A review and synthesis of current knowledge on contaminant concentrations, fate in the environment and risk assessment
Use of nutrients recycled from societal waste streams in agriculture is part of the circular economy, and in line with organic farming principles. Nevertheless, diverse contaminants in waste streams create doubts among organic farmers about potential risks for soil health. Here, we gather the current knowledge on contaminant levels in waste streams and recycled nutrient sources, and discuss associated risks. For potentially toxic elements (PTEs), the input of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) from mineral feed supplements remains of concern, while concentrations of PTEs in many waste streams have decreased substantially in Europe. The same applies to organic contaminants, although new chemical groups such as flame retardants are of emerging concern and globally contamination levels differ strongly. Compared to inorganic fertilizers, application of organic fertilizers derived from human or animal feces is associated with an increased risk for environmental dissemination of antibiotic resistance. The risk depends on the quality of the organic fertilizers, which varies between geographical regions, but farmland application of sewage sludge appears to be a safe practice as shown by some studies (e.g. from Sweden). Microplastic concentrations in agricultural soils show a wide spread and our understanding of its toxicity is limited, hampering a sound risk assessment. Methods for assessing public health risks for organic contaminants must include emerging contaminants and potential interactions of multiple compounds. Evidence from long-term field experiments suggests that soils may be more resilient and capable to degrade or stabilize pollutants than often assumed. In view of the need to source nutrients for expanding areas under organic farming, we discuss inputs originating from conventional farms vs. non-agricultural (i.e. societal) inputs. Closing nutrient cycles between agriculture and society is feasible in many cases, without being compromised by contaminants, and should be enhanced, aided by improved source control, waste treatment and sound risk assessments.
Organic farming", "organic agriculture", "Risk Assessment", "630", "Societal wastes", "12. A promising option is eco-functional intensification through organic farming, an approach based on using and enhancing internal natural resources and processes to secure and improve agricultural productivity, while minimizing negative environmental impacts. In this concept an active soil microbiota plays an important role for various soil based ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, erosion control and pest and disease regulation. Several studies have reported a positive effect of organic farming on soil health and quality including microbial community traits. However, so far no systematic quantification of whether organic farming systems comprise larger and more active soil microbial communities compared to conventional farming systems was performed on a global scale. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis on current literature to quantify possible differences in key indicators for soil microbial abundance and activity in organic and conventional cropping systems. All together we integrated data from 56 mainly peer-reviewed papers into our analysis, including 149 pairwise comparisons originating from different climatic zones and experimental duration ranging from 3 to more than 100 years. Overall, we found that organic systems had 32% to 84% greater microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, total phospholipid fatty-acids, and dehydrogenase, urease and protease activities than conventional systems. Exclusively the metabolic quotient as an indicator for stresses on microbial communities remained unaffected by the farming systems. Categorical subgroup analysis revealed that crop rotation, the inclusion of legumes in the crop rotation and organic inputs are important farming practices affecting soil microbial community size and activity. Furthermore, we show that differences in microbial size and activity between organic and conventional farming systems vary as a function of land use (arable, orchards, and grassland), plant life cycle (annual and perennial) and climatic zone. In summary, this study shows that overall organic farming enhances total microbial abundance and activity in agricultural soils on a global scale.
Crops", " Agricultural", "2. This, together with an increasing demand for fertilizer and pesticide reduction has led to consider different and new approaches. We investigate the effect of Hartmannibacter diazotrophicus strain E19, a plant growth promoting rhizobacterium, in order to enhance the production of wheat and barley under low energy input. For that, we analyze the effect of three factors: organic fertilizer (with and without, only wheat), row distance (15 cm and 50 cm), and bacterial inoculation (E19 and control) at two different organic experimental field stations (Gladbacherhof and Kleinhohenheim). The dataset provides information about different parameter determined from rhizosphere soil and root samples collected at two different developmental stages (flowering and milk/fully ripe), as well as, the grain yield, straw yield, 1000 kernel mass, and seed quality during the seasons 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. The following soil parameter were evaluated: ammonium, nitrate, carbon-nitrogen ratio, microbial biomass, the respiration activity using different carbon sources (glucose, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, arginine). These data sets are currently under evaluation and complemented with the quantification from root samples through quantitative PCR (qPCR) of strain E19 and the metabarcoding sequencing of the bacterial communities based on 16S rRNA genes obtained from rhizosphere soil samples during the two seasons. Culturable fungi, actinomycete and nematode counts showed a consistent trend towards higher numbers under fully organic management but these data were not statistically significant. No differences were found in the fungal/bacterial ratio. DGGE banding patterns and sequencing of excised bands showed clear differences between treatments. Putative onion fungal pathogens were predominantly sequenced under conventional soil treatment practices whilst putative soil suppressive bacterial species were predominantly sequenced from the organic pest￢ﾀﾐcontrol treatment plots.
CONCLUSION
Organic management increased microbial activity and diversity. In an attempt to address this problem, we tested 340 EU agricultural topsoil samples for multiple pesticide residues. These samples originated from 4 representative EU case study sites (CSS), which covered 3 countries and four of the main EU crops: vegetable and orange production in Spain (S-V and S-O, respectively), grape production in Portugal (P-G), and potato production in the Netherlands (N-P). Soil samples were collected between 2015 and 2018 after harvest or before the start of the growing season, depending on the CSS. Conventional and organic farming results were compared in S-V, S-O and N-P. Soils from conventional farms presented mostly mixtures of pesticide residues, with a maximum of 16 residues/sample. Soils from organic farms had significantly fewer residues, with a maximum of 5 residues/sample. The residues with the highest frequency of detection and the highest content in soil were herbicides: glyphosate and its main metabolite AMPA (P-G, N-P, S-O), and pendimethalin (S-V). Total residue content in soil reached values of 0.8 mg kg-1 for S-V, 2 mg kg-1 for S-O and N-P, and 12 mg kg-1 for P-G. Organic soils presented 70-90% lower residue concentrations than the corresponding conventional soils. There is a severe knowledge gap concerning the effects of the accumulated and complex mixtures of pesticide residues found in soil on soil biota and soil health. Safety benchmarks should be defined and introduced into (soil) legislation as soon as possible. Soil remediation techniques should be developed to keep the levels of pesticide residues below such benchmarks. Furthermore, the process of transitioning to organic farming should take into consideration the residue mixtures and their residence time in soil. &#160;</p>

