The biochar was added to soils at 0%, 0.5% and 1.0% (w/w) and the herbicides were applied to those soil-biochar mixes at nil, half, full, two times, and four times, the recommended dosage (H(4)). Annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) was grown in biochar amended soils for 1 month. Biochar had a positive impact on ryegrass survival rate and above-ground biomass at most of the application rates, and particularly at H(4). Within any given biochar treatment, increasing herbicide application decreased the survival rate and fresh weight of above-ground biomass. Biomass production across the biochar treatment gradient significantly differed (p<0.01) and was more pronounced in the case of atrazine than trifluralin. For example, the dose-response analysis showed that in the presence of 1% biochar in soil, the value of GR(50) (i.e. the dose required to reduce weed biomass by 50%) for atrazine increased by 3.5 times, whereas it increased only by a factor of 1.6 in the case of trifluralin. The combination of the chemical properties and the mode of action governed the extent of biochar-induced reduction in bioavailability of herbicides. The greater biomass of ryegrass in the soil containing the highest biochar (despite having the highest herbicide residues) demonstrates decreased bioavailability of the chemicals caused by the wheat straw biochar. This work clearly demonstrates decreased efficacy of herbicides in biochar amended soils. The role played by herbicide chemistry and mode of action will have major implications in choosing the appropriate application rates for biochar amended soils.", "keywords": ["Carbon sequestration", "2. For the first time, TiO2\u00a0and ZnO catalysts were compared when employed in conjunction with micro-discharges generated directly into the interconnected soil channels. In the presence of catalysts, a significant increase in degradation efficiency was observed; after 5\u00a0min, trifluralin degradation increased from 66.5% (plasma alone) to 94.2% and 93% with the addition of TiO2\u00a0and ZnO, respectively. In terms of degradation kinetics, TiO2\u00a0was a slightly superior catalyst compared to ZnO whereas both catalysts performed better under oxygen than in air atmosphere. Compared to plasma alone, the plasma-catalytic treatment considerably increased (\u223c3fold) the process energy efficiency. Moreover, the inhibitory effect of soil moisture was less pronounced during TiO2\u00a0plasma-catalysis where a reduction of\u00a0\u223c19% in pollutant degradation was observed at 5\u00a0wt% soil moisture compared to a\u00a0\u223c54% reduction during plasma alone. The addition of TiO2\u00a0and ZnO resulted in a significant increase in NO2\u00a0concentration and a noticeable reduction in O3 generation associated with an increase of certain plasma species concentration and the generation of additional and more active ROS, respectively. Liquid chromatography (UPLC/MS) data at the early stages of the trifluralin degradation revealed similar intermediates and degradation processes between plasma-alone and plasma-catalysis. The present effort supports the potential of future implementation of a plasma-catalytic soil remediation method being a rapid, highly efficient, low energy demanding and green method.", "keywords": ["13. As avalia\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es foram realizadas por um per\uffc3\uffadodo de 60 dias, em dois sistemas de manejo do solo: semeadura direta na palha (SD) e semeadura convencional (SC), que receberam a aplica\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o dos herbicidas glyphosate e, imazaquin e trifluralin, respectivamente. Ao longo do per\uffc3\uffadodo estudado o imazaquin, na \uffc3\uffa1rea de SD, ocasionou redu\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o da biomassa microbiana e, tamb\uffc3\uffa9m alterou o perfil bacteriano analisado por eletroforese em gel com gradiente desnaturante (DGGE) de forma mais intensa, que o glyphosate. Na \uffc3\uffa1rea de SC n\uffc3\uffa3o houve efeito significativo dos herbicidas sobre a biomassa microbiana, tendo ocorrido grande variabilidade entre repeti\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es de um mesmo tratamento nos perfis de DGGE, o que dificultou a observa\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do efeito dos herbicidas. O seq\uffc3\uffbcenciamento de fragmentos do 16S rDNA retirados dos g\uffc3\uffa9is de DGGE mostrou que o glyphosate restringiu o desenvolvimento de uma bact\uffc3\uffa9ria com 90% de homologia com Herbaspirillum sp., enquanto, o imazaquin estimulou uma bact\uffc3\uffa9ria com 96% de homologia com Ralstonia sp. e, outras bact\uffc3\uffa9rias com pelo menos 92% de homologia com Burkholderia, Thiomonas e Pseudomonas n\uffc3\uffa3o foram afetadas.
