This is particularly true for agroecosystems, which are pivotal to ensure sustainable land planning, ecological management and food security strategies. Soils are key providers of multiple ecosystem services (ES) in agroecosystems but they are very sensitive to global drivers such as changes in climate, land use and cover. How agroecosystems should achieve sustainability, through optimizing soil capacity to supply ES while limiting the occurrence of threats, is a priority of EU policy agendas. Nevertheless, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive framework of scenario-based approaches to assess changes in soil ES (SES) and soil threats (ST). As a part of the project SERENA funded by the European Joint Program on Agricultural Soil Management, this study aims to: i) understand how drivers of global change are commonly studied in the scientific literature; ii) identify how some SES and ST are assessed in scenario-based approaches; iii) provide a preliminary discussion on how soil properties are represented in these approaches. Through a systematic review of 230 published articles related to seven SES and ten ST, this study highlights that not all SES and ST are considered with the same frequency and geographic distribution in scenario-based approaches. Despite a great methodological variability in the assessment and mapping of SES and ST, dominant methodological trends can be identified. SES are mapped more frequently than ST and, specific SES appear more disposed to spatially explicit assessments than others. Due to its novelty and complexity, research on this topic is limited to a small subset of ST or SES and projections of the combined impacts of climate, land use and management changes on multiple ST and SES should be a scientific priority to help policy makers.
Conservation of Natural Resources", "550", "Scenario-based", "[SDE.MCG]Environmental Sciences/Global Changes", "Climate Change", "Agriculture", "333", "Soil ecosystem services", "Soil ecosystem services", " Soil threats", " Indicators", " Scenario-based", " Agroecosystems", "Soil", "[SDE]Environmental Sciences", "Soil threats", "Indicators", "Agroecosystems", "Ecosystem", "Environmental Monitoring
Scammacca, Ottone, Montagne, David, Asins-Velis, Sabina, Bondi, Giulia, Borůvka, Luboš, Buttafuoco, Gabriele, Cadero, Alice, Calzolari, Costanza, Cousin, Isabelle, Czuba, Martina, Foldal, Cecilie, Malli, Armin, Klimkowicz-Pawlas, Agnieszka, Kukk, Liia, Lumini, Erica, Medina-Roldán, Eduardo, Michel, Kerstin, Molina, María José, O'Sullivan, Lilian, Pindral, Sylwia, Putku, Elsa, Kitzler, Barbara, Walter, Christian,
creator
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2025.178646
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Science%20of%20The%20Total%20Environment
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2025.178646
Do we speak one language on the way to sustainable soil management in Europe? A terminology check via an EU‐wide survey
Abstract
European soils are under increasing pressure, making it difficult to maintain the provision of soil ecosystem services (SESs). A better understanding of soil processes is needed to counteract soil threats (STs) and to promote sustainable soil management. The EJP SOIL programme of the EU provides a framework for the necessary research. However, different definitions of soil￢ﾀﾐrelated terms potentially lead to varied understandings of concepts. Furthermore, there are numerous indicators available to quantify STs or SESs. As unclear communication is a key barrier that hinders the implementation of research results into practice, this study aimed to answer the question about whether the terminology of large￢ﾀﾐscale initiatives is adequately understood within the soil￢ﾀﾐscience community and non￢ﾀﾐresearch stakeholders. An online questionnaire was used to provide definitions for 33 soil￢ﾀﾐrelated terms in both scientific and plain language, as well as indicators for seven SESs and 11 STs. Participants were asked to rate their agreement with the definitions and indicators on a seven￢ﾀﾐgrade Likert scale. The level of agreement was calculated as the percentage of ratings above 4, the neutral position. The survey was available from June to September 2023 and was distributed by a snowball approach. More than 260 stakeholders assessed the survey; 70% of respondents were researchers, and 15% were practitioners. Mean agreement levels for the definitions and indicators were generally high, at 85% and 78% respectively. However, it was apparent that the lowest agreement was found for terms that are relatively new, such as Ecosystem Services and Bundle, or unfamiliar for certain subgroups, such as ecological terms for stakeholders working at the farm scale. Due to their distinct majority, the results of this study primarily reflect the opinions of scientists. Thus, broad conclusions can only be drawn by comparing scientists with non￢ﾀﾐscientists. In this regard, the agreement was surprisingly high across all types of questions. The combined outcomes indicate that there is still a need to facilitate communication between stakeholders and to improve knowledge distribution strategies. Nevertheless, this study can support and be used by future projects and programmes, especially regarding the harmonization of terminology and methods.</p
