In particular, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry is one of the most successful emerging techniques in high-resolution topography (HRT) and provides exceptionally fast, low-cost, and easy three-dimensional (3D) survey for geoscience applications. In this chapter, we present an example of SfM application for geoarchaeology. The purpose is to realize HRT digital terrain models (DTMs) of an area of prehistoric agricultural terracing together with a geoarchaeological excavation trench in the Ingram Valley, Northumberland National Park, NE England. The study area is one of the six pilot case studies of TerrACE archeological research project (ERC-2017-ADG: 787790, 2018\u20132023; https://www.terrace.no/), a 5-year European Research Council grant funded by the European Union. An integrated approach utilizing ground-based and UAV (nadir and oblique) images was used to preserve fine-grained topographic detail and permit the accurate survey of highly vegetated areas and steep or subvertical surfaces (e.g., vertical walls of terraces), while also allowing for the capture of large spatial datasets. The SfM-DTM provided an accurate and high level of detail of the terrace landscape, the archeological features, and the soil and sediment stratigraphy along the excavation trench. An additional terrace was identified that had not been recognized before due to the HRT study bringing out a level of detail that had not been previously observable in this area. The SfM 3D outputs allowed the extraction of profiles, sections, scaled plans, and orthomosaics of the terrace complex and the excavation trench, simplifying and speeding the archeologist's field and laboratory work. Climate change is also projected to influence the rainfall amount, and its inter- and intra-annual variability. These changes may affect soil moisture regimes, soil water drainage, soil nitrogen (N) availability and N leaching to aquatic environment and N2O emissions to atmosphere. Thus it is important to study the effects of increased soil temperature and varying rainfall patterns on soil N cycling in arable land from temperate climates, which is a major source of N pollution. An open-field lysimeter study was carried out during 2008\u20132009 in Denmark on loamy sand soil (Typic Hapludult) with three factors: number of rainy days, rainfall amount and soil warming. Number of rainy days included the mean monthly rainy days for 1961\u20131990 as \u2018normal\u2019 and half the number of rainy days of former as \u2018reduced\u2019 treatments. Rainfall amount included mean monthly rainfall for 1961\u20131990 as \u2018present\u2019 and the projected change in mean monthly rainfall for 2071\u20132100 as \u2018future\u2019 treatments. Soil warming included increase in soil temperature by 5\u00a0\u00b0C at 0.1\u00a0m depth as \u2018heated\u2019 and non-heated as \u2018control\u2019 treatments. Automated mobile rain-out shelter and irrigation system, and insulated buried heating cables were used to impose the treatments.  Soil warming, compared with unheated control, advanced winter wheat crop development, and increased the above-ground biomass and N uptake only during vegetative stage, but shortened the total crop growing period by 12 days without reducing the total above-ground biomass. Rainfall amount and rainy days treatments increased the drainage, 46% and 10%, respectively, but did not have additive effect on the drainage. In contrast, soil warming increased crop evapotranspiration (18%) and reduced drainage (41%). Usually in remote sensing, crop mapping is performed using satellite images and within-season ground truth samples that are collected in extensive survey campaigns every year, neglecting information and knowledge that past seasons\u2019 classification models provided. This paper assessed different temporal transferring approaches, including transfer learning, together with traditional crop mapping approach to provide an exhaustive comparison. Transferring approaches differed in portion of knowledge utilized from a historical model and that coming from a target season dataset. Three distinct algorithms, Random Forest, Convolutional Neural Network and Transformer, were employed and evaluated using highly dense time series of Sentinel-1 data. Source and target domain were respectively represented by two sets, 2017\u20132020 and 2021 season data, and 9 different crop types were classified. Results showcased that transferring a model has a great potential in crop mapping when little to no ground truth data is available for the target season. However, traditional approach catches up rather quickly and even surpasses transfer learning approach in terms of performance after a certain portion of target domain data is collected. Without target season ground truth data, model transferring can yield modest crop mapping performance of 78% for F1 score, between 84% and 86% F1 score with transfer learning employed in conjunction with limited target season ground truth (i.e. between 120 and 720 parcels), and 88% F1 score at best with traditional approach (ca. 720 parcels). Even though a good discriminatory is found between different crop types, there is still a room for improvement regarding the least represented classes in the dataset. The study significantly contributes to the area of agricultural monitoring and management by demonstrating the effectiveness of transfer