low fertilizer use are most vulnerable to water erosion. These characteristics are most common in South and Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and South and Central America. Notable uncertainties remain around large-scale water erosion estimates that will need to be addressed by better integration of models and observations. This is particularly evident in the small-scale heterogeneous soil properties and changing terrain profiles (knolls, depressions). Climatically, Dedelow is a continentally influenced location with 500 mm annual precipitation and an annual mean temperature of 8.7 \u00b0C, which is characterized by frequent pre-summer drought.</p>\n<p>The dominant soil type is para-brown earth. Dedelow is one of the better sites in the Uckermark with a soil index of 35 - 50. The composition of the topsoil (10% clay - 30% silt - 60% sand) corresponds to a sandy loam, the supply of basic nutrients is in the B/C range. </p>\n<p>The Dedelow trial station has the personnel and field trial technology to implement different cultivation systems in different plot sizes. It borders the Naturpark Maerkische Schweiz (https://nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz, https://www.naturschutzfonds.de/natur-erleben/landschaften/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz). </p>\n<p>It is a typical site of the glacial moraine landscape of the North German Lowland approx. 62 m above sea level. The site of the experimental station is from flat to easily incline. Typical soil types are Albic and Ortic Luvisols, Cambic and Luvic Arenosols. The soils are far from groundwater with mean clay content of around 5-10% in the top soil (0-25 cm). Carbon content, natural pH and the base-saturation are low. The topsoil (0-25 cm) contains around 1% humus. The soil is free of lime. It tends to acidification and requires regular liming. </p>\n<p>The weather is characterised by a continental-influenced humid inland climate with an average of 548 mm precipitation and 8.9\u00b0C annual temperature (reference period 1981-2010). Compared to the period 1951-1980, temperature and rainfall have increased by 0.7\u00b0C and 19 mm, respectively. An increase of periods of pronounced pre-summer drought is the consequence of the changing climate. </p>\n<h1>Main research tasks that are addressed in this focus area: </h1>\n\n<p>The current focus of the trials is research on climate-adapted and diversity-promoting agricultural systems through the implementation of new crops in crop rotations, conservation tillage and reduced use of pesticides, especially herbicides. The research station Muencheberg is in charge of two long-term field trials, the \"M\u00fcncheberger N\u00e4hrstoffsteigerungsversuch V140/00\u201d (https://doi.org/10.20387/bonares-8fhj-r52g) and the field model trial \u201cKrumenaufbau\u201d V210/02.\nIt manages 42 ha arable land. It borders the Naturpark M\u00e4rkische Schweiz (https://nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz, https://www.naturschutzfonds.de/natur-erleben/landschaften/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz).</p>\n\n<p>It is a typical site of the glacial moraine landscape of the North German Lowland approx. 62 m above sea level. The site of the experimental station is from flat to easily incline. Typical soil types are Albic and Ortic Luvisols, Cambic and Luvic Arenosols. The soils are far from groundwater with mean clay content of around 5-10% in the top soil (0-25 cm). Carbon content, natural pH and the base-saturation are low. The topsoil (0-25 cm) contains around 1% humus. The soil is free of lime. It tends to acidification and requires regular liming.</p>\n\n<p>The weather is characterised by a continental-influenced humid inland climate with an average of 548 mm precipitation and 8.9\u00b0C annual temperature (reference period 1981-2010). Compared to the period 1951-1980, temperature and rainfall have increased by 0.7\u00b0C and 19 mm, respectively. An increase of periods of pronounced pre-summer drought is the consequence of the changing climate.</p>\n\n<h1>Main research tasks that are addressed in this focus area:</h1>\n\n<p>The current focus of the trials is research on climate-adapted and diversity-promoting agricultural systems through the implementation of new crops in crop rotations, conservation tillage and reduced use of pesticides, especially herbicides. <br/>\nThe research station M\u00fcncheberg is in charge of two long-term field trials, the \"M\u00fcncheberger N\u00e4hrstoffsteigerungsversuch V140/00\u201d (https://doi.org/10.20387/bonares-8fhj-r52g) and the field model trial \u201cKrumenaufbau\u201d V210/02.<br/>\nIt manages 42 ha arable land. The dataset covers the period 1980-2010 for observations (for a baseline period of 1981-2010 and the year 1980 for crop model simulations with sowing dates in the autumn) and the periods 2040-2069 and 2070-2099 for 5 GCMs x 2 forcing scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) and 2 GCMs with RCP2.6. The Joint Research Centre\u2019s (JRC) Agri4Cast gridded dataset was used for the baseline. The scenarios have been calculated using an enhanced delta change method that applies changes in aspects of temperature and precipitation variability in addition to changes in mean climate.