While the methodology has been tested in specific Mediterranean case studies, it is also applicable in other locations and regions. Our integrated approach provides new insights into the development of terraced agrarian landscapes and the changing dynamics in land management. It can provide knowledge of the extent to which past change has influenced present\uffe2\uff80\uff90day landscapes and has implications for the development of sustainable landscape practices. While OR quality may influence SOC and N stabilization within aggregates, the simultaneous addition of N-fertilizers may enhance OR decomposition resulting in loss of SOC. A mesocosm study was conducted on a clayey soil at Embu and a sandy soil at Machanga in central Kenya to determine the influence of soil texture, OR quality and N-fertilizer on aggregation, SOC and N.  Tithonia diversifolia  (high quality),  Calliandra calothyrsus  (medium quality) and  Zea mays  (maize; low quality) residues, natural abundance or labeled with  15 N, were applied to soil at an equivalent rate of 4\u00a0Mg\u00a0C\u00a0ha \u22121  compared to no input control. Each treatment was fertilized with 120\u00a0kg  14 N or  15 N\u00a0ha \u22121  as (NH 2 ) 2 CO, or not fertilized. Soil samples were collected at installation of the mesocosms (start), and 8 months after installation (end). Soils were separated into different aggregate size fractions by wet sieving and macroaggregates were further fractionated to isolate microaggregates-within-macroaggregates. Total soil and aggregate fractions were analyzed for SOC and N. On average, 20% and 70% of SOC and N was in the macroaggregates in the sandy and clayey soils, respectively. There were no differences among OR quality in both soils but in the clayey soil all ORs resulted in greater SOC and N than in the control. However, proportions of OR-derived N in the macroaggregates, mostly in the microaggregates-within-macroaggregates were greater with sole applied maize in the clayey soil. The addition of N-fertilizer together with maize stover reduced soil N, macroaggregate N, and OR-derived N in the microaggregate and silt and clay fractions within macroaggregates compared to when maize was applied alone. In the sandy soil,  Calliandra  resulted in greater OR-derived N than  Tithonia  in the coarse particulate organic matter (cPOM; i.e., 5% compared to 2% of N applied). Thus, the greater polyphenol concentration in  Calliandra  likely slowed its decomposition compared to that of  Tithonia . In addition, greater proportions of N and residue-derived N in the macroaggregates were observed in the coarse POM in the sandy soil whereas in the clayey soil it was in the microaggregates-within-macroaggregates. Ocean island basalt samples, spanning a range of radiogenic isotopic flavours (HIMU, EM) show a limited range in \u03b494/90ZrIPGP-Zr (0.046\u202f\u00b1\u202f0.037\u2030; 2sd, n\u202f=\u202f13). Similarly, MORB samples with chondrite-normalized La/Sm of >0.7 show a limited range in \u03b494/90ZrIPGP-Zr (0.053\u202f\u00b1\u202f0.040\u2030; 2sd, n\u202f=\u202f8). In contrast, basaltic lavas from mantle sources that have undergone significant melt depletion, such as depleted normal MORB (N-MORB) show resolvable variations in \u03b494/90ZrIPGP-Zr, from \u22120.045\u202f\u00b1\u202f0.018 to 0.074\u202f\u00b1\u202f0.023\u2030. Highly evolved igneous differentiates (>65\u202fwt% SiO2) from Hekla volcano in Iceland are isotopically heavier than less evolved igneous rocks, up to 0.53\u2030. These results suggest that both mantle melt depletion and extreme magmatic differentiation leads to resolvable mass-dependent Zr isotope fractionation. We find that this isotopic fractionation is most likely driven by incorporation of light isotopes of Zr within the 8-fold coordinated sites of zircons, driving residual melts, with a lower coordination chemistry, towards heavier values. Using a Rayleigh fractionation model, we suggest a \u03b1zircon-melt of 0.9995 based on the whole rock \u03b494/90ZrIPGP-Zr values of the samples from Hekla volcano (Iceland). Zirconium isotopic fractionation during melt-depletion of the mantle is less well-constrained, but may result from incongruent melting and incorporation of isotopically light Zr in the 8-fold coordinated M2 site of orthopyroxene. Based on these observations lavas originating from the effect of melt extraction from a depleted mantle source (N-MORB) or that underwent zircon saturation (SiO2\u202f>\u202f65\u202fwt%) are removed from the dataset to give an estimate of the primitive mantle Zr isotope composition of 0.048\u202f\u00b1\u202f0.032\u2030; 2sd, n\u202f=\u202f48. These data show that major controls on Zr fractionation in the Earth result from partial melt extraction in the mantle and by zircon fractionation in differentiated melts. Conversely, fertile mantle is homogenous with respect to Zr isotopes. However, inferring source melt Si isotope composition from out-of-context