However, it has been found to increase the loss of dissolved P with surface runoff, but the reasons for that have rarely been examined in detail. The objective of the present study was to determine the chemical factors explaining this response by investigating the impact of NT on the type and distribution of P reserves as well as on organic carbon (C) in the 0–35 cm topsoil layer of clay soil profiles (Vertic Cambisols). Soil samples were taken from two experimental fields (Jokioinen and Aurajoki) at 0–5, 5–20 and 20–35 cm depths in conventionally tilled (CT) and non-tilled (for 4–5 years) plots. The plots had been cultivated and fertilized according to the common field practices in Finland (15–18 kg P and 100–128 kg N ha −1 year −1 ). Inorganic and organic P reserves characterized by a modified Chang and Jackson fractionation procedure were not significantly affected by the cultivation methods. However, in the uppermost soil layer (0–5 cm) in NT of the Jokioinen field, the labile P determined by water extraction (P w ) increased significantly, whereas the increase in P extracted with acid ammonium acetate (P AAC ) remained statistically insignificant. The increase in labile P coincided with a significant increase in organic carbon (C), which supports the theory that competition between organic anions and phosphate for the same sorption sites on oxide surfaces will enhance the lability of soil P. In the Aurajoki field with distinct soil cracking, P w and P AAC were not affected by NT in the uppermost soil layer, but they increased in the deepest soil layer (20–35 cm) concomitantly with an increase in Al-bound P and organic C. However, the increases were not statistically significant. In both fields, soil acidification due to the repeated application of N fertilizers at a shallow soil depth as well as the accumulation of organic C lowered pH of the uppermost soil layer in NT compared to the deeper soil layers. The results indicated that even short-term NT can increase the labile P in clay soil. However, further studies are needed to assess the long-term changes in lability of surface soil P and, consequently, the possible need for readjustment of the fertilization level in NT.
suorakylvö", "2. However, the latter are rarely precisely described since studies often use a unique indicator of soil use intensity, showing a weak explanatory value of biotic pressures. Our aim was to develop a framework to identify crop management strategies based on (i) 14 indicators of farming practices collected in 203 fields from 2004 to 2016 through interviews with the 23 farmers managing the fields, and (ii) a discussion with the farmers to assess to what extent they are valid. Then, we assessed how much these strategies helped improving our understanding of 412 weed communities surveyed in their fields. Indicators of farming intensity (e.g. treatment frequency index) was converted into ratios by dividing with the mean value of all the fields cultivated with the same crop in the same year. We identified eight crop management strategies with cluster analysis within a 950-ha area exposed to the same production situation. They differed, in decreasing order of importance, by the diversity of crops, tillage intensity, pesticide and fertiliser uses. The interviews of the farmers validated their assignment to each strategy. The interviews revealed the reasons why farmers implement a single or various strategies in their fields (seven farmers practiced two or three strategies because of differences in soil types or history of fields). The outputs of the classification gave them additional information on how their farming system differed from those of their neighbours. Using crop management strategies improved the quality of the statistical models predicting weed richness, cumulated weed richness over the 2008–2013 period, weed abundance and the frequency of weeding failure. This framework is useful to identify crop management strategies and to share information with farmers in order to be used to redesign cropping systems toward a more environmentally friendly agriculture.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "2. A long-term (11-yr) experiment on a clay loam Orthic Humic Gleysol at Ridgetown, Ontario, Canada was used to evaluate the impact of fertilizer N applications (in-season zero N (−N) compared to (+N) 100 and 80 kg N ha-1 yr.-1 to corn (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), respectively) on soil attributes. The cropping systems consisted of continuous corn (CC), corn-soybean (Glycine max L.) (C-S) and corn-soybean-wheat (C-S-W) rotations using conventional moldboard plough and no-till systems. Soil was collected from the 0–120 cm profile in 5, 10, and 20 cm increments and analyzed for SOC and TN. The effect and interaction of N fertilization on soil attributes was highly dependent on crop rotation and tillage system. The gain in SOC and TN contents due to +N fertilizer was greatest (up to 31 and 57 % relative to the -N control, respectively) in the 0–20 cm depth with the C-S-W rotation, and lowest under CC, which showed no N fertilizer effect. However, differences in SOC and TN were not confined to the surface 20 cm, as N fertilizer treatments significantly influenced the contents at 20–60 and 60–120 cm in certain rotation and tillage systems; C-S-W was the most responsive to N fertilizer-induced SOC and TN gains. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of NT and MP practices on concomitant SOM and P distribution and sorption characteristics among water-stable aggregates and non-aggregated particles. The study was conducted in Quebec, Canada, as part of a long-term corn and soybean rotation experiment (established since 1992) on a clay loam soil of the St-Blaise series (Dark Grey Gleysol). Soil samples were collected in the fall of 2007 in the 0-5 cm layer from plots under NT and MP receiving 35 kg P ha -1 and 160 kg N ha -1 . Samples were separated into three water-stable aggregate-sized classes (macro, 2000-250 μm; meso, 250-180 μm; micro, 180- 53 μm) and (silt+clay)-sized particles (b53 μm) using wet-sieving. Macro aggregates made up 60.2 and 48.5% of total soil weight under NT and MP, respectively. In wet-sieved soils from NT plots, water-extractable P (Pw) concentration increased in the order (silt+clay)-sized particlesbmicro-bmeso-bmacro-aggregates; under MP, micro-, meso-, and macro-aggregate fractions had the same Pw concentration, while the (silt+clay)- sized particles showed the lowest Pw concentration. Annual rainfall in this region varies from 1200 to 2000 mm, although there is a long (∼5 month) dry season with almost no rain. This region is regarded by Brazilians as their agricultural frontier and there is a steady growth in the area dedicated to permanent cropping in the region, which today