2. The model vineyard-soil (Mâcon-France) experienced a long-term field-experiment that consisted in amendments and vegetations with various materials and plants. We studied specifically the effect of Straw (S) and Conifer Compost (CC) organic amendments and Clover (Cl) and Fescue (F) vegetation on the fate of copper (fungicide) in the surface layer of this loamy soil, through a comparison with the Non Amended soil (NA). After collection the five soils were immediately physically fractionated in order to obtain 5 granulometric size-fractions. All soils and size-fractions were quantitatively characterized in terms of granulometry, chemical content and copper distribution, speciation and bioavailability to bacteria and plants. The results showed strong increases of soil-constituents aggregation for all treatments (Cl>CC>S>F>NA), in relation with the increased cementation of soil-constituents by organic matter (OM). The distribution patterns of all major elements and organic carbon were found highly variable within the soil sub-fractions and also between the 5 treatments. Due to their specific inorganic and organic composition, soil sub-fractions can thus be considered as a specific microbial habitat. Added OM accumulated preferentially in the 20-2 μm and in the >250 μm of the 5 soils. The distribution patterns of copper as well as its speciation and bioavailability to bacteria in the soil sub-fractions were shown to be strongly different among the five soils, in relation with OM distribution. Our results also suggest that Cu-bioavailability to plants is controlled by soil-rhizosphere structure. Altogether our results permitted to show that long-term organic management of a vineyard soil induced stable modifications of soil physical and chemical properties at both macro and micro-scales. These modifications affected in turn the micro-scale biogeochemistry of copper, and especially its bioavailability to bacteria and plants.
2. People often buy organic food because they believe organic farms produce more nutritious and better tasting food from healthier soils. Here we tested if there are significant differences in fruit and soil quality from 13 pairs of commercial organic and conventional strawberry agroecosystems in California. At multiple sampling times for two years, we evaluated three varieties of strawberries for mineral elements, shelf life, phytochemical composition, and organoleptic properties. We also analyzed traditional soil properties and soil DNA using microarray technology. We found that the organic farms had strawberries with longer shelf life, greater dry matter, and higher antioxidant activity and concentrations of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds, but lower concentrations of phosphorus and potassium. In one variety, sensory panels judged organic strawberries to be sweeter and have better flavor, overall acceptance, and appearance than their conventional counterparts. We also found the organically farmed soils to have more total carbon and nitrogen, greater microbial biomass and activity, and higher concentrations of micronutrients. Organically farmed soils also exhibited greater numbers of endemic genes and greater functional gene abundance and diversity for several biogeochemical processes, such as nitrogen fixation and pesticide degradation. Our findings show that the organic strawberry farms produced higher quality fruit and that their higher quality soils may have greater microbial functional capability and resilience to stress. Therefore, datasets from 74 studies from pairwise comparisons of organic vs. nonorganic farming systems were subjected to metaanalysis to identify differences in soil organic carbon (SOC). We found significant differences and higher values for organically farmed soils of 0.18 ￂﾱ 0.06% points (mean ￂﾱ 95% confidence interval) for SOC concentrations, 3.50 ￂﾱ 1.08 Mg C ha￢ﾈﾒ1for stocks, and 0.45 ￂﾱ 0.21 Mg C ha￢ﾈﾒ1y￢ﾈﾒ1for sequestration rates compared with nonorganic management. Here, for the first time, we performed a meta-analysis and found that the GGP largely increased the soil organic carbon (SOC). The SOC was increased by 48.1%, 25.4%, and 25.5% at soil depths of 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, and 40-60 cm, respectively. Moreover, this carbon accumulation has significantly increased over time since GGP implementation. The carbon accumulation showed a significantly more active response to the GGP in the top 20 cm of soil than in the deeper soil layers. Conversion of cropland to forest could lead to significantly greater SOC accumulation than would the conversion of cropland to grassland. Conversion from cropland to woodland could lead to greater SOC accumulation than would the conversion to either shrubland or orchard. Our results suggest that the GGP implementation caused SOC to accumulate and that there remains a large potential for further accumulation of carbon in the soil, which will help to mitigate climate change in the near future.
