Part 2: Generating Mechanisms and Implications", "description": "Abstract<p>In the stable boundary layer, thermal submesofronts (TSFs) are detected during the Shallow Cold Pool experiment in the Colorado plains, Colorado, USA in 2012. The topography induces TSFs by forming two different air layers converging on the valley-side wall while being stacked vertically above the valley bottom. The warm-air layer is mechanically generated by lee turbulence that consistently elevates near-surface temperatures, while the cold-air layer is thermodynamically driven by radiative cooling and the corresponding cold-air drainage decreases near-surface temperatures. The semi-stationary TSFs can only be detected, tracked, and investigated in detail when using fibre-optic distributed sensing (FODS), as point observations miss TSFs most of the time. Neither the occurrence of TSFs nor the characteristics of each air layer are connected to a specific wind or thermal regime. However, each air layer is characterized by a specific relationship between the wind speed and the friction velocity. Accordingly, a single threshold separating different flow regimes within the boundary layer is an oversimplification, especially during the occurrence of TSFs. No local forcings or their combination could predict the occurrence of TSFs except that they are less likely to occur during stronger near-surface or synoptic-scale flow. While classical conceptualizations and techniques of the boundary layer fail in describing the formation of TSFs, the use of spatially continuous data obtained from FODS provide new insights. Future studies need to incorporate spatially continuous data in the horizontal and vertical planes, in addition to classic sensor networks of sonic anemometry and thermohygrometers to fully characterize and describe boundary-layer phenomena. </p>", "keywords": ["Topography", "550", "13. The submesoscale motion consisted of two air layers creating a well-defined front with a sharp temperature gradient, and further-on referred to as a thermal submesofront (TSF). The semi-stationary TSFs and their advective velocities are detected and determined by the fibre-optic distributed-sensing\uffc2\uffa0(FODS) technique. An objective detection algorithm utilizing FODS measurements is able to detect the TSF boundary, which enables a detailed investigation of its spatio\uffe2\uff80\uff93temporal statistics. The novel approach in data processing is to conditionally average any parameter depending on the distance between a TSF boundary and the measurement location. By doing this, a spatially-distributed feature like TSFs can be characterized by point observations and processes at the TSF boundary can be investigated. At the TSF boundary, the air layers converge, creating an updraft, strong static stability, and vigorous mixing. Further, the TSF advective velocity of TSFs is an order of magnitude lower than the mean wind speed. Despite being gentle, the topography plays an important role in TSF formation. Although SCZS greatly affect terrestrial biogeochemical and hydrological cycles, underpinning mechanisms are poorly documented. Herein, we characterized the SCZS of a typical red soil in subtropical China, a type of soil with vast global distribution. The thickness information of three layers was derived from hand augers, boreholes and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) radargrams and incorporated into geographically weighted regression (GWR) models for the reconstruction of paleotopography (Cretaceous sandstone). The interpreted GPR results in terms of thicknesses and interfaces for the three layers were consistent with the borehole logs. The trained GWR models accounted for 43%\u201377% of the spatial variations in the three layers. The paleotopographic elevations were highly correlated with those of the current land surface (r\u00a0=\u00a00.85). Spatial analysis showed that the rougher paleotopography was inherited by the current landform. The SCZS evolution involving mainly the mantling covered by Quaternary red clay (QRC) was primarily driven by terrain attributes. These findings may enhance our understanding of the interaction between the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment. For that, crop yield estimation provides valuable information. The main research focus was to predict within-field grain yield and detect its drivers. The Random Forest regression model on data from diverse sources at the 10-meter spatial resolution was developed. The study was conducted in the Vojvodina region (Serbia) for eight wheat-planted fields, having precise grain yield data. Open-source data including 15 vegetation indices (VIs) was calculated from Sentinel-2 satellite bands, physical-geographical features obtained from the digital elevation model and soil properties. The model succeeded in predicting the wheat grain yield with the RMSE of 0.66 t/ha (average yield of 0.09 t/ha) and the best predictors were VIs considering chlorophyll and moisture content in plants, while physical-geographical properties managed to explain within-field variability. During the last decade, several global DEMs have been released based on satellite data. ASTER and SRTM are the most widely used DEMs, but the more recently released, AW3D30, TanDEM-X and MERIT, are being increasingly used. Many researchers have studied the quality of these DEM products in recent years. However, there has been no comprehensive and systematic evaluation of their quality over areas with variable topography and land cover conditions. To provide this comparison, we examined the accuracy of six freely available global DEMs (ASTER, AW3D30, MERIT, TanDEM-X, SRTM, and NASADEM) in four geographic regions with different topographic and land use conditions. We used local high-precision elevation models (Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Pleiades-1A) as reference models and all global models were resampled to reference model resolution (1m). In total, 608 million 1x1 m pixels were analyzed. To estimate the accuracy, we generated error rasters by subtracting each reference model from the corresponding global DEM and calculated descriptive statistics for this difference (e.g., median, mean, root-mean-square error (RMSE)). We also assessed the vertical accuracy as a function of the slope, slope aspect, and land cover. We found that slope had the strongest effect on DEM accuracy, with no relationship for slope aspect. The AW3D30 was the most robust and had the most stable performance in most of the tests and is therefore the best choice for an analysis of multiple geographic regions. SRTM and NASADEM also performed well where available, whereas NASADEM, as a successor of SRTM, showed only slight improvement in comparison to SRTM. We calculated species\uffe2\uff80\uff93area relationships to analyse our data.