Therefore, it reduces the amount of energy converted by the semiconductor solar cells. This work focuses on the effect of soiling on the spectral performance of multi-junction (MJ) cells, widely used in concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) applications. Novel indexes, useful to quantify the spectral impact of soiling are introduced, and their meanings are discussed. The results of a one-year experimental investigation conducted in Spain are presented and are used to discuss how soiling impacts each of the subcells of a MJ cell, as well as the cell current-matching. Results show that soiling affects the current balance among the junctions, i.e. the transmittance losses have found to be around 4% higher in the top than in the middle subcell. The spectral nature of soiling has demonstrated to increase the annual spectral losses of around 2%. Ideal conditions for the mitigation of soiling are also discussed and found to be in blue-rich environments, where the higher light intensity at the shorter wavelengths can limit the impact of soiling on the overall production of the CPV system.", "keywords": ["concentrator photovoltaics; multi-junction solar cells; outdoor performance; soiling transmittance; spectral effects", "Multi-junction solar cells", "Spectral effects", "0211 other engineering and technologies", "Systems and Control (eess.SY)", "02 engineering and technology", "Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control", "7. The proposed sensor is experimentally validated in a controlled environment and the measurement results match the computational predictions well. The sensor is robust with respect to noise and signal-recording duration due to fast phase measurements and shows high sensitivity to gas concentration due to reliance on the second, nearly-flat, dispersion curve. In principle, this allows to correct for displacements of the Tool Centre Point and enables high precision manufacturing. However, the computational cost of FEM models and restriction to generic algorithms in commercial tools like ANSYS prevents their operational use since simulations have to run faster than real-time. For the case where heat diffusion is slow compared to machine movement, we introduce a tailored implicit-explicit multi-rate time stepping method of higher order based on spectral deferred corrections. Using the open-source FEM library DUNE, we show that fully coupled simulations of the temperature field are possible in real-time for a machine consisting of a stock sliding up and down on rails attached to a stand.", "keywords": ["FOS: Computer and information sciences", "Machine tool", "Numerical Analysis (math.NA)", "Systems and Control (eess.SY)", "Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control", "Real-time simulation", "Computational Engineering", " Finance", " and Science (cs.CE)", "Numerical time-stepping", "Spectral deferred corrections", "FOS: Mathematics", "FOS: Electrical engineering", " electronic engineering", " information engineering", "Thermal error", "Mathematics - Numerical Analysis", "Computer Science - Computational Engineering", " Finance", " and Science"]}, "links": [{"href": "https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/125537/1/paper.pdf"}, {"href": "https://doi.org/2735859580"}, {"rel": "related", "href": "https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Computational%20Mechanics", "name": "related record", "description": "related record", "type": "application/json"}, {"rel": "self", "type": "application/geo+json", "title": "2735859580", "name": "item", "description": "2735859580", "href": "https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/2735859580"}, {"rel": "collection", "type": "application/json", "title": "Collection", "name": "collection", "description": "Collection", "href": "https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main"}], "time": {"date": "2018-01-10T00:00:00Z"}}, {"id": "5517e4d4790bb696b91f9a33fc7c069d", "type": "Feature", "geometry": null, "properties": {"updated": "2026-09-22T16:26:23Z", "type": "Report", "title": "Collaborative target-tracking control using multiple autonomous fixed-wing UAVs with constant speeds", "description": "Open AccessThis paper considers a collaborative tracking control problem using a group of fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with constant and non-identical speeds. The dynamics of fixed-wing UAVs are modelled by unicycle-type equations with nonholonomic constraints, assuming that UAVs fly at constant altitudes in the nominal operation mode. The controller is designed such that all fixed-wing UAVs as a group can collaboratively track a desired target's position and velocity. We first present conditions on the relative speeds of tracking UAVs and the target to ensure that the tracking objective can be achieved when UAVs are subject to constant speed constraints. We construct a reference velocity that includes both the target's velocity and position as feedback, which is to be tracked by the group centroid. In this way, all vehicles' headings are controlled such that the group centroid follows a reference trajectory that successfully tracks the target's trajectory. A spacing controller is further devised to ensure that all vehicles stay close to the group centroid trajectory. Trade-offs in the controller design and performance limitations of the target tracking control due to the constant-speed constraint are also discussed in detail. Experimental results with three fixed-wing UAVs tracking a target rotorcraft are provided.", "keywords": ["FOS: Computer and information sciences", "Computer Science - Robotics", "0209 industrial biotechnology", "Optimization and Control (math.OC)", "FOS: Electrical engineering", " electronic engineering", " information engineering", "FOS: Mathematics", "Computer Science - Multiagent Systems", "02 engineering and technology", "Systems and Control (eess.SY)", "Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control", "Mathematics - Optimization and Control", "Robotics (cs.RO)", "Multiagent Systems (cs.MA)"]}, "links": [{"href": "https://doi.org/http://arxiv.org/abs/1810.00182"}, {"rel": "self", "type": "application/geo+json", "title": "5517e4d4790bb696b91f9a33fc7c069d", "name": "item", "description": "5517e4d4790bb696b91f9a33fc7c069d", "href": "https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/5517e4d4790bb696b91f9a33fc7c069d"}, {"rel": "collection", "type": "application/json", "title": "Collection", "name": "collection", "description": "Collection", "href": "https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main"}], "time": {"date": "2018-01-01T00:00:00Z"}}, {"id": "91199b7c79d64dce831302cf0b0eee46", "type": "Feature", "geometry": null, "properties": {"updated": "2026-09-22T16:26:23Z", "type": "Journal Article", "created": "2023-10-18", "title": "Asymmetric spoof-fluid-spoof acoustic waveguide and its application as a CO2 sensor", "description": "Open AccessWe study pressure acoustic propagation in asymmetric spoof-fluid-spoof acoustic waveguides and its potential application in acoustic gas sensors. First, a stable and efficient analytical method is established for fast calculation of the dispersion curves based on spectral expansion and enforcement of continuity between segments at suitable collocation points. The analysis is validated by a commercial finite element software. The geometric design of the waveguide is then optimized for the emergence of a nearly-flat dispersion curve associated with vertical geometric asymmetry. The waveguide is fabricated using 3D printing technology and the measurement results corroborate the numerical simulations. Based on the nearly-flat dispersion curve supported by this waveguide, a CO$_2$ sensor is proposed allowing to relate the phase difference measured between two points in the waveguide to the composition of the gas in the waveguide. The proposed sensor is experimentally validated in a controlled environment and the measurement results match the computational predictions well.