Soilbased ecosystem services", "Soil policy stakeholders", "soil science terminology", "soil indicators", "610", "Sustainable soil management", "sustainable soil management", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "333", "12. The European Joint Programme for SOIL (EJP SOIL) has identified twelve main soil challenges in Europe. To assess the potential and eventually increase the adoption of soil￢ﾀﾐimproving management practices, it is necessary to know (i) the current levels of adoption of the practices, (ii) socio￢ﾀﾐtechnical barriers influencing their adoption, and (iii) their bio￢ﾀﾐphysical limits. This study compiled an inventory of soil￢ﾀﾐimproving management practices relevant to European conditions, and used a survey among soil scientists to assess the levels of adoption of these practices in Europe. In total, 53 soil management practices were identified that address one or several of the soil challenges. The adoption of most practices was low or spatially heterogeneous across Europe, highlighting region￢ﾀﾐspecific limitations to sustainable soil management. Qualitative interviews were conducted to explore the importance of socio￢ﾀﾐtechnical aspects of adoption. Using conservation agriculture as an example, factors that can hinder adoption included the availability of knowledge and adequate machinery, financial risks, and farming traditions. Through a modelling approach, 54% of arable land in Europe was found to be suitable for cover cropping, indicating that the adoption of soil management practices is frequently limited by climatic constraints. We propose a region￢ﾀﾐspecific approach that recognizes the importance of identifying and overcoming socio￢ﾀﾐtechnical barriers, and by acknowledging bio￢ﾀﾐphysical limits that may be expanded by innovation.</p
Conservation agriculture", "Sustainable soil management", "sustainable soil management", "[SDV.SA.SDS]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Soil study", "Soil degradation", "630", "333", "12. However, a minority of Member States (United Kingdom, Germany, France, Austria, and The Netherlands) could not agree on the text of the proposed Directive. Consequently, the EC decided to withdraw the proposal in 2014. In the more than 10 years that have passed since the initial proposal, a great number of new evidences on soil degradation and its negative consequences, have proved the necessity of a common European soil protection Directive. This study is aimed at specifying the possible obstacles, differences, and gaps in legislature and administration in the countries that formed the blocking minority, which resulted in the refusal of the Directive. The individual legislations of the opposing countries on the matter, were summarized and compared with the goals set by the Directive, in three highlighted aspects: (1) soil-dependent threats, (2) contamination, and (3) sealing. We designed a simple schematic evaluation system to show the basic levels of differences and similarities. We found that the legislative regulations concerning soil-dependent degradation and contamination issues in the above countries were generally well defined, complementary, and thorough. A common European legislation can be based on harmonised approaches between them, focusing on technical implementations. In the aspect of sealing we found recommendations, principles, and good practices rather than binding regulations in the scrutinised countries. Soil sealing is an issue where the proposed Directive’s measures, could have exceeded those of the Member States.

0211 other engineering and technologies", "02 engineering and technology", "soil functions", "15. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales. Based on an intensive literature review and results from previous experiences in member states a scenario framework was developed (climate, land use, and management changes) and common methodologies (statistical methods, simple and/or more sophisticated models) were identified, used or validated to forecast how selected soil ecosystem services (SES) and soil threats (ST) will change according to climate, land-use and management changes. In contrast to WP5 we focus in WP3/Task 3 on forecasts of changes of various soil indicators on site, regional or national scale, and could rely on soil maps with high resolution that are maintained by several member states. Three countries out of 6 were able to give predictions for changes on the SES “GHG and climate regulation”. This report is part of the EJP SOIL SERENA project. It presents the way some stakeholders have been involved in the project to validate mapping products of soil-based ecosystem services and soil threats, which have been produced by some harmonised cookbooks. The cookbooks are first presented and their concern: as far as soil threats are concerned, and as far as soil-based ecosystem services are concerned. A cookbook for an evaluation of bundles is also presented. The list of countries which have evaluated the different products is then precised. The results of the evaluation by stakeholders are commented all together, without any relation to a specific country. They demonstrate that the results are more likely understood by scientists than by policy makers or farmers. For the latter, the scale of the maps are not relevant with their own interest. The maps of erosion, SOC loss and soil sealing seem to be more easily understood by the stakeholder that the GHG regulation, and the bundles, with which stakeholders are not familiar.
However, it was apparent that the lowest agreement was found for terms that are relatively new, such as Ecosystem Services and Bundle , or unfamiliar for certain subgroups, such as ecological terms for stakeholders working at the farm scale. Nevertheless, this study can support and be used by future projects and programmes, especially regarding the harmonization of terminology and methods. </p