is estimated to occupy 14 Mha. Owing to the dearth of long-term experiments, the impact of continuous cropping on soil carbon stocks remains unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different tillage systems (zero till (ZT) and conventional tillage (CT)) on the change in soil carbon stocks over a 20-year period of the same crop sequence compared to that under a neighbouring area of native vegetation (NV). Only approximately 10 Mg ha−1 of soil carbon in the 0–100 cm depth interval was lost under continuous ZT. However, under CT systems losses were greater (up to 30 Mg C ha−1) when the mouldboard plough was used and/or tillage was performed twice a year. We did not have access to instrumentation to accurately assess soil charcoal but the C/N data and peroxide and dichromate oxidative techniques suggested that ∼40% of soil C was in this form. The 13C natural abundance of soil profiles indicated that residues of crops (maize) and the spontaneous annual fallow of Brachiaria spp. resulted in integration of significant C4 residues to a depth of at least 40 cm. It would appear that zero tillage, which is already widely adopted in the Cerrado region of Brazil, will have only a small negative long-term impact on soil C stocks, but ploughing, especially more than once a year, will lead to considerably larger soil C losses.
2. However, the accumulation of P in the uppermost soil layer and the increased leaching risk of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in surface runoff reduce the environmental benefits of NT. The objective of this study was to determine whether the concentration of DRP in percolates could be decreased by mixing surface soil (0–5 cm) and deeper soil layers (5–20 cm) and how this affects erosion. We also tested the impact of high ionic strength on erosion from undisturbed and disturbed soil columns. Soil samples were collected from conventionally tilled (CT) and non-tilled (for 5 years) plots from a clay field (Vertic Cambisol) at 0–2.5, 2.5–10 and 10–20 cm depths. Moreover, undisturbed and disturbed soil columns representing the same plots were saturated with water in the laboratory and allowed to drain. The physico-chemical properties of the percolates were analysed to unravel the impact of cultivation methods and disruption of the aggregate structure. To see the effect of high ionic strength on detachment of soil particles, the soil columns were leached with ammonium acetate solution. The low pH of NT surface soil had enhanced the sorption of P and easily-soluble P had accumulated in the uppermost soil layer. Surprisingly, this enrichment did not increase the DRP concentration in the percolates when water percolated through the 0–5 or 0–20 cm soil layers. Disruption of the aggregate structure increased the turbidity and concentrations of suspended solids and PP in the percolates. In the NT samples, this action increased the concentration of DRP relatively more than in the CT samples. When the disturbed soil columns were leached with a solution of high ionic strength, the turbidity of the eluates was almost as low as before the breakage. To prevent erosion and the leaching of PP and DRP, we have to ensure an even water infiltration by improving the soil structure and by avoiding the disruption of stabilized aggregates. There is a lack of data on the effects of the no-till management in the cool and humid climate and typical soil types of Northern Europe. We measured the fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) on conventionally ploughed agricultural soils and on respective soils that had been under no-till practice for 5–7 years. Ten chamber measurement investigations were carried out during a 10-month period on six pairs of tilled and no-till fields on clayey (Vertic Cambisols, three pairs), coarse (Eutric Regosols, two pairs), and organic (Dystric Histosols, one pair) soils located between latitudes 60° and 62° N. The results suggest that there is a risk of increased N2O emissions in the first years of no-till practice under small grain spring cereal cultivation in Northern European boreal climate. Carbon dioxide emissions measured as total ecosystem respiration were either unchanged, increased or decreased under no-till. Fluxes of CH4 were negligible and not affected by no-till practice. Increased interest in no-till, and minimum or reduced tillage, results from changes in the economic circumstances of crop production, the opportunity to increase the area of more profitable autumn-sown crops and increased concern about environmental damage associated with soil inversion by ploughing. Highly contrasting soil and climate types within and between these regions exert a strong influence on the success of no-till. While no-till may often result in crop yields which equal or exceed those obtained after ploughing, modest reductions in yield may be tolerated if production costs are lower than with ploughing. The relative costs of fuel and herbicides have changed appreciably in recent years making no-till more attractive commercially. While effective weed control is an essential aspect of no-till, current herbicide technology may not yet fully achieve this.In northern regions no-till usually allows earlier drilling of winter-sown crops but will give lower soil temperature and higher moisture content in spring, causing delayed drilling of spring-sown crops. No-till soils have greater bulk density and bearing capacity than ploughed soils with a pronounced vertical orientation of macroporosity allowing penetration of roots and water, especially in view of the increased population of deep-burrowing earthworms. Particular care must be taken with no-till to minimise soil damage at harvest and to ensure the even distribution of crop residues prior to drilling.Reduced erosion and runoff after adoption of no-till are widely observed and are of particular importance in southwestern Europe. No-till reduces losses of phosphorus in runoff and, in some cases, reduces the loss of nitrate through leaching. Emissions of greenhouse gases CO2 and N2O from no-till soils are highly variable and depend on complex interactions of soil properties. Emission of CO2 from fuel during machinery usage is always appreciably reduced with no-till. Increased soil organic carbon in surface layers of no-till soils is widely found but may not be associated with increased carbon sequestration throughout the profile. The evaluation of the relative carbon balance for no-till and ploughing depends upon complex inter-relationships between soil and climate factors which are as yet poorly understood. Adoption of no-till could be encouraged by government financial assistance in recognition of environmental benefits, although future restrictions on the use of herbicides may be a deterrent. Opportunities for further research on no-till are outlined.