\n\nMethods: The structure of the single tables refers to the gridcode of the model, for example the gridcode 35120 fits the location 35_120. This means the gridcode column is 120, the row 35. The explanation can be found in the properties of the kml file or the associated grid file. The dataset was generated by applying a \u201cdelta change factor\u201d based on GCM outputs for RCP scenarios corresponding to the periods: 2040 until 2069 and from 2070 until 2099. As the \u201cdelta change factor\u201d for these periods was applied to baseline observations for the period of 1.1.1980 to 31.12.2010, the dates for the respective scenario periods are still 1.1.1980 to 31.12.2010, due to the fact they are scenarios (ie, what would climate be relative to baseline climate). Pragmatically this avoids issues with different alignment of leap years between baseline and scenario periods. This is standard practice in climate data. Sin embargo, si bien se han logrado avances significativos en los aspectos de la ingenier\u00eda de la variaci\u00f3n espacial, como el aumento de la resoluci\u00f3n espacial de los sistemas de datos y la automatizaci\u00f3n, se ha avanzado mucho menos en relaci\u00f3n a la simulaci\u00f3n de las respuestas de los cultivos a las variaciones espaciales de la humedad y los flujos h\u00eddricos. La mayor\u00eda de los estudios sobre las brechas de rendimiento de secano ignoran la variabilidad dentro de la parcela. Sin embargo, el uso de modelos de simulaci\u00f3n de cultivos como medida de apoyo a los sistemas de gesti\u00f3n espacialmente variable, requiere que los enfoques de modelaci\u00f3n espacial del agua sean capaces de representar y simular con precisi\u00f3n la variaci\u00f3n dentro del campo de los factores relacionados con el agua disponible y la respuesta de los cultivos. Esta tesis doctoral representa una nueva contribuci\u00f3n a la agronom\u00eda de los sistemas agr\u00edcolas de secano, con \u00e9nfasis en el papel que juegan los flujos de agua en zonas de topograf\u00eda ondulada en la determinaci\u00f3n de las variaciones espaciales del rendimiento del trigo. La tesis se ha desarrollado en cap\u00edtulos que se complementan siguiendo un enfoque integrador. La presente tesis doctoral revis\u00f3 algunos de los modelos hidrol\u00f3gicos y de cultivo m\u00e1s ampliamente adoptados y explor\u00f3 nuevas oportunidades para simular variaciones espaciales del agua a nivel de campo mediante la incorporaci\u00f3n del flujo lateral de escorrent\u00eda superficial y sub-superficial en las zonas de menor elevaci\u00f3n del campo. Desde este punto de vista, se evaluaron las variaciones espaciales de las brechas de rendimiento en trigo de secano, en C\u00f3rdoba, Espa\u00f1a, que son causadas por flujos laterales de los puntos altos a los bajos. Desde una perspectiva agron\u00f3mica, las entradas laterales del agua contribuyen a las variaciones de rendimiento en los sistemas de producci\u00f3n de trigo de secano como el que se ha estudiado en el \u00e1mbito de esta tesis. La contribuci\u00f3n neta de estos flujos a las variaciones espaciales de los rendimientos potenciales de secano se mostr\u00f3 relevante pero altamente irregular entre diferentes a\u00f1os. A pesar de la variabilidad interanual, t\u00edpica de las condiciones mediterr\u00e1neas, la existencia de dichos flujos hizo que los rendimientos de trigo simulados variaran un +16% desde las \u00e1reas m\u00e1s elevadas de un campo hacia abajo. El rendimiento medio observado oscil\u00f3 entre 1.3 y 5.4 Mg de rendimiento de grano (GY) ha\u22121. Las respuestas de rendimiento neto al flujo lateral, cuenca abajo, fueron en promedio 383 kg de rendimiento de grano (GY) ha\u22121, y la productividad marginal de agua de LIF alcanz\u00f3 24.6 (\u00b113.2) kg GY ha\u22121 mm\u22121 en a\u00f1os de m\u00e1xima capacidad de respuesta. Dichos a\u00f1os de m\u00e1xima capacidad de respuesta se asociaron con bajas precipitaciones durante las etapas vegetativas del cultivo en combinaci\u00f3n con flujos laterales en las etapas posteriores a la floraci\u00f3n. En condiciones de campo, estas diferencias solo fueron visibles en uno de los dos a\u00f1os experimentales. Las implicaciones econ\u00f3micas asociadas con m\u00faltiples escenarios de tasa de aplicaci\u00f3n variable de nitr\u00f3geno se exploraron a trav\u00e9s de un caso de estudio y se propusieron varias recomendaciones. Tanto el tama\u00f1o de la finca (el \u00e1rea sembrada anual) como la estructura topogr\u00e1fica afectaron la din\u00e1mica de los rendimientos de la inversi\u00f3n. Bajo las condiciones actuales de pol\u00edtica agr\u00edcola, y de precios, la adopci\u00f3n de la tasa de aplicaci\u00f3n variable tendr\u00eda una ventaja econ\u00f3mica en fincas similares a la del caso de estudio con un \u00e1rea sembrada anual superior a 567 ha a\u00f1o\u22121. Sin embargo, las tendencias actuales en los precios de la energ\u00eda, los costes de transporte y los impactos tanto en los precios de los cereales como en los costes de los fertilizantes mejoran la viabilidad de la adopci\u00f3n de esta tecnolog\u00eda para una poblaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia de tipos de fincas. La rentabilidad de la adopci\u00f3n de aplicaci\u00f3n variable de nitr\u00f3geno mejora bajo dichos escenarios y, en ausencia de apoyos adicionales, el \u00e1rea m\u00ednima para la adopci\u00f3n de aplicaci\u00f3n variable disminuye hasta un rango de 68-177 ha a\u00f1o\u22121 de \u00e1rea de siembra.
