Despite its importance, measuring the SWRC using standard laboratory methods is challenging and time-consuming. This paper presents a novel physics-informed neural network (PINN) approach for developing pedotransfer functions (PTFs) to predict continuous SWRCs based on soil texture, organic carbon content, and dry bulk density. In contrast to conventional parametric PTFs developed for specific SWRC models, the PINN learns a non-specific form of the SWRC by effectively integrating both measurements and physical constraints into the training process. This approach allows the estimated SWRC to maintain its physical integrity from saturation to oven-dry conditions, even in scenarios with sparse data. The new approach is particularly effective for tackling the challenges encountered in developing PTFs on large SWRC datasets, which often have an imbalance towards the wet-end and include numerous samples with limited and unevenly distributed measurements. We compared the performance of the PINN with that of a conventional physics-agnostic neural network using a dataset of 4200 soil samples. While both networks performed similarly at the wet-end where data are abundant, the PINN excelled at the dry-end where data are sparse and unevenly distributed, achieving a normalized RMSE of 0.172 compared to 0.522 for the conventional neural network. Although several automated devices have been developed, most designs include an elongated water reservoir and a pressure transducer with electronic components to register the water level, increasing its cost and limiting its application. The objective of this work is to present a new tension disc infiltrometer with a compact design of 10 cm diameter and height, where the water level is monitored by a smartphone camera. The infiltration curve is determined from the automated analysis of the images recorded by the smartphone without additional electronic components. The device was first validated in the laboratory by comparing visual measurements (V), the camera imagery (Ca) and a pressure transducer (PT). Next, it was tested on field infiltration experiments. Robust fits (R2 = 0.99) were found between the water level measured with Ca in the laboratory and those obtained with V and PT procedures. The Ca method is accurate, robust and independent of the relative camera position. Good fits were also observed between Ca water level and those obtained with PT in the field experiments. Similar hydraulic conductivity and sorptivity values were obtained with both sensors using the numerical solution of the Haverkamp (NSH) equation. The compact infiltrometer, in conjunction with the smartphone camera, is an accurate, accessible, portable and easy-to-use field-based device for soil hydraulic characterisation. In recent years, proximal sensing methods have shown great potential for retrieving this challenging-to-measure property from spectral reflectance. However, a physically-based approach is still lacking as current methods rely on empirical data-driven algorithms. Here we propose a novel physics-based laboratory method that, for the first time, enables direct estimation of the entire SWRC from saturated to dry using soil water content/reflectance data pairs within the shortwave infrared domain. The main hypothesis underlying the new method is that soil optical properties not only vary with soil water content but also with the pore scale distribution of capillary and adsorbed soil water. For evaluation, retrieved soil water retention curves of 21 soils that vastly differ in physical and hydraulic properties were compared to direct measurements. The factor includes the information on permeability in the equation, however, most definitions of the K factor consider the soil hydrological influence only very crudely and indirectly. Thus, the direct impact of surface runoff infiltration and drainage on soil erosion is largely neglected. The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties in the K factor map by merging available global-scale measured saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) data with soil texture and organic carbon information into a modified K factor. To achieve this, the Wischmeier and Smith (1978) soil texture- and permeability-based equation (KWischmeier factor) was modified to include Ksat, called Kksat factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, the KWischmeier factor and the Kksat factor were each correlated with soil and remote sensing covariates for spatial extrapolation of two independent K factor maps at 1\u00a0km spatial resolution. We noted a clear decrease in the mean value of the Kksat factor (0.023\u00a0t\u00a0ha\u00a0h\u00a0ha-1\u00a0MJ-1\u00a0mm-1) compared to the mean value of the KWischmeier factor (0.027\u00a0t\u00a0ha\u00a0h\u00a0ha-1\u00a0MJ-1\u00a0mm-1). The reduction in Kksat factor values was most pronounced in tropical regions reflecting the difference in soil properties (e.g., clay and iron), whereas other climate regions showed relatively minor changes in comparison to the KWischmeier factor as well