</p>Results<p>We found that large\uffe2\uff80\uff90scale topographic heterogeneity (based on the whole plot of 2200\uffc2\uffa0m2) positively affects plant species richness at all scales (even at the smallest 0.1\uffe2\uff80\uff90m2 scale), and that grazing has a positive additive effect at the small scales (0.1 and 10\uffc2\uffa0m2). While grazing also had a positive effect on species richness at larger scales (1000\uffc2\uffa0m2), the strength of the effect was dependent on the topographic heterogeneity at that scale. The effectiveness of grazing for increased plant species richness was highest at low topographic heterogeneity, and lowest at intermediate topographic heterogeneity. Effects of intermediate heterogeneity were probably counterbalanced by the effects of grazing.</p>Conclusions<p>Our results suggest that the variation in elevation is an important predictor of whether low\uffe2\uff80\uff90intensity grazing has positive effects on plant species richness or not. Grazing appears most beneficial at low topographic heterogeneity, but whether these findings hold for other grazed ecosystems will depend on several factors, most importantly, the relationship between topographic and abiotic heterogeneity. Results of our study are highly relevant for the application of low\uffe2\uff80\uff90intensity grazing as tool for conservation management in salt marshes and other natural areas.</p>", "keywords": ["0106 biological sciences", "2. As aspect strongly influences the local microclimate, we here assess whether shifts from warm south\uffe2\uff80\uff90exposed aspects to cool north\uffe2\uff80\uff90exposed aspects in response to climate change can compensate for an upward shift into cooler elevations.</p>Location<p>Switzerland, Swiss Alps.</p>Methods<p>We built ensemble distribution models using high\uffe2\uff80\uff90resolution climate data for two mountain\uffe2\uff80\uff90dwelling viviparous ectotherms, the Alpine salamander and the Common lizard, and projected them into various future scenarios to gain insights into distributional changes. We further compared elevation and aspect (northness) of current and predicted future locations to analyse preferences and future shifts.</p>Results<p>Future ranges were consistently decreasing for the lizard, but for the salamander they were highly variable, depending on the climate scenario and threshold rule. Aspect preferences were elevation\uffe2\uff80\uff90dependent: warmer, south\uffe2\uff80\uff90exposed microclimates were clearly preferred at higher compared to lower elevations. In terms of presence and future locations, we observed both elevational upward shifts and northward shifts in aspect. Under future conditions, the shift to cooler north\uffe2\uff80\uff90exposed aspects was particularly pronounced at already warmer lower elevations.</p>Main conclusions<p>For our study species, shifts in aspect and elevation are complementary strategies to mitigate climatic warming in the complex mountain topography. This complements the long\uffe2\uff80\uff90standing view of elevational upward shift being their only option to move into areas with suitable future climate. However, the application of repeated irradiation/bleaching cycles did not result in an increase in sensitivity; annealing in the 300\uffe2\uff80\uff93500\uffc2\uffb0C temperature range generated the sensitisation of both the 110\uffc2\uffb0C thermoluminescence (TL) peak as well as the OSL signal, likely by activation of yet unidentified luminescence centres. After heating, the quartz signal is comparable to that of ideal samples, but the annealing is precluding successful dating. On the other hand, feldspar infrared-stimulated signals displayed satisfactory properties, allowing estimation of ages ranging from 14 \uffc2\uffb1 1\uffe2\uff80\uff9329 \uffc2\uffb1 3 ka for the investigated deposit. Herein, we characterized the SCZS of a typical red soil in subtropical China, a type of soil with vast global distribution. The thickness information of three layers was derived from hand augers, boreholes and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) radargrams and incorporated into geographically weighted regression (GWR) models for the reconstruction of paleotopography (Cretaceous sandstone). The interpreted GPR results in terms of thicknesses and interfaces for the three layers were consistent with the borehole logs. The trained GWR models accounted for 43%\u201377% of the spatial variations in the three layers. The paleotopographic elevations were highly correlated with those of the current land surface (r\u00a0=\u00a00.85). Spatial analysis showed that the rougher paleotopography was inherited by the current landform. The SCZS evolution involving mainly the mantling covered by Quaternary red clay (QRC) was primarily driven by terrain attributes. These findings may enhance our understanding of the interaction between the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment. A lot of this time period relates to the Ice Age.   Quaternary sediments are the soft material that has been deposited during this time.  In Ireland much of this is related to the movement of glaciers and ice sheets. The main types of sediments shown on the map are tills (boulder clays), gravels, sands and peat. Over most parts of Ireland, these sediments cover the bedrock (solid rock at or below the land surface).   Geologists map and record information from the shallow sediments which can be seen at or near the surface. This information along with boreholes (a deep narrow round hole drilled in the ground), geophysical data (information on the physical properties of the Earth's surface and subsurface e.g. magnetics, gravity and electromagnetics) and geochemical data (chemical properties) is used to create the map. Areas are drawn on a map to show where sediments are found.   We collect new data to update our map and use data made available from other sources.  This map is to the scale 1:50,000 (1cm on the map relates to a distance of 500m).  It is a vector dataset. Vector data portray the world using points, lines, and polygons (areas).  The sediments data is shown as polygons.
