For Belgium, the application was carried out at the regional scale for the Flanders region. The automatically generated yearly soil sealing maps (1 m resolution GeoTIFF rasters) combine “known” sealing from administrative databases (buildings and transport infrastructure) with modelled sealing based on artificial intelligence. Administrative databases do not (adequately) cover parking lots, private driveways and garden terraces, which are a substantial part of the sealed area in Flanders. Hence, a machine learning model was built for deriving this remaining sealing from aerial imagery. For this purpose, an assessor manually labeled the sealed parts on a subset of the images. Based on this training set, a convolutional neural network model was used to produce a sealing probability map, which was converted to a binary modelled sealing map. Finally, a continuity correction was applied to ensure a temporally consistent result across the yearly maps. The objective of the SERENA project was to develop methods to calculate and map soil-based ecosystem services and soil threats. The selected indicator was the degree of soil sealing. By evaluating this degree at two moments in time, the change in soil sealing can be determined. The following data were used: Large-scale Reference Database (Grootschalig Referentiebestand or Basiskaart), the digital topographic reference map for Flanders (vector) Medium-scale annual winter aerial images of Flanders (15 or 25 cm raster resolution) This dataset is originally hosted at Geopunt (www.geopunt.be). A way to consolidate the approach could be to introduce some aspects into the ESs assessments which might have been neglected so far. Such aspects are mainly: (1) a focus on the complex ESs relations (such as synergies and trade-offs) that can impact the supply of multiple SESs (soil ecosystem services), and (2) focus on potential drivers of SESs relations. We applied bivariate and multivariate approaches to SESs indicators derived from a solid pedological knowledge of the Emilia-Romagna study area in NE Italy. We focused on 7 SES: (1) habitat for soil organisms, (2) filtering and buffering capacity, (3) contribution to microclimate regulation, (4) carbon sequestration, (5) food provision potential, (6) water regulation, and (7) water storage capacity. These SESs were estimated through a combination of point observations, and pedotransfer functions (PTF) estimates spatialised over the area of interest with geostatistical simulation techniques. We found that SESs bivariate spatial relations could be categorised mainly in three types of patterns at regional scale, either: (1) synergistic SESs relations dominating at the region level, (2) trade-offs dominating, or (3) both kind of relations more or less equally frequent. Interestingly, in some cases the dominant regional SESs relation switched at a local level, and such switch was driven by soil properties. For the multivariate case (>2 SESs), two main results are highlighted. First, the combination of properties of some soils is so characteristic that they conform a single SESs bundle, as in the case of the rich SOM soils of alluvial origin in the NE of the region with low agricultural productivity, but high value in regulating SESs. Secondly, some SESs such as potential food provision and water regulation are more important than others to determine locations with high multi-services value at a regional level. This suggests that attention must be paid when ascribing high multi-services value locations as this is not independent of SESs relations. Overall, our results highlight the importance of soils in the potential supply of ESs and show that SESs relations are useful in the implementation of the concept in environmental assessments.
2. A systematic review

Prospective studies and scenario-based approaches are pivotal to support land planning, agricultural and environmental management. The integration of soils within such approaches have recently developed significantly, alongside the increasing attention given to soil-related ecosystem services (ES). Such interest is explained by the urgent need to assess how soil ecosystem services and their related threats (ST) (e.g. soil erosion, soil biodiversity loss, soil contamination, soil sealing) may evolve in response to potential changes in climate, production systems or land management. This generally involves describing the dynamics of soil changes over time as a function of different driving forces (e.g., climate change, public policies), but also assessing variations in space considering soil characteristics.A group of researchers participating in the SERENA project of the EJP Soil program conducted a meta-analysis to study the methods used in existing prospective studies focusing on six soil ES (e.g. biomass production, habitat for biodiversity, hydrological control, environmental pollution control, greenhouse gas and climate regulation, pest and disease control) and ten ST (e.g. soil erosion, soil organic carbon loss, nutrient imbalance, soil acidification, soil contamination, waterlogging, soil compaction, soil sealing, salinization, loss of diversity). Approximately 150 scientific articles referenced in Scopus and the Web of Science were selected in order to analyze how soil properties are considered in scenario-based approaches for ES and ST mapping and assessment. The objective of this study is to show the results of this review which involved multiple researchers at the European level in order to highlight how soils are accounted for in ES and ST assessment and mapping exercises through scenario-based approaches. More particularly, the aims of the review are to: i) understand what main drivers are used in scenarization approaches (e.g. land use changes, climate change) and how the scenarios are developed; ii) what are the main soil properties and the associated metrics used to assess and map soil ES and ST, and; iii) what methodological approaches are currently chosen to assess ES and ST changes across time and space. The outcomes of such an analysis would help highlighting the state of the art of soil ES and ST research at the European level and, therefore, establish milestones to guide future trajectories in the field. This might support and encourage the harmonization of practices at the European level in ES-related studies and in scenarization practices, in order to create operational and homogeneous tools and frameworks to support the development of pertinent strategies and land-planning policies, with a specific focus on agricultural lands.