[SDV.SA.AGRO] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Agronomy", "Zero tillage", "2. Zero hunger", "13. However, very little information is available on the relatively long-term effect of different crop rotations and soil tillage practices on crop yields and soil quality parameters. This study was conducted at the Normandin Research Farm of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Five rotation types [1: Canola–Barley–Barley–Pea (C–B–B–P); 2: Canola–Pea–Barley–Barley (C–P–B–B); 3: Canola–Barley–Pea–Barley (C–B–P–B); 4: Pea monoculture; and 5: Barley monoculture] and two soil tillage practices [1: Chisel plough (CP) and 2: Moldboard plough (MP)] were evaluated. Canola monoculture of was not included. The study began in 1999 on a former alfalfa field and ended in 2010 after three four-year rotation cycles. Barley monoculture decreased yields by 600 kg ha−1 in the last five years, whereas field pea monoculture decreased yields by about 1000 kg ha−1 in most years. Barley monoculture did not significantly reduce grain yields compared to C–B–B–P and C–P–B–B, highlighting the importance of alternate crops every year. Soil tillage (CP versus MP) did not significantly affect yields for all crops in most years; and when it did have an effect, it showed inconsistencies by either increasing or decreasing grain yields. Soil tillage also had insignificant impact regardless of the rotation type involved. Rotation type and soil tillage had insignificant effect on soil organic matter content, whereas CP increased nitrate and phosphorus content in the 0–20 cm soil layer. Rotation type had insignificant impact on soil physical properties, whereas CP improved soil water conductivity by 0.03 cm h−1 for C–B–B–P and barley monoculture. Compared to MP, CP improved soil macro-aggregate (2–6 mm) stability to water as well as aggregate mean weight diameter by about 15% for most of the rotations.
2. Furthermore, as climate mitigation strategies and incentives for carbon farming are being developed, accurate estimates of SOC stocks are essential to verify any management￢ﾀﾐinduced changes in SOC. Based on agricultural mineral soils in the Danish soil￢ﾀﾐmonitoring network, we analysed management effects on SOC stocks using data from the two most recent surveys (2009 and 2019). Between 2009 and 2019, the average increase in SOC stock was 1.2￢ﾀﾉMg C￢ﾀﾉha ￢ﾈﾒ1 for 0￢ﾀﾓ50￢ﾀﾉcm despite a loss of 1.2￢ﾀﾉMg￢ﾀﾉC￢ﾀﾉha ￢ﾈﾒ1 from the topsoil (0￢ﾀﾓ25￢ﾀﾉcm), stressing the importance of including deeper soil layers in soil￢ﾀﾐmonitoring networks. Comparing all four national surveys (1986, 1997, 2009, 2019), the mean SOC stock of mineral soils in Denmark appears stable. The change in SOC stock between 2009 and 2019 was analysed in detail in relation to management practices as reported by farmers. We found that the effects of single management factors were difficult to isolate from co￢ﾀﾐvarying factors including soil parameters and that the use of farm management data to explain changes in SOC stocks observed in soil￢ﾀﾐmonitoring networks appears limited. Uncertainty in SOC stock estimates also arises from low sampling frequency and statistical challenges related to regression to the mean. However, repeated stock measurements at decadal intervals still represent a benchmark for the overall development in regional and national SOC storage, as affected by actual farm management. </p
soil organic carbon", "2. A systematic review
Abstract Background
The loss of carbon (C) from agricultural soils has been, in part, attributed to tillage, a common practice providing a number of benefits to farmers. The promotion of less intensive tillage practices and no tillage (NT) (the absence of mechanical soil disturbance) aims to mitigate negative impacts on soil quality and to preserve soil organic carbon (SOC). Several reviews and meta-analyses have shown both beneficial and null effects on SOC due to no tillage relative to conventional tillage, hence there is a need for a comprehensive systematic review to answer the question: what is the impact of reduced tillage intensity on SOC?
                                Methods
We systematically reviewed relevant research in boreo-temperate regions using, as a basis, evidence identified within a recently completed systematic map on the impacts of farming on SOC. We performed an update of the original searches to include studies published since the map search. We screened all evidence for relevance according to predetermined inclusion criteria. Studies were appraised and subject to data extraction. Meta-analyses were performed to investigate the impact of reducing tillage [from high (HT) to intermediate intensity (IT), HT to NT, and from IT to NT] for SOC concentration and SOC stock in the upper soil and at lower depths.
                                Results
A total of 351 studies were included in the systematic review: 18% from an update of research published in the 2ￂﾠyears since the systematic map. SOC concentration was significantly higher in NT relative to both IT [1.18ￂﾠg/kgￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ0.34 (SE)] and HT [2.09ￂﾠg/kgￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ0.34 (SE)] in the upper soil layer (0￢ﾀﾓ15ￂﾠcm). IT was also found to be significant higher [1.30ￂﾠg/kgￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ0.22 (SE)] in SOC concentration than HT for the upper soil layer (0￢ﾀﾓ15ￂﾠcm). At lower depths, only IT SOC compared with HT at 15￢ﾀﾓ30ￂﾠcm showed a significant difference; being 0.89ￂﾠg/kg [ￂﾱￂﾠ0.20 (SE)] lower in intermediate intensity tillage. For stock data NT had significantly higher SOC stocks down to 30ￂﾠcm than either HT [4.61ￂﾠMg/haￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ1.95 (SE)] or IT [3.85ￂﾠMg/haￂﾠￂﾱￂﾠ1.64 (SE)]. No other comparisons were significant.
                                Conclusions
The transition of tilled croplands to NT and conservation tillage has been credited with substantial potential to mitigate climate change via C storage. Based on our results, C stock increase under NT compared to HT was in the upper soil (0￢ﾀﾓ30ￂﾠcm) around 4.6ￂﾠMg/ha (0.78￢ﾀﾓ8.43ￂﾠMg/ha, 95% CI) over ￢ﾉﾥ 10ￂﾠyears, while no effect was detected in the full soil profile. The results support those from several previous studies and reviews that NT and IT increase SOC in the topsoil. Higher SOC stocks or concentrations in the upper soil not only promote a more productive soil with higher biological activity but also provide resilience to extreme weather conditions. The effect of tillage practices on total SOC stocks will be further evaluated in a forthcoming project accounting for soil bulk densities and crop yields. Our findings can hopefully be used to guide policies for sustainable management of agricultural soils.

