The biochar was added to soils at 0%, 0.5% and 1.0% (w/w) and the herbicides were applied to those soil-biochar mixes at nil, half, full, two times, and four times, the recommended dosage (H(4)). Annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) was grown in biochar amended soils for 1 month. Biochar had a positive impact on ryegrass survival rate and above-ground biomass at most of the application rates, and particularly at H(4). Within any given biochar treatment, increasing herbicide application decreased the survival rate and fresh weight of above-ground biomass. Biomass production across the biochar treatment gradient significantly differed (p<0.01) and was more pronounced in the case of atrazine than trifluralin. For example, the dose-response analysis showed that in the presence of 1% biochar in soil, the value of GR(50) (i.e. the dose required to reduce weed biomass by 50%) for atrazine increased by 3.5 times, whereas it increased only by a factor of 1.6 in the case of trifluralin. The combination of the chemical properties and the mode of action governed the extent of biochar-induced reduction in bioavailability of herbicides. The greater biomass of ryegrass in the soil containing the highest biochar (despite having the highest herbicide residues) demonstrates decreased bioavailability of the chemicals caused by the wheat straw biochar. This work clearly demonstrates decreased efficacy of herbicides in biochar amended soils. The role played by herbicide chemistry and mode of action will have major implications in choosing the appropriate application rates for biochar amended soils.", "keywords": ["Carbon sequestration", "2. We investigated the impact of cover crop management methods on maize growth performance and assemblages of AMF colonizing maize roots in a field trial. The cover crop treatments comprised Italian ryegrass, wheat, brown mustard and fallow in rotation with maize.</p>RESULTS<p>The diversity of AMF communities among cover crops used for maize management was significantly influenced by the cover crop and time course. Cover crops did not affect grain yield and aboveground biomass of subsequent maize but affected early growth. A structural equation model indicated that the root colonization, AMF diversity and maize phosphorus uptake had direct strong positive effects on yield performance.</p>CONCLUSION<p>AMF variables and maize performance were related directly or indirectly to maize grain yield, whereas root colonization had a positive effect on maize performance. AMF may be an essential factor that determines the success of cover crop rotational systems. Encouraging AMF associations can potentially benefit cover cropping systems. Temperature and water availability are important drivers for ecosystem processes such as photosynthesis, carbon translocation, and organic matter decomposition. These climate changes may affect the supply of carbon and energy to the soil microbial population and subsequently alter decomposition and mineralization, important ecosystem processes in carbon and nutrient cycling. In this study, carried out within the cross-European research project CLIMOOR, the effect of climate change, resulting from imposed manipulations, on carbon dynamics in shrubland ecosystems was examined. We performed a 14C-labeling experiment to probe changes in net carbon uptake and allocation to the roots and soil compartments as affected by a higher temperature during the year and a drought period in the growing season. Differences in climate, soil, and plant characteristics resulted in a gradient in the severity of the drought effects on net carbon uptake by plants with the impact being most severe in Spain, followed by Denmark, with the UK showing few negative effects at significance levels of p \u2264 0.10. Drought clearly reduced carbon flow from the roots to the soil compartments. The fraction of the 14C fixed by the plants and allocated into the soluble carbon fraction in the soil and to soil microbial biomass in Denmark and the UK decreased by more than 60%. The effects of warming were not significant, but, as with the drought treatment, a negative effect on carbon allocation to soil microbial biomass was found. The changes in carbon allocation to soil microbial biomass at the northern sites in this study indicate that soil microbial biomass is a sensitive, early indicator of drought- or temperature-initiated changes in these shrubland ecosystems. The reduced supply of substrate to the soil and the response of the soil microbial biomass may help to explain the observed acclimation of CO2 exchange in other ecosystems.", "keywords": ["2. In silvoarable systems, trees are intercropped with arable crops, and in silvopastoral systems trees are combined with pasture