This list was compiled based on the requirements of the diagnostic approach and the preferences of Work Package 3 for soil function modeling procedure. The list contains four categories of attributes: 5. “Soil horizon attributes” required to successfully derive diagnostic horizons/properties/materials and qualifiers;6. “Soil attributes” which contain physical/chemical/biological and other derived attributes;7. “Environmental attributes” which contain attributes needed to characterize of the surroundings of the soils (eg.: topography, climatic properties);8. “Management attributes” which contain attributes regarding to management practices (eg.: irrigation, manuring, fertilization, pest control, weed management, grassland management, mechanization). The LANDMARK proposal builds on the concept that soils are a finite resource that provides a range of ecosystem services known as “soil functions”. Functions relating to agriculture include: primary productivity, water regulation purification, carbon-sequestration regulation, habitat for biodiversity and nutrient provision cycling. Tradeoffs between these functions may occur: for example, management aimed at maximising primary production may inadvertently affect the ‘water purification’ or ‘habitat’ functions. This has led to conflicting management recommendations and policy initiatives. There is now an urgent need to develop a coherent scientific and practical framework for the sustainable management of soils. LANDMARK will uniquely respond to the breadth of this challenge by delivering (through multi-actor development): 1. LOCAL SCALE: A toolkit for farmers with cost-effective, practical measures for sustainable (and context specific) soil management.2. REGIONAL SCALE - A blueprint for a soil monitoring scheme, using harmonised indicators: this will facilitate the assessment of soil functions for different soil types and land-uses for all major EU climatic zones.3. It contains the following shapefile: PO1_GAEC5.shp The shapefile gives an estimation of the change in soil function performance across the EU in agricultural soils after implementation of the GAEC5 under the proposed CAP. This spatial variation is represented in change in z-scores compared to the current supply on a NUTS1 level. To implement the scenario, for each crop within each environmental zone the 20% area with the lowest values of the N Cycling indicator are selected from the current SF supply map and this indicator is increased to the lowest values in the other 80% of the same crop – environmental zone combination. In a second step, for each crop within each environmental zone the 20% area with the lowest values of the water purification indicator from the current SF supply map are selected and this indicator is increased to the lowest values in the other 80% of the crop – environmental zone combination, while maintaining the N Cycling improvements. This simulates potential improvements in both N Cycling and water purification due to the implementation of the Farm Sustainability Tool for Nutrients (GAEC 5) Z-scores are calculated from the spatial SF maps for each of the NUTS1 zones. The z-scores give the signed fractional number of standard deviations by which SF means for a NUTS1 zone are above or below the mean value and allow us indicate which areas have a higher or lower soil function performance compared to the mean value. Z-scores from the current SF maps and scenario maps were then compared to each other to calculate the change in z-scores. This change in z-scores is given in the shapefiles and describes the relative change in soil function performance. Positive values indicate an improvement in soil functioning compared to the current situation, negative values a decrease. This study was conducted to determine the in situ effect of incorporating biochar, into soil, on N2O emissions from bovine urine patches and associated pasture uptake of N. The effects of biochar rate (0￢ﾀﾓ30 t ha￢ﾈﾒ1), following soil incorporation, were investigated on ruminant urine￢ﾀﾐderived N2O fluxes, N uptake by pasture, and pasture yield. During an 86￢ﾀﾐd spring￢ﾀﾐsummer period, where irrigation and rainfall occurred, the N2O fluxes from 15N labeled ruminant urine patches were reduced by >50%, after incorporating 30 t ha￢ﾈﾒ1 of biochar. Taking into account the N2O emissions from the control plots, 30 t ha￢ﾈﾒ1 of biochar reduced the N2O emission factor from urine by 70%. The atom% 15N enrichment of the N2O emitted was lower in the 30 t ha￢ﾈﾒ1 biochar treatment, indicating less urine￢ﾀﾐN contributed to the N2O flux. Soil NO3￢ﾈﾒ￢ﾀﾐN concentrations were lower with increasing biochar rate during the first 30 d following urine deposition. No differences occurred, due to biochar addition, with respect to dry matter yields, herbage N content, or recovery of 15N applied in herbage. Incorporating biochar into the soil can significantly diminish ruminant urine￢ﾀﾐderived N2O emissions. Further work is required to determine the persistence of the observed effect and to fully understand the mechanism(s) of the observed reduction in N2O fluxes.

