Located around 100 km north of Berlin, ZALF operates the Dedelow research station. The Dedelow Site is enclosed by Focus Area Quillow (https://doi.org/10.4228/zalf.7161-ft27). At this site, household (for instance CarboZALF) and third-party funded research projects are carried out, scientific measuring equipment is operated through ZALF, like the FluxCrane for measuring greenhouse gases, the ZALF weather station and Lysimeter and ajoining projects like Tereno (https://www.tereno.net). A big focus is on living labs like the AgroScapeLab Quillow (https://comm.zalf.de/sites/aslq/SitePages/Home.aspx).
\nDedelow is located in the northeast German glacial landscape and is characterized by a domed ground moraine. This is particularly evident in the small-scale heterogeneous soil properties and changing terrain profiles (knolls, depressions). Climatically, Dedelow is a continentally influenced location with 500 mm annual precipitation and an annual mean temperature of 8.7 \u00b0C, which is characterized by frequent pre-summer drought.
\nThe dominant soil type is para-brown earth. Dedelow is one of the better sites in the Uckermark with a soil index of 35 - 50. The composition of the topsoil (10% clay - 30% silt - 60% sand) corresponds to a sandy loam, the supply of basic nutrients is in the B/C range.
\nThe Dedelow trial station has the personnel and field trial technology to implement different cultivation systems in different plot sizes. There is also close contact with farmers in the region through field days and long-term cooperation.

While urease (UI) and nitrification inhibitors (NI) are known to influence nitrogen (N) transformations, soil N availability, and utilization efficiency in ammonium sulfate urea (AS-HS), their impacts on the carbon (C) and water cycles are less understood. To address this knowledge gap and examine potential cross-effects among nitrogen, carbon, and water, we conducted an on-farm field trial with winter wheat in northeastern Germany, comparing non-fertilized, AS-HS, AS-HS+UI, and AS-HS+UI+NI treatments. Our findings indicate that inhibitors reduced N\u2082O emissions by 34.1-48.8 %. Agronomical nitrogen use efficiency (ANUE) decreased slightly with UI (1.4 %) but increased with UI+NI (4.4 %) relative to AS-HS alone. In addition to this expected effect on the N cycle, the use of UI and NI also influenced the C and water cycle by not only increasing C use efficiency (CUE) but also agronomical water use efficiency (AWUE) compared to AS-HS alone. At the same time, biomass production remained similar (UI) or even increased (UI+NI) when inhibitors were used and especially the double inhibitor treatment UI+NI seemed to effectively reduce overall global warming potential (GWP). In summary, our study underscores the complex interactions among nitrogen, carbon, and water dynamics, highlighting both the environmental impact and potential benefits of using urease (UI) and nitrification inhibitors (NI). While its impact on soil C cycling has been widely recognized, there are few information about its impact on soil N cycling and N fertilizer dynamics. Here, we studied three factors potentially influencing N cycling and N fertilizer dynamics in cropping systems, namely: 1.) soil type, 2.) erosion-induced topsoil dilution and 3.) N fertilizer form in a full-factorial pot experiment using canola plants. We studied three erosion affected soil types (Luvisol, eroded Luvisol, calcaric Regosol) and performed topsoil dilution in all three soils by admixing 20% of the respective subsoil into its topsoil. N fertilizer dynamics was investigated using either mineral (calcium ammonium nitrate) and organic (biogas digestate) fertilizer, labeled with 15N. The fertilizer 15N recovery and the distribution of the fertilizer N in different soil fractions was quantified after plant maturity. Fertilizer N dynamics and utilization were influenced by all three factors investigated. 15N recovery in the plant-soil system was higher and fertilizer N utilization was lower in the treatments with diluted topsoil than in the non-diluted controls. Similarly, plants of the organic fertilizer N treatments took up significantly less fertilizer N in comparison to mineral fertilizer treatments. Both, topsoil dilution and organic fertilizer application promoted 15N recovery and N accumulation in the soil fractions, with strong differences between soil types. Our study reveals a noteworthy insight: topsoil dilution due to soil erosion has a negligible impact on N cycling and dynamics in the plant-soil system. The crucial factors influencing these processes are found to be the choice of fertilizer form and the specific soil type. Recognizing these aspects is essential for a precise and comprehensive assessment of the environmental continuum, emphasizing the novelty of our findings. Through PDT, the lower-concentration, C and N-poor subsoil is tilled upwards towards the surface, the topsoil material is buried in the subsoil and simultaneously mixed, resulting in a C and N dilution of the topsoil. However, whether this might temporarily enhance the C and N accumulation until the former equilibrium of a diluted topsoil is reached is yet unclear. Each soil's topsoil was mixed with 20% material from the respective subsoil and incubated for 26 days in an automated, gas exchange measuring system. Undiluted, unfertilised substrates served as controls, and were compared with those receiving organic fertiliser (Digestate). Digestate addition