for livestock. These systems may produce forage and timber as well as providing ecosystem services such as climate change mitigation. Carbon (C) is stored in the aboveground and belowground biomass of the trees, and the transfer of organic matter from the trees to the soil can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Few studies have assessed the impact of agroforestry systems on carbon storage in soils in temperate climates, as most have been undertaken in tropical regions. This study assessed five silvoarable systems and one silvopastoral system in France. All sites had an agroforestry system with an adjacent, purely agricultural control plot. The land use management in the inter-rows in the agroforestry systems and in the control plots were identical. The age of the study sites ranged from 6 to 41 years after tree planting. Depending on the type of soil, the sampling depth ranged from 20 to 100 cm and SOC stocks were assessed using equivalent soil masses. The aboveground biomass of the trees was also measured at all sites. In the silvoarable systems, the mean organic carbon stock accumulation rate in the soil was 0.24 (0.09-0.46) Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) at a depth of 30 cm and 0.65 (0.004-1.85) Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) in the tree biomass. Increased SOC stocks were also found in deeper soil layers at two silvoarable sites. Young plantations stored additional SOC but mainly in the soil under the rows of trees, possibly as a result of the herbaceous vegetation growing in the rows. At the silvopastoral site, the SOC stock was significantly greater at a depth of 30-50 cm than in the control. In this work, behaviors of Trifolium repens and Lolium perenne, growing in a metal-polluted field located near a closed lead smelter, were investigated through Cd, Pb and Zn-plant metal concentrations and their phytotoxicity. In these plant species, metals were preferentially accumulated in roots than in shoots, as follow: Cd>Zn>Pb. Plant exposure to such metals induced oxidative stress in the considered organs as revealed by the variations in malondialdehyde levels and superoxide dismutase activities. These oxidative changes were closely related to metal levels, plant species and organs. Accordingly, L. perenne seemed to be more affected by metal-induced oxidative stress than T. repens. Copper and As concentrations in soil pore water increased more than 30 fold after adding both amendments, associated with significant increases in dissolved organic carbon and pH, whereas Zn and Cd significantly decreased. Biochar was most effective, resulting in a 10 fold decrease of Cd in pore water and a resultant reduction in phytotoxicity. Concentrations of PAHs were also reduced by biochar, with greater than 50% decreases of the heavier, more toxicologically relevant PAHs. In this study, we determined the effect of elevated CO 2  on decomposition of grass root material ( Lolium perenne  L.).  14 C-labeled root material, produced under ambient (35\u00a0Pa pCO 2 ) or elevated CO 2  (70\u00a0Pa pCO 2 ) was incubated in soil for 64 days. The soils were taken from a pasture ecosystem which had been exposed to ambient (35\u00a0Pa pCO 2 ) or elevated CO 2  (60\u00a0Pa pCO 2 ) under FACE-conditions for 10 years and two fertilizer N rates: 140 and 560\u00a0kg N ha \u22121 \u00a0year \u22121 . In soil exposed to elevated CO 2 , decomposition rates of root material grown at either ambient or elevated CO 2  were always lower than in the control soil exposed to ambient CO 2 , demonstrating a change in microbial activity. In the soil that received the high rate of N fertilizer, decomposition of root material grown at elevated CO 2  decreased by approximately 17% after incubation for 64 days compared to root material grown at ambient CO 2 . The amount of  14 CO 2  respired per amount of  14 C incorporated in the microbial biomass ( q  14 CO 2 ) was significantly lower when roots were grown under high CO 2  compared to roots grown under low CO 2 . We hypothesize that this decrease is the result of a shift in the microbial community, causing an increase in metabolic efficiency. Soils exposed to elevated CO 2  tended to respire more native SOC, both with and without the addition of the root material, probably resulting from a higher C supply to the soil during the 10 years of treatment with elevated CO 2 . The results show the importance of using soils adapted to elevated CO 2  in studies of decomposition of roots grown under elevated CO 2 . Our results further suggest that negative priming effects may obscure CO 2  data in incubation experiments with unlabeled substrates. Plants were homogeneously 14C-labelled in two ESPAS growth chambers in a continuous 14C-CO2 atmosphere