learning while lessening the necessity for extensive and labor-intensive data collection, thereby fostering cost and time efficiency. This work aimed at (i) characterizing the effects of land use (Agroforestry, AF vs. Tree Plantation, TP) on 5-year-old black locust tree growth, tree biomass allocation, and tree C stocks at plot scale, and (ii) assessing the effect of land use on total carbon stocks (AF vs. TP vs. Crop Monoculture). Allometric equations were built for upscaling tree biomass at the plot scale. Biomass of understory vegetation and crops were estimated at the plot scale in the three land uses. Tree diameter was 19 % higher in the AF than in TP, likely due to different light microclimate, while tree height did not vary significantly between land uses. Tree biomass allocation to aboveground and belowground compartments (70 % and 30 % of total tree biomass, respectively) did not vary between land uses. Higher efficiency in building tree carbon stock was shown in agroforestry than in tree plantation per area unit. Trees accounted for 39 % and 66 % of total carbon stocks in biomass in AF and TP, respectively. Understory vegetation accounted for 8 % and 34 % of total carbon stocks in biomass in AF and TP, respectively. Land equivalent ratio values, which involved tree, crop and understory vegetation carbon stocks, did not yet indicate a synergetic effect on accumulation of plant carbon compared to sole crop or tree plantations. Although SCZS greatly affect terrestrial biogeochemical and hydrological cycles, underpinning mechanisms are poorly documented. Herein, we characterized the SCZS of a typical red soil in subtropical China, a type of soil with vast global distribution. The thickness information of three layers was derived from hand augers, boreholes and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) radargrams and incorporated into geographically weighted regression (GWR) models for the reconstruction of paleotopography (Cretaceous sandstone). The interpreted GPR results in terms of thicknesses and interfaces for the three layers were consistent with the borehole logs. The trained GWR models accounted for 43%\u201377% of the spatial variations in the three layers. The paleotopographic elevations were highly correlated with those of the current land surface (r\u00a0=\u00a00.85). Spatial analysis showed that the rougher paleotopography was inherited by the current landform. The SCZS evolution involving mainly the mantling covered by Quaternary red clay (QRC) was primarily driven by terrain attributes. These findings may enhance our understanding of the interaction between the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment. Field experiments were conducted between 2007 and 2009 to evaluate the effects of conservation tillage on the yields and crop water use efficiency of maize ( Zea mays  L.) and cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata  L.) in eastern Kenya. Experimental treatments were a combination of three tillage practices and four cropping systems. Tillage practices were tied-ridges, subsoiling-ripping and ox-ploughing. The cropping systems were single crop maize, single crop cowpea, intercropped maize\u2013cowpea and single crop maize with manure. The treatments were arranged in split plots with tillage practices as the main plots and cropping systems as the sub-plots in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The results showed that tied-ridge tillage had the greatest plant available water content while subsoiling-ripping tillage had the least in all seasons. Averaged across seasons and cropping season, tillage did not have a significant effects on maize grain yield but it did have a significant effect on crop grain and dry matter water use efficiency (WUE). Nevertheless, maize grain yields and WUE values were generally greater under tied-ridge tillage than under subsoiling-ripping and ox-plough tillages. The yields and WUE of cowpea under subsoiling-ripping tillage were less than those of ox-plough tillage. When averaged across the seasons and tillage systems, the cropping system with the manure treatment increased ( P \u00a0\u2264\u00a00.05) maize grain yield, grain WUE and dry matter WUE by 36%, 30%, 26% respectively, compared to treatments without manure. Plastic film mulching (PFM) is one of the major agricultural practices in semi-arid areas, but few studies have synthetically studied the effects of PFM on GHGI, grain yield, soil characteristics, and their potential relationships at different winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growing stages. Here in the semi-arid Chinese Loess Plateau, we simultaneously investigated two cropping systems from 2018 to 2020: PFM with 100 % cover and no film mulching (control). Averaged across two growing seasons, the PFM treatment significantly increased soil temperature, water-filled pore spaces and soil water storage, while sustaining high aboveground biomass (31.9 %) and grain yield (45.5 %). The PFM treatment significantly increased cumulative N<sub>2</sub>O emissions by 56.2 %, CO<sub>2</sub> emissions by 39.7 %, and CH<sub>4</sub> uptake by 151.4 % compared to the control treatment. GHGI are on average 14.2 % lower in the PFM treatment than in the control treatment. Moreover, the PFM treatment significantly improved soil enzyme activities (alkaline phosphatase, catalase, invertase, and urease) and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen from grain filling to maturity stage. Altogether, the reductions in GHGI suggest that PFM-induced increases in grain yield could outweigh the adverse impacts on GHG emissions, underscoring the potential to apply PFM for sustainable intensification of crop production in semi-arid areas.