Understanding these impacts is therefore essential for managing ecosystems and sustaining human well￢ﾀﾐbeing. Here, we conducted a global synthesis of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater studies to identify key gaps in our knowledge of climate change impacts on food webs and determine whether the areas currently studied are those most likely to be impacted by climate change. We found research suffers from a strong geographic bias, with only 3.5% of studies occurring in the tropics. Importantly, the distribution of sites sampled under projected climate changes was biased￢ﾀﾔareas with decreases or large increases in precipitation and areas with low magnitudes of temperature change were under￢ﾀﾐrepresented. Our results suggest that understanding of climate change impacts on food webs could be broadened by considering more than two trophic levels, responses in addition to species abundance and biomass, impacts of a wider suite of climatic variables, and tropical ecosystems. Female limnologists have promoted and established the bases of our knowledge about inland waters and fostered the need of protecting the values of those ecosystems. However, on numerous occasions, their contribution to the advancement of limnology has not been duly recognized. Here, we review the presence of women in limnology through the history of the discipline: from the pioneers who contributed to the origins to present day' developments. We aim at visibilizing those scientists and establish them as role models. We also analyze in a simple and illustrative way the current situation of women in limnology, the scientific barriers they must deal with, and their future prospects. Multiple aspects fostering the visibility of a scientist, such as their presence in conferences, awards, or representation in societal or editorial boards show a significant gap, with none of those aspects showing a similar visibility of women and men in limnology. This article raises awareness of the obstacles that women in limnology faced and still face, and encourages to embrace models of leadership, scientific management, and assessment of research performance far from those commonly established.

