Although mixedwoods have been shown to have greater resource use efficiency relative to pure stands, considerable uncertainty remains with respect to the underlying ecological processes. We explored species interactions in Scots pine/European beech mixedwoods with the process￢ﾀﾐbased model FORECAST Climate. The model was calibrated for two contrasting forests in the southwestern Pyrenees (northern Spain): a wet Mediterranean site at 625ￂﾠm.a.s.l. and a subalpine site at 1335ￂﾠm.a.s.l. Predicted mixedwood yield was higher than that for beech stands but lower than pine stands. When simulating climate change, mixedwood yield was reduced at the Mediterranean site (￢ﾈﾒ33%) but increased at the subalpine site (+11%). Interaction effects were enhanced as stands developed. Complementarity dominated the Mediterranean stand but neutral or net competition dominated the subalpine stand, which had higher stand density and water availability. Reduced water demand and consumption, increased canopy interception, and improved water￢ﾀﾐuse efficiency in mixtures compared to beech stands, suggest a release of beech intraspecific competition. Beech also facilitated pine growth through better litter quality, nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixation, and above￢ﾀﾐ and belowground stratification, leading to higher foliar nitrogen content and deeper canopies in pines. In conclusion, mixtures may improve water availability and use efficiency for beech and light interception for pine, the main limiting factors for each species, respectively. Encouraging pine￢ﾀﾓbeech mixtures could be an effective adaptation to climate change in drought￢ﾀﾐprone sites in the Mediterranean region.

0106 biological sciences", "2. Phenological observations of leaves and wood formation were performed weekly from summer 2017 to summer 2018 for pedunculate oak, European beech and silver birch in Belgium. The variability of bud-burst was correlated to previous' year autumn phenology (i.e. the onset of leaf senescence and the cessation of wood formation) and tree size but with important differences among species. In fact, variability of bud-burst was primarily related to onset of leaf senescence, cessation of wood formation and tree height for oak, beech and birch, respectively. The inter-individual variability of onset of leaf senescence was not related to the tree characteristics considered and was much larger than the inter-individual variability in bud-burst. Multi-species multivariate models could explain up to 66% of the bud-burst variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate direct and indirect effects of climate on litter decomposition along an altitudinal gradient in a temperate Alpine region. Foliar litter of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Black pine (Pinus nigra) was incubated in litterbags during two years in the Hochschwab massif of the Northern Limestone Alps of Austria. Eight incubation sites were selected following an altitudinal/climatic transect from 1900 to 900 m asl. The average remaining mass after two years of decomposition amounted to 54% (beech) and 50% (pine). Net release of N, P, Na, Al, Fe and Mn was higher in pine than in beech litter due to high immobilization (retention) rates of beech litter. However, pine litter retained more Ca than beech litter. Altitude retarded decay (mass loss and associated C release) in beech litter during the first year only but had a longer lasting effect on decaying pine litter. Altitude comprises a suite of highly auto-correlated characteristics (climate, vegetation, litter, soil chemistry, soil microbiology, snow cover) that influence litter decomposition. Hence, decay and nutrient release of incubated litter is difficult to predict by altitude, except during the early stage of decomposition, which seemed to be controlled by climate. Reciprocal litter transplant along the elevation gradient yielded even relatively higher decay of pine litter on beech forest sites after a two-year adaptation period of the microbial community.
Pinus nigra", "0106 biological sciences", "Decomposition", "Fagus sylvatica", "Soil Science", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. To alleviate substrate overloading in HS-AD, the effluent mass was relatively reduced compared to the influent mass, extending the mass retention time. To this aim, the reactor mass was daily evaluated, permitting to assess the reactor content removal by biogas production. During mono-digestion of OFMSW, the NH3 inhibition and the rapid TS removal prevented to maintain HS-AD conditions (i.e. TS ≥ 10%), without exacerbating the risk of reactor acidification. In contrast, the inclusion of sawdust in OFMSW permitted to operate HS-AD up to 30% TS, before acidification occurred. Therefore, including a lignocellulosic substrate in OFMSW can prevent acidification and stabilize HS-AD at very high TS contents (i.e. 20-30%).
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "substrate overloading", "Substrate overloading", "High-solids anaerobic digestion", "02 engineering and technology", "Solid Waste", "Influent/effluent uncoupling", "01 natural sciences", "7. Large amounts of C are stored in plants and soils, but the mechanisms behind the stabilization of plant￢ﾀﾐ and microbial￢ﾀﾐderived organic matter (OM) in soils are still under debate and it is not clear how N deposition affects soil OM dynamics. Here, we studied the effects of 4ￂﾠyears of elevated (13C￢ﾀﾐdepleted) CO2 and N deposition in forest ecosystems established in open￢ﾀﾐtop chambers on composition and turnover of fatty acids (FAs) in plants and soils. FAs served as biomarkers for plant￢ﾀﾐ and microbial￢ﾀﾐderived OM in soil density fractions. We analyzed above￢ﾀﾐ and belowground plant biomass of beech and spruce trees as well as soil density fractions for the total organic C and FA molecular and isotope (ￎﾴ13C) composition. FAs did not accumulate relative to total organic C in fine mineral fractions, showing that FAs are not effectively stabilized by association with soil minerals. The ￎﾴ13C values of FAs in plant biomass increased under high N deposition. However, the N effect was only apparent under elevated CO2 suggesting a N limitation of the system. In soil fractions, only isotope compositions of short￢ﾀﾐchain FAs (C16+18) were affected. Fractions of ￢ﾀﾘnew￢ﾀﾙ (experimental￢ﾀﾐderived) FAs were calculated using isotope depletion in elevated CO2 plots and decreased from free light to fine mineral fractions. ￢ﾀﾘNew￢ﾀﾙ FAs were higher in short￢ﾀﾐchain compared to long￢ﾀﾐchain FAs (C20￢ﾈﾒ30), indicating a faster turnover of short￢ﾀﾐchain compared to long￢ﾀﾐchain FAs. Increased N deposition did not significantly affect the quantity of ￢ﾀﾘnew￢ﾀﾙ FAs in soil fractions, but showed a tendency of increased amounts of ￢ﾀﾘold￢ﾀﾙ (pre￢ﾀﾐexperimental) C suggesting that decomposition of ￢ﾀﾘold￢ﾀﾙ C is retarded by high N inputs.