Carbon sequestration", "2. Data of two growing cycles in the years 2007-2010 and 2011-2014 were evaluated. Tillage technique was decisive for changes in soil characteristics and crop yields. Bulk density, organic carbon (Corg) and microbial biomass C (Cmic) were more equilibrated throughout all tested soil layers (0-0.1; 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.3 m) in conventional tillage (CT). In reduced tillage (RT) and no-tillage (NT) treatments significant accumulation of Corg and increase of Cmic in the surface layer were found, compared to CT. No significant differences in Corg and Cmic between two growing cycles were determined; however, mostly higher values were obtained in the top layer of NT during the second growing period. Higher bulk density under conservation tillage techniques did not negatively affect soil characteristics and should be taken in consideration for data evaluation as it can alter interpretation of their changes in the soil profile. Crop yields were comparable in CT and RT. Yield decrease in NT was mostly observed for winter wheat and pea. Furthermore, the correlation between soil indexes and crop yield under the best fertilization mode through the addition of the natural material of woody peat instead of lengthy cultivation of the plough layer to rapidly construct a high-quality plough layer and solve the practical problem that the natural endowment of newly reclaimed cultivated land is far less than the occupied high-quality cultivated land was explored. The land remediation project of Fuping County, Hebei Province, was taken as the experimental area, and the five most representative and effective datasets were selected and studied. The results demonstrated that the addition of woody peat and rotten straw could reduce soil particle size and bulk density and alleviate soil viscosity and acidification. An increase in soil organic matter, soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium and a decrease in the heavy metal content were also observed. The results indicated that the application of woody peat achieved the expected effect of the rapid construction of a high-quality plough layer. The best mode of fertilization was A2, which provided a good reference for the rapid construction of a high-quality plough layer in the future. The analysis of the correlation between soil indexes and crop yield illustrated that the organic matter content, soil available nutrients, and crop yield had a significant positive correlation; the organic matter content and soil available nutrients showed the same tendency, which suggests that soil organic matter content and soil fertility level are closely related and that soil fertility plays a decisive role in crop yield under the same external conditions. Woody peat exerted an eminent influence on the organic matter content and soil available nutrients to determine the change in crop yield, which provides a reliable basis for future research on land improvement projects to increase crop yield.

