The objective was getting insights into the uncharted research field of business model innovation for a circular and sustainable bio￢ﾀﾐeconomy within the agrifood sector. Eight European cases valorising agricultural waste and by￢ﾀﾐproducts by closing loops or cascading were studied regarding their innovation drivers and elements, via interviews, on￢ﾀﾐsite visits and secondary data. In this domain, the findings highlight that business model innovations are depending on the (i) macro￢ﾀﾐenvironmental institutional￢ﾀﾐlegal conditions and market trends, (ii) driven by internal economic, environmental and/or social objectives, but especially strongly linked to (iii) other actors often from different sectors seeking synergies and (iv) value co￢ﾀﾐcreation via combined organisational and technological innovations. Business models for a circular bio￢ﾀﾐeconomy thus depend on various action levels and need radical combined organisational and technological innovations for a most efficient usage of agricultural waste and by￢ﾀﾐproducts. However, as the amount of unverified information increases, so too does the challenge in deciding which information to trust. Farmers, when learning about agricultural innovations, have historically relied on in-person advice from traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, such as agricultural advisers, to inform farm management. As more farmers go online for information, it is not clear whether they are now using digital information to corroborate in-person advice from traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, or if they are foregoing ￢ﾀﾘexpert￢ﾀﾙ advice in preference for peer-generated information. To fill this knowledge gap, we sought to understand how farmers in two contrasting European countries (Hungary and the UK) learnt about sustainable soil innovations and who influenced them to innovate. Through interviews with 82 respondents, we found farmers in both countries regularly used online sources to access soil information; some were prompted to change their soil management by farmer social media ￢ﾀﾘinfluencers￢ﾀﾙ. However, online information and interactions were not usually the main factor influencing farmers to change their practices. Farmers placed most trust in other farmers to learn about new soil practices and were less trusting of traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, particularly agricultural researchers from academic and government institutions, who they believed were not empathetic towards farmers￢ﾀﾙ needs. We suggest that some farmers may indeed have had enough of traditional ￢ﾀﾘexperts￢ﾀﾙ, instead relying more on their own peer networks to learn and innovate. We discuss ways to improve trustworthy knowledge exchange between agricultural stakeholders to increase uptake of sustainable soil management practices, while acknowledging the value of peer influence and online interactions for innovation and trust building.</p
Soil management", "S1", "Farms", "land and farm management", "social media", "0211 other engineering and technologies", "02 engineering and technology", "HM", "Trust", "Article", "Social media", "Soil", "Humans", "Innovation", "2. In particular, the reflections on the design practice of public sector innovation (PSI) units, working in or with governments, are increasingly contributing to a growing body of literature attempting to characterise the practice in policy making. Although scholars conclude that design￢ﾀﾙs significant contribution in policy refers to the implementation of public services and programs, there is also an urgent advocacy for a deeper study of the nature of design practices within earlier stages of policy processes addressing more specifically policy proposals and reforms. As part of a broader investigation, this paper seeks to shed light to this matter by identifying design-led activities and methods of PSI units in the policy making process and positioning them in the stages of the policy cycle. This research examines academic, grey literature and web content to uncover and position design activities of 46 PSI units from different continents in a policy cycle model based on Howlett, Ramesh and Perl (2009). Our work confirms that most design activities develop in the implementation stage rather than in early stages of the policy process. While design interventions are growing within policy formulation and agenda-setting stages, few of them were identified in the stage of policy evaluation. Decision-making stage remains purely political. However, concern of environmental and social problems have grown due to increased production of biofuels. Therefore, many initiatives for sustainability criteria have been announced. As a part of the European Union (EU) renewable energy promotion directive (RED), the EU has introduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-saving requirements for biofuels along with the first-ever mandate methodology to calculate the GHG emission reduction. As explored in this paper, the RED methodology, based on life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach, excludes many critical issues. These include indirect impacts due to competition for land, biomass and other auxiliary inputs. Also, timing issues, allocation problems, and uncertainty of individual parameters are not yet considered adequately. Moreover, the default values provided in the RED for the GHG balances of biofuels may significantly underestimate their actual impacts. We conclude that the RED methodology cannot ensure the intended GHG emission reductions of biofuels. Instead, a more comprehensive approach is required along with additional data and indicators. Even if it may be very difficult to verify the GHG emission reductions of biofuels in practice, it is necessary to consider the uncertainties more closely, in order to mitigate climate change effectively.