UFSP13-8 Global Change and Biodiversity", "2306 Global and Planetary Change", "Chemical Fractionation", "Forests", "2300 General Environmental Science", "Soil", "Fagus", "Environmental Chemistry", "Biomass", "Photosynthesis", "Picea", "General Environmental Science", "2. In forests, roughly half of the soil respiration is autotrophic (mainly root respiration) while the remainder is heterotrophic, originating from decomposition of soil organic matter. Decomposition is an important process for cycling of nutrients in forest ecosystems. Hence, tree species induced changes may have a great impact on atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Since studies on the combined effects of beech–spruce mixtures are very rare, we firstly measured CO2 emission rates in three adjacent stands of pure spruce (Picea abies), mixed spruce–beech and pure beech (Fagus sylvatica) on three base-rich sites (Flysch) and three base-poor sites (Molasse; yielding a total of 18 stands) during two summer periods using the closed chamber method. CO2 emissions were higher on the well-aerated sandy soils on Molasse than on the clayey soils on Flysch, characterized by frequent water logging. Mean CO2 effluxes increased from spruce (41) over the mixed (55) to the beech (59) stands on Molasse, while tree species effects were lower on Flysch (30–35, mixed > beech = spruce; all data in mg CO2–C m−2 h−1). Secondly, we studied decomposition after fourfold litter manipulations at the 6 mixed species stands: the Oi – and Oe horizons were removed and replaced by additions of beech –, spruce – and mixed litter of the adjacent pure stands of known chemical quality and one zero addition (blank) in open rings (20 cm inner diameter), which were covered with meshes to exclude fresh litter fall. Mass loss within two years amounted to 61–68% on Flysch and 36–44% on Molasse, indicating non-additive mixed species effects (mixed litter showed highest mass loss). However, base cation release showed a linear response, increasing from the spruce – over the mixed – to the beech litter. The differences in N release (immobilization) resulted in a characteristic converging trend in C/N ratios for all litter compositions on both bedrocks during decomposition. In the summers 2006 and 2007 we measured CO2 efflux from these manipulated areas (a closed chamber fits exactly over such a ring) as field indicator of the microbial activity. Net fluxes (subtracting the so-called blank values) are considered an indicator of litter induced changes only and increased on both bedrocks from the spruce – over the mixed – to the beech litter. According to these measurements, decomposing litter contributed between 22–32% (Flysch) and 11–28% (Molasse) to total soil respiration, strengthening its role within the global carbon cycle.
DYNAMICS", "0106 biological sciences", "FLUXES", "Fagus sylvatica", "NUTRIENT RELEASE", "BROADLEAF", "Nutrient cycling", "01 natural sciences", "Mixed species effects", "507015 Regionalforschung", "FORESTS", "FAGUS-SYLVATICA", "CO(2) efflux", "SDG 15 – Leben an Land", "SDG 15 - Life on Land", "Picea abies", "Litter decomposition", "NORWAY SPRUCE", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. ectomycorrhizal root-tips shape associated bacterial communities
Abstract
Ectomycorrhizal fungi live in close association with their host plants and form complex interactions with bacterial/archaeal communities in soil. We investigated whether abundant or rare ectomycorrhizal fungi on root-tips of young beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) shape bacterial/archaeal communities. We sequenced 16S rRNA genes and fungal internal transcribed spacer regions of individual root-tips and used ecological networks to detect the tendency of certain assemblies of fungal and bacterial/archaeal taxa to inhabit the same root-tip (i.e. modularity). Individual ectomycorrhizal root-tips hosted distinct fungal communities associated with unique bacterial/archaeal communities. The structure of the fungal-bacterial/archaeal association was determined by both, dominant and rare fungi. Integrating our data in a conceptual framework suggests that the effect of rare fungi on the bacterial/archaeal communities of ectomycorrhizal root-tips contributes to assemblages of bacteria/archaea on root-tips. This highlights the potential impact of complex fine-scale interactions between root-tip associated fungi and other soil microorganisms for the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis.</p
