Salicornia europaea was cultivated in hydroponic systems under varying salt concentrations (0, 10, 20, and 30 g/L NaCl), while S. ramosissima was grown in greenhouse farming with aquaculture effluent irrigation. The biomethane potential of the two halophyte feedstocks was determined through batch experiments, and correlations to the plant biochemical composition were investigated. Ash and mineral content of S. europaea was correlated to the increasing salt concentration used for plant cultivation in hydroponic systems. No indication of inhibition of the anaerobic digestion process was detected for sodium concentrations of up to 2400 mg/L in the anaerobic batch-test assays. The highest biomethane yield of S. europaea of 250 mL CH4/gVS was obtained when grown under 20 g/L NaCl and up to 300 mL CH4/gVS for S. ramosissima. By concentrating the dry matter content, the biomethane yield per ton of feedstock could be increased from 24 m3 CH4/t of the fresh halophyte plant to 74 m3 CH4/t by fractionation into a pulp fraction and to 149 m3 CH4/t by drying of the plant at room temperature for 1 week.

anaerobic digestion", "TP500-660", "Dewey Decimal Classification::500 | Naturwissenschaften::570 | Biowissenschaften", " Biologie", "biodegradability", "Fermentation industries. Currently, no quantitative comparison of canopy extraction methods exists in the context of precision irrigation. The accuracies of four canopy extraction methods were compared, and the effect on water status estimation was explored for these methods: 2-pixel erosion (2PE) where non-canopy pixels were removed by thresholding and morphological erosion; edge detection (ED) where edges were identified and morphologically dilated; vegetation segmentation (VS) using temperature histogram analysis and spatial watershed segmentation; and RGB binary masking (RGB-BM) where a binary canopy layer was statistically extracted from an RGB image for thermal image masking. The field experiments occurred in a four-hectare commercial peach orchard during the primary fruit growth stage (III). The relationship between stem water potential (SWP) and crop water stress index (CWSI) was established in 2018. During 2019, a large dataset of ten thermal infrared and two RGB images was acquired. The canopy extraction methods had different accuracies: on 12 August, the overall accuracy was 83% for the 2PE method, 77% for the ED method, 84% for the VS method, and 90% for the RGB-BM method. Despite the high accuracy of the RGB-BM method, canopy edges and between-row weeds were misidentified as canopy. Canopy temperature and CWSI were calculated using the average of 100% of canopy pixels (CWSI_T100%) and the average of the coolest 33% of canopy pixels (CWSI_T33%). The CWSI_T33% dataset produced similar SWP–CWSI models irrespective of the canopy extraction method used, while the CWSI_T100% yielded different and inferior models. The results highlighted the following: (1) The contribution of the RGB images is not significant for canopy extraction. Canopy pixels can be extracted with high accuracy and reliability solely with thermal images. (2) The T33% approach to canopy temperature calculation is more robust and superior to the simple mean of all canopy pixels. These noteworthy findings are a step forward in implementing thermal imagery in precision irrigation management.

stem water potential", "Science", "Q", "peach orchard", "15. We hypothesized that zero tillage (ZT) with residue retention provides a means of sustainably intensifying the RW system through lower production costs and higher economic profitability, whilst at the same time minimizing soil and environmental trade-offs. To test this hypothesis, we evaluated six combinations of tillage, residue management and green gram integration in RW rotation in northwest Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India. Treatments included in the study were: rice and wheat under conventional tillage (CT) with and without green gram (CTR-CTW, CTR-CTW+GG), both crops under zero-tillage (ZT) with and without green gram (ZTR-ZTW-R, ZTR-ZTW-R+GG) and both crops under ZT plus residues with and without green gram (ZTR-ZTW+R, ZTR-ZTW+R+GG). Based on two consecutive years of data, the net return from the RW system was significantly higher in the ZT than CT systems. Methane emissions were only observed under flooded conditions in CT rice plots; otherwise, emissions were negligible in all other treatment combinations. N2O emissions were dictated by N fertilizer application with no other treatment effects. Overall, ZT with residue retention resulted in the lowest global warming potential (GWP) ranging from ￢ﾈﾒ3301 to ￢ﾈﾒ823 kg CO2-eq ha￢ﾈﾒ1 year￢ﾈﾒ1 compared to 4113 to 7917 kg CO2-eq ha￢ﾈﾒ1 year￢ﾈﾒ1 in other treatments. Operational inputs (tillage, planting, and irrigation) and soil C sequestration had significant effects on total GWP. The water footprint of RW production system was about 29% less in CA-based system compared to CT-based systems. Our study concludes that ZTR-ZTW+R and ZTR-ZTW+R+GG in RW systems of northwestern IGP have the potential to be agronomically productive, economically viable with benefits also for the environment in terms of soil health and GHG emissions.

