Soil characterisation was carried out at each field site to determine the soil factors that may influence wheat grain Se concentrations in unfertilised plots. Soil samples were taken after harvest from each treatment to determine the fate and speciation of selenate fertiliser applied to soil. Wheat grain Se concentrations could be predicted from soil Se concentration and soil extractable sulphur (S) using the following regression model: Grain Se = a + b(total soil Se) + c(extractable soil Se) - d(extractable soil S), with 86 % of the variance being accounted for, suggesting that these properties control Se concentrations in grain from unfertilised plots. Extractable soil Se concentrations were low (2.4 – 12.4 µg kg−1) and predominantly consisted of selenite (up to 70 % of extractable Se) and soluble organic forms, whereas selenate was below the detection limit. Se fertilisation up to 20 g ha−1 did not lead to a significant Se accumulation in the soil, suggesting losses of Se unutilised by the crop.
2. A possible limitation is that UK wheat is routinely fertilised with sulphur (S), which may affect uptake of Se by the crop. The response of wheat to Se and S fertilisation and residual effects of Se were determined in field trials over 2 consecutive years. Selenium fertilisation at 20 g ha−1 as sodium selenate increased grain Se by four to seven fold, up to 374 µg Se kg−1. Sulphur fertilisation produced contrasting effects in 2 years; in year 1 when the crop was not deficient in S, grain Se concentration was significantly enhanced by S, whereas in year 2 when crop yield responded significantly to S fertilisation, grain Se concentration was decreased significantly in the S-fertilised plots. An incubation experiment showed that addition of sulphate enhanced the recovery of selenate added to soils, probably through a suppression of selenate transformation to other unavailable forms in soils. Our results demonstrate complex interactions between S and Se involving both soil and plant physiological processes; S can enhance Se availability in soil but inhibit selenate uptake by plants. Furthermore, no residual effect of Se fertiliser applied in year 1 was found on the following crop.
0106 biological sciences", "2. The poly-metallic mine Dabaoshan in South China is an excellent test site to understand the processes affecting the surrounding polluted agricultural fields. Our objectives were firstly to investigate metal ion activity in soil solution, distribution in solid constituents, and spatial distribution in samples, secondly to determine dominant environment factors controlling metal activity in the long-term AMD-polluted subtropical soils. Soil Column Donnan Membrane Technology (SC-DMT) combined with sequential extraction shows that unusually large proportion of the metal ions are present as free ion in the soil solutions. The narrow range of low pH values prevents any pH effects during the binding onto oxides or organic matter. In the Cd-hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum and non-accumulator Solanum melongena, the role of these organic ligands in the accumulation and detoxification mechanisms of Cd are debated. In this study, we used X-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate Cd speciation in these plants (roots, stem, leaves) and in the soils used for their culture to unravel the plants responses to Cd exposure. The results show that Cd in the 100 mg kg-1 Cd-doped clayey loam soil is sorbed onto iron oxyhydroxides. In both S. nigrum and S. melongena, Cd in roots and fresh leaves is mainly bound to thiol ligands, with a small contribution of inorganic S ligands in S. nigrum leaves. We interpret the Cd binding to sulfur ligands as detoxification mechanisms, possibly involving the sequestration of Cd complexed with glutathione or phytochelatins in the plant vacuoles. In the stems, results show an increase binding of Cd to -O ligands (>50% for S. nigrum). However, little information is available concerning the effect of digestate atmospheric exposure on trace elements speciation and, consequently, on their mobility and bio-accessibility when digestate is stored in open tanks or handled before land spreading. In this study, we investigated at laboratory-scale the effect of digestate aeration on the distribution of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se and W using the diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT)-based fractionation. For this purpose, experiments were performed to assess the variation in distribution between the labile, soluble and particulate fractions over time in digested sewage sludge during passive and forced aeration. Results showed that aeration promoted a dissolution of Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Pb, suggesting a possible increase in their mobility that may likely occur during storage in open tanks or handling before land spreading. Labile elements' fraction increased only during forced aeration (except for Fe and Mn), suggesting that their short-term bio-accessibility can increase only after significant aeration as the one assumed to occur when land spreading takes place.