</p>", "keywords": ["2. Soil ecology status contributes to agricultural system sustainability, and evaluations were made to determine the effect of different management practices on soil microbial biomass (SMB) (substrate-induced respiration (SIR) and chloroform fumigation incubation (CFI)) and micro-flora physiological and catabolic diversity (BIOLOG TM ecoplate well system). SMB-C (CFI, SIR) was significantly and respectively 1.2 and 1.3 times higher for residue retention (average 387 mg C kg 1 dry soil and 515 mg C kg 1 dry soil, respectively) compared to residue removal. SMB-C (CFI) was significantly higher for wheat (369 mg C kg 1 dry soil) compared to maize (319 mg C kg 1 dry soil). SMB-N (CFI) was significantly 1.3 times higher for residue retention (average 28 mg N kg 1 dry soil) compared to residue removal. The average well color development (AWCD) obtained by the BIOLOG TM ecoplate essay indicated there were large differences in the catabolic capability of soil microbial communities after 15 years of contrasting management practices. While maize and wheat rotation under conventional tillage with residue retention showed a significantly higher overall AWCD value compared to the other treatments, AWCD of maize with zero tillage and residue removal was significantly lower than in the other treatments. AWCD was significantly higher for residue retention compared to residue removal and for wheat as compared to maize. For maize, the management practices were divided into two groups; zero tillage with residue removal was separate from all other treatments. For wheat, conventional tillage was separate from all zero tillage treatments. This study suggests that in the target area, a cropping system that includes zero tillage, crop rotation, and crop residue retention can increase overall biomass and micro-flora activity and diversity compared with common farming practices. Analyzing &gt;48,000 individual earthworms collected over 950 plots, we calculated two indices: the misclassification rate (MR) and the undetected rate (UR) to assess the reliability of classification into earthworm morphotypes. The results indicated an average MR of 28 % and an average UR of 32 %, which both varied according to morphotypes. Endogeics had lower error rates compared to epigeics, anecics with a red anterior, and anecics with a black anterior. Our findings underscored the significant impact of sampler experience and earthworm community composition on the reliability of classification of individuals into morphotypes by citizens. The results highlight the critical need for enhanced support and guidance for participants with limited experience. Furthermore, we recommend providing additional training or resources to aid in morphotype classification, especially for earthworm communities exhibiting low abundance, low adult proportion, or low morphotype diversity. Among the widely studied GIS procedures for extracting slope length, the distributed watershed erosion slope length (DWESL) based on the unit contributing area estimation method, which considers two-dimensional runoff process and cutoff factors, is a relatively complete model for calculating slope length. Slope length in the DWESL model is primarily calculated using conventional flow direction algorithms such as D8, Dinf, MS and MFD-md. However, DWESL outputs require further improvement due to the errors in the usual estimates of the uphill contributing area and the effective contour length of discrete elements. Combined with a theoretical differential equation of specific catchment area on hillsides, the calculation of the DWESL model was optimized without estimating the uphill contributing area or the effective contour length for each cell. The proposed integration method based on the topographical features slope line, contour curvature and cutoff factors (ITF method) was used to extract slope length from the raster digital elevation. Slope length extracted using the ITF method had the smallest error in verification of mathematical surfaces (average RRMSE \u00a0=\u00a00.0573), and its spatial distribution was more consistent with the structure of the terrain surface for all test data, relative to the conventional flow direction algorithms in the original DWESL model. The numerical integration of this IVP is carried out by extending to unsaturated condition, the well-known explicit substepping formulation with automatic error control widely used for saturated soils. A notable feature of the substepping integration scheme presented is that it integrates simultaneously the model equations for both mechanical and water retention responses. Hence, the estimate of the local truncation error to automatically adjust the size of the integration step is not only affected by the local error in stresses and mechanical hardening parameter (as in a saturated soil model) but, additionally, by the local error incurred in the integration of the water retention relations (i.e. degree of saturation and water retention hardening parameter). This study aimed at determining