2. In the last 100 years, 9 earthquakes with intensity higher than VI (EMS) have been recorded. At the investigated area, a top layer up to 5 m thick, consisting of recent deposit of very loose silts and sands (ML, SM, SP), covers the medium dense to dense Quaternary gravel, beneath which there are over-consolidated, uncemented Miocene silts and marls. The top layer could be prone to liquefaction, as reported for the close surroundings of Brežice, where the liquefaction phenomenon was observed during the Zagreb earthquake in 1880 and during the Kupa Valley earthquake in 1909. The paper presents the results of laboratory index tests, cyclic simple shear tests and field investigations (SPT, CPT, (S)DMT, vs measurements), which were carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of the top layer at the location of the Brežice Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP). All results show that the top layer is prone to liquefaction for an earthquake with a 475 year return period. In the present study, sampling was conducted from May to November 2011 in Henan province, a typical agricultural region of central China, to study the effects of soil properties and anthropogenic factors on SOC variability in cropland. Physicochemical properties of soil samples were analyzed, which were collected at 280 sites from the surface layer (at a depth of 0–20 cm), and related data about the sampling sites were also collected from the Second State Soil Survey of China (SSSSC), conducted in 1981. The main results were as follows: 1) Increasing trends in soil organic carbon density (SOCD) and soil organic carbon pool (SOCP) were obvious from 1981 to 2011, and we conclude that cropland presents great carbon sequestration potential for the future. Carbon pool ability varied with soil properties: the order of fixed carbon amount in different soil types was found to be Inceptisols > Luvisols > Semi-hydromorphic soil > Anthrosols, and the average SOCP increased significantly from 1981 to 2011. 2) Soil bulk density, pH and returning straw are the key influence factors for SOCD in the past 30 years. 3) Although random factors (returning straw) only explain 29.1% of SOCD variability, the factor should be paid more attention, because application of returning strawwas the most dominant anthropogenic factors, which can be used to improve cropland productivity and carbon sink capacity within a short period if they are properly managed in the future.
2. Cigarette packs have been used as a marketing tool to target specific groups and priority populations. Research has shown that sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults are substantially more likely to use tobacco products than their straight and cisgender counterparts. However, research to inform the FDA’s regulatory decisions regarding cigarette packs targeting priority populations is nascent. To fill this gap, we conducted an online experiment in 2018, randomizing U.S. adults who reported current smoking ( N = 954, 52% were SGM) to view one of three cigarette packs. A graphic designer developed “Glacier” branded packs with three levels of SGM imagery: (1) no targeting, (2) subtle targeting, and (3) a rainbow “pride edition.” Participants viewed and rated the pack using cognitive, affective, and behavioral measures informed by theory. We used a linear model framework to compare the two SGM-targeted packs with the not targeted version and tested interactions between pack and SGM identity for the dependent variables. We stratified results by SGM status. SGM status was a significant moderator of the relationship between the pack and ratings of appeal, positive affect, feeling shocked, and intent to try with a coupon. Findings from this study revealed that packs designed for SGM populations can disproportionately change cognitive, affective, and behavioral intention responses for SGM smokers. Products entering the market should be assessed by FDA for the appeal of their packs to vulnerable populations.

