Though the positions of individual states or the goal of avoided deforestation guide many approaches, our model sets cost-effective strategies for climate change mitigation and the efficient and balanced use of forest resources at its center. Current approaches to forest resource-based carbon accounting consider only a fraction of its potential and fail to adequately mobilize the LULUCF sector for the successful stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations. The presence of a significantly large \u201cincentive gap\u201d justifies the urgency of reforming the current LULUCF carbon accounting framework. In addition to significantly broadening the scope of carbon pools accounted under LULUCF, we recommend paying far greater attention to the troika of competing but potentially compatible interests surrounding the promotion of standing forests (in particular for the purposes of carbon sequestration, biodiversity protection and ecosystem promotion/ preservation), harvested wood products (HWP) and bioenergy use. The successful balancing of competing interests, the enhancement of efficiency and effectiveness and the balanced use of forest resources require an accounting mechanism that weighs and rewards each component according to its real climate mitigation potential. Further, our data suggest the benefits of such a broadly based carbon accounting strategy and the inclusion of LULUCF in national and international accounting and emission trading mechanisms far outweigh potential disadvantages. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar diferentes fra\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es da MOS e os estoques de C e N de Latossolo Vermelho distrof\uffc3\uffa9rrico t\uffc3\uffadpico muito argiloso submetido a diferentes sistemas de uso e manejo: mata nativa (MTN), eucalipto (EUC), pinus (PIN), pastagem (PAS), milho no sistema de cultivo m\uffc3\uffadnimo (MCM) e milho no sistema plantio convencional (MPC). As amostras de solo foram coletadas em setembro de 2004, nas profundidades de 0-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm, para avalia\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o dos estoques de carbono org\uffc3\uffa2nico (CO) e N total (NT); de 0-5 e 0-10 cm, para realiza\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do fracionamento f\uffc3\uffadsico-densim\uffc3\uffa9trico da MO; e de 0-5 cm, para avalia\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do C da biomassa microbiana (Cmic). O estoque de CO na \uffc3\uffa1rea de eucalipto foi maior do que o determinado na \uffc3\uffa1rea de mata. A propor\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o relativa do CO nas fra\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es da MOS aumentou na seguinte ordem: C-argila &gt; C-silte &gt; C-areia &gt; C FL. A maior parte (&gt; 90 %) do CO est\uffc3\uffa1 associada \uffc3\uffa0 fra\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o pesada da MOS, com valores pr\uffc3\uffb3ximos a 98 % nos sistemas cultivados com milho (MPC e MCM). Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are among these sources and sinks. Furthermore, soil organic matter is a key indicator of soil fertility. The Th\u00fcnen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture to conduct the first German agricultural soil inventory and obtain a first representative and consistent baseline of SOC stocks in agricultural soils across Germany. Potential explanatory variables were also assessed. Between 2009 and 2018, a total of 3104 field sites were sampled in a 8x8 km grid (Jacobs et al., 2018). The dataset contains the key data (laboratory and field) of the first German agricultural soil inventory. It consists of three parts with associated readme-files, which explain the data: LABORATORY_DATA.xlsx: This file contains all relevant laboratory results. SITE.xlsx: This file contains the most important general information on the sampled sites. HORIZON_DATA.xlsx: This file contains the soil profile description as determined in the field with several key horizon parameters. In SITE.xlsx and HORIZON_DATA.xlsx, several parameters were determined using the German soil description guidelines (Ad-Hoc-Ag Boden, 2005) and are not explained here in detail. Despite scarce empirical evidence, paludiculture is expected to have significant GHG mitigation potential for organic soils. This study provides the first comprehensive dataset on full GHG balances for newly established fen paludicultures over a water table (WT) gradient spanning annual mean WT of \u22120.29 m to +0.04 m, stratified into moderately rewetted conditions (\u22120.30 m < WT < \u22120.10 m) and rewetted conditions (WT \u2265 \u22120.10 m). We used manual and novel automated chambers to measure annual carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide emissions from five typical fen plant species (Carex acutiformis, Phalaris arundinacea, Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia and T. latifolia) newly established as peatland biomass crops in three temperate fen peatlands in southern Germany. Our study confirms a significant GHG mitigation potential for the tested plant species and found a C sink function of paludiculture. The results yield preliminary emission factors of \u22120.1 and \u221212.0 t CO2-equivalents ha\u22121 yr\u22121 under moderately rewetted conditions (n=39) and under rewetted conditions (n=43), respectively. We further identify an optimal annual mean WT of \u22120.07 m for maximizing GHG reduction across all plant species and sites with a net C sink achieved at a mean annual WT of \u2265 \u22120.12 m. Presuming the conversion of arable land into paludiculture, a mitigation potential of up to \u221251.9 t CO2-equivalent is attainable per hectare and year.