spatial relationships of cereal yields and the selected soil physical and chemical properties in three study years (2001-2003) on low productive sandy Podzol soil (Podlasie, Poland). The yields and soil properties in plough and subsoil layers were determined at 72-150 points. The test crops were: wheat, wheat and barley mixture and oats. To explore the spatial relationship between cereal yields and each soil property spatial statistics was used. The best fitting models were adjusted to empirical semivariance and cross-semivariance, which were used to draw maps using kriging. Majority of the soil properties and crop yields exhibited low and medium variability (coefficient of variation 5-70%). The effective ranges of the spatial dependence (the distance at which data are autocorrelated) for yields and all soil properties were 24.3-58.5m and 10.5-373m, respectively. Nugget to sill ratios showed that crop yields and soil properties were strongly spatially dependent except bulk density. Majority of the pairs in cross-semivariograms exhibited strong spatial interdependence. The ranges of the spatial dependence varied in plough layer between 54.6m for yield\u00d7pH up to 2433m for yield\u00d7silt content. Corresponding ranges in subsoil were 24.8m for crop yield\u00d7clay content in 2003 and 1404m for yield\u00d7bulk density. Kriging maps allowed separating sub-field area with the lowest yield and soil cation exchange capacity, organic carbon content and pH. This area had lighter color on the aerial photograph due to high content of the sand and low content of soil organic carbon. Sediment grain size exhibited a landward/upward decreasing trend. This trend is mainly attributed to attenuation of hydrodynamics. A 630-day series of daily surface sediment sampling at a fixed site on an unvegetated intertidal flat revealed significant seasonal and storm-cyclic changes in grain size. This temporal variability was related to alternating accretion/erosion events, with erosion associated with coarser grain size. Such temporal dynamics were not present in vegetation, where sediment remained fine grained throughout the year. In the marsh, vegetation cover enables the trapping of fine-grained sediments in the following ways: (a) adherence of suspended sediments onto plants; (b) deposition of suspended sediments stimulated by attenuation of hydrodynamics through plant obstruction; and (c) prevention of resuspension of fine-grained deposits due to the protection of the plant canopy. The influence of vegetation on sediment grain size was clearly seen when comparing sediment trapped by different vegetation types and seasonal patterns of trapped sediment on different vegetation canopy densities. The relatively high plant biomass of the recently introduced Spartina alterniflora enhanced the trapping effect, whereas plant degradation due to buffalo grazing reduced the trapping effect. The management practices, most frequently suggested to increase soil organic carbon content have variable effects depending on pedo-climatic conditions and have to be applied for a long time periods to maintain their sink capacity. Biochar (BC), a carbon rich product obtained through carbonization of biomass, can be used for carbon sequestration by applying large amounts of carbon very resistant to decomposition. The BC remains into soil for a long time and there is evidence that the BC stores atmospheric carbon from centennial, to millennial timescales. However most of the agronomic studies on BC application have been made in tropical and sub-tropical climates, while there is a substantial lack of studies at mid-latitudes and in temperate climates. This paper presents the results on an investigation of large volume application of BC (30 and 60 t ha-1) on durum wheat in the Mediterranean climate condition, showing the viability of BC application for carbon sequestration on this crop. BC application also has positive effects up to 30% on biomass production and yield, with no differences in grain nitrogen content. Moreover no significant differences between the two BC treatments were detected, suggesting that even very high BC application rates promote plant growth and are, certainly, not detrimental. Considerable deep drainage was found especially in 1999-2000, during which period up to 273.9 mm of water, accounting for 60.6% of total amount of irrigation and 24.7% of total surface input (rainfall+irrigation), was lost by deep drainage. Even in both wheat cropping seasons when total amount of surface input was less than total actual evapotranspiration, 84.0 and 121.3 mm water was lost by drainage in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Soil NO3(-)-N was transported to deeper soil layers during the growing seasons and considerable amount of NO3(-)-N accumulated at 170 cm soil layer (the bottom of root zone) during the September-October period (the harvest time of summer corn) every year. Our objectives were firstly to investigate metal ion activity in soil solution, distribution in solid constituents, and spatial distribution in samples, secondly to determine dominant environment factors controlling metal activity in the long-term AMD-polluted subtropical soils. Soil Column Donnan Membrane Technology (SC-DMT) combined with sequential extraction shows that unusually large proportion of the metal ions are present as free ion in the soil solutions. The narrow range