Floodplain alder and white spruce sites and upland birch/aspen and white spruce sites were examined. Each site had control, fertilized, and sawdust amended plots; flux measurements began during the second treatment year. CO2 emissions decreased with successional age across the sites (alder, birch/aspen, and white spruce, in order of succession) regardless of landscape position. Although CO2 fluxes showed an exponential relationship with soil temperature, the response of CO2 production to moisture fit an asymptotic model. Of the manipulations, only N fertilization had an effect on CO2 flux, decreasing flux in the floodplain sites but increasing it in the birch/aspen site. Landscape position was the best predictor of CH4 flux. The two upland sites consumed CH4 at similar rates (approximately 0.5 mg C m−2 d−1), whereas the floodplain sites had lower consumption rates (0–0.3 mg C m−2 d−1). N fertilization and sawdust both inhibited CH4 consumption in the upland birch/aspen and floodplain spruce sites but not in the upland spruce site. The biological processes driving CO2 fluxes were sensitive to temperature, moisture, and vegetation, whereas CH4 fluxes were sensitive primarily to landscape position and biogeochemical disturbances. Hence, climate change effects on C-gas flux in taiga forest soils will depend on the relationship between soil temperature and moisture and the concomitant changes in soil nutrient pools and cycles.
landscape-ecology", "Betulaceae-: Dicotyledones-", "flux-", "soil-nutrient-pools", "Coniferopsida-: Gymnospermae-", "Vascular-Plants", "forests-", "Environmental-Sciences)", "carbon-dioxide", "nitrogen-fertilizers", "01 natural sciences", "carbon-dioxide: emissions-", "nitrogen-: fertilization-", "vegetation-", "birch- (Betulaceae-)", "124-38-9: CARBON DIOXIDE", "Spermatophytes-", "Spermatophyta-", "74-82-8: METHANE", "Plantae-", "white-spruce (Coniferopsida-)", "successional-age", "boreal-forests", "environmental-temperature", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "taiga-forest-stands", "Angiosperms-", "Gymnosperms-", "Angiospermae-", "Plants-", "sawdust-", "methane-", "15. Here, we provide field data on tree stem atmosphere fluxes of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in 14 spruce trees (Picea abies) and 14 birch trees (Betula pendula) in a Swedish boreal riparian buffer zone. The data was collected at Trollbergets Experimental Area, Vindeln municipality, Sweden, roughly on a monthly basis between May 2021 and May 2023. Stem fluxes were measured at 30 cm above ground in all trees and along height profiles at 80 and 160 cm in four selected trees. For ecosystem context, data on forest floor - atmosphere fluxes of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide from 12 plots are provided. Data on carbon dioxide and methane fluxes are from in situ measurements of flux chambers and data on nitrous oxide fluxes is from manual grab sampling of flux chambers. Ancillary data include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide partial pressures in soils, groundwater level, groundwater temperature, snow depth, tree diameter at breast height, tree height, distance to a nearby stream, and sampling sites coordinates. The data are described in detail in the scientific paper: Klaus, M., Öquist, M. and Machacova, K (in prep.): Tree stem-atmosphere greenhouse gas fluxes in a boreal riparian forest.
anläggningar-för-miljöövervakning", "atmosfäriska-förhållanden", "atmospheric-conditions", "bark", "boreal-forests", "carbon-dioxide", "environmental-impact", "environmental-monitoring-facilities", "forest-trees", "gas-flux", "greenhouse-gases", "habitats-and-biotopes", "hydrografi", "hydrography", "manual-observation", "mark", "methane", "naturtyper-och-biotoper", "nitrous-oxide", "riparian-zones", "se", "seasonal-variation", "soil", "soil-air", "soil-hydrology", "spatial-variations
["creator
http://dataportal.se/organisation/SE2021002817
publisher
http://data.europa.eu/88u/dataset/https-doi-org-10-5878-9jqq-s279
https://doi.org/10.5878/9jqq-s279
https-doi-org-10-5878-9jqq-s279
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/61a82e3b3bef4e105fb6dfb22aa5483b
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items?keywords=boreal-forests&offset=2