This article is categorized under:
Science of Water > Methods

Water and Life > Methods
</p
0106 biological sciences", "0301 basic medicine", "bias", "330", "Gender", "574", "01 natural sciences", "[SDU] Sciences of the Universe [physics]", "equity", "03 medical and health sciences", "Bias", "5. P significantly increased macrophyte primary production, which led to the rapid elimination of cyanobacterial mats. The replacement of cyanobacterial mats by macrophytes constrained autotrophic nitrogen (N) fixation, increased the quantity, and changed the quality of organic matter input to the sediments. We predicted that the activity of sediment heterotrophic N fixers will be impacted by these alterations in carbon input. We used the acetylene reduction technique to measure potential (glucose amended) nitrogenase activity (NA) in sediments from controls and treatment plots that have been P enriched for four years and dominated either by Eleocharis cellulosa, or Typha domingensis for two years. NA in P-enriched plots was 2–3 orders of magnitude higher than NA in controls. NA was positively correlated with the soil reactive P, both total organic and microbial carbon, live root biomass, and total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) as an indicator of active microbial biomass. It was negatively correlated with the concentration of ammonium-N. Path analysis revealed that the indirect effect of P on NA through the root biomass was more important than the direct effect of P. NA of the upper sediment layer was consistently higher in Eleocharis than in Typha dominated plots, despite the higher litter input by Typha. We feel that the higher levels of lignin and phenolics occurring in Typha litter, relative to Eleocharis, constrained NA in Typha plots.
0106 biological sciences", "Freshwater & Marine Ecology", "Salinity", "Ecology", "Life Sciences", "Phosphorus", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "Aquatic Science", "15. Due to the extensive use and high resistance to degradative factors, these compounds pose a significant risk of environmental spreading, bioaccumulating also in living organisms. In this context, despite many researches have been performed to demonstrate 'legacy' PFAS harmfulness, only few data are still available about all the emerging fluorinated molecules, industrially introduced to replace the previous ones. For this reason, we proposed the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana as consolidated invertebrate model to assess the effects of four different PFAS (HFPO-DA, PFMoBa, PFOA and PFMOPrA) following freshwater dispersion. Morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular analyses demonstrate that, despite all the compounds basically induce an acute inflammatory and oxidative stress response, a different cellular and molecular response has been observed. Whereas for PFOA and PFMOPrA an increase in the tested concentration leads to a corresponding rise in the immune response, HFPO-DA and PFMoBa trigger an entirely opposite effect. Indeed, the significant recruitment of both granulocytes and macrophage like cells, typically involved in the removal of non-self, is inhibited with increasing concentrations of these compounds. However, agricultural land-use and physical changes made to improve crop productivity and yield have resulted in modified hydrology and displaced natural vegetation. The modification to the hydrology and natural vegetation have affected the biodiversity and many ecosystem functions provided by riparian zones. Here we review the literature to provide state-of-the-art recommendations for riparian zones in agricultural landscapes. We analysed all available publications since 1984 that have quantified services provided by riparian zones and use this information to recommend minimum buffer widths. We also analysed publications that gave buffer width recommendations to sustain different groups of organisms. We found that drainage size matters for nutrient and sediment removal, but also that a 3 m wide buffer zone acts as a basic nutrient filter. However, to maintain a high floral diversity, a 24 m buffer zone is required, while a 144 m buffer is needed to preserve bird diversity. Based on the analysis, we developed the concept of 'Ecologically Functional Riparian Zones' (ERZ) and provide a step-by-step framework that managers can use to balance agricultural needs and environmental protection of waterways from negative impacts. By applying ERZ in already existing agricultural areas, we can better meet small targets and move towards the long-term goal of achieving a more functional land management and better environmental status of waterways.
Riparian zone", "river", "nutrient uptake", "hydrology", "Review", "water quality", "01 natural sciences", "Ecological functional riparian zones", "waterway transport", "freshwater environment", "biodiversity", "agriculture", "2. On the volcanic island of Iceland, wetlands are replenished with Fe-rich surface-, ground- and springwater. Combined with extensive drainage of lowland wetlands, which forms artificial redox gradients, accumulations of bright orange (a)biotically-derived Fe-rich flocs are common features of Icelandic wetlands. These loosely consolidated flocs are easily mobilized, and, considering the proximity of Iceland's lowland wetlands to the coast, are likely to contribute to the suspended sediment load transported to coastal waters. To date, however, little is known regarding (Fe) mineral and elemental composition of the flocs. In this study, flocs from wetlands (n = 16) across Iceland were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques (X-ray absorption and 57Fe Mössbauer) combined with chemical extractions and (electron) microscopy to comprehensively characterize floc mineral, elemental, and structural composition. All flocs were rich in Fe (229–414 mg/g), and floc Fe minerals comprised primarily ferrihydrite and nano-crystalline lepidocrocite, with a single floc sample containing nano-crystalline goethite. Floc mineralogy also included Fe in clay minerals and appreciable poorly-crystalline aluminosilicates, most likely allophane and/or imogolite. Microscopy images revealed that floc (bio)organics largely comprised mineral encrusted microbially-derived components (i.e. sheaths, stalks, and EPS) indicative of common FeOB Leptothrix spp. and Gallionella spp. Trace element contents in the flocs were in the low μg/g range, however nearly all trace elements were extracted with hydroxylamine hydrochloride. This finding suggests that the (a)biotic reductive dissolution of floc Fe minerals, plausibly driven by exposure to the varied geochemical conditions of coastal waters following floc mobilization, could lead to the release of associated trace elements. Thus, the flocs should be considered vectors for transport of Fe, organic carbon, and trace elements from Icelandic wetlands to coastal waters.
Minerals", "Iron", "Iceland", "Freshwater flocs", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. However, successful application of metabarcoding to biodiversity monitoring requires universal primers with high taxonomic coverage that amplify highly variable, short metabarcodes with high taxonomic resolution. Moreover, reliable and extensive reference databases are essential to match the outcome of metabarcoding analyses with available taxonomy and biomonitoring indices. Benthic invertebrates, particularly insects, are key taxa for freshwater bioassessment. Nevertheless, few studies have so far assessed markers for metabarcoding of freshwater macrobenthos. Here we combined in silico and laboratory analyses to test the performance of different markers amplifying regions in the 18S rDNA (Euka02), 16S rDNA (Inse01) and COI (BF1_BR2￢ﾀﾐCOI) genes, and developed an extensive database of benthic macroinvertebrates of France and Europe, with a particular focus on key insect orders (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera). Analyses on 1,514 individuals representing different taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates showed very different amplification success across primer combinations. The Euka02 marker showed the highest universality, while the Inse01 marker showed excellent performance for the amplification of insects. BF1_BR2￢ﾀﾐCOI showed the highest resolution, while the resolution of Euka02 was often limited. By combining our data with GenBank information, we developed a curated database including sequences representing 822 genera. The heterogeneous performance of the different primers highlights the complexity in identifying the best markers, and advocates for the integration of multiple metabarcodes for a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of ecological impacts on freshwater biodiversity.