life-cycle assessment", "criteria", "02 engineering and technology", "sustainability", "16. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how climate change could influence the potential for producing protein-rich crops. This study addresses this knowledge gap for the European Union. We analysed 13 protein-rich crops, using the crop suitability model EcoCrop and climate projections for the 2050s, based on 30 Global Circulation Models, under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5. The results suggest that current protein-rich crop distributions reflect climatic suitability. We demonstrate the heterogeneous impacts of climate change on crop suitability. In general, conditions in northern Europe were modelled to become more favourable for protein-rich crops, while in southern Europe modelled future climates limit the production of traditional protein-rich crops commonly grown there, including chickpea and lentil. Model results show an expanded area of high suitability for quinoa. Our results confirm the need for concerted breeding and research planning strategies to improve the tolerance of faba bean, lentil, and chickpea to the abiotic stresses that are predicted to become more common with climate change. At the same time, production in northern Europe can benefit from experimentation with protein-rich crops predicted to become more suitable there. Production planning and agricultural policy should consider these likely impacts, to encourage shifts that follow the emerging geographic patterns of crop suitability, and to support the resilience of protein-rich crop production in regions that may be negatively impacted by climate change.
2. The paper starts from the premise of a ‘food, energy and environment trilemma’ ( Tilman et al., 2009 ), where all demands to expand the area of cultivated land present high risks of increasing the carbon footprint of agriculture. Having reviewed the main drivers of demand for food and for liquid transport fuels, the paper weighs the controversies surrounding biofuels arising from food-price spikes, the demand for land, and consequent direct and indirect land-use change. It suggests that we need a more complex, and geographically differentiated, analysis of the interactions between direct and indirect land-use change. The paper then reviews evidence of land availability, and suggests that in addition to technical availability in terms of soil, water, and climate, political, social, and technological factors have significantly shaped the competition for land in different global regions, particularly the three major biofuel producing ones of the USA, Brazil and Europe. This point is further developed by reviewing the different innovation pathways for biofuels in these three regions. The main conclusion of this review is firstly that any analysis requires an integrated approach to the food-energy-environment trilemma, and secondly that strategic political direction of innovation and sustainability regulation are required to bring about major shifts in agriculture leading to sustainable intensification of cultivation ( Royal Society, 2009 ), rather than the continued expansion of cultivated area. The consequent perspective is one of considerable global variety in technologies, agricultural productive systems, and use of natural resources. This contrasts sharply with the world of a dominant global and integrated technology platform based on petro-chemicals to which we have become accustomed.