as to the recent global modeling of Borrelli et al. (2017) (KGloSEM factor maps). As many studies discussed an overall overestimation of (R)USLE based erosion rates compared to measurements, this reduction in the K factor might improve modeled erosion rates in the right direction. In the present communication, the effect of different tillage management viz., conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT) and zero-tillage (ZT) and different crop rotations viz. [(soybean\u2013wheat (S\u2013W), soybean\u2013lentil (S\u2013L) and soybean\u2013pea (S\u2013P)] on pore size distribution and soil hydraulic conductivities [saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K  sat ) and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity { k ( h )}] of a sandy clay loam soil was studied after 4 years prior to the experiment. Soil cores were collected after 4 year of the experiment at an interval of 75\u00a0mm up to 300\u00a0mm soil depth for measuring soil bulk density, soil water retention constant ( b ), pore size distribution,  K  sat  and  k ( h ). Nine pressure levels (from 2 to 1500\u00a0kPa) were used to calculate pore size distribution and  k ( h ). It was observed that b values at all the studied soil depths were higher under ZT than those observed under CT irrespective of the crop rotations. The values of soil bulk density observed under ZT were higher in 0\u201375\u00a0mm soil depth in all the crop rotations. But, among the crop rotations, soils under S\u2013P and S\u2013L rotations showed relatively lower bulk density values than S\u2013W rotation. Average values of the volume fraction of total porosity with pores  3 \u00a0m \u22123  under CT, MT and ZT; and 0.592, 0.610 and 0.626\u00a0m 3 \u00a0m \u22123  under S\u2013W, S\u2013L and S\u2013P, respectively. In contrast, the average values of the volume fraction of total porosity with pores >150\u00a0\u03bcm in diameter (pores draining freely with gravity) were 0.124, 0.096 and 0.095\u00a0m 3 \u00a0m \u22123  under CT, MT and ZT; and 0.110, 0.104 and 0.101\u00a0m 3 \u00a0m \u22123  under S\u2013W, S\u2013L and S\u2013P, respectively. Saturated hydraulic conductivity values in all the studied soil depths were significantly greater under ZT than those under CT (range from 300 to 344\u00a0mm\u00a0day \u22121 ). Roots affect the hydro-mechanical and chemical properties of soils at different scales. In this regard, the paper focuses on studying the macroscopic hydraulic properties of root-permeated and compacted soils considering microstructural features coming from mercury intrusion porosimetry and X-ray micro-tomography. The results are interpreted bearing in mind the influence of the different soil hydraulic states on roots structure and physiology. The analysis of the results shows that roots growing in a compacted soil at low stresses are opening fissures while decreasing micropore volume inside aggregates due to chemical effects. However, a full understanding of the general pattern of ecosystem belowground processes in response to soil acidification due to the impacting factors remains elusive. We conducted a meta-analysis of soil acidification impacts on belowground functions using 304 observations from 49 independent studies, mainly including soil cations, soil nutrient, respiration, root and microbial biomass. Our results show that acid addition significantly reduced soil pH by 0.24 on average, with less pH decrease in forest than non-forest ecosystems. The response ratio of soil pH was positively correlated with site precipitation and temperature, but negatively with initial soil pH. Soil base cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+) decreased while non-base cations (Al3+, Fe3+) increased with soil acidification. Soil respiration, fine root biomass, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen were significantly reduced by 14.7%, 19.1%, 9.6% and 12.1%, respectively, under acid addition. These indicate that soil carbon processes are sensitive to soil acidification. Overall, our meta-analysis suggests a strong negative impact of soil acidification on belowground functions, with the potential to suppress soil carbon emission. This study aimed at examining the effects of long-term application of chicken manure (CM) and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) on organic matter accumulation, acidity, and hydraulic properties of soil. Two podzol soils with sandy texture in Podlasie Region (Poland) were enriched with recycled CM (10 Mg ha\u22121) and SMS (20 Mg ha\u22121), respectively, every 1\u20132 years for 20 years. The application of CM and SMS increased soil organic matter content at the depths of 0\u201320, 20\u201340, and 40\u201360 cm, especially at 0\u201320 cm (by 102\u2013201%). The initial soil pH increased in the CM- and SMS-amended soil by 1.7\u20132.0 units and 1.0\u20131.2 units, respectively. Soil bulk density at comparable depths increased and decreased following the addition of CM and SMS, respectively. The addition of CM increased field water capacity (at \u2013100 