0106 biological sciences", "570", "amplification rate; biomonitoring; biotic indices; cytochrome c oxidase I; environmental DNA; freshwater biodiversity; macroinvertebrates; primer bias; taxonomic resolution; universality", "500", "Fresh Water", "Biodiversity", "15. Arctic ecosystems are no exception and plastic pollution is high on the Arctic Council's agenda. Water and sediment have been identified as two of the priority compartments for monitoring plastics under the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP). Recommendations for monitoring both compartments are presented in this publication. Alone, such samples can provide information on presence, fate, and potential impacts to ecosystems. Together, the quantification of microplastics in sediment and water from the same region produce a three-dimensional picture of plastics, not only a snapshot of floating or buoyant plastics in the surface water or water column but also a picture of the plastics reaching the shoreline or benthic sediments, in lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Assessment methodologies must be adapted to the ecosystems of interest to generate reliable data. In its current form, published data on plastic pollution in the Arctic is sporadic and collected using a wide spectrum of methods which limits the extent to which data can be compared. Unfortunately, soil C reservoirs in restored wetlands are slow to accumulate even after hydrology and plant communities are reestablished. Oftentimes wetland restoration changes the soil matrix and thus can dramatically alter how soil C is stored and processed. Our research investigated whether soil organic matter (SOM) preservation theories derived from studies in non-wetland soil systems can be extended to wetland soils. We examined C associated with water-stable soil aggregates, minerals, and metal oxides within habitats of one natural and one restored tidal freshwater wetland. This study revealed that a majority of the soil C in the natural site was associated with large macroaggregates (> 2000 μm), and soils from the restored site stored more C in small macroaggregates (> 250 to < 2000 μm). Despite these different associations, the chemical composition of SOM followed similar patterns across each aggregate-size class. Results from the sequential extraction procedure suggest organo-metal oxide complexes do not contribute to C stabilization in these habitats. This research is one of the few studies that have examined C stabilization related to soil structure in wetland soils. Our results suggest soil aggregate formation may be an important mechanism driving C stabilization, and that disruption to macroaggregates may limit C accumulation in restored wetlands. Additional empirical research and long-term field monitoring are needed to confirm linkages between aggregate-C stabilization and accumulation in wetland soils.
tidal freshwater wetlands", "aggregates", "15. The data collected revealed a different sensitivity of the leech immune system following PFAS exposure, requiring to deepen the current knowledge on the potential toxicity of these compounds.
Inflammation", "Fluorocarbons", "PFAS", "Freshwater environment", "Inflammatory response", "610", "Toxicology", "Hirudo medicinalis", "Oxidative Stress", "Leeches", "628", "Oxidative stre", "Animals", "Medicinal leech", "Water Pollutants", " Chemical
https://doi.org/11579/193142
Abstract
Trophic interactions within food webs affect species distributions, coexistence, and provision of ecosystem services but can be strongly impacted by climatic changes.
Due to the complexity of biogeochemical processes and historically compartmentalized disciplines, ecosystem-specific conceptualizations of OM degradation have emerged independently of developments in other ecosystems. Recent discussions regarding the relative importance of molecular composition and ecosystem properties on OM degradation have diverged in opposing directions across subdisciplines, leaving our understanding inconsistent. Ecosystem-dependent theories are problematic since properties unique to an ecosystem may change in response to anthropogenic stressors, including climate change. The next breakthrough in our understanding of OM degradation requires a shift in focus towards developing a unified theory of controls on OM across ecosystems.
0301 basic medicine", "[CHIM.ANAL] Chemical Sciences/Analytical chemistry", "global carbon cycle", "[SDE.MCG]Environmental Sciences/Global Changes", "Climate Change", "Concept Formation", "soil", "Carbon Cycle", "Soil", "03 medical and health sciences", "[CHIM.ANAL]Chemical Sciences/Analytical chemistry", "[SDV.EE]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Ecology", "14.
Delineation (vector), Aug. 2015
Riparian zones represent transitional areas occurring between land and freshwater ecosystems, characterised by distinctive hydrology, soil and biotic conditions and strongly influenced by the stream water. They provide a wide range of riparian functions (e.g. chemical filtration, flood control, bank stabilization, aquatic life and riparian wildlife support, etc.) and ecosystem services.