Adult", "Male", "Marketing", "Adolescent", "Vaping", "Tobacco Products", "Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems", "Risk Assessment", "Transgender Persons", "United States", "3. As a result, area that is highly suitable for agriculture according to the prevailing local biophysical conditions but is not under cultivation today has a high natural potential for expansion. Policy regulations can further restrict the availability of land for expansion by designating protected areas, although they may be suitable for agriculture. Conversely, by applying e.g. irrigation practices, land can be brought under cultivation, although it may naturally not be suitable. Here, we investigate the potentials for agricultural expansion for near future climate scenario conditions to identify the suitability of non-cropland areas for expansion according to their local natural conditions. We determine the available energy, water and nutrient supply for agricultural suitability from climate, soil and topography data, by using a fuzzy logic approach according to Zabel et al. (2014). It considers the 16 globally most important staple and energy crops. These are: barley, cassava, groundnut, maize, millet, oil palm, potato, rapeseed, rice, rye, sorghum, soy, sugarcane, sunflower, summer wheat, winter wheat. The parameterization of the membership functions that describe each of the crops’ specific natural requirements is taken from Sys et al. (1993). The considered natural conditions are: climate (temperature, precipitation, solar radiation), soil properties (texture, proportion of coarse fragments and gypsum, base saturation, pH content, organic carbon content, salinity, sodicity), and topography (elevation, slope). As a result of the fuzzy logic approach, values in a range between 0 and 1 describe the suitability of a crop for each of the prevailing natural conditions at a certain location. The smallest suitability value over all parameters finally determines the suitability of a crop. The daily climate data is provided by simulation results from the global climate model ECHAM5 (Jungclaus et al. 2006) for near future (2011-2040) SRES A1B climate scenario conditions. Soil data is taken from the Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) (FAO et al. 2012), and topography data is applied from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) (Farr et al. 2007). In order to gather a general crop suitability, which does not refer to one specific crop, the most suitable crop with the highest suitability value is chosen at each pixel. In addition the natural biophysical conditions, we consider today’s irrigated areas according to (Siebert et al. 2013). We assume that irrigated areas globally remain constant until 2040, since adequate data on the development of irrigated areas do not exist, although it is likely that freshwater availability for irrigation could be limited in some regions, while in other regions surplus water supply could be used to expand irrigation practices (Elliott et al. 2014). However, it is difficult to project where irrigation practices will evolve, since it is driven by economic investment costs that are required to establish irrigation infrastructure. In principle, all agriculturally suitable land that is not used as cropland today has the natural potential to be converted into cropland. We assume that only urban and built-up areas are not available for conversion, although more than 80% of global urban areas are agriculturally suitable (Avellan et al. 2012). However, it seems unlikely that urban areas will be cleared at the large scale due to high investment costs, growing cities and growing demand for settlements. Concepts of urban and vertical farming usually are discussed under the aspects of cultivating fresh vegetables and salads for urban population. They are not designed to extensively grow staple crops such as wheat or maize for feeding the world in the near future. Urban farming would require one third of the total global urban area to meet only the global vegetable consumption of urban dwellers (Martellozzo et al. 2015). Thus, urban agriculture cannot substantially contribute to global agricultural production of staple crops. Protected areas or dense forested areas are not excluded from the calculation, in order not to lose any information in the further combination with the biodiversity patterns (see chapter 2.3). We use data on current cropland distribution by Ramankutty et al. (2008) and urban and built-up area according to the ESA-CCI land use/cover dataset (ESA 2014). From this data, we calculate the ‘natural expansion potential index’ (Iexp) that expresses the natural potential for an area to be converted into cropland as follows: Iexp = S * Aav The index is determined by the quality of agricultural suitability (S) (values between 0 and 1) multiplied with the amount of available area (Aav) for conversion (in percentage of pixel area). The available area includes all suitable area that is not cultivated today, and not classified as urban or artificial area. The index ranges between 0 and 100 and indicates where the conditions for cropland expansion are more or less favorable, when taking only natural conditions into account, disregarding socio-economic factors, policies and regulations that drive or inhibit cropland expansion. The index is a helpful indicator for identifying areas where cropland expansion could take place in the near future. Further information Detailled information are available in the following publication: Delzeit, R., F. One pool of carbon considered particularly stable across climate zones and soil types is formed when dissolved organic carbon sorbs to minerals. We quantified, for the first time, the potential of mineral soils to sorb additional dissolved organic carbon (DOC) for six soil orders. We compiled 402 laboratory sorption experiments to estimate the additional DOC sorption potential, that is the potential of excess DOC sorption in addition to the existing background level already sorbed in each soil sample. We estimated this potential using gridded climate and soil geochemical variables within a machine learning model. We find that mid- and low-latitude soils and subsoils have a greater capacity to store DOC by sorption compared to high-latitude soils and topsoils. The global additional DOC sorption potential for six soil orders is estimated to be 107 $$ pm$$ ￂﾱ 13 Pg C to 1ￂﾠm depth. This study assessed the spatial variations of yield gaps caused by lateral flows