This deadly fungal pathogen was introduced into North America from Asia before the turn of the 20th century, quickly spreading throughout the natural range of the American chestnut tree. In the course of a single generation, chestnut blight destroyed billions of American chestnut trees in forests across North America, driving it almost to extinction. The genome assembly for C. parasitica EP155 (v. 2.0, available at https://mycocosm.jgi.doe.gov/Crypa2/Crypa2.info.html) contains 26 main genome scaffolds totaling 43.9 Mb, and was sequenced at the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. The information and documents contained within this Ag Data Commons dataset provide supplementary data about the EP155 genome assembly, including scaffold summaries, genetic maps, mitochondrial DNA, P450s, secondary metabolite clusters, vegetative incompatibility genes, and transposable elements. Efforts for private and public governance are increasingly emerging to leverage sustainable soil management. They require consensus across science, policy, and practice about what sustainable soil management entails. Such agreement does not yet exist to a sufficient extent in agronomic terms; what is lacking is a concise list of soil management measures that enjoy broad support among all stakeholders, and evidence on the question what hampers their implementation by farmers. We therefore screened stakeholder documents from public governance institutions, nongovernmental organizations, the agricultural industry, and conventional and organic farmer associations for recommendations related to agricultural soil management in Germany. Out of 46 recommended measures in total, we compiled a shortlist of the seven most consensual ones: (1) structural landscape elements, (2) organic fertilization, (3) diversified crop rotation, (4) permanent soil cover, (5) conservation tillage, (6) reduced soil loads, and (7) optimized timing of wheeling. Together, these measures support all agricultural soil functions, and address all major soil threats except soil contamination. Implementation barriers were identified with the aid of an online survey among farmers (n = 78). Results showed that a vast majority of farmers (> 80%) approved of all measures. Barriers were mostly considered to be economic and in some cases technological, while missing knowledge or other factors were less relevant. Barriers were stronger for those measures that cannot be implemented in isolation, but require a systemic diversification of the production system. This is especially the case for measures that are simultaneously beneficial to many soil functions (measures 2, 3, and 4). Turbulence is the irregular almost random fluctuation in velocity, temperature, and scalars. Research accordingly focuses on turbulent exchange processes. While those processes are mostly understood during the day, we need to improve our understanding of the nocturnal boundary layer especially during calm winds. Correspondingly, this doctoral thesis investigated turbulence within the nocturnal boundary layer using spatially explicit observations near the ground surface. The observations were taken during the Shallow Cold Pool experiment (SCP) in Colorado, USA, in 2012. The data set had a unique combination of different techniques also featuring fiber-optic distributed sensing~(FODS) with spatial continuous measurements. The gentle terrain of the field site was chosen as it commonly is assumed to have a rather small impact on the nocturnal boundary layer and represents most of the earth's surface. For investigating turbulence, we developed a nighttime classification scheme based on a surface energy balance which determined static stability, wind regime, and longwave radiative forcing as the three forcing parameter. Not only each forcing parameter had a specific impact on turbulence but also the three selected night classes determined by the combination of them, hence, they were further investigated. The first night class represented conditions with strong dynamic forcing elevating near-surface temperature by topographically induced mixing at the North shoulder of the valley. The second night class was a concurrence of topographically induced mixing and cold air at the bottom of the valley due to strong radiative cooling. The third night class was characteristic of weak winds eroding the impact of mechanical mixing but enhancing the impact of cold air within the valley. Consequently, the proposed classification scheme is successful in sorting the experimental data into physically meaningful temperature and flow regimes representing turbulence within the boundary layer. The classification scheme, however, was not successful in detecting submeso-scales motions which also impact turbulence within the weak-wind boundary layer significantly. A follow up study showed that at three different field site including SCP the variability of temperature is significantly increased during the submeso scale and usually is larger than the nocturnal temperature trend. Accordingly, a case study of the SCP data featuring a submeso-scale motion was investigated in detail. During weak winds a transient cold-air pool developed within the valley which was displaced uphill towards the North shoulder by a South-Westerly flow. At the North shoulder temperatures were usually elevated due to turbulent mixing. Consequently, the two air masses created a sharp boundary which