The purpose of this research was to determine if the effects of leaf removal on soil fertility parameters and maize yield in a Leucaena leucocephala alley cropping system could be reversed. Three leaf management strategies in a Leucaena alley cropping trial that had been in effect from 1987 to 1991 were investigated: 1) leaves returned, 2) leaves removed, and 3) leaves removed, with 100 kg inorganic N ha\u22121 added. In the 1990/91 season, a 34 confounded factorial design was utilized to investigate the effects of leaf management strategy, N rate (0, 30 and 60 kg N ha\u22121); maize plant population (14,800, 29,600, and 44,400 plants ha\u22121); and P rate (0, 18, and 35 kg P ha\u22121). In the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons, leaves were applied equally to all plots, and no P was applied. The N rate and plant population treatments were continued, and the same confounded factorial design was implemented to investigate residual leaf management strategy, residual P rate, n rate, and plant population. The yield gap between the plots where leaves had been returned vs. removed narrowed each season due to uniform leaf application. Application of N improved yields during both seasons. Residual effects of the initial P application decreased to only 10% of the total yield in 1992/93. Plant population affected yields only during the season of very good rainfall. Leaf additions resulted in a relative increase in soil pH, total N,and exchangeable Ca, Mg, and K and a decrease C/N ratio in plots that had not previously received leaves. Leaves supplied more K and Zn to the upper 15 cm of soil than were being extracted by the maize crop, but uniform leaf additions eliminated differences in K and Zn uptake. Plant Zn uptake decreased with increasing P rate and plant population, and increased with increasing N rate and a history of leaf return. The results show that applying leaves equilibrated yields within two seasons, and resulted in a relative improvement of several soil properties. Ng23) Into Cropland Reduces Soil Mineral N Content In Autumn In Southern France", "description": "The introduction of trees in cropland may be a way to improve the mineral nitrogen (N) use efficiency since tree roots can intercept N leached below the crop rooting zone and recycle it as organic N. The aim of this study was to determine soil mineral N (SMN) and total N (STN) contents after 14 years of hybrid walnut tree growth in an agroforestry system. Soil cores were collected and analyses in mid-autumn 2009, in intercropped agroforestry (AF), pure tree (FC) and sole crop control (CC) plots. The SMN was significantly reduced in AF compared to CC (64, 58 and 51 % of reduction at 0.2, 1 and 2 m depth respectively). In the top 1 m of soil, the stock of SMN was 77.7 kg N ha\u22121 in CC versus 32.8 kg N ha\u22121 in AF. Trees in AF developed deeper fine roots than in FC, likely involved in the reduction of SMN when compared to CC. Despite this quantitative reduction, trees also progressively modified the form of mineral N in soil by decreasing the percentage of nitrate (NO3 \u2212) in SMN, particularly in FC compared to CC, while AF was intermediate. The STN was not significantly different between AF and CC; but was higher in FC in the top soil, probably due to weeds and superficial tree root biomasses. A study at a Spanish dehesa has been carried out to estimate the spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon stock and to assess the influence of the tree cover. Methods The soil organic carbon stock was estimated from the five uppermost cm of the mineral soil with high spatial resolution at two plots with different grazing intensities. The Universal Kriging technique was used to assess the spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon stocks, using tree coverage within a buffering area as an auxiliary variable. Results A significant positive correlation between tree presence and soil organic carbon stocks up to distances of around 8 m from the trees was found. The tree crown cover within a buffer up to a distance similar to the crown radius around the point absorbed 30 % of the variance in the model for both grazing intensities, but residual variance showed stronger spatial autocorrelation under regular grazing conditions. Conclusions Tree cover increases soil organic carbon stocks, and can be satisfactorily estimated by means of crown parameters. However, other factors are involved in the spatial pattern of the soil organic carbon distribution. This study was conducted in the highlands of western Kenya, a region with high potential for agroforestry, with the objectives of assessing current biodiversity and aboveground C stocks in perennial vegetation growing on farmland, and estimating C sequestration potential in aboveground C pools. Allometric models were developed to estimate aboveground biomass of trees and hedgerows, and an inventory of perennial vegetation was conducted in 35 farms in Vihiga and Siaya districts. Values of the Shannon index ( H ), used to evaluate biodiversity, ranged from 0.01 in woodlots through 0.4\u20130.6 in food crop plots, to 1.3\u20131.6 in homegardens.  