550", "[SPI.GPROC] Engineering Sciences [physics]/Chemical and Process Engineering", "Speciation", "[SDU.STU]Sciences of the Universe [physics]/Earth Sciences", "Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT)", "Chemical Fractionation", "01 natural sciences", "630", "Soil", "Digested sewage sludge", "[SPI.GPROC]Engineering Sciences [physics]/Chemical and Process Engineering", "Fractionation", "Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT); Digested sewage sludge; Fractionation; Metalloids; Metals; Speciation; Chemical Fractionation; Environmental Monitoring; Sewage; Soil; Trace Elements", "Metalloids", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "2. Twelve elements were monitored by Chelex (Al, Cd, Co, Cr (III), Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb) and zirconia-DGT (As, Mo, Se) samplers exposed from 4 h to 9 days. Twenty-four hours' deployment time was suitable for most of the studied elements. However, short deployment led to insufficient element accumulation or non-establishment of steady state while long deployment (from 18 to 144 h depending on the element) led to saturation of the binding gels and/or competing effects with other major elements. In addition, this study showed that the matrix of the digested sewage sludge lowers the accumulation of some trace elements in the DGT samplers, leading to labile concentrations underestimation of roughly 10-30% (depending on the element). Moreover, compared to the conventional total dissolved elements measurement, DGT technique allowed to quantify 7 out of 12 labile elements whereas only 3 out of 12 dissolved elements were quantified. These results highlight the potential of DGT technique to assess labile trace elements in digestate samples, provided a careful adaptation of the deployment time as well as an evaluation of the matrix effect is performed.
550", "[SDE.IE]Environmental Sciences/Environmental Engineering", "Matrix interferences", "Speciation", "Metalloids Speciation", "Chemistry (all)", "Biochemistry", "01 natural sciences", "6. Endogean taxa are strongly affected by the unique qualities of the below￢ﾀﾐground environment and its effect on dispersal, and contrasting reports indicate either high dispersal capabilities favoured by small body size and mediated by passive mechanisms, or low dispersal due to restricted movement and confinement inside the soil. We studied a species￢ﾀﾐrich endogean ground beetle lineage, Typhlocharina, including three genera and more than 60 species, as a model for the evolutionary biology of dispersal and speciation in the deep soil. A time￢ﾀﾐcalibrated molecular phylogeny generated from >400 individuals was used to delimit candidate species, to study the accumulation of lineages through space and time by species￢ﾀﾓarea￢ﾀﾓage relationships and to determine the geographical structure of the diversification using the relationship between phylogenetic and geographic distances across the phylogeny. Our results indicated a small spatial scale of speciation in Typhlocharina and low dispersal capacity combined with sporadic long distance, presumably passive dispersal events that fuelled the speciation process. Analysis of lineage growth within Typhlocharina revealed a richness plateau correlated with the range of distribution of lineages, suggesting a long￢ﾀﾐterm species richness equilibrium mediated by density dependence through limits of habitat availability. Our trend analysis indicates a reduction of NMVOC emissions and OFP of -5 % and -10 % between 2010 and 2019, respectively. The larger decrease in OFP is driven by a bigger reduction in xylenes (-29 %) and toluene (-28 %) from paint application industries and the road transport sector. By 2030 a significant increase (+37 %) in the OFP from the public electricity sector is expected due to the planned increase in biomass use for power generation. In the stems, results show an increase binding of Cd to -O ligands (>50% for S. nigrum). In the stems, results show an increase binding of Cd to -O ligands (>50% for S. nigrum). We suggest that Cd is partly complexed by organic acids for transportation in the sap.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "0106 biological sciences", "570", "[CHIM.ANAL] Chemical Sciences/Analytical chemistry", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_28566", "cadmium", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_2219", "Speciation", "Plant Roots", "01 natural sciences", "[SDV.BV.BOT] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Vegetal Biology/Botanics", "détoxification", "[SDU.STU.GC] Sciences of the Universe [physics]/Earth Sciences/Geochemistry", "[SDE.ES] Environmental Sciences/Environment and Society", "Soil Pollutants", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_32389", "Solanum melongena", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_5383", "Solanaceae", "Solanum nigrum", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "580", "Toxicity", "thiol", "X-Ray absorption spectroscopy", "[SDV.BV.BOT]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Vegetal Biology/Botanics", "3. Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2, isolated from a bentonite sample, was used to investigate its potential to reduce U(VI) in different background electrolytes: bicarbonate buffer, where a uranyl(VI)‑carbonate complex predominates, and synthetic Opalinus Clay pore water, where a uranyl(VI)-lactate complex occurs, as confirmed by time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. While Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2 rapidly removed almost all U from the supernatants in bicarbonate buffer, only a low amount of U was removed in Opalinus Clay pore water. UV/Vis measurements suggest a speciation-dependent reduction by the microorganism. Scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed the formation of two different U-containing nanoparticles inside the cells. In a subsequent step, artificial multispecies bio-aggregates were formed using derivatized polyelectrolytes with cells of Desulfitobacterium sp. G1-2 and Cobetia marina DSM 50416 to assess their potential for U(VI) reduction under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. These findings provide new perspectives on microbial U(VI) reduction and contribute to the development of a safety concept for high-level radioactive waste repositories, as well as to new bioremediation strategies.
Biodegradation", " Environmental", "Iron", "Radioactive Waste", "Microbial uranium(VI) reduction", "Speciation-dependent reduction", "Uranium", "Artificial biofilms", "Desulfitobacterium", "Oxidation-Reduction", "Iron-reducing bacteria
https://doi.org/39471942
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Science%20of%20The%20Total%20Environment