minerals is hampered by the fact that, to-date, there is limited Si isotope equilibrium fractionation data for minerals. Here, we report experimental data to constrain Si isotope equilibrium fractionation between zircon and quartz, using two fundamentally different strategies, but with the same experimental design. First, zircon and quartz were hydrothermally synthesized from Zr(OH)4 and SiO2 at 1.5\u202fGPa and temperatures of 725, 800, and 900\u202f\u00b0C. The second experimental strategy utilized the three-isotope method; the starting materials consisted of natural zircon and isotopically-labelled SiO2. Three sets of hydrothermal time-series experiments were conducted at the same pressure and temperatures as the direct synthesis experiments. For all experiments, quartz and zircon were separated and 30Si/28Si and 29Si/28Si ratios were measured by solution multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. To further understand moldavite genesis, the Cu and Zn abundances and isotope compositions were measured in a suite of tektites from four different substrewn fields (South Bohemia, Moravia, Cheb Basin, Lusatia) and chemically diverse sediments from the surroundings of the Ries impact structure. Moldavites are slightly depleted in Zn (~10\uffe2\uff80\uff9320%) and distinctly depleted in Cu (&gt;90%) relative to supposed sedimentary precursors. Moreover, the moldavites show a wide range in \uffce\uffb466Zn values between 1.7 and 3.7\uffe2\uff80\uffb0 (relative to JMC 3\uffe2\uff80\uff900749 Lyon) and \uffce\uffb465Cu values between 1.6 and 12.5\uffe2\uff80\uffb0 (relative to NIST SRM 976) and are thus enriched in heavy isotopes relative to their possible parent sedimentary sources (\uffce\uffb466Zn\uffc2\uffa0=\uffc2\uffa0\uffe2\uff88\uff920.07 to +0.64\uffe2\uff80\uffb0; \uffce\uffb465Cu\uffc2\uffa0=\uffc2\uffa0\uffe2\uff88\uff920.4 to +0.7\uffe2\uff80\uffb0). In particular, the Cheb Basin moldavites show some of the highest \uffce\uffb465Cu values (up to 12.5\uffe2\uff80\uffb0) ever observed in natural samples. The relative magnitude of isotope fractionation for Cu and Zn seen here is opposite to oxygen\uffe2\uff80\uff90poor environments such as the Moon where Zn is significantly more isotopically fractionated than Cu. One possibility is that monovalent Cu diffuses faster than divalent Zn in the reduced melt and diffusion will not affect the extent of Zn isotope fractionation. These observations imply that the capability of forming a redox environment may aid in volatilizing some elements, accompanied by isotope fractionation, during the impact process. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la movilidad de metales en balsas mineras enmendadas con biochar y/o compost urbano y la efectividad de las enmiendas reduciendo la toxicidad de la soluci\u00f3n ed\u00e1fica para una planta pionera (Zygophyllum fabago). Se llev\u00f3 a cabo un experimento en mesocosmos (20 meses) con residuo minero con y sin enmienda. Los mesocosmos se mantuvieron a capacidad de campo con agua de la red y se drenaron en diferentes momentos. Se monitoriz\u00f3 la soluci\u00f3n ed\u00e1fica regularmente (pH, conductividad el\u00e9ctrica, carbono org\u00e1nico soluble \u2013COS--, nitr\u00f3geno total soluble \u2013NTS- y metales -Mn, Zn-), al igual que el drenaje. Se realiz\u00f3 un bioensayo con semillas de Z. fabago con la soluci\u00f3n ed\u00e1fica de mitad del experimento (germinaci\u00f3n de semillas, crecimiento de pl\u00e1ntulas). Los tratamientos con compost urbano mostraron mayor concentraci\u00f3n inicial de COS y metales en soluci\u00f3n. Se observ\u00f3 un descenso temporal de la concentraci\u00f3n de DOC y metales en la soluci\u00f3n ed\u00e1fica debido a su lixiviaci\u00f3n en el drenaje. A pesar del mayor contenido de metales, el compost urbano favoreci\u00f3 la elongaci\u00f3n de la ra\u00edz debido al mayor contenido de COS y NTS en soluci\u00f3n. Este ensayo compara el impacto del biochar de alperujo y el compost vegetal en las propiedades del suelo, la productividad del cultivo, la fisiolog\u00eda del olivo y las tasas de respiraci\u00f3n del suelo en una plantaci\u00f3n super-intensiva de arbequina bajo riego deficitario (30% demanda h\u00eddrica). Se aplicaron dosis equivalentes a 40 t/ha de biochar, compost y una mezcla de ambos (50% p/p), junto con parcelas no enmendadas (control), totalizando 96 parcelas de 1 m\u00b2 (24 por tratamiento). El biochar aument\u00f3 significativamente la capacidad de retenci\u00f3n de agua del suelo, redujo la compactaci\u00f3n y mejor\u00f3 el potencial h\u00eddrico de las plantas. Mejor\u00f3 la tasa de fotos\u00edntesis neta de los olivos en per\u00edodos pre-cosecha, la eficiencia del uso del agua y la tasa de transporte electr\u00f3nico en los \u00e1rboles, incrementando un 15% el rendimiento en peso del fruto. Sin embargo, el rendimiento neto de aceite por \u00e1rbol fue similar debido al mayor contenido de humedad en las aceitunas.