Eucalyptus saligna  was the most frequent tree species found as individual trees (20%), in windrows (47%), and in woodlots (99%) in Vihiga and the most frequent in woodlots (96%) in Siaya. Trees represented the most important C pool in aboveground biomass of perennial plants growing on-farm, contributing to 81 and 55% of total aboveground farm C in Vihiga and Siaya, respectively, followed by hedgerows (13 and 39%, respectively) and permanent crop stands (5 and 6%, respectively). Most of the tree C was located in woodlots in Vihiga (61%) and in individual trees growing in or around food crop plots in Siaya (57%). The homegardens represented the second C pool in importance, with 25 and 33% of C stocks in Vihiga and Siaya, respectively. Considering the mean total aboveground C stocks observed, and taking the average farm sizes of Vihiga (0.6\u00a0ha) and Siaya (1.4\u00a0ha), an average farm would store 6.5\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00.1\u00a0Mg\u00a0C\u00a0farm \u22121  in Vihiga and 12.4\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00.1\u00a0Mg\u00a0C\u00a0farm \u22121  in Siaya. With the current market price for carbon, the implementation of Clean Development Mechanism Afforestation/Reforestation (CDM A/R) projects seems unfeasible, due to the large number of small farms (between 140 and 300) necessary to achieve a critical land area able to compensate the concomitant minimum transaction costs. Higher financial compensation for C sequestration projects that encourage biodiversity would allow clearer win\u2013win scenarios for smallholder farmers. The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of agroforestry practice on C sequestration and CO2-C efflux in a gliricidia-maize intercropping system. The experiment was conducted at an experimental site located at the Makoka Agricultural Research Station, in Malawi. The studies involved two field plots, 7-year (MZ21) and 10-year (MZ12), two production systems (sole-maize and gliricidia-maize simultaneous intercropping systems). A 7-year-old grass fallow (Grass-F) was also included. Gliricidia prunings were incorporated at each time of tree pruning in the gliricidia-maize. The amount of organic C recycled varied from 0.8 to 4.8 Mg C ha \ufffd 1 in gliricidia-maize and from 0.4 to 1.0 Mg C ha \ufffd 1 in sole-maize. In sole-maize, net decreases of soil carbon of 6M g Ch a \ufffd 1 at MZ12 and 7 Mg C ha \ufffd 1 at MZ21 in the topsoil (0\u201020 cm) relative to the initial soil C were observed. Here we combine the results from multidisciplinary research for a unique assessment based on a normalization of 23 ecological, economic and social indicators for four restoration options in the tropical Andes of Ecuador. A comparison of the outcomes among afforestation with native alder or exotic pine, pasture restoration with either low-input or intense management and the abandoned status quo shows that both variants of afforestation and intense pasture use improve the ecological value, but low-input pasture does not. Economic indicators favour either afforestation or intense pasturing. A nivel mundial, cubren aproximadamente mil millones de hect\u00e1reas de tierra y contribuyen a los medios de vida de m\u00e1s de 900 millones de personas. Los sistemas agroforestales tienen la capacidad de secuestrar grandes cantidades de carbono (C) tanto en el suelo como en la biomasa. Sin embargo, estos sistemas a\u00fan no se han considerado completamente en el enfoque de la contabilidad C desarrollado por el Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Clim\u00e1tico, en gran parte debido a la alta diversidad de los sistemas agroforestales y la escasez de datos relevantes. Nuestra revisi\u00f3n de la literatura identific\u00f3 un total de 72 art\u00edculos cient\u00edficos revisados por pares asociados con el almacenamiento de biomasa C (50) y con el carbono org\u00e1nico del suelo (SOC) (122), que contienen un total de 542 observaciones (324 y 218, respectivamente). Con base en una s\u00edntesis de las observaciones informadas, presentamos un conjunto de coeficientes de Nivel 1 para el almacenamiento de biomasa C para cada uno de los ocho sistemas agroforestales principales identificados, incluidos cultivos en callejones, barbechos, setos, multiestratos, parques, cultivos perennes sombreados, silvoarables y sistemas silvopastoriles, desglosados por clima y regi\u00f3n. Utilizando la misma clasificaci\u00f3n agroforestal, presentamos un conjunto de factores de cambio de stock (FLU) y tasas de acumulaci\u00f3n/p\u00e9rdida de COS para tres cambios principales en el uso de la tierra (Luc): de tierras de cultivo a agroforester\u00eda; de bosques a agroforester\u00eda; y de pastizales a agroforester\u00eda. A nivel mundial, los factores medios de cambio de stock SOC (\u00b1 intervalos de confianza) se estimaron en 1,25 \u00b1 0,04, 0,89 \u00b1 0,07 y 1,19 \u00b1 0,10, para los tres LUC principales, respectivamente. The study targeted two main and dominant encroaching bush species in Borana rangeland, Acacia drepanolobium and Acacia mellifera, and their effects on some vegetation attributes and tick population dynamics. A hectare of rangeland encroached by these two acacia species was replicated/divided into three plots, and each plot was subdivided into five sub-plots to receive five treatments: cutting at 0.5 m above ground and pouring kerosene on stumps (T1), cutting at 0.5 m above ground and debarking the stumps down into the soil surface (T2), cutting at 0.5 m above ground alone (T3), cutting at 0.5 m above ground and dissecting the stumps (T4) and control (T5). Data on basal and litter covers, soil erosion and compaction, dead and re-sprouted encroaching tree/shrub species and nymph- and adult-stage tick populations were collected before and after treatment applications. The applied treatments significantly influenced (p < 0.05) basal cover, nymph- and adult-stage tick population and the two encroaching tree species. The results of this study showed that T3 and T2 were good in controlling A. drepanolobium in that order. T4 and T2 had a significant effect in controlling A. mellifera in their order. Controlling bush encroachment had also a positive effect in eradicating the tick population. The most dominant grass and non-grass species observed after the control actions were Cenchrus ciliaris, Chrysopogon aucheri, Abutilon hirtum, Pennisetum mezianum, Dyschoriste hildebrandtii, Zaleya pentandra and Eragrostis papposa. Therefore, controlling encroaching tree/shrub species had created a conducive grazing area with palatable herbaceous species for the livestock and unequivocally reduced tick population which play a role in reducing cattle milk production through closing off teats.