from high to low points, for rainfed wheat grown in Cￃﾳrdoba, Spain, over six consecutive seasons (2016￢ﾀﾓ2021). The economic implications associated with multiple scenarios of VRA adoption were explored through a case study and recommendations were proposed. Both farm size (i.e., annual sown area) and topographic structure impacted the dynamics of investment returns. Under current policy-price conditions, VRA adoption would have an economic advantage in farms similar to that of the case study with an annual sown area greater than 567ￂﾠhaￂﾠyear￢ﾈﾒ1. Nevertheless, current trends in energy prices, transportation costs and impacts on both cereal prices and fertilizers costs enhance the viability of VRA adoption for a wider population of farm types. The profitability of adopting VRA improves under such scenarios and, in the absence of additional policy support, the minimum area for adoption of VRA decreases to a range of 68￢ﾀﾓ177ￂﾠhaￂﾠyear￢ﾈﾒ1. The combination of price increases with the introduction of an additional subsidy on crop area could substantially lower the adoption threshold down to 46ￂﾠhaￂﾠyear￢ﾈﾒ1, making VRA technology economically viable for a much wider population of farmers.</p
2. Here, we developed a framework to compare the potential of two spectral transformations (i.e., raw reflectance and continuum removal [CR]), three optimization strategies (i.e., full-spectrum, Boruta feature selection, and synthetic minority over-sampling technique [SMOTE]), and three classification algorithms (i.e., partial least squares discriminant analysis, random forest [RF], and support vector machine) for diagnosing soil Cd contamination. A total of 536 soil samples were collected from urban and suburban areas located in Wuhan City, China. Specifically, Boruta and SMOTE strategies were aimed at selecting the most informative predictors and obtaining balanced training datasets, respectively. Results indicated that soils contaminated by Cd induced decrease in spectral reflectance magnitude. Classification models developed after Boruta and SMOTE strategies out-performed to those from full-spectrum. A diagnose model combining CR preprocessing, SMOTE strategy, and RF algorithm achieved the highest validation accuracy for soil Cd (Kappa = 0.74). The Muencheberg Soil Quality Rating (SQR) was developed by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). SQR describes the suitability of sites under agricultural land use and helps to estimate the yield potential of sites at a global scale. This method was especially adapted for application with soil maps by the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Resources BGR and is published in the documentation of Ad-hoc-AG Boden (representing the soil experts of the geological services of the German federal states). The map shows the SQR for cropland in Germany based on the landuse stratified soilmap of Germany at scale 1:1,000,000. Climate (DWD), Relief (BKG) and landuse data (CLC2006) are used as input data in addition to the soil map. SQR consists of a series of pedotransfer rules. First, eight basic soil properties are weighted and combined to describe the soil (substrate, rooting depth, etc.). Next, hazard indicators are derived (drought risk, soil depth above solid rock). These indicators are critical for farming and limit the overall soil quality. Only those hazard indicators were selected for SQR which have the greatest effect on potential grain yield. The final SQR-score ranges from about 0 to 102 points.
["bodenwert", "bundesrepublik-deutschland", "de", "ertragspotential", "infofeatureaccessservice", "soil
["creator
https://services.bgr.de/wms/boden/sqr1000/?
http://data.europa.eu/88u/dataset/1c23bdc2-c77f-4581-911a-bcdbf54ecec5
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/1FA71F7D-7341-4870-BCF8-53230806B3BB
Der interoperable INSPIRE-WMS ist ein Darstellungsdienst, der Daten im Annex-Schema Boden (abgeleitet aus dem originären Datensatz: Retentionsflächen Überschwemmung Brandenburg) bereitstellt. Architecture determines the location of microbial associations within root systems, which, when integrated with soil vertical gradients, determines the functions and the metabolic capability of rhizosphere microbial communities. We argue that variation in root architecture in crops has important implications for root exudation, microbial recruitment and function, and the decomposition and fate of root tissues and exudates. Recent research has shown that the root microbiome changes along root axes and among root classes, that root tips have a unique microbiome, and that root exudates change within the root system depending on soil physicochemical conditions. Although fresh exudates are produced in larger amounts in root tips, the rhizosphere of mature root segments also plays a role in influencing soil vertical gradients. We argue that more research is needed to understand specific root phenotypes that structure microbial associations and discuss candidate root phenotypes that may determine the location of microbial hotspots within root systems with relevance to agricultural systems.</p
2. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of soil water and N stresses on growth, physiological responses, leaf structure, carbon gain and WUE of maize. The plants were subjected to different soil water and N regimes to maturity. The results showed that the photosynthesis (An) and stomatal conductance (Gs) decreased significantly under the water stressed treatments across the N treatments mainly ascribed to the decreased plant water status. The moderate water stress reduced the photosynthetic capacity and activity and also caused damage to the structure of leaves, resulting in the significant reduction of An, and thus decreased WUEi. The dark respiration (Rd) was significantly decreased due to the damage of mitochondria, however, the Rd/An increased significantly and the carbon gain was seriously compromised, eventually inhibiting biomass growth under the moderately water stressed treatment. Increasing N dose further aggravated the severity of water deficit, decreased An, Gs and WUEi, damaged the structure and reduced the number of mitochondria of leaves, while increased Rd/An considerably under moderate water stress. Consequently, the biomass accumulation, carbon gain and plant level WUEp in the moderately water stressed treatment decreased markedly under the high N supply. Therefore, excessive N application should be avoided when plants suffer soil water stress in maize production.