we refer to as thermal submeso-front (TSF) in the following studies. We anticipate that these interactions are globally common. Further investigations are necessary to fully understand the relation between temperature variability, wind speed and direction, the topography, and TSFs. Correspondingly, for the last two studies a detection algorithm was developed which accurately determined the TSF location. This was the first study being able to continuously track a submeso-scale motion. TSFs were frequently occurring within the nocturnal boundary emphasizing their relevance. TSFs consist of two layers which push against each other forcing the TSF up and down the valley side wall in a wave like motion. The warm-air layer is mechanically generated by topographically induced mixing at the plateau-edge, while the cold-air layer is thermo-dynamically driven by topographically induced cold-air drainage. TSFs vanish during strong wind speed and spatially homogeneous wind direction which most likely erodes any cold air. The key to these insights was FODS as we could conditionally average parameters depending on the occurrence and location of TSFs. TSFs impact the boundary layer significantly. During TSFs ergodicity assumptions are invalid as their advective velocity is an order of magnitude lower than the mean wind speed. The mean difference of the sensible heat flux between the air layers of TSFs is 30~Wm$^{-2}$, hence, the impact on turbulence is strong. At the valley bottom the air layers of TSFs are stacked which increases static stability beyond the capability of radiative forcing. Here, the decoupled cold-air layer also invalidates flux-gradient similarity theory. Unfortunately, no distinct forcing for TSFs nor a relation to a wind or thermal regime could be determined. FODS outperformed point observations as even the dense network of the SCP experiment missed TSFs most of the time. So far many submeso scale motions are detected, but their relation, interaction, and needed forcing is not well understood. We need to change from classification schemes using vertical forcing mechanism and focus on the relation between motions on multiple scales. Further, classification schemes and modeling studies need to incorporate the impacts of topography as well as horizontal advection to improve our understanding of the nocturnal boundary layer.
550", "13. Thus, it is essential to not only understand, but also to develop predictive mathematical models which can be used to assess how climate and soil management practices will affect these interactions. Scope: In this paper we review the current developments in structural and chemical imaging of rhizosphere processes within the context of multiscale mathematical image based modeling. We outline areas that need more research and areas which would benefit from more detailed understanding. Conclusions: We conclude that the combination of structural and chemical imaging with modeling is an incredibly powerful tool which is fundamental for understanding how plant roots interact with soil. We emphasize the need for more researchers to be attracted to this area that is so fertile for future discoveries. Finally, model building must go hand in hand with experiments. In particular, there is a real need to integrate rhizosphere structural and chemical imaging with modeling for better understanding of the rhizosphere processes leading to models which explicitly account for pore scale processes.
2. The method used for the creation of these corridors is to allow spontaneous regrowth of native vegetation in areas previously under eucalypt. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on microbial and soil properties for a detailed description of the restoration process of native vegetation in forest soils of the Jequitinhonha Valley. The treatments were represented by an initial restoration stage (< 4 years) with or without remaining eucalypt and the advanced restoration stage (> 4 years) with or without remaining eucalypt, plus the three controls: commercial eucalypt plantation, Cerrado vegetation and native forest. Soil samples were collected for three consecutive years in the dry and rainy season (August and February, respectively). The microbial activity, regardless of the presence of remaining eucalypt , did not differ among the restoration areas, except for the metabolic quotient (qCO2) in the rainy season of February 2007. At this time, this microbial activity was higher in the advanced restoration stage without eucalypt than initial restoration without eucalypt and advanced restoration with eucalypt. The restoration areas, in general, did not differ from the control: eucalypt plantation and Cerrado either. Compared to the forest, the levels of organic C, microbial C, basal respiration (Rbasal) and hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) in the restoration areas were, in general, lower and did not differ in qCO2 and microbial quotient (qMIC). In general, the soil quality was similar in the initial and advanced restoration stages. Most of the soil and microbial properties in the three years indicated that the restoration areas were most similar to the Cerrado. In the advanced restoration areas without eucalypt compared to Cerrado, the lower Rbasal in the 3rd year and the lower FDA and qMIC and higher qCO2 in the 2nd year indicated that the removal of the remaining eucalypt trees was unfavorable for restoration.