hPa) in the range from 45.8 to 117.8% depending on the depth within the 0\u201360 cm layer. In the case of the SMS addition, the value of the parameter was in the range of 42.4\u201348.5% at two depths within 0\u201340 cm. Depending on the depth, CM reduced the content of transmission pores (&gt;50 \u00b5m) in the range from 46.3 to 82.3% and increased the level of residual pores (&lt;0.5 \u00b5m) by 91.0\u2013198.6%. SMS increased the content of residual pores at the successive depths by 121.8, 251.0, and 30.3% and decreased or increased the content of transmission and storage pores. Additionally, it significantly reduced the saturated hydraulic conductivity at two depths within 0\u201340 cm. The fitted unsaturated hydraulic conductivity at two depths within the 0\u201340 cm layer increased and decreased in the CM- and SMS-amended soils, respectively. The results provide a novel insight into the application of recycled organic materials to sequester soil organic matter and improve crop productivity by increasing soil water retention capacity and decreasing acidity. Despite its importance, measuring the SWRC using standard laboratory methods is challenging and time-consuming. This paper presents a novel physics-informed neural network (PINN) approach for developing pedotransfer functions (PTFs) to predict continuous SWRCs based on soil texture, organic carbon content, and dry bulk density. In contrast to conventional parametric PTFs developed for specific SWRC models, the PINN learns a non-specific form of the SWRC by effectively integrating both measurements and physical constraints into the training process. This approach allows the estimated SWRC to maintain its physical integrity from saturation to oven-dry conditions, even in scenarios with sparse data. The new approach is particularly effective for tackling the challenges encountered in developing PTFs on large SWRC datasets, which often have an imbalance towards the wet-end and include numerous samples with limited and unevenly distributed measurements. We compared the performance of the PINN with that of a conventional physics-agnostic neural network using a dataset of 4200 soil samples. While both networks performed similarly at the wet-end where data are abundant, the PINN excelled at the dry-end where data are sparse and unevenly distributed, achieving a normalized RMSE of 0.172 compared to 0.522 for the conventional neural network. The factor includes the information on permeability in the equation, however, most definitions of the K factor consider the soil hydrological influence only very crudely and indirectly. Thus, the direct impact of surface runoff infiltration and drainage on soil erosion is largely neglected. The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties in the K factor map by merging available global-scale measured saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) data with soil texture and organic carbon information into a modified K factor. To achieve this, the Wischmeier and Smith (1978) soil texture- and permeability-based equation (KWischmeier factor) was modified to include Ksat, called Kksat factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, the KWischmeier factor and the Kksat factor were each correlated with soil and remote sensing covariates for spatial extrapolation of two independent K factor maps at 1\u00a0km spatial resolution. We noted a clear decrease in the mean value of the Kksat factor (0.023\u00a0t\u00a0ha\u00a0h\u00a0ha-1\u00a0MJ-1\u00a0mm-1) compared to the mean value of the KWischmeier factor (0.027\u00a0t\u00a0ha\u00a0h\u00a0ha-1\u00a0MJ-1\u00a0mm-1). The reduction in Kksat factor values was most pronounced in tropical regions reflecting the difference in soil properties (e.g., clay and iron), whereas other climate regions showed relatively minor changes in comparison to the KWischmeier factor as well as to the recent global modeling of Borrelli et al. (2017) (KGloSEM factor maps). As many studies discussed an overall overestimation of (R)USLE based erosion rates compared to measurements, this reduction in the K factor might improve modeled erosion rates in the right direction. Hydro-pedotransfer functions\u00a0(PTFs) relate easy-to-measure and readily available soil information to soil hydraulic properties\u00a0(SHPs) for applications in a wide range of process-based and empirical models, thereby enabling the assessment of soil hydraulic effects on hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes. At least more than 4 decades of research have been invested to derive such relationships. However, while models, methods, data storage capacity, and computational efficiency have advanced, there are fundamental concerns related to the scope and adequacy of current PTFs, particularly when applied to parameterise models used at the field scale and beyond. Most of the PTF development process has focused on refining and advancing the regression methods, while fundamental aspects have remained largely unconsidered. Most soil systems are not represented in PTFs, which have