2. In the reductive reactor, the cathodic chamber supplied the reducing power to PCE dechlorinating biomass while a rutile electrode promoted the aerobic dechlorination of the less chlorinated PCE byproducts by oxygen in situ evolution. Two potentiostatic conditions, -350 and -550 mV vs SHE, were tested on the reductive reactor, which showed the capability to completely reduce the PCE into vinyl chloride (VC) and ethylene (Eth). These compounds were completely removed by the oxidative reactor with an average VC and Eth removal efficiency of 94 ± 1% and 98 ± 1%. The -350 mV vs SHE condition resulted in the higher coulombic efficiency for the reductive dechlorination which reached 22 ± 7 % while by increasing the reductive potential to -550 mV the coulombic efficiency drop down to 6 ± 1 % in favor of the methanogenesis reaction. Dehalococcoides mccartyi was found at high abundance in the reducing reactor while a heterogeneous bacterial consortium was observed in the oxidative reactor. However, the life cycle environmental benefits of both biofuels have been questioned. The aim of this study was to evaluate how environmental sustainability of forest-based and microalgae biodiesel can be estimated by using the life cycle assessment framework. These biofuel chains were chosen because they are contrasting systems, as the first one is based on a “natural” feedstock production system, while the second one is an entirely anthropogenic system using an artificial infrastructure and external inputs to grow microalgae. This study focuses on life cycle impact categories still under methodological development, namely resource depletion, land use and land use change, water use, soil quality impacts and biodiversity. In addition, climate impacts were quantified in order to exemplify the uncertainty of the results and the complexity of estimating the parameters. This study demonstrates the difficulty to assess the absolute range of the total environmental impacts of the two systems. The results propose that the greenhouse gas emissions of microalgae biodiesel are higher than those of forest residue-based biodiesel, but the results of the microalgae chain are very uncertain due to the early development stage of the technology, and due to assumptions made concerning the electricity mix. On the other hand, the microalgae system has other advantages such as low competition on productive land and low biodiversity impacts. The findings help to recognise the main characteristics of the two production chains, and the main remaining research issues on bioenergy assessment along with the methodological development needs of life cycle approaches.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "0211 other engineering and technologies", "biodiesel", "02 engineering and technology", "7. Here, an enzymatic hydrolysis process for ferulic acid (FA) extraction was optimised step by step for total wheat bran (Tritello) and then also applied to the outer bran layer (Bran 1). Proteins, reducing sugars, total phenols and FA were quantified. The highest FA yields (0.82-1.05 g/kg bran) were obtained either by rehydrating the bran by autoclaving (Tritello) or by steam explosion (Bran 1) using a bran/water ratio of 1:20, followed by enzymatic pre-treatment with Alcalase and Termamyl, to remove protein and sugars, and a final enzymatic hydrolysis with Pentopan and feruloyl esterase to solubilise phenol. FA was recovered from the final digestate via solid phase extraction. A 40-fold scale-up was also performed and the release of compounds along all the process steps and at increasing incubation times was monitored. Results showed that FA was initially present at a minimum level while it was specifically released during the enzymatic treatment. In the final optimized process, the FA extraction yield was higher than that obtained with NaOH control hydrolysis while, in comparison with other FA enzymatic extraction methods, fewer process steps were required and no buffers, strong acid/alkali nor toxic compounds were used. Furthermore, the proposed process may be easily scaled-up, confirming the feasibility of wheat bran valorisation by biorefinery processes to obtain valuable compounds having several areas of potential industrial exploitation.
Dietary Fiber", "0106 biological sciences", "0301 basic medicine", "Coumaric Acids", "Bioengineering", "Wheat bran", "01 natural sciences", "Bio-based Industries Innovation action - Demonstration", "Enzymatic extraction", "03 medical and health sciences", "Subtilisins", "European Commission", "Molecular Biology", "Knowmad Institut", "2. We aimed to unravel the DOM photoreactivity and concurrent DOM compositional changes across 30 boreal aquatic ecosystems including peat waters, streams, rivers, and lakes distributed along a water residence time (WRT) gradient. Samples were subjected to a standardized exposure of simulated sunlight. We measured the apparent quantum yield (AQY), which corresponds to DOM photomineralization per photon absorbed, and the compositional change in DOM at bulk and individual compound levels in the original samples and after irradiation. AQY increased with the abundance of terrestrially derived DOM and decreased at higher WRT. Additionally, the photochemical changes in both DOM optical properties and molecular composition resembled changes along the natural boreal WRT gradient at low WRT (<3ￂﾠyears). Accordingly, mass spectrometry revealed that the abundance of photolabile and photoproduced molecules decreased with WRT along the boreal aquatic continuum. Our study highlights the tight link between DOM composition and DOM photodegradation. We suggest that photodegradation is an important driver of DOM composition change in waters with low WRT, where DOM is highly photoreactive.</p