2. L., Congreves, K. A., Hayes, A., Verhallen, A. and Hooker, D. C. 2014. Long-term tillage and crop rotation effects on soil quality, organic carbon, and total nitrogen. Can. J. Soil Sci. 94: 303￢ﾀﾓ315. Long-term studies allow for quantification of the effects of crop production practices, such as tillage and crop rotation, on soil quality and soil C and N stores. In two experiments at Ridgetown, ON, we evaluated the long-term (11 and 15 yr) effect of tillage system and crop rotation on soil quality via the Cornell Soil Health Assessment (CSHA) at 0￢ﾀﾓ15 cm and soil organic C (SOC) and total N at 5-, 10-, and 20-cm increments to 120 cm depth. The CSHA soil quality score and SOC and total N were higher with no-till (NT) than fall moldboard plough with spring cultivation (conventional tillage, CT) and rotations with winter wheat [soybean￢ﾀﾓwinter wheat (S-W) and soybean￢ﾀﾓwinter wheat￢ﾀﾓcorn (S-W-C)] compared with rotations without winter wheat. In both long-term trials, NT had ca. 21 Mg ha￢ﾈﾒ1more or 14% higher SOC than CT in the 0- to 100-cm soil profile, a trend which contrasts previous research in eastern Canada. Thus, the two long-term trial results at Ridgetown suggest that to improve soil quality and storage of C and N, growers on clay loam soil in southwestern Ontario should consider adopting NT production practices and including winter wheat in the rotation.