bovine urine", "550", "Nitrogen", "Nitrous Oxide", "Urine", "Soil", "ANZSRC::0702 Animal Production", "ANZSRC::0503 Soil Sciences", "Animals", "Humans", "biochar", "Weather", "2. Although major progress in soil models has occurred in the last decades, models of soil processes remain disjointed between disciplines or ecosystem services, with considerable uncertainty remaining in the quality of predictions and several challenges that remain yet to be addressed. First, there is a need to improve exchange of knowledge and experience among the different disciplines in soil science and to reach out to other Earth science communities. Second, the community needs to develop a new generation of soil models based on a systemic approach comprising relevant physical, chemical, and biological processes to address critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of soil processes and their interactions. Overcoming these challenges will facilitate exchanges between soil modeling and climate, plant, and social science modeling communities. It will allow us to contribute to preserve and improve our assessment of ecosystem services and advance our understanding of climate￢ﾀﾐchange feedback mechanisms, among others, thereby facilitating and strengthening communication among scientific disciplines and society. We review the role of modeling soil processes in quantifying key soil processes that shape ecosystem services, with a focus on provisioning and regulating services. We then identify key challenges in modeling soil processes, including the systematic incorporation of heterogeneity and uncertainty, the integration of data and models, and strategies for effective integration of knowledge on physical, chemical, and biological soil processes. We discuss how the soil modeling community could best interface with modern modeling activities in other disciplines, such as climate, ecology, and plant research, and how to weave novel observation and measurement techniques into soil models. We propose the establishment of an international soil modeling consortium to coherently advance soil modeling activities and foster communication with other Earth science disciplines. Such a consortium should promote soil modeling platforms and data repository for model development, calibration and intercomparison essential for addressing contemporary challenges.</p
organic-matter dynamics", "550", "QH301 Biology", "0208 environmental biotechnology", "SATURATED-UNSATURATED FLOW", "02 engineering and technology", "soil processes", "01 natural sciences", "Physical Geography and Environmental Geoscience", "Sciences de la Terre", "ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI", "sciences du sol", "ANZSRC::3707 Hydrology", "SYNTHETIC-APERTURE RADAR", "ANZSRC::4106 Soil sciences", "SDG 13 - Climate Action", "2. This approach reduced soil moisture by 13% and water potential by 0.14 MPa (from -0.2 to -0.34). Previous results from this experiment have demonstrated that the diversity and composition of these soil microbial communities are sensitive to even small changes in soil water. Here, we show prolonged drought significantly alters the functional potential of the community and provokes a clear osmotic stress response, including the production of compatible solutes that increase intracellular C demand. Subsequently, a microbial population emerges with a greater capacity for extracellular enzyme production targeting macromolecular carbon. Significantly, some of these drought-induced functional shifts in the soil microbiota are attenuated by prior exposure to a short-term drought suggesting that acclimation may occur despite a lack of longer-term drought history.