microbial biomass", "revegetação espontânea", "Agriculture (General)", "qualidade de solo", "áreas degradadas", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. Land degradation results in the alteration of physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil, thereby posing a serious threat to sustainable agricultural development. In this study, our objective is to evaluate the changes in a Cambisol structure under six land use systems using the load bearing capacity model. Sampling was conducted in Amazonas Region, Brazil, in the following land use: a) young secondary forest; b) old secondary forest; c) forest; d) pasture; e) cropping, and f) agroforestry. To obtain the load bearing capacity models the undisturbed soil samples were collected in those land use systems and subjected to the uniaxial compression test. These models were used to evaluate which land use system preserved or degraded the Cambisol structure. The results of the bulk density and total porosity of the soil samples were not adequate to quantify structural degradation in Cambisol. Using the forest topsoil level (0-0.03 m) as a reference, it was observed that pasture land use system was most severe in the degradation of the soil structure while the structure were most preserved under old secondary forest, cropping system and forest. At the subsoil level (0.10-0.13 m depth), the soil structure was most degraded in the cropping land use system while it was most preserved in young secondary forest and pasture. At the 0.20-0.23 m depth, soil structure degradation was most severe in the old secondary forest system and well preserved in young secondary forest, cropping and agroforestry.

2. However, since the litter is a significant source of recycled nutrients that affect nutrient dynamics in the soil, litter composition may be more strongly correlated with forest growth and development than soil nutrient contents. This study aimed to test this hypothesis by examining correlations between soil C, N, and P; litter C, N, P, lignin content, and polyphenol content; and microbial biomass and activity in pure and mixed second-rotation plantations of Eucalyptus grandis and Acacia mangium before and after senescent leaf drop. The numbers of cultivable fungi and bacteria were also estimated. All properties were correlated with litter C, N, P, lignin and polyphenols, and with soil C and N. We found higher microbial activity (CO2 evolution) in litter than in soil. In the E. grandis monoculture before senescent leaf drop, microbial biomass C was 46 % higher in litter than in soil. After leaf drop, this difference decreased to 16 %. In A. mangium plantations, however, microbial biomass C was lower in litter than in soil both before and after leaf drop. Microbial biomass N of litter was approximately 94 % greater than that of the soil in summer and winter in all plantations. The number of cultivable fungi and bacteria increased after leaf drop, especially so in the litter. Fungi were also more abundant in the E. grandis litter. In general, the A. mangium monoculture was associated with higher levels of litter lignin and N, especially after leaf drop. In contrast, the polyphenol and C levels in E. grandis monoculture litter were higher after leaf drop. These properties were negatively correlated with total soil C and N. Litter in the mixed stands had lower C:N and C:P ratios and higher N, P, and C levels in the microbial biomass. This suggests more effective nutrient cycling in mixed plantations in the long term, greater stimulation of microbial activity in litter and soil, and a more sustainable system in general.

microorganism", "2. Different farm management strategies exist to reduce the impact of mineral fertilization while preserving soil productivity. The aim of this paper is to provide a thorough systemic review of contemporary literature exploring factors and conditions affecting EU farmers￢ﾀﾙ adoption of sustainable farming practices. The specific focus is on widely adopted and empirically explored measures, such as organic farming, manure treatment technologies and manure fertilization, as well as soil and water conservation methods. In total, 23 peer-reviewed studies were extracted by means of Google Scholar covering the time period between 2003 and 2019. The main findings show that farmers￢ﾀﾙ environmental and economic attitudes in addition to their sources of information have a strong effect on the adoption of organic farming, although there is a lack of evidence of their impact on adopting manure treatment and conservation measures. Similarly, farmers￢ﾀﾙ age and education are found to systemically influence organic farming adoption, but not adoption of other reviewed technologies. While other factors, such as farm physical characteristics or technological attributes, may be important determinants of adoption, it is hard to recognize definite patterns of their impact across technologies given a shortage of empirical evidence. More research utilizing standardized surveys and methods of analysis is needed to formulate qualified guidelines and recommendations for policymakers.

