It borders the Naturpark Maerkische Schweiz\n(https://nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz,\nhttps://www.naturschutzfonds.de/natur-erleben/landschaften/naturparkmaerkische-\nschweiz). </p>\n<p>It is a typical site of the glacial moraine landscape of the North German\nLowland approx. 62 m above sea level. The site of the experimental station is\nfrom flat to easily incline. Typical soil types are Albic and Ortic Luvisols, Cambic\nand Luvic Arenosols. The soils are far from groundwater with mean clay content\nof around 5-10% in the top soil (0-25 cm). Carbon content, natural pH and the\nbase-saturation are low. The topsoil (0-25 cm) contains around 1% humus. The\nsoil is free of lime. It tends to acidification and requires regular liming. </p>\n<p>The weather is characterised by a continental-influenced humid inland\nclimate with an average of 548 mm precipitation and 8.9\u00b0C annual temperature\n(reference period 1981-2010). Compared to the period 1951-1980, temperature\nand rainfall have increased by 0.7\u00b0C and 19 mm, respectively. An increase of\nperiods of pronounced pre-summer drought is the consequence of the\nchanging climate. </p>\n<h1>Main research tasks that are addressed in this focus area: </h1>\n<p>The current focus of the trials is research on climate-adapted and diversitypromoting\nagricultural systems through the implementation of new crops in crop\nrotations, conservation tillage and reduced use of pesticides, especially\nherbicides. The research station Muencheberg is in charge of two long-term\nfield trials, the \"M\u00fcncheberger N\u00e4hrstoffsteigerungsversuch V140/00\u201d (https:\n//doi.org/10.20387/bonares-8fhj-r52g) and the field model trial \u201cKrumenaufbau\u201d\nV210/02.\nIt manages 42 ha arable land. It borders the Naturpark M\u00e4rkische Schweiz (https://nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz, https://www.naturschutzfonds.de/natur-erleben/landschaften/naturpark-maerkische-schweiz).</p>\n\n<p>It is a typical site of the glacial moraine landscape of the North German Lowland approx. 62 m above sea level. The site of the experimental station is from flat to easily incline. Typical soil types are Albic and Ortic Luvisols, Cambic and Luvic Arenosols. The soils are far from groundwater with mean clay content of around 5-10% in the top soil (0-25 cm). Carbon content, natural pH and the base-saturation are low. The topsoil (0-25 cm) contains around 1% humus. The soil is free of lime. It tends to acidification and requires regular liming.</p>\n\n<p>The weather is characterised by a continental-influenced humid inland climate with an average of 548 mm precipitation and 8.9\u00b0C annual temperature (reference period 1981-2010). Compared to the period 1951-1980, temperature and rainfall have increased by 0.7\u00b0C and 19 mm, respectively. An increase of periods of pronounced pre-summer drought is the consequence of the changing climate.</p>\n\n<h1>Main research tasks that are addressed in this focus area:</h1>\n\n<p>The current focus of the trials is research on climate-adapted and diversity-promoting agricultural systems through the implementation of new crops in crop rotations, conservation tillage and reduced use of pesticides, especially herbicides. <br/>\nThe research station M\u00fcncheberg is in charge of two long-term field trials, the \"M\u00fcncheberger N\u00e4hrstoffsteigerungsversuch V140/00\u201d (https://doi.org/10.20387/bonares-8fhj-r52g) and the field model trial \u201cKrumenaufbau\u201d V210/02.<br/>\nIt manages 42 ha arable land. The monitoring was carried out by a local ornithologist according to the standards for bird monitoring in Germany. During the surveys, bird species occurrences, the number of bird individuals and the type of habitat use (according to 5 predefined categories) were recorded.  Two mappings per month were conducted from April to June, and one mapping per month from July to March. Bird observations were conducted visually and acoustically and were carried out within observation circles with a radius of 100 m that were placed in the center of six fields. The data series cover the period from 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2023. Here we aimed to reflect on the spatial distribution of soil properties like the cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH and organic carbon (Corg) content within the area of the experimental field. The experimental field consists of two plots: one planted with birch (March 1995) and one planted with Larch (March 1997). At each plot samples from the layers of a soil profile were collected up to a depth of about 1m. Additionally at each plot topsoil samples were collected