2. Especially under wet soil conditions, when soil is susceptible to compaction, heavy wheel load field traffic can lead to harmful soil compaction. This data set contains soil data from a wheeling experiment with an agricultural vehicle (2-axle combine harvester with bunker; total weight: 17 t). The experiment was conducted in 2016 on an agricultural test field in Adenstedt (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony, Germany) during the harvest campaign. The soil type is Stagnic Luvisol derived from Loess and was conventionally tilled with a plough up to a depth of 28 cm. The cultivated crop was winter wheat. For the wheeling experiment, a combine harvester with full bunker volume passed defined plots in the field. In the inner field area, the number of wheel passes were 2 and in the headlands the number of wheel passes were 6. The sampling sites were both located in the inner field area and in the headlands. To investigate changes in soil physical parameters, soil structure, and soil functions caused by combine harvester driving, undisturbed soil cores (100 cm³) were taken before (unwheeled) and after wheeling (wheeled). The unwheeled soil samples were taken in 22, 35, and 50 depth and the wheeled soil samples in 20, 35, and 50 cm depth. In the inner field area, two soil pits were sampled per wheeling variant and in the headlands, one soil pit was sampled per wheeling variant. Additionally, the soil biopores were counted in every one of the three soil depths. A total of 30 undisturbed soil samples were taken per each soil pit, 10 per each soil depth.5 of the 10 undisturbed sampling rings were used to investigate soil water retention and the other 5 for saturated hydraulic conductivity. The determination of pF values was conducted in the soil laboratory using sand and clay boxes as well as pressure pots according to DIN ISO 11274. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was analyzed using a soil water permeameter (open system) according to ISO / FDIS 17312. The soil parameters total pore volume, air capacity, field capacity, usable field capacity, permanent wilting point, dry bulk density, and current water content during soil sampling were derived from the soil laboratory results.