[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "2. The following auxiliary data was used: K-Factor, Land-Cover Map, Long-term 30 yr averaged monthly rainfall, LS-Factor given by Panagos et al. (2015). The dataset will be mostly useful as a reference result for actors that want to learn to implement the part of the soil erosion cookbook of SERENA dealing with the creation of an erosion map. It has limited use as an erosion map for Flanders because a more detailed and accurate map exists for Flanders based on regional covariates. This dataset is originally hosted at DOV (https://www.dov.vlaanderen.be/), for the most up to date version of the dataset access the data from the DOV repository through the DOV services. The agreement of participants with proposed definitions and indicator allocations was demanded and the possibility for text comments was provided. The results showed a high level of agreement with the proposed definitions, only a few were rated distinctively lower than the average and therefore chosen for reformulation. One of the objective of SERENA project was to develop methods to calculate and map soil-based ecosystem services and soil threats. The present data was prepared according to the methodology of the SERENA Soil erosion and soil erosion control cookbook. Soil loss was used as an indicator for soil erosion (ST). By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales. This SERENA dataset (100 m resolution) of soil orgnanic carbon concentration (0-20 cm soil layer) for Flanders was mainly produced to test the methodology of the SERENA SOC LOSS cookbook of the European SERENA EJP SOIL project. The data was prepared according to the methodology of SERENA SOC LOSS cookbook. The objective of SERENA project was to develop methods to calculate and map soil-based ecosystem services and soil threats. Soil organic carbon concentration was used as an indicator for soil organic carbon loss (ST). The map was based on digital soil mapping according to the method used in the EJP SOIL project WP6: Digital soil mapping approach with random forest using ISRIC workflow seedling. To create the soil organic carbon concentration map, we used soil organic carbon data of the regional soil organic carbon monitoring network Cmon in Flanders (0-10 and 10-30 cm soil layer) from the period 2021-2024. The soil organic carbon concentration of the 0-20 cm was derived from the 0-10 and 10-30 cm Cmon data. The following auxiliary data was used: Digitale bodemkaart van het Vlaams Gewest: bodemtypes; Regional climate data; Landgebruik - Vlaanderen - toestand 2022; Tertiair geologische kaart (1/50.000); Bodembedekkingskaart (BBK), 1m resolutie, opname 2021; WRB Soil Units 40k: Bodemkaart van het Vlaamse Gewest volgens het internationale bodemclassificatiesysteem World Reference Base op schaal 1:40.000; Digitaal Hoogtemodel Vlaanderen II, DSM, raster, 1 m. The dataset will be mostly useful as a reference result for actors that want to learn to implement the part of the soil organic carbon loss cookbook of SERENA dealing with the creation of a SOC concentration map. It can have limited use as an interim SOC concentration map for Flanders until a better map becomes available using an optimised methodology and/or new data from the regional soil organic carbon monitoring network that was not yet available when this map was created. The map was generated to evaluate soil organic carbon (SOC) loss in Estonian agricultural soils. It is directly related to SERENA project WP3, T3.2, D3.3 with the aim of applying cookbooks to assess soil threats or ecosystem services. This map is the outcome of applying a cookbook developed by ISRIC (Genova, G., Poggio, L., Kempen, B., & Colman, B. DSM Workflow Seedling. ISRIC - World Soil Information. https://doi.org/10.17027/ISRIC-FSX2-2691). The generated map of SOC loss expressed as absolute sequestration rate (t C ha-1 a-1) between 2015 and 2021 is in GEOTIFF format at the resolution of 100m. The input data for the cookbook was from the PANDA database, which contains regular soil monitoring and voluntary soil sampling data by farmers in Estonia. To achieve the aim for accounting SOC loss in agricultural soils temporal pairs were selected resulting in 1037 paired points where the interval between second sampling was more than 5 years. SOC stocks were calculated for the depth of 20 cm using the equation by Adams (1973) to calculate soil bulk density. The calculated SOC stock for time0 and time2 (> 5 years resampled locations) were used as input points for digital soil mapping, that is the ISRIC cookbook.
Estonia", "Task3.2", "ESTONIA", "EJPSOIL", "WP3", "SERENA project", "D3.3", "SOC loss", "Grant n 862695", "DSM Workflow Seedling
["creator
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13986640
Open AccessThe data are derived from the calculation of indicators based on a standard methodology established as part of the EJP Soil SERENA programme.