The Riparian Zones products support the objectives of several European legal acts and policy initiatives, such as the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020, the Habitats and Birds Directives and the Water Framework Directive.

The delineation of Riparian Zones is based on a complex spatial modelling approach, making use of the Riparian Zones’ LC/LU classification, large-scale earth observation data and a range of additional geo-data sources, as well as derived spatially explicit indicators. Inputs are regionally parameterised and weighted according to relative importance in a fuzzy modelling approach. The zones provide a majority of riparian functions with a focus on ecosystem services.

The production of the Riparian Zones products was coordinated by the European Environment Agency in the frame of the EU Copernicus programme.
SHP
WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link
Land cover", "EEA39", "bank (land)", "filtration", "land use", "freshwater ecosystem", "landscape alteration", "riparian zone", "European", "2017 3.6.2", "Biodiversity", "Water", "Land use
["owner
[null

["custodian
[null

["publisher
["Kongens Nytorv 6

["pointOfContact
[null
https://land.copernicus.eu/en/products/riparian-zones/delineation-of-riparian-zones-catchments-regions#Download
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/f0f9610c-8446-45ed-88bd-eaa137bef5ab"},
["2011-01-01T00:00:00Z", "2013-12-31T00:00:00Z"]}},
[[[9.51, 52.33], [9.51, 54.76], [14.24, 54.76], [14.24, 52.33], [9.51, 52.33
Soil
agriculture
arable farming
chemical contamination
cropping systems
farmland
freshwater ecosystem
freshwater invertebrates
grasslands
habitats
indicators
pesticides
ponds
water pollution
AGROVOC Multilingual agricultural thesaurus
opendata
MonVia
Individual
Boden
GEMET - We collected biological data (benthic invertebrate taxa abundances) and chemical data (pesticide residues and nutrient concentrations) as well as data on environmental parameters (e.g., conductivity, pH and habitat type) for 154 samples within the time period of 2015-2021. Benthic invertebrates were sampled with a hand net (mesh size 500 μm) using a habitat-specific, area standardized method. Sampled habitats were: fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), submersed macrophytes, reed, flooded terrestrial vegetation, overhanging terrestrial vegetation, stones, and dead wood. Mixed water samples (5 L) for chemical analysis of nutrients and pesticides were taken by grab sampling from four to six points around the shoreline. The dataset was analysed in order to evaluate effects of agricultural and environmental stressors like habitat diversity, pesticide and nutrient contamination on diversity and structure of benthic invertebrate communities. This table contains the index of all tables forming this data collection.

Related datasets are listed in the metadata element 'Related Identifier'.
Dataset version 1.0