of low pH values prevents any pH effects during the binding onto oxides or organic matter. Grab sampling and auto sampling campaigns were accomplished with respect to various weather conditions in the catchment area. Flow volumes and hydraulic retention times (HRT) from various sampling dates which provide information on processes causing emission changes were additionally taken into account. Monitoring results showed that concentration scattering in the effluent is related to HRT in the sewage treatment plants. Dilution effects following rain events in the catchment area were analysed for the three investigated substances. Short-term emission changes explained by dilution only could be well determined by the mathematical relation between discharge and concentration, and for carbamazepine to be solely determined by the dilution effects at all HRTs. For metoprolol, a clear decrease in concentrations was observed at HRTs above 80\u202fh, and a significant contribution of biodegradation was supported by independent biodegradation tests. For three out of the four STPs, a decrease in concentrations of diclofenac was observed at hydraulic retention times above 80\u202fh, indicating removal, whereas the relationship between concentration and HRT of the other STP could be explained by dilution only. The study shows that emissions can vary with weather conditions, hampering the assessment of emissions and estimation of concentrations in surface waters from generic removal rates only. End-of-season yield results do not permit the evaluation of within-season management interactions with the production environment and do not allow for full understanding of the management practice applied. Crop growth and development were measured during the 2004, 2006 and 2008 crop cycles with an optical handheld NDVI sensor for all plots of the different management treatments of a long-term (since 1991) sustainability trial in the highlands of Mexico. Cropping systems varying in (1) tillage (conventional vs. zero tillage); (2) residue management (retention vs. removal); (3) rotation (monocropping vs. a maize [ Zea mays  L.]/wheat [ Triticum aestivum  L.] rotation) were compared. The NDVI-handheld sensor was evaluated as a tool to monitor crop growth and development and was found to be an excellent tool for this purpose. There was a strong relation between NDVI and biomass accumulation of maize and wheat. The measurement with the handheld sensor was non-destructive and fast so that a representative plot area could be measured easily and time-efficiently. Zero tillage induced different crop growth dynamics over time compared to conventional tillage. Zero tillage with residue retention is characterized by a slower initial crop growth, compensated for by an increased growth in the later stages, positively influencing final grain yield. Also crop rotation influenced early crop growth, with lower NDVI values for crops sown after wheat than crops after maize. Zero tillage with residue removal had low NDVI values throughout the growing season. Zero tillage with retention of crop residues results in time efficient use of resources, as opposed to conventional tillage, regardless of residue management, and zero tillage with residue removal. The results indicated that different tillage, rotation and residue management practices influence crop growth and development. Field experiments were conducted on the Loess Plateau for two growing seasons to investigate the effects of different Se fertiliser application methods and application rates on the Se content in maize grain as well as the Se recovery, yield and status of other nutrients in maize grain under rain-fed conditions. Results show that soil and foliar Se applications exhibited no significant effects on maize biomass and grain yield as well as N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn contents in maize grain. However, both foliar and soil Se applications significantly improved the Se content in maize grain. Selenium content in maize grain is found to be linearly correlated with Se application rates, increasing from 0.12\u03bcgkg\u22121 to 0.33\u03bcgkg\u22121 by soil application at 1g of Se ha\u22121 and from 8.23\u03bcgkg\u22121 to 8.67\u03bcgkg\u22121 by foliar application at the same rate. BSG and FBSG inclusion weakened gluten network properties versus the semolina control but was more favourable than the wholemeal control. Addition of BSG and FBSG produced pasta with a greater nutritional profile, having a higher fibre content and lower predicted glycaemic index compared to semolina pasta. BSG and FBSG addition enhanced tensile strength and pasta firmness versus wholemeal pasta. The study was carried out in a moist tropical forest in Bolivia, where we monitored twelve 27-ha plots for 4 years. Plots received one of four treatments in which logging intensity and silvicultural treatments were varied: control (no logging); normal (reduced-impact) logging; normal logging and low-intensity silviculture; and, increased logging intensity and high-intensity silviculture. Tree growth rates increased with intensity of logging and silvicultural treatments. The growth rates of FCTs of commercial species were 50\u201360% higher in plots that received silvicultural treatments than in the normal logging and control plots. Responses to silvicultural treatments varied among functional groups. The largest increase