0301 basic medicine", "QH301-705.5", "Fungal ecology; Microbial ecology; Symbiosis", "microbial ecology", "Plant Roots", "Article", "Microbial ecology", "Soil", "03 medical and health sciences", "Mycorrhizae", "RNA", " Ribosomal", " 16S", "Fagus", "Biology (General)", "106026 Ecosystem research", "Fungal ecology", "Symbiosis", "Soil Microbiology", "106022 Mikrobiologie", "0303 health sciences", "Bacteria", "15. It may, therefore, compete with vegetative growth. It is currently unknown whether increased atmospheric CO(2) concentrations will affect the carbon balance (or that of other nutrients) between reproduction and vegetative growth of forest species. In this study, reproduction and vegetative growth of shoots of mature beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees grown at ambient and elevated atmospheric CO(2) concentrations were quantified. It was hypothesized that within a shoot, fruiting has a negative effect on vegetative growth, and that this effect is ameliorated at increased CO(2) concentrations.Reproduction and its competition with leaf and shoot production were examined during two masting events (in 2007 and 2009) in F. sylvatica trees that had been exposed to either ambient or elevated CO(2) concentrations (530 µmol mol(-1)) for eight consecutive years, between 2000 and 2008.The number of leaves per shoot and the length of terminal shoots was smaller or shorter in the two masting years compared with the one non-masting year (2008) investigated, but they were unaffected by elevated CO(2) concentrations. The dry mass of terminal shoots was approx. 2-fold lower in the masting year (2007) than in the non-masting year in trees growing at ambient CO(2) concentrations, but this decline was not observed in trees exposed to elevated CO(2) concentrations. In both the CO(2) treatments, fruiting significantly decreased nitrogen concentration by 25 % in leaves and xylem tissue of 1- to 3-year-old branches in 2009.Our findings indicate that there is competition for resources between reproduction and shoot growth. Elevated CO(2) concentrations reduced this competition, indicating effects on the balance of resource allocation between reproduction and vegetative growth in shoots with rising atmospheric CO(2) concentrations.
0106 biological sciences", "Time Factors", "Nitrogen", "Reproduction", "Carbon Dioxide", "15. Trees were grown on sand and received either no N nutrition (-N treatment) or 4 mM N (+N treatment) for 1 year. The -N and +N pretreated trees were then placed in growth chambers and grown in 350 (ambient) or 700 ppm (elevated) of a 13CO2 atmosphere for 24 weeks. In all treatments, trees were supplied with 4 mM 15N during the experiment. Irrespective of tree N reserves, elevated [CO2] increased cumulative carbon (C) uptake by about 30% at Week 24 compared with that for trees in the ambient treatment. Elevated [CO2] also caused a shift in C allocation to belowground compartments, which was more pronounced in -N trees than in +N trees. In +N trees, belowground allocation of new C at Week 24 was 67% in ambient [CO2] compared with 70% in elevated [CO2]. The corresponding values for -N trees were 70 and 79%. The increase in C allocation in response to elevated [CO2] was most evident as an increase in belowground respiration; however, specific root respiration was unaffected by the CO2 or N treatments. Although elevated [CO2] increased root growth and belowground respiration, it had no effect on N uptake at Week 24. As a result of increased C uptake, N concentrations were decreased in trees in the elevated [CO2] treatment compared with trees in the ambient treatment in both N treatments. Partitioning of new N uptake was unaffected by elevated [CO2] in +N trees. In -N trees, however, N allocation to the stem decreased in response to elevated [CO2] and N allocation to fine roots increased, suggesting a reduction in the formation of N reserves in response to elevated [CO2]. We conclude that the response of beech trees to elevated [CO2] is affected by internal N status and that elevated [CO2] may influence the ability of the trees to form N reserves.
Plant Leaves", "0106 biological sciences", "Nitrogen", "13. Three species with contrasting leaf development dynamics and wood anatomy were studied: European beech, silver birch and pedunculate oak. Detailed phenological observations of xylogenesis and leaf phenology were performed from summer 2017 until spring 2018. Cambium reactivation (CR) occurred before the buds of oak and birch were swollen, whereas these two phenological phases were concurrent for beech. On the other hand, initial earlywood vessels were fully differentiated (FDIEV) after leaf unfolding for all three species. Timing of CR was correlated to average ring-width of the last 10ￂﾠyears (2008￢ﾀﾓ17), tree diameter and, partially, with tree age. In addition, the timing of FDIEV was correlated to tree age and previous year￢ﾀﾙs autumn phenology, i.e., timing of wood growth cessation and onset of leaf senescence. Multivariate models could explain up to 68% of the variability of CR and 55% of the variability of FDIEV. In addition to the ￢ﾀﾘspecies￢ﾀﾙ factor, the variability could be explained by ca 30% by tree characteristics and previous year￢ﾀﾙs autumn phenology for both CR and FDIEV. These findings are important to better identify which factors (other than environment) can be driving the onset of the growing season, and highlight the influence of tree growth characteristics and previous year￢ﾀﾙs phenology on spring wood phenology, wood formation and, potentially, forest production.