2. Data inform about weekly redox potential (Eh), pH and element concentrations (TC, IC, OC, NO2- -N, NO3- -N, PO43- -P, SO42- -S, total Ca, K, Mg, P, Fe, Al, Mn, and Zn) in filtered (0.45 µm) and unfiltered ( 1 µm) soil pore water samples collected in 2019. They are partly published in Baumann et al. 2020, Phosphorus cycling and spring barley crop response to varying redox potential, Vadose Zone J., DOI: 10.1002/vzj2.20088

Research domain: Soil Sciences

Research question: Controlled drainage may affect phosphorus mobilization in soil. To assess P mobilization at different redox conditions, three soil profiles with redoximorphic features were selected along a slight hill slope and lysimeter monoliths were collected by drilling. Lysimeters were cropped with spring barley and catch-cropped with serradella. Water levels of the monoliths were adjusted to high and low water table to mimic closed and open drainage, respectively. The redox potential (Eh) was measured in situ and pore water was sampled weekly from three different depths of the lysimeters to determine pH and the element concentrations total C, P, Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ca, Mg, and K, as well as inorganic and organic C (DIC, DOC), PO43--P, SO42--S, NO2-- and NO3- -N, Cl- and Br- in solutions (0.45 µm and 1 µm).
2. These potentials can also be managed by taking into account other parameters (e.g. irrigation networks, socio-economic data, land...). The GDPA tool is based on the study of three soil cultural potentials: field crops, quantitative viticulture (PGI base) and market gardening. Synthesis of the three, the global cultural potential makes it possible to understand the cultural diversification capacity of a soil. Thus, the soils most conducive to diversification (strong global potential) allow the development of a large number of crops. The GDPA decision support tool was established in partnership with the Association Climatologique de l’Hérault (now integrated into the Department), the Hérault Department, the Hérault Chamber of Agriculture and INRAE in 2012/2013. It results from the analysis and processing of agropaedological data from the soil database, established and digitised in 2011. The tool is currently maintained by the Hérault Department. In particular, it has been updated following a work to complement the soil database carried out by the Métropole de Montpellier in 2018/2019. **Limits of completeness:** The mapping does not cover all the municipalities of Herault, nor the total area of each municipality. As a result, an uninvented soil means a lack of data, no conclusion as to the potential of that soil can be inferred from it. **Map accuracy limits:** The mapping of crop potentials is at a scale of 1/10,000th (so-called “communal” scale). Thus, superposition with cadastral plans made on larger scales is not recommended by experts. Different **confidence indices** make it possible to translate the uncertainty of cartographic boundaries. The data made available must therefore be used with caution according to the accuracy limits. The Hérault department and its technical and scientific partners cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies in the databases and for inappropriate uses of the said databases.
["bodenwert", "bundesrepublik-deutschland", "de", "ertragspotential", "soil
["creator
https://download.bgr.de/bgr/Boden/SQR1000/geotiff/sqr1000_250_v10.zip
https://download.bgr.de/bgr/Boden/SQR1000/jpg300/sqr1000_250_v10.zip
https://download.bgr.de/bgr/Boden/SQR1000/pdf/sqr1000_250_v10.zip
https://download.bgr.de/bgr/Boden/SQR1000/png150/sqr1000_250_v10.zip
https://download.bgr.de/bgr/Boden/SQR1000/tiff300/sqr1000_250_v10.zip
http://data.europa.eu/88u/dataset/3dbc11ee-81e9-41a2-916e-1281ddd6c7a8
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/3dbc11ee-81e9-41a2-916e-1281ddd6c7a8