uniformly increased CO2 emissions across all soil types and notably elevated N2O emissions, particularly in eLL soil. The area is 290 km2, the altitude ranges between 0\u2013100 m above sea level. The landscape is of glacial origin and is characterised by a heterogeneous distribution of the following soil types: luvisols, arenosols,\nphaeozem, retisols, histosols, and planosols. The monitroing was varied out on in total 43 single agricultural fields, 23 out of them belong to the basic monitoring program at AgroScapeLabs Quillow (performed by ZALF) where other parameters have been monitored over time and 20 fields belonging to the Additional program, where only the weed monitoring has been performed. The fields of the Basic program have been selected based on a soil representativeness analysis based on soil map analyses in order to cover the most common and specific soil types within the whole Quillow (river) catchment. The additional program were set up in order to reach a better spatial cover over the whole catchment and to increase the field number. For each field a soil profile description is available from ZALF data repository. Management data are only available from 2000-2006. From later years at least the crop type is available.\nAt each field there were three fixed points installed and identified with GPS data (figure 2). Surveys were repeated every year at exact the same GPS coordinates. Not every field could be monitored every year due to some restrictions by the field owners. From 2019 on winter rape fields were not be monitored anymore due to monitoring overlap with plant protection measures.\nVegetation surveys were carried out on fixed survey quadrats of 25m\u00b2size, marked with boundary ropes. Survey included the estimation of the crop stands structure including data on over all vegetation coverage, crop coverage and height as well as total weed coverage. In a second step weed species inventory was identified by using taxonomic literature (Rothmaler et al. various editions) and coverage of each single species was determined using a modified rating scale according to BRAUN-Blanquet (1964) and already specified to concrete percentage values out in the field. Plants that could not be clearly identified were sampled and re-identified in the laboratory. By adding the data into a databank, species names have to be corrected to the nomenclature of Wisskirchen and H\u00e4upler 1998. We collected biological data (benthic invertebrate taxa abundances) and chemical data (pesticide residues and nutrient concentrations) as well as data on environmental parameters (e.g., conductivity, pH and habitat type) for 154 samples within the time period of 2015-2021. Benthic invertebrates were sampled with a hand net (mesh size 500 \u03bcm) using a habitat-specific, area standardized method. Sampled habitats were: fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), submersed macrophytes, reed, flooded terrestrial vegetation, overhanging terrestrial vegetation, stones, and dead wood. Mixed water samples (5 L) for chemical analysis of nutrients and pesticides were taken by grab sampling from four to six points around the shoreline. The area is 290 km2, the altitude ranges between 0\u2013100 m above sea level. The landscape is of glacial origin and is characterised by a heterogeneous distribution of the following soil types: luvisols, arenosols,\nphaeozem, retisols, histosols, and planosols. The monitoring was varied out on in total 43 single agricultural fields, 23 out of them belong to the basic monitoring program at AgroScapeLabs Quillow (performed by ZALF) where other parameters have been monitored over time and 20 fields belonging to the Additional program, where only the weed monitoring has been performed. The fields of the Basic program have been selected based on a soil representativeness analysis based on soil map analyses in order to cover the most common and specific soil types within the whole Quillow (river) catchment. The additional program were set up in order to reach a better spatial cover over the whole catchment and to increase the field number. For each field a soil profile description is available from ZALF data repository. Management data are only available from 2000-2006. From later years at least the crop type is available.\nAt each field there was a subunit of 0,5-1 ha selected around the fix plots as analyzed within the Twindataset (BK-VA-AgroScapelabsQuillow) (figure 2). Surveys were repeated every year at nearly the same places. Not every field could be monitored every year due to some restrictions by the field owners. From 2019 on winter rape fields were not be monitored anymore due to monitoring overlap with plant protection measures.\nVegetation surveys were carried out on a subunit of 0,5 -1 ha size, including the plots for the exact estimation from the Twindataset. The field subunits of between 0.5-1 ha were mapped and assessments of each species\u00b4 frequency of occurrence were done. The classification of frequency was based on the following scale, including their intermediate values: mf \u2013 most frequent (occurring on at least 50 % of the field), f \u2013 frequent (occurring on at least 25 % of the field), sc \u2013 scattered/diffuse (occurring on at least 10 % of the field), r \u2013 rare/infrequent (only for a few species), mr \u2013 most rare (not more than 1-3 individuals on the field). Plants that could not be clearly identified were sampled and re-identified in the laboratory.