580", "0106 biological sciences", "Fagus sylvatica", "cambium", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. The temporal dynamics of these plant-soil interactions are, however, unclear. *Here, we experimentally manipulated the C and N availability in a beech forest through N fertilization or tree girdling and conducted a detailed analysis of the seasonal pattern of microbial community composition and decomposition processes over 2 yr. *We found a strong relationship between microbial community composition and enzyme activities over the seasonal course. Phenoloxidase and peroxidase activities were highest during late summer, whereas cellulase and protease peaked in late autumn. Girdling, and thus loss of mycorrhiza, resulted in an increase in soil organic matter-degrading enzymes and a decrease in cellulase and protease activity. *Temporal changes in enzyme activities suggest a switch of the main substrate for decomposition between summer (soil organic matter) and autumn (plant litter). Our results indicate that ectomycorrhizal fungi are possibly involved in autumn cellulase and protease activity. We used the bomb radiocarbon approach to estimate the time elapsed since fixation of mobilized soluble sugars.

During the leafless period after the frost event, soluble sugar concentrations declined sharply while ￎﾔ14C of NSC increased. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that gap creation and lime application, a routine measure in many European forests to ameliorate soil acidity, lead to accelerated litter decomposition and thus a reduction in the forest floor and soil C and N pools. Four gaps were created in 1989 in a mature European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest on acid soil with a moder humus, and lime (3 t dolomiteￂﾷha–1) was applied to two of these and surrounding areas. Litter and fine-root decomposition was measured in 1992–1993 and 1996–1998 using litterbags. Forest floor (L, F, and H layers) and mineral soil (0–40 cm) C and N pools were determined in 1989 and 1997. Eight years following silvicultural treatments, there was no change in C and N over the entire forest soil profile including forest floor. Reductions in the F and H layers in limed gaps were compensated for by increases in soil C and N in the surface (0–10 cm) mineral soil. Decomposition of F litter was significantly accelerated in limed gaps, leading to the development of a mull–moder, whereas gap creation alone had no effect on mass loss of F material in litterbags. Gap size disturbances in this acid beech forest appear to have minimal influences on soil C and N stocks. However, when combined with liming, changes in the humus form and vertical distribution of soil C and N may occur.