of 350 and 700 \u03bcL L-1 CO2 and at two soil nitrogen regimes, in order to follow the carbon flow through all plant and soil compartments. After 79 days, elevated CO2 increased the total carbon uptake by 41 and 21% at low (LN) and high nitrogen (HN) fertilisation, respectively. Shoot growth remained unaffected, whereas CO2 enrichment stimulated root growth by 46% and the root/soil respiration by 111%, irrespective of the nitrogen concentration. The total 14C-soil content increased by 101 and 28% at LN and HN, respectively. The decomposition of the native soil organic matter was not affected either by CO2 or by the nitrogen treatment. Elevated CO2 did not change the total nitrogen uptake of the plant either at LN or at HN. Both at LN and HN elevated CO2 significantly increased the total amount of nitrogen taken up by the roots and decreased the absolute and relative amounts translocated to the shoots. The amount of soil nitrogen immobilised by micro-organisms and the size of the soil microbial biomass were not affected by elevated CO2, whereas both were significantly increased at the higher soil N content. Most striking was the 88% increase in net carbon input into the soil expressed as: 14C-roots plus total 14C-soil content minus the 12C-carbon released by decomposition of native soil organic matter. The net carbon input into the soil at ambient CO2 corresponded with 841 and 1662 kg ha-1 at LN and HN, respectively. Elevated CO2 increased these amounts with an extra carbon input of 950 and 1056 kg ha-1. For the first time, we were able to collect dual\uffe2\uff80\uff90labeled soil samples to a depth of 75\uffe2\uff80\uff83cm after 10 years of elevated CO2 and determine the total amount of new soil C and N sequestered in the whole soil profile. Elevated CO2, N\uffe2\uff80\uff90fertilization rate, and species had no significant effect on total soil C. On average 9.4\uffe2\uff80\uff83Mg new C\uffe2\uff80\uff83ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921 was sequestered, which corresponds to 26.5% of the total C. The mean residence time of the C present in the 0\uffe2\uff80\uff9310\uffe2\uff80\uff83cm soil depth was calculated at 4.6\uffc2\uffb11.5 and 3.1\uffc2\uffb11.1 years for L. perenne and T. repens soil, respectively. After 10 years, total soil N and C in the 0\uffe2\uff80\uff9375\uffe2\uff80\uff83cm soil depth was unaffected by CO2 concentration, N\uffe2\uff80\uff90fertilization rate and plant species. In the first experiment, ryegrass was grown in sandy loam mixed with equal amounts of a nitrogen-rich peanut hull BC, compost, BC+compost, double compost, or no addition (control); wetting-drying cycles and N fertilization were applied. Biochar with or without compost significantly reduced NO emissions and did not change the CH uptake, whereas ryegrass yield was significantly increased. In the second experiment, 0% (control) or 8% (w/w) of BC (peanut hull, maize, wood chip, or charcoal) or 8% HC (beet chips or bark) was mixed into a soil and incubated at 65% water-holding capacity (WHC) for 140 d. Treatments included simulated plowing and N fertilization. All BCs reduced NO emissions by \u223c60%. Hydrochars reduced NO emissions only initially but significantly increased them after N fertilization to 302% (HC-beet) and 155% (HC-bark) of the control emissions, respectively. In the first experiment, CO efflux was monitored for 3 mo in plant-free soil columns across four treatments (0, 10, 50, and 100 Mg biochar ha). In the second experiment, ryegrass was grown in pots having received 17 and 54 Mg biochar ha combined with four N rates from 144 to 288 kg N ha. Our kiln method generated a wheat-straw biochar with carbon content composed of 92% of aromatic structures. Our results suggest that the biochar lost <0.16% C as CO over the 90-d incubation period. Biomass yields were not significantly modified by biochar treatments, except for a slight decrease at the 144 kg N ha rate. Foliar N concentrations were significantly reduced by biochar application. Biochar significantly increased soil water content; however, this increase did not result in increased biomass yield. In conclusion, our kiln-produced biochar was highly aromatic and appeared quite recalcitrant in soil but had no overall significant impact on ryegrass yields.", "keywords": ["2. An additional objective was to evaluate effects on milk production and rumen function, because a commensurate improvement in milk production could lead to adoption of monensin as a profitable strategy for methane abatement. Two experiments were conducted (grazing and respiratory chambers) and in both experiments monensin (471 mg/d) was topdressed on 4 kg (dry matter)/d of rolled barley grain offered in a feed trough twice daily at milking times. In the