Living mulch (LM) has been shown to provide several environmental services; however, LM management is required to avoid competition between service crops and cash crops. The aim of this trial was to evaluate two innovative LM-based management systems: a system that provided LM growth regulation by means of flaming (LM-FL) and a system where the LM was regularly mowed by an autonomous mower (LM-AM), both compared with a control without LM and based on standard tillage operations (TILL). The three management systems were evaluated in terms of crop production, weed control, and energy consumption on a 2 yr organic crop rotation of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var botrytis) and eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). LM-AM produced an acceptable fresh marketable yield for both vegetable crops. Moreover, the weed dry biomass obtained in LM-AM-managed plots was lower compared to the LM-FL plots and ranged approximately from 200 to 300 kg ha￢ﾈﾒ1. Furthermore, LM-AM management resulted in lower energy consumption (￢ﾈﾒ2330 kWh ha￢ﾈﾒ1 with respect to the TILL system and ￢ﾈﾒ7225 kWh ha￢ﾈﾒ1 with respect to the LM-FL system).
Organic farming", "SEWAGE-SLUDGE", "LONG-TERM IMPACT", "PATHOGENIC BACTERIA", "Environmental Sciences & Ecology", "Risk Assessment", "630", "Societal wastes", "12. Variable definitions can be found here: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15276082 In Frick (Switzerland), a long-term experiment was established at the farm of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) in autumn 2002 on a clay loam (Stagnic Eutric Cambisol). In this three-factorial experiment, a reduced tillage system with a chisel plough to a depth of 10 cm is compared to conventional ploughing to a depth of approx. 20 cm, a liquid manure system is compared to a compost manure system and the adding of biodynamic preparations is compared to none preparations. Biodynamic preparations had been assessed previously in system comparison experiments, however, their effect is difficult to elucidate separately in a system comparison approach. One reason for setting up this experiment was therefore a demand among farmers and researchers in early 2000 to disentangle the influence of biodynamic preparations from the influence of manure compost on soil fertility. On the other hand, it should be tested if and how reduced tillage is feasible in organic farming. This dataset consists of plot data for yield, soil and management from 2002 to 2018. The crop rotation at the start of the experiment was winter wheat, sunflower, spelt and two years of grass clover. Sunflower was excluded after 2010 because of total yield loss due to slugs. For yield, total aboveground plant biomass is given for silage maize, grass-clover and cover crops, grain yield for winter wheat, spelt and sunflowers. Total nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the yield components are given as well. Weed data is given as total weed cover and/or total weed biomass in the years with row crops. For pests and diseases, Fusarium toxins (DON) are given for 2003 and slug emergence for 2010. For soil data, soil organic carbon content, total nitrogen content and pH are given plotwise for the layers 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm in three year intervals generally. Bulk density is available for some years and plots.
At 6 and 12 mo of storage, the main fungi found were Aspergillus sp . and Penicillium sp . Prior to storage, the Bipolaris sp . fungi was identified only in organic rice. For conventional rice, the infestation level by Aspergillus sp. increased from 3% to 70% at the 6th mo of storage. In addition to the advantage of organic rice being free of agrochemicals, this study revealed that natural plant defense compounds could be produced when the rice was subjected to more biotic and abiotic stresses. However, some disadvantages were observed, such as lower protein content and a greater percentage of soluble protein, which favored the breaking of rice in processing, and a greater percentage of grain stained before and during storage.
                                                           Practical Application
The organic and conventional cropping systems affect the physicochemical and technological properties of rice grains, which is one of the main cereals grown and consumed in the world. This study shows the advantages and disadvantages of the cropping system in grain properties that are in the interest of both consumers and processing industries.