105904 Environmental research", "water retention time", "Oceanografi", " hydrologi och vattenresurser", "01 natural sciences", "aquatic continuum", "Oceanography", " Hydrology and Water Resources", "Photodegradation", "14. The potentially available amounts of timber, which are still lower than annual increments, have been published earlier. Access to this timber can be challenging for small-dimensioned assortments; however, technologically improved value chains can make them accessible while fulfilling economic and environment criteria. This paper evaluates the economic, environmental and social sustainability impacts of making the potentially available timber available with current and technologically improved value chains. This paper focuses on increasing the biomass feedstock supply for energy generation. Quantified impact assessments show which improvements - in terms of costs, employment, fuel and energy use, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions - can be expected if better mechanized machines are provided. Using three different methods - Sustainability Impacts Assessment (SIA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Emission Saving Criteria (ESC) - we calculated current and innovative machine solutions in terms of fuel use, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions, to quantify the impact of the technology choice and also the effect of the choice of assessment method. Absolute stand-alone values can be misleading in analyses, and the use of different impact calculation approaches in parallel is clarifying the limits of using LCA-based approaches. The article focuses on how experimental niches and sustainable activities affect farmers’ relationships with nature, and the reconceptualisation of the production system in which they operate, particularly where this system is embedded in less sustainable conventional or dominant regimes and landscapes. The need for fundamental changes, in the way that humans interact with nature, is widely argued for in order to achieve sustainable development, and farmers occupy a central role through participation in complex networks of agri-food systems. They have also found themselves disconnected from nature through conventional agri-industrial production practices. Four niches (biological control, ecological restoration, soil health, and ecological pond management) within the greenhouse sector of Almeria (SE Spain) are explored in a case study. Our results indicate that a farmer’s interaction with nature is functional, but through agroecological practices, a deeper understanding of the ecosystems in which greenhouse landscapes are embedded may be gained. Seven buffer strips (BS) adjacent to fresh water bodies, realized according to the technical data contained in the Standard 5.2 of Cross-compliance, located in different areas and climate contexts, were monitored for a period of two years. It was done in order to quantify their effectiveness in removing dissolved inorganic nitrogen conveyed through sub- surface flow from field crops with different cultural practices. Except for two case studies (sites: Lodi and Metaponto) in all monitored systems has been confirmed an outflow, permanent or temporary, through the buffer systems, with flow rates ranging from 919 to 8590 m3y-1 every 100 meters of buffer stip. The differences in flow rate were mainly due to different sizes of agricultural basins related to buffer systems, which in the case studies ranging from 3.6 to 33.3%. Based on the mass balance, was found percentages of applied inorganic nitrogen, flowing from cultivated fields to the buffer systems, varied between 1.6 and 29.4%. In most of the sites was estimated nitrogen reduction between inlet and outlet of BS, with percentages ranging from 33 to 61.9%. The exceptions were the systems with groundwater that: or have no interaction with the rhizosphere (deep flow) or not crossing the buffer zone. Low percentages of removal shall be justified by the young stage of the monitored sites, being in many cases recently converted to buffer strip. The project focuses on effective management of innovation, adherence to open science principles, and strategic application of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Task 6.4 of the project, which concentrates on Innovation and IPR Management, seeks to understand the dynamics influencing the adoption of these practices among its members. Recognizing the need for end-to-end data management, the project emphasizes standardized data collection and management while adhering to FAIR principles. Methods: The questionnaire was developed by LifeWatch ERIC to capture data reflecting current practices and perceptions in agroecology. It included 26 questions divided into four sections, focusing on existing practices, potential drivers, and barriers in innovation management, open science, and IPR. The survey was disseminated via an online platform to the ALLREADY Pilot Network, ensuring a representative sample from diverse organizations. The data collection process was closely monitored, and the responses were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach to extract meaningful insights. Data Records of the ALLREADY Project Questionnaire: The dataset, collected through an online survey platform, underwent a meticulous process of data preparation, download, formatting, and anonymization. It consists of one text file containing metadata (Readme.txt) and a single CSV file encompassing all questionnaire responses. The dataset provides a comprehensive view of innovation management, open science adoption, and IPR handling within the agroecology sector, particularly among the network of RIs and Living Labs involved in the project. Technical Validation of the ALLREADY Project Questionnaire: Several critical steps were taken to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and overall quality of the data collected. This included development and testing of the questionnaire, rigorous monitoring of the data collection process, and thorough checks for data quality and completeness. The representativeness of the sample was analyzed specifically with respect to the Pilot Network rather than the broader population involved in agroecology. Strategies were employed to counter survey fatigue and maintain respondent engagement. Usage Notes for the ALLREADY Project Questionnaire: The dataset's proper usage is vital for ensuring the validity and reproducibility of research. Researchers are advised to consider the nature of the data, the representativeness of the dataset, and its generalizability. The dataset allows for comprehensive analysis and integration of different sections, and analysts have the flexibility to handle open and write-in responses according to their research needs. A novel reference absorption instrument based on photothermal interferometry – the dual-wavelength photothermal aerosol absorption monitor PTAAM-2λ – and scattering measurements are used to characterize filter photometer artifacts in measurements of absorption coefficients of soot- and dust-dominated aerosol samples within laboratory and ambient campaigns. We provide, for different aerosol types, reference values of the multiple-scattering parameter, quantifying the artifact introduced by the interaction between the light, the particles, and the filter. The Aethalometer AE33 and the Continuous Light Absorption Photometer (CLAP) were characterized during a laboratory campaign where different soot and mineral dust samples were measured. Furthermore, ambient measurements during a campaign in Granada, Spain, were used to characterize the AE33 and MAAP (Multiangle Absorption Photometer), a pseudo-reference absorption instrument. The laboratory campaign showed significant wavelength dependence of the calibration parameter, the multiple-scattering parameter C. The C of the AE33 at 450 and 808 nm was 4.08 and 3.95 and 6.25 and 5.27 for propane soot and diesel soot, respectively. For the CLAP, the C was 5.10 and 4.26 and 6.79 and 5.80 for propane and diesel soot, respectively. For the different mineral dust samples analyzed in the laboratory, the C at 450 nm ranged between 2.74 and 3.03 for the AE33 and between 2.50 and 2.80 for the CLAP. The ambient measurements at Granada showed an overall C of 4.72 at 450 nm and of 3.90 at 808 nm for the AE33. The results for both the AE33 and the CLAP show a dependence with the particle size, with fine particles having the highest C values and with the C being reduced and leveling off for larger particles. Both the laboratory and the ambient measurements of the AE33 showed overlapping results. The cross-sensitivity to scattering was smaller for the CLAP than for the AE33. The values of the cross-sensitivity parameter ms at 450 and 808 nm were 3.0 % and 1.5 % for the AE33 and 2.4 % and 0.9 % for the CLAP. The intercomparison of the MAAP with the PTAAM-2λ during the ambient campaign in Granada showed that the MAAP overestimates the absorption coefficients for 47 % at 637 nm and features a cross-sensitivity to scattering of 2.4 %.

Make cities and human settlements inclusive", " safe", " resilient and sustainable", "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts", "Build resilient infrastructure", " promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation", "Earthwork. The adoption process of innovations at the farm level based on the circular economy concept may improve resource efficiency, allow the reuse and recovery of nutrients, and reduce the negative effect of emissions on soils, water, and air. The farmers decision to accept and adopt the innovative solutions depends mainly on the initial investments and return, benefits and costs, farm structure, farmers socio-economic characteristics, farmers attitudes, opinions and behavior and, external markets conditions among other determinant reasons. This study aims at identifying the determinant factors and barriers that affect farmers adoption of several Circular Agronomy Solutions using a semi-structured questionnaire on an exploratory sample of farmers in 5 EU countries. Preliminary results showed that the level of acceptance of the proposed innovations is highly related to farmers economic motivations and objectives. The cost of the investment, the return rate, the institutional support, risk, and environmental attitude play a relevant role in the adoption decision. Results of the adoption preferences may assist policy-makers in designing more specific and efficient measures and tools that may help farmers to face the current environmental challenges and social needs.