grazing experiment, 50 Holstein-Friesian cows were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 groups (control or monensin). Cows grazed together as a single herd on a predominantly ryegrass sward and received monensin over a 12-wk period, during which time measurements of milk production and body weight change were made. The SF(6) tracer technique was used to estimate methane production of 30 of the 50 cows (15 control cows and 15 monensin cows) for 3 consecutive days in wk 3, 5, 8, and 12 of treatment. Samples of rumen fluid were collected per fistula from 8 of the 50 cows (4 per diet) on 2 consecutive days in wk 3, 5, 8, and 12 of treatment and analyzed for volatile fatty acids and ammonia-N. In the metabolic chamber experiment, 10 pairs of lactating dairy cows (control and monensin) were used to determine the effects of monensin on methane emissions, dry matter intake, milk production, and body weight change over a 10-wk period. Methane emissions were measured by placing cows in respiration chambers for 2 d at wk 5 and 10 of treatment. Cows received fresh ryegrass pasture harvested daily. Monensin did not affect methane production in either the grazing experiment (g/d, g/kg of milk) or the chamber experiment (g/d, g/kg of dry matter intake, g/kg of milk). In both experiments, milk production did not increase with addition of monensin to the diet. Monensin had no effect on body weight changes in either experiment. At high feed intake levels, the proportion of energy lost as CH(4) decreases as the digestibility of the diet increases. Therefore, improving forage digestibility may improve productivity as DM and energy intake are increased. A zero-grazing experiment was conducted to determine the effect of sward DM digestibility (DMD) on DMI, CH(4) emissions, and indices of rumen fermentation of beef animals. Twelve Charolais-cross heifers were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments, with 6 heifers per dietary treatment. Additionally, 4 cannulated Aberdeen Angus-cross steers were randomly allocated to each of these 2 treatments in a crossover design. Dietary treatments consisted of swards managed to produce (i) high digestibility pasture (high DMD) or (ii) pasture with less digestibility (low DMD), both offered for ad libitum intake. All animals were zero-grazed and offered freshly cut herbage twice daily. In vitro DMD values for the high and low DMD swards were 816 and 706 g/kg of DM. Heifers offered the high DMD grass had greater (P < 0.001) daily DMI of 7.66 kg compared with 5.38 kg for those offered the low DMD grass. Heifers offered the high DMD grass had greater (P = 0.003) daily CH(4) production (193 g of CH(4)/d) than those offered the low DMD grass (138 g of CH(4)/d). However, when corrected for DMI, digestible DMI, or ingested gross energy, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in CH(4) production between dietary treatments. For cannulated steers, intake tended (P = 0.06) to be greater for the high DMD grass (5.56 vs. 4.27 kg of DM/d), but rumen protozoa (4.95 x 10(4)/mL; P = 0.62); rumen ammonia (34 mg of N/L; P = 0.24); rumen total VFA (103 mM; P = 0.58), and rumen pH (6.8; P = 0.43) did not differ between treatments. Cows in the monensin group received 2 controlled-release capsules, with the second capsule administered 130 d after the first. Milk production was measured for 100 d following insertion of each capsule. The sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas technique was used to measure enteric methane emissions for 4 d starting on d 25 and 81 after insertion of the first capsule, and on d 83 after insertion of the second capsule. All cows grazed together as a single herd on a predominantly ryegrass sward and received 5 kg/d of grain (as-fed basis). In a second experiment, 7 pairs of lactating dairy cows (control and monensin) were used to determine the effects of monensin controlled-release capsules on methane emissions and dry matter intake. Methane emissions were measured on d 75 after capsule insertion by placing cows in respiration chambers for 3 d. Cows received fresh ryegrass pasture harvested daily and 5 kg/d of grain. The release rate of monensin from the capsules used in both experiments was 240 +/- 0.072 mg/d, determined over a 100-d period in ruminally cannulated cows. The monensin dose was calculated to be 12 to 14.5 mg/kg of dry matter intake. In June and July of 2021, Fusarium and Alternaria abundance both in the wheat field (along a transect up to 64m into the field) and in the grass stripe were analyzed by qPCR with extracted DNA out of dried and ground samples. Furthermore, Fusarium species diversity was analyzed by culture-dependent methods. The mycotoxins DON and ZEA were analyzed from the harvest samples.