0301 basic medicine", "2. This region is characterized by its rolling hills landscape, standing at an elevation ranging from 150 to 600 meters (Hohes Gras 614.8 m above sea level), which significantly influences the local climate and soil conditions.

The terrain is predominantly formed by loess and clay, with soil types primarily consisting of Luvisols and ###, which are typically fertile but require careful management to prevent compression and ensure sustainability. The soils have a high silt content and a low to moderate clay content, with organic matter levels in the topsoil (0-25 cm) generally around 1.5-3% indicating a good potential for agricultural productivity. Altough it is partly relatively dry in the region.

According to the Köppen–Geiger Climate Classification, the climate of the North Hessian Hill Country. is classified as Cfb, i.e., warm temperate and fully humid, with warm summers, with an average annual precipitation of approximately 600-800 mm and an average annual temperature of around 9.3°C (reference period 1991-2020). Recent decades have seen a slight increase in temperature reflecting broader patterns of climate change that can affect farming practices and ecosystem resilience in the area.

The focus of research in Neu-Eichenberg and Domäne Frankenhausen includes the development and testing of sustainable agricultural practices tailored to the conditions of the North Hessian Hill Country. This involves the integration of agroforestry systems, the optimization of crop rotations to enhance soil health and biodiversity, and the implementation of organic farming techniques to reduce chemical inputs.

Specific long-term experiments conducted in this focus area include studies on the impact of diversified cropping systems on soil fertility and crop yield stability, as well as the efficacy of various conservation tillage practices in preserving soil moisture and preventing erosion.

The two research sites in the area manage in total over 336 hectares of arable land, with Soilscores ranging from 38-87 supporting a wide range of field trials and observational studies aimed at improving agricultural sustainability and resilience in the face of changing climate conditions. These efforts are crucial for developing adaptive strategies that can ensure food security and environmental protection in the North Hessian Hill Country and beyond.