in growth rates was observed in FCTs belonging to the partially shade-tolerant and the shade-tolerant groups. In many regions agricultural fields are just one component of a complex landscape matrix and understanding the interactions between agricultural fields and other landscape components such as wetlands is crucial for comprehensive, whole-landscape accounting of soil organic carbon (SOC) change. Our objective was to assess the effects of management and erosional history on SOC storage in wetlands of a typical hummocky agricultural landscape in southern Saskatchewan. Wetlands were classed into three land management groups: native wetlands (i.e., within a native landscape), and uncultivated and cultivated wetlands within an agricultural landscape. Detailed topographic surveys were used to develop a digital elevation model of the sites and landform segmentation algorithms were used to delineate the topographic data into landform elements. SOC density to 45 cm was assessed at seven uncultivated wetlands, seven cultivated wetlands, and twelve native wetlands. Mean SOC density decreased from 175.1 mg ha? 1 to 30 cm (equivalent mass depth) for the native wetlands to 168.6 mg ha? 1 for the uncultivated wetlands and 87.2 mg ha? 1 for the cultivated wetlands in the agricultural field. The SOC density of sediment depositional fans in the uncultivated wetlands is high but the total SOC stored in the fans is low due to their small area. The uncultivated wetlands occupy only 11% of the site but account for approximately 23% of SOC stores. Re-establishing permanent vegetation in the cultivated wetlands could provide maximum C sequestration with minimum energy inputs and a minimum loss of productive acreage but the overall consequences for the gas emissions would have to be carefully assessed.", "keywords": ["2. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of early-season drainage for mitigating CH4 and N2O emissions from soils with and without added organic amendments in relation to native soil organic carbon (SOC). Rice plants were grown in pots under controlled conditions in a growth chamber with different treatments in a 2\u00a0\u00d7\u00a02\u00a0\u00d7\u00a03 factorial design. The treatments included an arable soil with two different carbon levels: 1.4% (low carbon, [L]) and 2.2% (high carbon [H]); two water regimes: midseason drainage (M) and early plus midseason drainage (EM); and three nutrient treatments: one inorganic control (nitrogen fertiliser only [N]), and two organic: maize straw\u00a0+\u00a0N fertiliser (S) and maize compost\u00a0+\u00a0N fertiliser (C). An equal amount of mineral N fertiliser was applied in all treatments. Straw and compost were applied to the soils on the basis of an equivalent amount of C added in each organic treatment.  The results revealed rapid mineralization of organic C in the double-drained system, resulting in lower total CH4 emissions in treatments under early plus midseason drainage compared to those under midseason drainage only. Total CH4 emissions were reduced by 89% and 92% in the S\u00a0+\u00a0EM treatments in low C soils and high C soils respectively, as compared to S\u00a0+\u00a0M. The drainage effects on CH4 emissions from compost amendments were only significant in the low C soil, with a 61% reduction in EM compared to M drainage. N2O emissions from non-organic treatments in EM were 87% higher than in M under low C soils. The concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were higher in organic treatments and decreased by the end of growth period. Methods to estimate LS based on geographic information systems have been developed in the last two decades. Due to the absence of an estimation of slope length, the UCA method is insufficiently accurate. Improvement of the spatial accuracy of slope length and LS factor is still necessary for estimating soil erosion. The purpose of this study was to develop an improved method to estimate the slope length and LS factor. We combined the algorithm for multiple-flow direction (MFD) used in the UCA method with the LS-TOOL (LS-TOOLSFD) algorithms, taking into account the calculation errors and cutoff conditions for distance, to obtain slope length (\u03bb) and the LS factor. The new method, LS-TOOLMFD, was applied and validated in a catchment with complexly variable slopes. The slope length and LS calculated by LS-TOOLMFD both agreed better with field data than with the calculations using the LS-TOOLSFD and UCA methods, respectively. We then integrated the LS-TOOLMFD algorithm into LS-TOOL developed in Microsoft's .NET environment using C# with a user-friendly interface. The method can automatically calculate slope length, slope steepness, L, S, and LS factor, providing the results as ASCII files that can be easily used in GIS software and erosion models. A.