been built mostly for agricultural soils in temperate climates. Thus, existing PTFs largely ignore how parent material, vegetation, land use, and climate affect processes that shape SHPs. The PTFs used to parameterise the Richards\u2013Richardson equation are mostly limited to predicting parameters of the van\u00a0Genuchten\u2013Mualem soil hydraulic functions, despite sufficient evidence demonstrating their shortcomings. Another fundamental issue relates to the diverging scales of derivation and application, whereby PTFs are derived based on laboratory measurements while often being applied at the field to regional scales. Scaling, modulation, and constraining strategies exist to alleviate some of these shortcomings in the mismatch between scales. These aspects are addressed here in a joint effort by the members of the International Soil Modelling Consortium\u00a0(ISMC) Pedotransfer Functions Working Group with the aim of systematising PTF research and providing a roadmap guiding both PTF development and use. Especially under wet soil conditions, when soil is susceptible to compaction, heavy wheel load field traffic can lead to harmful soil compaction. This data set contains soil data from a wheeling experiment with an agricultural vehicle (2-axle combine harvester with bunker; total weight: 17 t). The experiment was conducted in 2016 on an agricultural test field in Adenstedt (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony, Germany) during the harvest campaign. The soil type is Stagnic Luvisol derived from Loess and was conventionally tilled with a plough up to a depth of 28 cm. The cultivated crop was winter wheat. For the wheeling experiment, a combine harvester with full bunker volume passed defined plots in the field. In the inner field area, the number of wheel passes were 2 and in the headlands the number of wheel passes were 6. The sampling sites were both located in the inner field area and in the headlands. To investigate changes in soil physical parameters, soil structure, and soil functions caused by combine harvester driving, undisturbed soil cores (100 cm\u00b3) were taken before (unwheeled) and after wheeling (wheeled). The unwheeled soil samples were taken in 22, 35, and 50 depth and the wheeled soil samples in 20, 35, and 50 cm depth. In the inner field area, two soil pits were sampled per wheeling variant and in the headlands, one soil pit was sampled per wheeling variant. Additionally, the soil biopores were counted in every one of the three soil depths. A total of 30 undisturbed soil samples were taken per each soil pit, 10 per each soil depth.5 of the 10 undisturbed sampling rings were used to investigate soil water retention and the other 5 for saturated hydraulic conductivity. The determination of pF values was conducted in the soil laboratory using sand and clay boxes as well as pressure pots according to DIN ISO 11274. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was analyzed using a soil water permeameter (open system) according to ISO / FDIS 17312. However, its content in cultivated soils is low and often decreases. This study aimed at examining the effects of long-term application of chicken manure (CM) and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) on organic matter accumulation, acidity, and hydraulic properties of soil. Two podzol soils with sandy texture in Podlasie Region (Poland) were enriched with recycled CM (10 Mg ha\u22121) and SMS (20 Mg ha\u22121), respectively, every 1\u20132 years for 20 years. The application of CM and SMS increased soil organic matter content at the depths of 0\u201320, 20\u201340, and 40\u201360 cm, especially at 0\u201320 cm (by 102\u2013201%). The initial soil pH increased in the CM- and SMS-amended soil by 1.7\u20132.0 units and 1.0\u20131.2 units, respectively. Soil bulk density at comparable depths increased and decreased following the addition of CM and SMS, respectively. The addition of CM increased field water capacity (at \u2013100 hPa) in the range from 45.8 to 117.8% depending on the depth within the 0\u201360 cm layer. In the case of the SMS addition, the value of the parameter was in the range of 42.4\u201348.5% at two depths within 0\u201340 cm. Depending on the depth, CM reduced the content of transmission pores (&gt;50 \u00b5m) in the range from 46.3 to 82.3% and increased the level of residual pores (&lt;0.5 \u00b5m) by 91.0\u2013198.6%. SMS increased the content of residual pores at the successive depths by 121.8, 251.0, and 30.3% and decreased or increased the content of transmission and storage pores. Additionally, it significantly reduced the saturated hydraulic conductivity at two depths within 0\u201340 cm. The fitted unsaturated hydraulic conductivity at two depths within the 0\u201340 cm layer increased and decreased in the CM- and SMS-amended soils, respectively. The results provide a novel insight into the application of recycled organic materials to sequester soil organic matter and improve crop productivity by increasing soil water retention capacity and decreasing acidity. This is of particular importance in the case of the studied low-productivity sandy acidic soils that have to be used in agriculture due to limited global land resources and rising food demand.