tropical forests", "0301 basic medicine", "2. This paper presents a time-lapse application of electrical methods (electrical resistivity tomography, ERT; and mise-ￃﾠ-la-masse, MALM) for monitoring plant roots and their activity (root water uptake) during a controlled infiltration experiment. The use of non-invasive geophysical monitoring is of increasing interest as these techniques provide time-lapse imaging of processes that otherwise can only be measured at few specific spatial locations. The experiment here described was conducted in a vineyard in Bordeaux (France) and was focused on the behaviour of two neighbouring grapevines. The joint application of ERT and MALM has several advantages. While ERT in time-lapse mode is sensitive to changes in soil electrical resistivity and thus to the factors controlling it (mainly soil water content, in this context), MALM uses DC current injected into a tree stem to image where the plant root system is in effective electrical contact with the soil at locations that are likely to be the same where root water uptake (RWU) takes place. Thus, ERT and MALM provide complementary information about the root structure and activity. The experiment shows that the region of likely electrical current sources produced by MALM does not change significantly during the infiltration time in spite of the strong changes of electrical resistivity caused by changes in soil water content. Ultimately, the interpretation of the current source distribution strengthened the hypothesis of using current as a proxy for root detection. This fact, together with the evidence that current injection in the soil and in the stem produces totally different voltage patterns, corroborates the idea that this application of MALM highlights the active root density in the soil. When considering the electrical resistivity changes (as measured by ERT) inside the stationary volume of active roots delineated by MALM, the overall tendency is towards a resistivity increase during irrigation time, which can be linked to a decrease in soil water content caused by root water uptake. On the contrary, when considering the soil volume outside the MALM-derived root water uptake region, the electrical resistivity tends to decrease as an effect of soil water content increase caused by the infiltration. The use of a simplified infiltration model confirms at least qualitatively this behaviour. The monitoring results are particularly promising, and the method can be applied to a variety of scales including the laboratory scale where direct evidence of root structure and root water uptake can help corroborate the approach. Once fully validated, the joint use of MALM and ERT can be used as a valuable tool to study the activity of roots under a wide variety of field conditions.

2. Adopting soil and crop management practices that conserve or enhance soil structure is critical for supporting the sustainable adaptation of agriculture to climate change, as it should help maintain agricultural production in the face of increasing drought or water excess without impairing environmental quality. In this paper, we evaluate the evidence for this assertion by synthesizing the results of 34 published meta-analyses of the effects of such practices on soil physical and hydraulic properties relevant for climate change adaptation in European agriculture. We also review an additional 127 meta-analyses that investigated synergies and trade-offs or help to explain the effects of soil and crop management in terms of the underlying processes and mechanisms. Finally, we identify how responses to alternative soil–crop management systems vary under contrasting agro-environmental conditions across Europe. This information may help practitioners and policymakers to draw context-specific conclusions concerning the efficacy of management practices as climate adaptation tools. Our synthesis demonstrates that organic soil amendments and the adoption of practices that maintain “continuous living cover” result in significant benefits for the water regulation function of soils, mostly arising from the additional carbon inputs to soil and the stimulation of biological processes. These effects are clearly related to improved soil aggregation and enhanced bio-porosity, both of which reduce surface runoff and increase infiltration. One potentially negative consequence of these systems is a reduction in soil water storage and groundwater recharge, which may be problematic in dry climates. Some important synergies are reductions in nitrate leaching to groundwater and greenhouse gas emissions for nonleguminous cover crop systems. The benefits of reducing tillage intensity appear much less clear-cut. Increases in soil bulk density due to traffic compaction are commonly reported. However, biological activity is enhanced under reduced tillage intensity, which should improve soil structure and infiltration capacity and reduce surface runoff and the losses of agro-chemicals to surface water. However, the evidence for these beneficial effects is inconclusive, while significant trade-offs include yield penalties and increases in greenhouse gas emissions and the risks of leaching of pesticides and nitrate. Our synthesis also highlights important knowledge gaps on the effects of management practices on root growth and transpiration. Thus, conclusions related to the impacts of management on the crop water supply and other water regulation functions are necessarily based on inferences derived from proxy variables. Based on these knowledge gaps, we outlined several key avenues for future research on this topic.