The two research sites belong to two different “natural areas” (ger.: Naturräumen). Domäne Frankenhausen belongs to the so called “westhessische senke (343.4)“ and the Research Site Neu-Eichenberg belongs to “ Weser-Leine mountain region “ (372.70). Winter rye plants grown in a long-time field trial (Thy_ABS; 52°15’ N, 13°14’ E, 44 m a.s.l.) under conventional or organic farming practices were inoculated after plant emergence in autumn 2020 with a beneficial microbial consortium containing Pseudomonas sp. (RU47, drench inoculation with 2 L per m² of 7.5 x 107 CFU mL-1), Bacillus atrophaeus (ABi03, drench inoculation with 2 L per m² of 7.5 x 107 CFU mL-1) and Trichoderma harzianum (OMG16, soil inoculation with 100 mg inoculum per m²). The density of the microbial inoculants in the rhizosphere and root-associated soil as well as the plant performance and nutrient status was quantified in autumn and the following spring. Selective plating demonstrated that the beneficial microbes successfully colonized the rhizosphere and root-associated soil of winter rye throughout its early growth cycle. The 300 ha commercial farm integrates research, teaching, and knowledge transfer, and is located in the northernmost part of the Nordhessische Senke, the Hofgeismarer Rötsenke, 9 km north of Kassel. The approximately 12 km wide, slightly hilly, open depression is bordered to the east by the Reinhardswald (red sandstone) and to the west by the Oberwälder Land and the Langen- and Staufenbergplatte (limestone plates of the middle and lower shell limestone). The Esse, which drains to the Diemel and Weser, lies in the lowest part of the depression at approx. 209 m above sea level, while the highest hills reach 259 m above sea level. The depression itself, in which the farm areas are located, consists of soft claystones (early triassic, Röt), which are partly overlaid with loess of varying thickness.
The warm temperate summer rain climate (Cfb according to the Köppen-Geiger Climate Classification) is characterized by an annual average temperature of 10.0°C and an annual precipitation of 553 mm (ten-year average 2014-2024). The vegetation is open farmland with a small proportion of grassland, apart from some basalt knolls and red marls covered with pearl grass-beech forests.
The Jungfernbach with its young alluvial sediments alongside divides the farm area into two geological sections: in the western part, where the experimental areas are located, there are loess sediment of up to 7.5 m thickness, in the eastern part, hills of weathered claystone are located with no or thin loessial layers. The agroforestry experiment is located in this part. On the hills, Luvisols developed, which were slightly eroded at slopes, and colluvial soils accumulated as Anthrosols and stagnic Anthrosols in depressions. Cambisols and Vertisols developed from weathered claystone without loess layers, and Luvisols are found on weathered claystone with thin loess layers.
There are two crop rotations in arable farming: alfalfa or clover grass, winter wheat, potatoes and field vegetables (carrots, beet, onions) are grown on the areas with loess cover, while the crop rotation on the areas without loess consists of clover grass, wheat, spelt, oats and maize. There is once again a dairy herd with 100 dairy cows plus offspring (German black and white lowland cattle, a dual-purpose breed) and a mobile henhouse with 300 animals. The farm also runs a farm store and a self-harvest vegetable area with around 100 plots.
All areas are located in the water protection zone IIIA.
Research at Frankenhausen is done both in the area of cropping systems and livestock. The soil in Neu-Eichenberg is a Typic Hapludalf with 13% clay, 84% silt, and 3% sand, featuring 1-2% organic matter and a pH of 6.0(Bilibio et al., 2023; Schmidt et al., 2017). The field has a slight slope of 1-3%.

According to the Köppen–Geiger Climate Classification, Neu-Eichenberg's climate is classified as Cfb, i.e., warm temperate and fully humid, with warm summers, average annual precipitation of approximately 663 mm, and an average annual temperature of around 9.3°C (reference period 1991-2020). Recent decades have seen a slight increase in temperature, reflecting broader patterns of climate change that can affect farming practices and ecosystem resilience in the area.

Research in Neu Eichenberg focuses on developing and testing sustainable and agroecological agricultural practices that are appropriate for the region's conditions.