Research domain: Soil Sciences
["Soil", "Top soil", "Subsoil", "soil compaction", "Soil pore system", "Soil porosity", "Soil macropores", "Field capacity", "Wilting point", "Hydraulic conductivity", "agriculture", "Vehicles", "Harvesters", "Tillage", "Conservation tillage", "Conventional tillage", "Ploughing", "management", "Management techniques", "On-farm research", "Field experimentation", "Traffic", "Soil sampling", "Bodenfunktion", "Bodenstruktur", "Physikalische Veränderung", "Bodenwasser", "Bodenschutz", "Bodenuntersuchung", "Probenahme", "Boden", "opendata", "Soil physical parameters", "Soil density", "Dry bulk density", "Soil water content", "Soil deformation", "Soil hydraulic properties", "Soil water retention", "Air capaciy", "Plant available water", "Agricultural machineries", "Agricultural management", "Soil management", "Field experiment", "Wheeling experiment", "Field traffic", "Soil conserving traffic
["author
["Bundesallee 47

["author
["Bundesallee 47

["other
[null

["projectLeader
["Bundesallee 47

["projectManager
["Bundesallee 47

["dataCurator
["Bundesallee 47
BonaRes Data Centre
Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF)
Research Platform 'Data Analysis & Simulation' - In contrast to mineral fertilizer, humus acts as long-term source of nutrients and is a basis element of soil fertility. The international fertilization trial (IOSDV) at the research facility Rinkenbergerhof at the LUFA Speyer (Germany) was set up in the year 1984 and planted with a repeating crop rotation: winter wheat, winter barley, and sugar beet. This data set comprises only the soil management variant “ploughing”. Other treatment factors were: (1) no organic amendment, farmyard (horse) manure treatment every three years to sugar beet fields, and crop residues + catch crop treatment; (2) without and with mineral N fertilization. More experimental details are available in German from the LUFA Speyer (Germany): VDLUFA, 121. VDLUFA-Kongress, Kongressband, Teil 2, Beiträge aus den öffentlichen Sitzungen der Fachrichtung Pflanzen- und Tierproduktion am 16. September 2009, Karlsruhe, Schriftenreihe Bd. 65/2009, ISBN 978-3-941273-07-8 (German): https://www.vdlufa.de/kongress2009/KB2009Teil2.pdf. Parameters of the data set were determined on basis of standardized VDLUFA and DIN guidelines by the LUFA Speyer (Germany). The data set contains data of 72 samples, which were sampled during four sampling seasons with winter barley and sugar beet as crop plant and contained 3 field replicates of 6 treatment combinations. The bacterial bulk soil community structure of all samples was characterised by amplicon sequencing of the V1-V2 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using primers 27F (5′-AGAGTTTGATCMTGGC-3′) and 357R (5'-CTGCTGCCTYCCGTA-3'). Results show that the bacterial community in the long term is mainly altered by mineral fertilization and, on a lower level by horse manure. The bacterial class Bacilli was an evident positive responder to manure application. However, both manure and crop residues are valueable amendments for farmland, since both mitigate the negative effects of mineral fertilizer on the connectivity of bacterial interaction networks. Especially under wet soil conditions, when soil is susceptible to compaction, heavy wheel load field traffic can lead to harmful soil compaction. This data set contains soil data from a wheeling experiment with agricultural vehicles from the silage maize harvest chain (maize chopper (total weight: 20 t), tractor with mulcher (total weight: 75 t), and tractor with silage trailer (total weight: 32 t)). The experiment was conducted in 2016 on an agricultural test field in Adenstedt (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony, Germany). The soil type is Stagnic Luvisol derived from Loess and was tilled with a cultivator up to a depth of 25 cm (reduced tillage). For the wheeling experiment, the harvest chain vehicles passed defined plots in the inner field area one after another (8 wheel passes). Maximum soil pressure und plastic soil deformation evoked by vehicle passing was measured simultaneously with a multi-channel device consisting of Bolling probes (Bolling, 1987) and hydrostatic measuring hoses (Nolting et al., 2006). Maximum soil pressure and plastic soil deformation was measured in 20, 35, and 50 cm depth directly below the center of the tires. To investigate changes in soil physical parameters, soil structure, and soil functions caused by harvest chain vehicles driving, undisturbed soil cores (100 cm³) were taken before (unwheeled) and after wheeling (wheeled). The sampling sites were located in the inner field area. Two soil pits were sampled per wheeling variant. A total of 30 undisturbed soil samples were taken per each soil pit, 10 per each soil depth (20, 35, 50 cm). The soil biopores were counted in every one of the three soil depths. 5 of the 10 undisturbed sampling rings were used to investigate soil water retention and the other 5 for saturated hydraulic conductivity.