550", "Soil Science", "N2O EMISSIONS", "ECOSYSTEM SERVICES", "COVER CROPS", "12. Effects of agricultural management practices (tillage, cover crops, amendment, &#8230;) on soil variables (hydraulic conductivity, aggregate stability, &#8230;) often vary according to pedo-climatic conditions. Hence, it is important to take these conditions into account in quantitative evidence synthesis. Extracting structured information from scientific publications to build large databases with experimental data from various conditions is an effective way to do this. This database can then serve to explain, and possibly also to predict, the effect of management practices in different pedo-climatic contexts.</p><p>However, manually building such a database by going through all publications is tedious. And given the increasing amount of literature, this task is likely to require more and more effort in the future. Natural language processing facilitates this task.&#160; In this work, we built a database of near-saturated hydraulic conductivity from tension-disk infiltrometer measurements from scientific publications. We used tailored regular expressions and dictionaries to extract coordinates, soil texture, soil type, rainfall, disk diameter and tensions applied. The overal results have an F1-score ranging from 0.72 to 0.91.</p><p>In addition, we extracted relationships between a set of driver keywords (e.g. &#8216;biochar&#8217;, &#8216;zero tillage&#8217;, &#8230;) and variables (e.g. &#8216;soil aggregate&#8217;, &#8216;hydraulic conductivity&#8217;, &#8230;) from publication abstracts based on the shortest dependency path between them. The relationships were further classified according to positive, negative or absent correlations between the driver and variable. This technique quickly provides an overview of the different driver-variable relationships and their abundance for an entire body of literature. For instance, we were able to recover the positive correlation between biochar and yield, as well as its negative correlation with bulk density.</p>

2. soils"
The exchange of carbon between the soil and the atmosphere is an important factor in climate change. Soil organic carbon (SOC) storage is sensitive to land management, soil properties, and climatic conditions, and these data serve as key inputs to computer models projecting SOC change. Farmland has been identified as a sink for atmospheric carbon, and we have previously estimated the potential for SOC sequestration in agricultural soils in Vermont, USA using the Rothamsted Carbon Model. However, fine spatial-scale (high granularity) input data are not always available, which can limit the skill of SOC projections. For example, climate projections are often only available at scales of 10s to 100s of km2. To overcome this, we use a climate projection dataset downscaled to <1 km2 (~18,000 cells). We compare SOC from runs forced by high granularity input data to runs forced by aggregated data averaged over the 11,690 km2 study region. We spin up and run the model individually for each cell in the fine-scale runs and for the region in the aggregated runs factorially over three agricultural land uses and four Global Climate Models. In this repository are the downscaled climate input data that drive the RothC model, as well as the model outputs for each GCM.
FOS: Computer and The maps refer to the topsoils (0–30 cm) with a spatial resolution of 100⨯100 m. The uncertainty associated with the SOC property maps is expressed by the lower and upper limits of the 90% prediction interval (PI), the range of values within which the true value is expected to occur 9 times out of 10. This means that there are two maps to each SOC property map, quantifying its prediction uncertainty. It should be added that all maps have been masked with open water bodies, as these areas are not relevant for soils. Understanding these factors is essential for promoting sustainable management practices. Therefore, STs and SESs require to be assessed using explicit and appropriate methodologies. Indicators are suitable communications tools with stakeholders and the general public because they facilitate the simplification of complex human-environmental systems and provide aggregated information on certain phenomena at the spatial and temporal scale that they represent. Task 2.3 of the SERENA project was aimed at developing harmonised methodologies to evaluate bundles of soil threats (STs) and soil-based ecosystem services (SESs) at different levels. The Deliverable 2.3.1 developed the second step of the harmonization of STs and SESs indicators, whereas this deliverable developed the third step of the global tiered strategy for harmonisation and was mainly focused on the definition of methods for the harmonised assessment of indicators of STs and SESs at the member state (MS) level. The deliverable was focused on soil erosion (ST) and soil erosion control (SES), soil organic carbon (SOC) loss (ST), greenhouse gas (GHG) and climate regulation (SES), and soil sealing (ST) as well as a bundle of STs/SESs. Different cookbooks were developed to provide harmonized approaches/methods for assessing indicators for STs/SESs at national scale.