2. Here, we investigate the existence of this layer during erosion events recorded in Iceland and Jordan. Size-resolved dust fluxes were estimated at three levels between 2 and 4 m using the eddy-covariance method. Dust fluxes were found mainly constant only between the two upper levels in Iceland, the lower dust flux being often stronger and richer in coarse particles, while dust fluxes in Jordan were nearly constant across all levels. The wind dynamics could not explain the absence of a constant dust flux layer in Iceland. We show that the presence of stationary dust source patches in Iceland, related to surface humidity, created a non-uniform dust layer near the surface, named dust roughness sublayer (DRSL), where individual plumes behind each patch interact but do not fully mix. The lowest dust measurement level was probably located within this sublayer while the upper ones were located above, such that there the emitted dust became spatially well-mixed. This explains near the surface in Iceland, the more intermittent dust concentration, its low correlation with the dust concentrations above, and the richer dust flux in coarse particles due to their lower deposition contribution. Our findings highlight the importance of estimating dust fluxes above a dust blending height whose characteristics depend on the dust source patchiness caused by surface humidity or the presence of sparse non-erosive elements.
Make cities and human settlements inclusive", " safe", " resilient and sustainable", "Dust flux", "Build resilient infrastructure", " promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation", "Soil wind erosion", "Size distribution", "Constant flux layer", "Protect", " restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems", " sustainably manage forests", " combat desertification", " and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
Dupont, S., Klose, M., Irvine, M. The recent development of low-cost optical particle counters (OPCs) presents new opportunities for improving spatial coverage of particle concentration in the atmosphere as they are more affordable, compact, and energy efficient than traditional OPCs. In particular, these OPCs could improve our ability to quantify dust emissions in complex environments during aeolian soil erosion. The high-frequency sampling capacity (1 Hz) of some sensors may make them suitable for estimating dust emissions using the eddy-covariance method. Here, the capability of the low-cost OPC-N3 from Alphasense to estimate size-resolved dust flux using the eddy-covariance method is evaluated. During the Jordan Wind erosion And Dust Investigation (J-WADI) experiment, we tested one OPC-N3 against two traditional reference OPCs, the Promo and Fidas, from Palas GmbH. The N3 and Promo OPCs were located in close proximity to a sonic anemometer, enabling the correlation of dust concentration and vertical velocity fluctuations for estimating dust fluxes. Despite the high-temperature and dusty wind conditions of the campaign, the N3 monitored the dynamics and magnitude of dust concentration with reasonable precision. The turbulence characteristics of the dust concentration fluctuations measured by the N3, including variance, skewness, kurtosis, and energy spectrum, were similar to those from the Promo. However, the N3 flow rate exhibited variations under these outdoor conditions that affected the concentration of fine dust particles, and certain particles around 1 µm appeared to be misclassified in the upper size bin. After correcting the N3 dust concentration to address these discrepancies and after calibrating it against a reference OPC, the N3 accurately estimated the dust emission flux, with differences of less than 30 % compared to the reference OPC. Our results confirm the potential of low-cost OPCs for dust erosion research. Nonetheless, further evaluation of low-cost OPCs is still needed across different environments and weather conditions.

[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "Earth sciences", "info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/550", "Build resilient infrastructure", " promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation", "Earthwork. Iceland is a significant high-latitude dust source area. Airborne Icelandic dust influences the climate system by interacting with radiation, clouds, and biogeochemical cycles; it also affects snow and ice albedo and air quality. These impacts are sensitive to the dust’s mineralogical, chemical, and physical properties. However, comprehensive measurements and analyses of Icelandic dust particles remain limited. This study examines dust samples collected during a field campaign in the Dyngjusandur desert (August–September 2021) using active and passive aerosol sampling. Over 190 000 individual particles, ranging from 0.1 to 120 µm, were analyzed for their chemical and physical properties using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (ccSEM/EDX). Results show heterogeneity in particle size, shape, and composition. The most abundant particle type was medium-Al mixed particles, likely glass-like, comprising 35 %–92 % of the aerosol volume. Sulfate particles, suggesting volcanic contributions, were detected in some samples. Iron (Fe)- and titanium (Ti)-rich particles made up 3.3 % and 6 % of the aerosol volume, respectively, mainly in the size fraction < 1 µm. The median aspect ratio ranged from 1.37 to 1.53, increasing with particle size. Our findings highlight key differences in Icelandic dust compared to Saharan dust, including higher iron and titanium content and a lack of potassium in Icelandic dust. This research may serve to a further understanding of the design practice and its potential contribution to policy making in the future.</p