from 12 location along transects (see figure at the bottom) at 0 to 5, 5 to 10, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, 20 to 25 and 25 to 30 cm. All soil samples were air dried, sieved to pass 2mm, and analyzed for pH (DIN ISO 10390 (1997) in a 0.0l m CaCl2 solution with a CG 837-pH-electrode of SCHOTT), for the CEC (DIN 19684 (1977) using a ICP OES 138 of Jobin Yvon Ltd), and for Corg content (DIN ISO 10694 (1994)). The objective of the patchCrop experiment was to analyze the potential of small-scale diversification, as created by clustering patches of 5 different crops in a single field (\u201ePatchCropping\"), for bridging ecological and farming goals for the weed flora. \nThe PatchCrop experiment was carried out as an on-farm experiment on a typical agricultural farm in NE-Germany. The field with the patch crop design (70 ha) consisted of 30 patches (6x5 field units, of 5.184 m\u00b2 each) under nine different crops organized in 2 different crop rotations and 2 weed control intensities with 3 replications. The weed flora at the PatchCropp field was compared to the weed floras at 6 sole cropped fields in the surrounding the field with the PatchCrop experiment. The 6 reference sole cropping fields had a size between 10 and 46 ha and included 2 weed control intensities analogous to those at the PatchCrop field. N2O emissions are highly important in this regard as N2O is a very powerful greenhouse gas. Agriculture is the main human-induced source for N2O emissions contributing roughly 60% to total N2O emissions. Soil amorphous silica (ASi) contents are reduced in arable soils due to yearly exports by crop harvest as most crops are silicon accumulator plants. Most recently it has been shown that ASi is increasing water and nutrient availability in soils. Both factors are known to directly and indirectly affect N2O emissions from agroecosystems. This dataset originates from a study which we conducted at a field plot trial on arable soil depleted in ASi and fertilized this soil its pre-agricultural ASi level. The data  shows that increasing soil ASi to a pre-agricultural level decreased seasonal N2O emissions by ~30%. This reduction of N2O emissions due to ASi might be of global relevance as agricultural practice has reduced the ASi content in agricultural soils. If future studies confirm the effect of ASi on N2O emissions, the soil ASi depletion by agricultural practice in the last decades may have led to a substantial increases of N2O emissions. We investigated the effect of irrigation and wheat variety on the systems\u2019 performance. The experiment was set up as a randomized block trial with 6 replicates over 3 years from 2021-2023. We had three cropping systems: sole soy, sole winter wheat, and winter wheat soy relay intercropping. Sole crops were managed with 12.5 cm and 50 cm row width for wheat and soy, respectively. \n\nRelay intercropping was managed as double 12.5 cm row of winter wheat with a 37.5 cm gap where soy was drilled in the spring. We additionally tested two irrigation levels (irrigated and rainfed) as well as two winter wheat varieties (RGT Reform and Moschus) for a total of 10 treatments and 60 plots per year. Plots were 3 x 8 m in size and managed conventionally. At 3-4 points in the growing season, we measured several aspects of crop development and resource use including leaf area index (LAI), soil moisture, plant height, and biomass allocations. At harvest we measured grain yield, grain N, P and K, and thousand grain weight. Detailed soil and weather data is part of this data set. The experiment serves for agronomic studies (e.g. the paper \u2018Seasonal soil health dynamics in soy-wheat relay intercropping\u2019 by Thompson et al.) and for soil-crop modelling (e.g. the paper \u2018Modelling crop yield in a wheat\u2013soybean relay intercropping system: A simple routine in capturing competition for light\u2019 by Yu et al.). Their abundance and diversity is affected by soil properties as well as management. In the On-Farm Tillage Experiment Lietzen, Landkreis M\u00e4rkisch-Oderland, since 1996, two different soil tillage practices, conventional inverting tillage, and reduced non-inverting tillage, are applied to two formerly conventionally tilled halves of a 73 ha field of the Komturei Lietzen. Under each treatment, 21 permanent plots were installed, allowing to analyse the response of different soils, induced by landscape position, to the tillage treatments. The data set describes the abundance and species composition of earthworms, assessed by means of handsorting, between 1997 and 2007 at all plots. In addition, selected soil properties (content clay, cation-exchange capacity) are reported.
