For a one year period, we measured soil fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), related soil parameters (temperature, water-filled pore space, mineral nitrogen content, N mineralization potential) and litterfall in two highly fertilized (250 kg N ha−1 year−1) coffee cultivation: a monoculture (CM) and a culture shaded by the N2 fixing legume species Inga densiflora (CIn). Nitrogen fertilizer addition significantly influenced N2O emissions with 84% of the annual N2O emitted during the post fertilization periods, and temporarily increased soil respiration and decreased CH4 uptakes. The higher annual N2O emissions from the shaded plantation (5.8 ± 0.3 kg N ha−1 year−1) when compared to that from the monoculture (4.3 ± 0.1 kg N ha−1 year−1) was related to the higher N input through litterfall (246 ± 16 kg N ha−1 year−1) and higher potential soil N mineralization rate (3.7 ± 0.2 mg N kg−1 d.w. d−1) in the shaded cultivation when compared to the monoculture (153 ± 6.8 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 2.2 ± 0.2 mg N kg−1 d.w. d−1). This confirms that the presence of N2 fixing shade trees can increase N2O emissions. Annual CO2 and CH4 fluxes of both systems were similar (8.4 ± 2.6 and 7.5 ± 2.3 t C-CO2 ha−1 year−1, −1.1 ± 1.5 and 3.3 ± 1.1 kg C-CH4 ha−1 year−1, respectively in the CIn and CM plantations) but, unexpectedly increased during the dry season.
OXYDE NITREUX", "570", "571", "[SDV.BIO]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Biotechnology", "forest management", "livelihoods", "01 natural sciences", "logging", "METHANE", "policies", "MINERALIZATION", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "tropical forests", "CH4", "N2O", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. Model￢ﾀﾐbased estimates of the emissions from cropland expansion have been used to assess the environmental impacts of biofuel policies. And integrated assessment models have estimated the potential for biofuels to contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement over the coming century. All of these studies feature, explicitly or implicitly, competition between biofuel feed stocks and other land uses. However, the economic mechanisms governing this competition, as well as the contribution of biofuels to global land use change, have not received the close scrutiny that they deserve. The purpose of this article is to offer a deeper look at these factors. We begin with a comparative static analysis which assesses the impact of exogenously specified forecasts of biofuel expansion over the period: 2006￢ﾀﾓ2035. Global land use change is decomposed according to the three key margins of economic response: extensive supply, intensive supply, and demand. Under the International Energy Agency's ￢ﾀﾜNew Policies￢ﾀﾝ scenario, biofuels account for nearly one￢ﾀﾐfifth of global land use change over the 2006￢ﾀﾓ2035 period. The article also offers a comparative dynamic analysis which determines the optimal path for first and second generation biofuels over the course of the entire 21st century. In the absence of GHG regulation, the welfare￢ﾀﾐmaximizing path for global land use, in the face of 3% annual growth in oil prices, allocates 225 Mha to biofuel feed stocks by 2100, with the associated biofuels accounting for about 30% of global liquid fuel consumption. This area expansion is somewhat diminished by expected climate change impacts on agriculture, while it is significantly increased by an aggressive GHG emissions target and by advances in conversion efficiency of second generation biofuels.

2. The social and environmental cost of soil degradation is estimated at EUR 50 billion per year in Europe alone, demonstrating the importance of soil in sustaining livelihoods, supporting biodiversity, and regulating the Earth's climate.1 To date, efforts to place a monetary value on the ecosystem services provided by healthy soil have been rare.2 It is crucial to reconsider the concept of healthy soil and to make the business community, politicians and public administration see soil as an investment opportunity for high quality services that are environmentally and resource friendly.Regulatory policies, legislative frameworks, financial instruments, and economic models are the key tools to promote and facilitate public and private investment in healthy soil. In particular, the review of the policy and legislative framework at different scales of government offers an opportunity to understand the mechanisms to encourage the maintenance and further diffusion of techniques that improve soil health. A greater understanding of the actual effects of policies and incentives on soil health will improve understanding of the effectiveness of policies and incentives to maintain and restore soil health and will also serve as a basis for developing and improving the implementation of soil health policies and certification schemes. The InBestSoil project aims to co-create a framework for investments in soil health preservation and restoration by developing a system for the economic valuation of the ecosystem services provided by healthy soil and the impacts of soil interventions, and its incorporation into business models and incentives. By analyzing policy requirements, barriers and enabling factors, as well as economic incentive programs aiming at sustainable soil management and preservation/restoration of soil health, the existing policies and economic incentives for soil health were reviewed through horizontal mapping and semi-structured interview mapping. Protecting such valuable resource require knowledge on soil status through monitoring systems. In Europe, different types of monitoring networks currently exist in parallel. Many EU Member states (MS) developed their own national soil information monitoring system (N-SIMS), some being in place for decades. In parallel in 2009, the European Commission extended the periodic Land Use/Land Cover Area Frame Survey (LUCAS) led by EUROSTAT to sample and analyse the main properties of topsoil in EU in order to develop a homogeneous dataset for EU.Both sources of information are needed to support European policies on soil health evaluation. However, a question remains whether the assessment obtained by using soil properties from both monitoring programs (N-SIMS and LUCAS Soil) are comparable, and what could be the limitations of using either one dataset or the other.Conducted in the context of European Joint Programme (EJP) SOIL, this study shows the results of a comparison between N-SIMS and LUCAS Soil programs among 12 different EU member states including BE, DE, DK, EE, ES, FR, DE, HU, IT, NL, PL, SE and SK. The comparison was done on: (i) the sampling strategies including site densities, land cover and soil type distribution; (ii) the statistical distribution of three soil properties (organic carbon, pH and clay content); (iii) two potential indicators of soil quality (i.e. OC/Clay ratio and pH classes). The results underlined substantial differences in soil properties statistical distributions between N-SIMS and LUCAS Soil in many member states, particularly for woodland and grassland soils, affecting the evaluation of soil health using indicators. Such differences might be explained by both the monitoring strategy and sampling or analytical protocols exposing the potential effect of data source on European and national policies. The results demonstrate the need to work towards data harmonization and in the light of the Soil Monitoring Law, to carefully design the future of soil monitoring in Europe taking into account both LUCAS Soil and N-SIMS considering the significant impact of the monitoring strategies and protocols on soil health indicators.
Europe", "Soil health", "Science", "Q", "Soil monitoring", "Soil monitoring ; Soil health ; Policies ; Europe ; LUCAS Soil", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "[SDV.SA.SDS] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "Policies", "630", "LUCAS Soil
https://doi.org/10261/368118"},

["Sikkerhetspolitikk / Security policies", "Europa / Europe
["creator
https://doi.org/11250/2420238
Open AccessI avhandlingen analyseras vilken kunskap och diskurser som vägleder socialtjänstens arbete med mäns våld mot kvinnor.