2. Therefore, ensuring the wellbeing of bees is a crucial component of fostering sustainability and ecological harmony. The colony collapse disorder (CCD) phenomenon was first reported in 2006 when the majority of bee colonies in Europe died out, due to an increase in infections, contamination of hives with agrochemical pesticides, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Only 6 years after the emergence of CCD, more than 6.5 million premature deaths were reported, as a consequence of persistent human exposure to air pollution. The insect species such as the honey bee Apis mellifera L. and the air matrix inside the beehive can be used as tools in biomonitoring, instead of traditional monitoring methods. This may have advantages in terms of cost-effective bioindicators of the environmental health status, showing the ability to record spatial and temporal pollutant variations. In this study, we present the sustainable in-field usage of the portable membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) instrument for an instant and effective determination of the level of environmental pollution by analytical identification of hive atmosphere volatile organic compound (VOC) contaminants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX) compounds, and pesticides. The samples were taken from hives located in urbanized and rural regions, highlighting variations in contamination. The MIMS results were benchmarked against a conventional laboratory sampling technique, such as GC-MS.

0301 basic medicine", "03 medical and health sciences", "13. Arable lands are one of the sources of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) that are influenced by the chemical and physical properties of the soil and are an essential contributor to climate change. We aim to evaluate the long-term management of agricultural practices, such as different tillage systems, cover crops, and glyphosate, on GHG emissions and soil physical properties. The field trial involved three tillage systems (conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and no-tillage (NT)), along with variations in cover cropping (with and without cover crops) and glyphosate application (with and without glyphosate). These treatments were implemented during the cultivation of oilseed rape in 2022 as part of a cropping sequence consisting of five crops: winter wheat; winter oilseed rape; spring wheat; spring barley; and field pea. Greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)) were directly measured using a closed static chamber system. Through the examination of these management techniques, the soil’s physical properties over the studied period were assessed for their impact on GHG fluxes. The findings of the study reveal that N2O emissions were relatively low during the first month of measurement, with significant differences (p < 0.05) observed in the interaction between cover crop and glyphosate treatments. Additionally, N2O emissions were notably elevated in the reduced (0.079 µg m−2 h−1) and conventional tillage (0.097 µg m−2 h−1) treatments at the second month of measurement. Regarding CH4, increased emissions were observed in the reduced tillage and cover crop treatments. CO2 emissions exhibited variability across all of the investigated treatments. Notably, GHG fluxes spiked at the second measurement, signifying the maximum uptake of nutrients by the main plants during the growth phase. Greenhouse gas emissions leveled off across all of the treatments following the harvest, marking the end of the cultivation period. The influence of the deployed techniques varied across the determined physical parameters of the soil. The incorporation of cover crops contributed to improved water content and, further, to electrical conductivity. Glyphosate use showed no direct impact on physical properties of the soil while the different tillage treatments had varying effects on the distribution of the physical properties of the soil with respect to the degree of disturbance or tillage-induced changes. Additionally, GHG emissions were strongly correlated with precipitation at one week and two weeks before sampling, except for CO2, which showed a weaker correlation at two weeks before GHG sampling. The findings indicate that reduced and conventional tillage methods might adversely affect greenhouse gas emissions and plant functionality, particularly concerning nutrient release and uptake, especially in temperate climate conditions.

2. We propose that a sustainability framework for biochar could be adapted from existing frameworks developed for bioenergy. Sustainable land use policies, combined with effective regulation of biochar production facilities and incentives for efficient utilization of energy, and improved knowledge of biochar impacts on ecosystem health and productivity could provide a strong framework for the development of a robust sustainable biochar industry.