["Soil", "Top soil", "Subsoil", "soil compaction", "Soil pore system", "Soil porosity", "Soil macropores", "Field capacity", "Wilting point", "Hydraulic conductivity", "agriculture", "Vehicles", "Harvesters", "Tillage", "Conservation tillage", "Conventional tillage", "Ploughing", "management", "Management techniques", "On-farm research", "Field experimentation", "Traffic", "Soil sampling", "Bodenfunktion", "Bodenstruktur", "Physikalische Veränderung", "Bodenwasser", "Bodenschutz", "Bodenuntersuchung", "Probenahme", "opendata", "Boden
["author
["Bundesallee 47

["author
["Bundesallee 47

["other
[null

["projectLeader
["Bundesallee 47

["projectManager
["Bundesallee 47

["dataCurator
["Bundesallee 47
BonaRes Data Centre
Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF)
Research Platform 'Data Analysis & Simulation' - Especially under wet soil conditions, when soil is susceptible to compaction, heavy wheel load field traffic can lead to harmful soil compaction. This data set contains soil data from a wheeling experiment with agricultural vehicles from the silage maize harvest chain (maize chopper (total weight: ~20 t), tractor with mulcher (total weight: ~12 t), and tractor with silage trailer (total weight: ~32 t)). The experiment was conducted in 2017 on an agricultural test field in Adenstedt (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony, Germany).
["Soil", "tillage", "ploughing depth", "soil mechanical properties", "soil chemicophysical properties", "soil hydraulic properties", "opendata", "Reduced tillage", "Boden
["author
[null

["projectLeader
[null
BonaRes Data Center
Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF)
Research Platform 'Data Analysis & Simulation' - The experimental site was founded in 1936 by Prof. Kurt Opitz is located about 30 kilometres south of Berlin. This site represents typical farming conditions of the young moraine landscapes of the Weichselian glaciation of Northeast Germany. According to the German classification of soil-climate spaces, the experimental site is located in the area of “dry-warm diluvial soils of East German lowlands” (diluvial: soils developed in glacial sediments). Within this area, soil values of the “German soil taxation framework” of less than 30 out of a maximum 100 are common.
Thyrow is located at approximately 42 m above sea level on the southern edge of the Teltow, a Weichselian ground moraine plateau. The slope is predominantly flat at 2 %. The dominant soil type for this is location is a Retisol developed in a sand over a deep loam. As typical for ground moraines the boundaries between the sandy and loamy layer vary intensely between 60 cm to 200 cm. This causes small-scale differences in water and nutrient resources especially of the subsoil. The plant available water capacity of the soil in the effective root zone (60 – 80 cm deep) fluctuates between 50 to 150 mm. These soils are at high risk of nutrient leaching, acidification and surface siltation because of the low clay and humus content of the topsoil.
Due to the soil’s low water-holding capacity, the crop yields at the Thyrow Field Station show great fluctuations dependent on weather conditions. The climatic water balance during the growing period is negative and the overall low water availability at this location limits the crop yields. Mean annual temperature for the period 1991-2020 was measured to be 9.7°C, with annual precipitation 533 mm. Annual crop yields are particularly negatively affected by low precipitation from April to June.
The two areas that are managed by the research station are separated by the Thyrower Dorfstraße (Landesstraße 795). The main experimental area, where the long-term experiments are conducted, is located on the farm (Hof) side, along with two other trials for the implementation of field experiments. Northwest of the Landesstraße there is another experimental area (Schlag 3), where other experiments are conducted to answer questions about differing agricultural systems, soil management, cultivar suitability, and fertilization.

Soil classes according to German Soil Taxation: S4D, Sl5D, Sl4D
Soil textural class: silty sand
Mean annual temperature: 9.7°C (1991-2020) / 9.2 °C (1981-2010) / 8.9° C (1971-2000)
Mean annual precipitation: 533 mm (1991-2020) / 510 mm (1981-2010) / 495 mm (1971-2000)
The geodata of the entire premises (Thyrower Hof and Schlag 3)