0106 biological sciences", "Decomposition", "soil nutrient", "550", "Nitrogen", "Fagus sylvatica", "forest management", "Forestry", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "910", "15. To have a global understanding of the wood formation, it is necessary to develop new methodologies for xylogenesis measurements, valid across diverse wood structures and applicable to both angiosperms and gymnosperms. In this study, the authors present a new workflow to study xylogenesis using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT), which is generic and offers high potential for automatization. The HXRCT-based approach was benchmarked with the current classical approach (microtomy) on three tree species with contrasted wood anatomy (Pinus nigra, Fagus sylvatica, and Quercus robur). HRXCT proved to estimate the relevant xylogenesis parameters (timing, duration, and growth rates) across species with high accuracy. HRXCT showed to be an efficient avenue to investigate tree xylogenesis for a wide range of wood anatomies, structures, and species. HRXCT also showed its potential to provide quantification of intra-annual dynamics of biomass production through high-resolution 3D mapping of wood biomass within the forming growth ring.

0106 biological sciences", "[SDV.BID.SPT]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Biodiversity/Systematics", "XYLEM", "tree growth", "secondary growth phenology", "Plant Science", "01 natural sciences", "7.
We hypothesized that this can alter the normal cyclic dynamics of C￢ﾀﾐreserves in the wood.

We measured soluble sugar concentrations and radiocarbon signatures (ￎﾔ14C) of soluble nonstructural carbon (NSC) in woody tissues sampled from a Mediterranean beech forest that was completely defoliated by an exceptional late frost in 2016. We used the bomb radiocarbon approach to estimate the time elapsed since fixation of mobilized soluble sugars.

During the leafless period after the frost event, soluble sugar concentrations declined sharply while ￎﾔ14C of NSC increased. This can be explained by the lack of fresh assimilate supply and a mobilization of C from reserve pools. Soluble NSC became increasingly older during the leafless period, with a maximum average age of 5ￂﾠyr from samples collected 27ￂﾠd before canopy recovery. Following leaf re￢ﾀﾐgrowth, soluble sugar concentrations increased and ￎﾔ14C of soluble NSC decreased, indicating the allocation of new assimilates to the stem soluble sugars pool.

These data highlight that beech trees rapidly mobilize reserve C to survive strong source￢ﾀﾓsink imbalances, for example due to late frost, and show that NSC is a key trait for tree resilience under global change.
 </p
580", "0106 biological sciences", "570", "late-frost leaf damage", "Fagus sylvatica", "bomb-radiocarbon (C-14)", "nonstructural carbon", "bomb-radiocarbon (14C)", "15. Data on stem growth and litterfall describe the development of the forest stand.
The experimental approach is similar to that of the ICP Forest level II plots (http://icp-forests.net), but additionally considers the spatial variability in the stem distance gradient for throughfall and soil solution.
This table contains the index of all tables forming this data collection.

Related datasets are listed in the metadata element 'Related Identifier'.
Dataset version 1.0
["above ground tree biomass", "evapotranspiration", "Fagus