\u00a0tortilis  allowed the establishment of new species probably due to an improvement in soil fertility and microclimate. The positive effect of the tree on its understory vegetation was especially noticeable in protected areas during the two years. Open ditches could be a potential location for P mitigation if the right location was identified, depending on P sources entering the ditch and the source-sink dynamics at the sediment-water interface. The objective of this study was to identify the right location along a ditch to mitigate P losses on an intensive dairy farm. High spatial resolution grab samples for water quality, along with sediment and bankside samples, were collected along an open ditch network to characterise the P dynamics within the ditch. In this study, a decision support tool was used to identify appropriate media that may be placed in filters for the removal of DRP and NH4. The selected media for this study were sand and zeolite. Both media were placed in acrylic tubes each with an internal diameter of 0.01 m and with lengths ranging from 0.1 to 0.4 m, and their performance for simultaneous removal of DRP and NH4 (1 mg DRP and NH4-N L\u22121) from water was evaluated. The data generated from the RSSCTs were used to model DRP and NH4 removals in 0.4 m-long laboratory columns of internal diameter 0.1 m, which had the same media configuration as the small columns and were operated using the same influent concentrations. The developed model successfully predicted the effluent concentration of both the DRP and NH4-N from the large columns. Here we present results of a multi proxy sedimentological and geochemical investigation of Kurortne loess-paleosol section from southwestern Ukraine, coupled with detailed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. OSL investigations were carried out on quartz grains of different grain sizes (4-11 \u03bcm, 63-90 \u03bcm and 90-125\u03bcm), using the single aliquot regenerative (SAR) protocol. The OSL dating results are in line with previous findings on dating loess-paleosol sequences along the Black Sea shore in Romania, as well as worldwide: (i) ages obtained on different grain sizes are in agreement for equivalent doses of less than 200 Gy, whereas for higher equivalent doses 4-11 \u03bcm ages underestimate the coarser fraction ages; and (ii) an inverse correlation between dated grain size fractions and saturation characteristics is reported. Our combined dating and sedimentological approach would confirm that the investigated uppermost 4.5 m at Kurortne cover the Last Glacial Cycle, adding important data in better constraining local and regional chronostratigraphic correlations. The application of the SAR protocol on 63-90 \u03bcm quartz grains on samples collected from the lower part of S1 soil (the Kaydaky unit) and from the Kaydaky/Pryluky units boundary produced ages of 123 \u00b1 10 ka and 85 \u00b1 6 ka, respectively. As the temporal range covered by these units in the Ukrainian Quaternary stratigraphic framework is still debatable, our results confirm the broad correlation of the Kaydaky-Pryluky paleosol units at Kurortne with the last interglacial (i.e., MIS 5). However, the application of digital photogrammetric tools allowed to perform the sub-millimeter surface modeling of the rock art objects and to re-examine and reconsider the engravings that were previously attributed to Pleistocene. The modeling results presented in this article revealed the complete absence of figurative images for the collection of portable art specimens and the dubious character of those for the cave art one. Therefore, the whole collection should be reconsidered, studied and attributed according to the state of the art and contemporary archaeological record in the region. Here we present a detailed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology as well as multi-proxy analysis obtained for the first time on the Enders section, located in southwestern Nebraska, central Great Plains. The section records multiple episodes of rapid loess deposition alternating with soil formation. Rapid accumulation of Late Pleistocene Peoria Loess was replaced around 13-14 ka by formation of the Brady Soil until 9.5 \u00b1 0.6 ka. The Holocene Bignell Loess then buried the Brady Soil and accumulated episodically throughout the Holocene. The loess-paleosol stratigraphy since the Late Pleistocene at the Enders site is very similar to that at other sites in western Nebraska, and the newly developed OSL chronology (based on three grain size classes) adds new confidence to earlier dating. The high-resolution grain size profile from Enders shares many features with similar data from the previously studied Wauneta site, including three peaks of fine-grained material just above and within the Brady Soil, likely representing response to millennial-scale climatic changes during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. This study demonstrates the potential for developing high-resolution, well-dated paleoclimatic records from the loess of the central Great Plains. However, the natural signal measured using multi-grain aliquots of quartz was found to be below the laboratory saturation level. A comparison was made between synthetic dose response curves (DRCs) generated from single-grain and multi-grain aliquot data, respectively; the natural signal was found to be closer to the latoratory saturation level (92%) in the case of the single-grain synthetic DRC than for the multi-grain synthetic DRC where the signal was 86% of the saturation level. This difference could not be attributed to stimulation with different wavelengths, i.e. blue and green light stimulation for multi and single-grain measurements, respectively. By analysing synthetic data obtained by grouping grains according to their brightness, it was observed that brighter grains give a natural signal closer to the laboratory saturation level. This trend was confirmed for multi-grain aliquot data.