Public sector innovation units; Design methods; Public policy; Policy making; Policy cycle model; Innovation labs", "05 social sciences", "0506 political science
https://re.public.polimi.it/bitstream/11311/1203007/4/VillaAlvarez2022_MappingDesignActivitiesAndMethods.pdf
https://re.public.polimi.it/bitstream/11311/1203007/5/VillaAlvarez2022_Suplementary%20information%20476PSI%20units.pdf
https://doi.org/11311/1203007
In this report, we have compiled our learnings and experiences of working with Policy Lab. These potentials can also be managed taking into account other parameters (e.g. irrigation networks, socio-economic, land-based data, etc.). A visualisation of the data is also available at the following link: [Regional mapping](https://mviewer.openig.org/?config=/maps/openig/donnees-sols-en-occitanie.xml) The GDPA tool is based on the study of three soil cropping potentials: field crops, quantitative viticulture (PGI base) and market gardening. A synthesis of the three, the global cultural potential makes it possible to understand the capacity for cultural diversification of a soil. Thus, the soils most conducive to diversification (strong global potential) allow the development of a large number of crops. The GDPA decision support tool was established in partnership with the Association Climatologique de l’Hérault (now integrated into the Department), the Department of Hérault, the Chamber of Agriculture of Hérault and INRAE in 2012/2013. It results from the analysis and processing of agropedological data from the soil database, established and digitised in 2011. The tool is currently maintained by the Department of Hérault. It has been the subject of an update following a work complementing the soil database carried out by the Métropole de Montpellier in 2018/2019. **Completeness Limits**: The cartography ** does not cover all the Heraultese communes, nor the total area of each municipality**. As a result, **uninvented soil means a lack of data, no conclusion as to the potentiality of this soil can be inferred from this.** **Mapping precision limits**: The mapping of cropping potentials is **the scale 1/10 000th** (so-called “communal” scale). Thus, superposition with cadastral plans made on larger scales is not recommended by experts. Hérault
Mapping of the agro-pedological units of the department of Hérault with their corresponding natural terroir unit. **This data is a component of the soil database of the Department of Hérault, which also includes the cartographic data of [soil properties](https://www.herault-data.fr/explore/dataset/bd-sol-proprietes-herault/table/?disjunctive.commune) and [geology]. ** Although these data provide a lot of soil information, they do not constitute soil data per se: no scientific soil name is given, only mother rocks are specified. The aim here is to establish an agro-pedological database with a strong practical purpose. The data are derived from the programmes of zoning of the wine potential of Languedoc-Roussillon, as part of the State-Region plans for a better adaptation of grape variety between 1980 and 1996 and the departmental programme of knowledge and valorisation of terroirs between 2000 and 2006. The data were digitised as part of the Soil Digitalisation Program of the Association Climatologique de l’Hérault (now integrated into the Department) conducted in partnership with the Chambre d’Agriculture de l’Hérault and the Conseil Départemental de l’Hérault from 2009 to 2011. The methodology of agro-paedological mapping of the department of Hérault was developed on a scientific basis in collaboration with Professors P. Bonfils and G. Labau of the Laboratory of Geology and Soil Science of INRA Montpellier, from the 1980s. The base is currently corrected and maintained by the Department of Hérault. ** It was also partly completed on its territory by the Métropole de Montpellier in 2018/2019 on soil properties (complementary to date on geological and terroir characteristics).** **Completeness limits:** Mapping **does not cover all Heraultese municipalities or the total area of each municipality.** Consequently, **uninvented soil means a lack of data.** **Mapping precision limits**: The mapping is at the **1/10 000th scale (so-called “communal” scale).** They must not be used at a higher scale. Thus, superposition with cadastral plans made on larger scales is not recommended by experts. Different ** confidence indices** allow to translate the uncertainty of the cartographic limits. **The data made available should therefore be used with caution according to the accuracy limits**. The department of Hérault and its technical and scientific partners cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies in the databases and for inappropriate uses of the databases.