</p></article>", "keywords": ["2. Especially under wet soil conditions, when soil is susceptible to compaction, heavy wheel load field traffic can lead to harmful soil compaction. This data set contains soil data from a wheeling experiment with an agricultural vehicle (3-axle sugar beet harvester). The experiment was conducted in 2016 on an agricultural test field in Adenstedt (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony, Germany). The soil type is Stagnic Luvisol derived from Loess and was tilled with a cultivator up to a depth of 25 cm (reduced tillage). For the wheeling experiment, the harvester passed defined plots in the field with a full bunker (total weight: 62 t) and a half full bunker (total weight: 49 t). Maximum soil pressure and plastic soil deformation evoked by harvester passing was measured simultaneously with a multi-channel device consisting of Bolling probes (Bolling, 1987) and hydrostatic measuring hoses (Nolting et al., 2006). Maximum soil pressure and plastic soil deformation was measured in 20, 35, and 50 cm depth directly below the center of the tires. Four soil monoliths were sampled along a Btg-CBkg horizon boundary of an Eroded Haplic Luvisol (monoliths: e_ha_LV_1, e_ha_LV_2) and a CBkg-sand lense boundary of a Haplic Regosol (monoliths: ha_RG_3, ha_RG_4). The monoliths were placed under a rainfall simulator in the laboratory and 12 tensiometers and 6 FDR-sensors to measure soil matric potential and soil water content were installed in the upper and lower horizon. Especially under wet soil conditions, when soil is susceptible to compaction, heavy wheel load field traffic can lead to harmful soil compaction. This data set contains soil data from a wheeling experiment with agricultural vehicles from the silage maize harvest chain (maize chopper (total weight: ~20 t), tractor with mulcher (total weight: ~12 t), and tractor with silage trailer (total weight: ~32 t)). The experiment was conducted in 2017 on an agricultural test field in Adenstedt (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony, Germany). The soil type is Stagnic Luvisol derived from Loess and was tilled with a cultivator up to a depth of 25 cm (reduced tillage). For the wheeling experiment, the harvest chain vehicles passed defined plots in the inner field area one after another (8 wheel passes). Maximum soil pressure und plastic soil deformation evoked by vehicle passing was measured simultaneously with a multi-channel device consisting of Bolling probes (Bolling, 1987) and hydrostatic measuring hoses (Nolting et al., 2006). Maximum soil pressure and plastic soil deformation was measured in 20, 35, and 50 cm depth directly below the center of the tires. To investigate changes in soil physical parameters, soil structure, and soil functions caused by harvest chain vehicles driving, undisturbed soil cores (100 cm\u00b3) were taken before (unwheeled) and after wheeling (wheeled). The sampling sites were located in the inner field area. Two soil pits were sampled per wheeling variant. A total of 30 undisturbed soil samples were taken per each soil pit, 10 per each soil depth (20, 35, 50 cm). The soil biopores were counted in every one of the three soil depths. 5 of the 10 undisturbed sampling rings were used to investigate soil water retention and the other 5 for saturated hydraulic conductivity. The determination of pF values was conducted in the soil laboratory using sand and clay boxes as well as pressure pots according to DIN ISO 11274. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was analyzed using a soil water permeameter (open system) according to ISO / FDIS 17312. Two podzol soils with sandy texture in Podlasie Region (Poland) were enriched with recycled CM (10 Mg ha\udbc0\udc001) and SMS (20 Mg ha\udbc0\udc001), respectively, every 1\u20132 years for 20 years. The application of CM and SMS increased soil organic matter content at the depths of 0\u201320, 20\u201340, and 40\u201360 cm, especially at 0\u201320 cm (by 102\u2013201%). The initial soil pH increased in the CM- and SMS-amended soil by 1.7\u20132.0 units and 1.0\u20131.2 units, respectively. Soil bulk density at comparable depths increased and decreased following the addition of CM and SMS, respectively. The addition of CM increased field water capacity (at \u2013100 hPa) in the range from 45.8 to 117.8% depending on the depth within the 0\u201360 cm layer. In the case of the SMS addition, the value of the parameter was in the range of 42.4\u201348.5% at two depths within 0\u201340 cm. Depending on the depth, CM reduced the content of transmission pores (>50 m) in the range from 46.3 to 82.3% and increased the level of residual pores (<0.5 m) by 91.0\u2013198.6%. SMS increased the content of residual pores at the successive depths by 121.8, 251.0, and 30.3% and decreased or increased the content of transmission and storage pores.
